First Reading (Acts 12: 1–11)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
About that time King Herod decided to persecute some members of the Church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword, and when he saw how it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This happened during the festival of the Unleavened Bread. Herod had him seized and thrown into prison with fours squads, each of four soldiers, to guard him. He wanted to bring him to trial before the people after the Passover feast, but while Peter was kept in prison, the whole Church prayed earnestly for him. On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound by a double chain, while guards kept watch at the gate of the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there and a light shone in the prison cell. The angel tapped Peter on the side and woke him stating, "Get up quickly!" At once the chains fell from Peter's wrists. The angel stated, "Put on your belt and your sandals." Peter did so, and the angel added, "Now, put on your cloak and follow me." Peter followed him out; yet he did not realize that what was happening with the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first guard and then the second and they came to the iron door leading out to the city, which opened of itself for them. They went out and made their way down a narrow alley, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter recovered his senses and stated, "Now I know that the Lord has sent his angel and has rescued me from Herod's clutches and from all that the Jews had in store for me."
Second Reading (2 Timothy 4: 6–8 and 17–18)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to Timothy.
As for me the time of sacrifice has arrived, and the moment of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness with which the Lord, the just judge, will reward me on that day; and not only me, but all those who have longed for his glorious coming. But the Lord was at my side, giving me strength to proclaim the Word fully, and let all the pagans hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will save me from all evil, bringing me to his heavenly kingdom. Glory to him forever and ever. Amen!
Gospel (Matthew 16: 13–19)

After that Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi. He asked his disciples, "What do people say of the Son of Man? Who do they say I am?" They replied, "For some of them you are John the Baptist, for others Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets." Jesus asked them, "But you, who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "It is well for you, Simon Barjona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. And now I say to you: You are Peter (or Rock) and on this rock I will build my Church; and never will the powers of death overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what you unbind on earth shall be unbound in heaven."

— I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.
— Glorify the LORD with me, let us together extol his name. I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
— Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. When the poor one called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him.
— The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him.

Por aquel entonces, el rey Herodes hizo arrestar a algunos miembros de la Iglesia para maltratarlos. Mandó ejecutar a Santiago, hermano de Juan, y al ver que esto agradaba a los judíos, también hizo arrestar a Pedro. Eran los días de “los panes Ácimos.” Después de arrestarlo, lo hizo encarcelar, poniéndolo bajo la custodia de cuatro relevos de guardia, de cuatro soldados cada uno. Su intención era hacerlo comparecer ante el pueblo después de la Pascua. Mientras Pedro estaba bajo custodia en la prisión, la Iglesia no cesaba de orar a Dios por él. La noche anterior al día en que Herodes pensaba hacerlo comparecer, Pedro dormía entre los soldados, atado con dos cadenas, y los otros centinelas vigilaban la puerta de la prisión. De pronto, apareció el Angel del Señor y una luz resplandeció en el calabozo. El Angel sacudió a Pedro y lo hizo levantar, diciéndole: “¡Levántate rápido!” Entonces las cadenas se le cayeron de las manos. El Ángel le dijo: “Tienes que ponerte el cinturón y las sandalias” y Pedro lo hizo. Después de dijo: “Cúbrete con el manto y sígueme.” Pedro salió y lo seguía; no se daba cuenta de que era cierto lo que estaba sucediendo por intervención de Ángel, sino que creía tener una visión. Pasaron así el primero y el segundo puesto de guardia, y llegaron a la puerta de hierro que daba a la ciudad. La puerta se abrió sola delante de ellos. Salieron y anduvieron hasta el extremo de una calle, y en seguida Ángel se alejó de él. Pedro, volviendo en sí, dijo: “Ahora sé que realmente el Señor envió a su Angel y me libró de las manos de Herodes y de todo cuanto esperaba el pueblo judío.”
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 34) (Versículos 2–9)
La respuesta es: El ángel del Señor rescatará a los que temen a él.
• Bendeciré al Señor en todo tiempo, su alabanza estará siempre en mis labios. Mi alma se gloría en el Señor; que lo oigan los humildes y se alegren.

Yo ya estoy a punto de ser derramado como una libación, y el momento de mi partida se aproxima: he peleado hasta el fin el buen combate, concluí mi carrera, conservé la fe. Y ya está preparada para mí la corona de justicia, que el Señor, como justo Juez, me dará en ese Día, y no solamente a mí, sino a todos los que hay aguardado con amor su Manifestación. Pero el Señor estuvo a mi lado, dándome fuerzas, para que el mensaje fuera proclamado por mi intermedio y llegara a oídos de todos los paganos. Así fui librado de la boca del león. El Señor me librará de todo mal y me preservará hasta que entre en su Reino celestial. ¡A él sea la gloria por los siglos de los siglos! Amén.

Jesús se fue a la región de Cesárea de Filipo. Estando allí, preguntó a sus discípulos: “Según el parecer de la gente, ¿quién es este Hijo del Hombre?” Respondieron: “Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista, otros que eres Elías o Jeremías, o alguno de los profetas.” Jesús les preguntó: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Pedro contestó: “Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios vivo.” Jesús le replicó: “Feliz eres, Simón Barjona, porque esto no te lo ha revelado la carne ni la sangre, sino mi Padre que está en los Cielos. Y ahora yo te digo: Tú eres Pedro (o sea Piedra), y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia; los poderes de la muerte jamás la podrán vencer. Yo te daré las llaves del Reino de los Cielos: lo que ates en la tierra quedará atado en el Cielo, y lo que desates en la tierra quedará desatado en el Cielo.”

DeleteI hear that Sean currently attends a Christian civilization class that requires him to read the Acts of the Apostles. This should be a great help for him to pass the class!

Kira-kira pada waktu itu raja Herodes mulai bertindak dengan keras terhadap beberapa orang dari jemaat. Ia menyuruh membunuh Yakobus, saudara Yohanes, dengan pedang. Ketika ia melihat, bahwa hal itu menyenangkan hati orang Yahudi, ia melanjutkan perbuatannya itu dan menyuruh menahan Petrus. Waktu itu hari raya Roti Tidak Beragi. Setelah Petrus ditangkap, Herodes menyuruh memenjarakannya di bawah penjagaan empat regu, masing-masing terdiri dari empat prajurit. Maksudnya ialah, supaya sehabis Paskah ia menghadapkannya ke depan orang banyak. Demikianlah Petrus ditahan di dalam penjara. Tetapi jemaat dengan tekun mendoakannya kepada Allah. Pada malam sebelum Herodes hendak menghadapkannya kepada orang banyak, Petrus tidur di antara dua orang prajurit, terbelenggu dengan dua rantai. Selain itu prajurit-prajurit pengawal sedang berkawal di muka pintu. Tiba-tiba berdirilah seorang malaikat Tuhan dekat Petrus dan cahaya bersinar dalam ruang itu. Malaikat itu menepuk Petrus untuk membangunkannya, katanya: "Bangunlah segera!" Maka gugurlah rantai itu dari tangan Petrus. Lalu kata malaikat itu kepadanya: "Ikatlah pinggangmu dan kenakanlah sepatumu!" Iapun berbuat demikian. Lalu malaikat itu berkata kepadanya: "Kenakanlah jubahmu dan ikutlah aku!" Lalu ia mengikuti malaikat itu ke luar dan ia tidak tahu, bahwa apa yang dilakukan malaikat itu sungguh-sungguh terjadi, sangkanya ia melihat suatu penglihatan. Setelah mereka melalui tempat kawal pertama dan tempat kawal kedua, sampailah mereka ke pintu gerbang besi yang menuju ke kota. Pintu itu terbuka dengan sendirinya bagi mereka. Sesudah tiba di luar, mereka berjalan sampai ke ujung jalan, dan tiba-tiba malaikat itu meninggalkan dia. Dan setelah sadar akan dirinya, Petrus berkata: "Sekarang tahulah aku benar-benar bahwa Tuhan telah menyuruh malaikat-Nya dan menyelamatkan aku dari tangan Herodes dan dari segala sesuatu yang diharapkan orang Yahudi."

Sekarang telah tersedia bagiku mahkota kebenaran yang akan dikaruniakan kepadaku oleh Tuhan, Hakim yang adil, pada hari-Nya; tetapi bukan hanya kepadaku, melainkan juga kepada semua orang yang merindukan kedatangan-Nya. Tetapi Tuhan telah mendampingi aku dan menguatkan aku, supaya dengan perantaraanku Injil diberitakan dengan sepenuhnya dan semua orang bukan Yahudi mendengarkannya. Dengan demikian aku lepas dari mulut singa. Dan Tuhan akan melepaskan aku dari setiap usaha yang jahat. Dia akan menyelamatkan aku, sehingga aku masuk ke dalam Kerajaan-Nya di sorga.
