2nd Sunday of Lent

New American Bible readings
First reading (Genesis 22: 1–2, 9A, 10–13 and 15–18)
A reading from the book of Genesis.
God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he replied. Then God said: "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you." When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD's messenger called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered. "Do not lay your hand on the boy," said the messenger. "Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son." As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son. Again the LORD's messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing—all this because you obeyed my command."

Second reading (Romans 8: 31b–34)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was raised—who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Gospel (Mark 9: 2–10)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

When Abraham arrived at the place where God directed them, Abraham built the altar and set the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the wood placed on the altar. He then stretched out his hand to seize the knife and slay his son. But the Angel of God called to Abraham from heaven before he had a chance to kill his son. "Abraham! Abraham!" And he stated, "Here I am." "Do not lay your hand on the boy; do not harm him, for now I know that you actually fear God, and you have not held back from me your only son." Abraham looked around and saw behind him a ram caught by its horns in a bush. He offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. And the Angel of God called from heaven a second time, "By myself I have sworn, it is the Lord who speaks, because you have done this and not held back your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the lands of their enemies. All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your descendants because you have obeyed me."

Second reading (Romans 8: 31b–34)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
If God is with us, who shall be against us? If he did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not give us all things with him? Who shall accuse those chosen by God: he takes away their guilt. Who will dare to condemn them? Christ who died, and better still, rose and is seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us?

Gospel (Mark 9: 2–10)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain. There his appearance was changed before their eyes. Even his clothes shone, becoming as white as no bleach of this world could make them. Elijah and Moses appeared to them; the two were talking with Jesus. The Peter spoke and stated to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." For he did not know what to say; they were overcome with awe. But a cloud formed, covering them in a shadow, and from the cloud came this word, "This is my Son, my Beloved; listen to him." And suddenly, as they looked around, they no longer saw anyone except Jesus with them. As they came down the mountain, Jesus ordered them to tell nobody what they had seen, until the Son of Man be risen from the dead. So they kept this to themselves, despite the fact they discussed with one another what 'to rise from the dead' could possibly define.

    The response is: I will walk in the presence of the Lord, in the land of the living. (or Alleluia!)

    I have kept faith even when I said, "I am greatly afflicted. It is painful to the Lord to see the death of his faithful.

    O Lord, I am your servent, truly your servant, your handmaid's son. You have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you a thanksgiving sacrifice; I will call on the name of the Lord.

    I will carry out my vows to the Lord in the presence of his people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

    The response is: I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.
    I believed, even when I said, "I am greatly afflicted." Precious in the eyes of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones.

    O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have loosed my bonds. To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.

    My vows to the LORD I will pay in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

    Una lectura del libro de Génesis.
    Tiempo después, Dios quiso probar a Abraham y lo llamó: “Abraham.” Respondió él: “Aquí estoy.” Y Dios le dijo: “Toma a tu hijo, al único que tienes y al que amas, Isaac, y vete a la región de Moría. Allí me lo ofrecerás en holocausto, en un cerro que yo te indicaré.” Al llegar al lugar que Dios le había indicado, Abraham levantó un altar y puso la leña sobre él. Luego ató a su hijo Isaac y lo colocó sobre la leña. Extendió después su mano y tomó el cuchillo para degollar a su hijo, pero el ángel de Dios lo llamó desde el cielo y le dijo: “Abraham, Abraham.” Contestó él: “Aquí estoy.” “No toques al niño, ni le hagas nada, pues ahora veo que temes a Dios, ya que no me has negado a tu hijo, el único que tienes.” Abraham miró a su alrededor, y vio cerca de él a un carnero que tenía los cuernos enredados en un zarzal. Fue a buscarlo y lo ofreció en sacrificio en lugar de su hijo. Volvió a llamar el ángel de Dios a Abraham desde el cielo, y le dijo: “Juro por mí mismo ‘palabra de Yahvé’ que, ya que has hecho esto y no me has negado a tu hijo, el único que tienes, te colmaré de bendiciones y multiplicaré tanto tus descendientes, que serán tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo o como la arena que hay a orillas del mar.     ¡Si Dios está a nuestro favor, nadie podrá estar contra nosotros! Si Dios no nos negó ni a su propio Hijo, sino que lo entregó a la muerte por todos nosotros, ¿cómo no habrá de darnos también, junto con su Hijo, todas las cosas? ¿Quién podrá acusar a los que Dios ha escogido? ¡Dios es quien los hace justos! ¿Quién podrá condenarlos? Cristo Jesús es el que murió; más aún, el que resucitó, y además está a la derecha de Dios rogando por nosotros.

    Evangelio (Marcos 9: 2–10)

    Seis días después, Jesús tomó a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y los llevo a ellos solos a un monte elevado. Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos. Sus vestiduras se volvieron resplandecientes, tan blancas como nadie en el mundo podría blanquearlas. Y se les aparecieron Elías y Moisés, conversando con Jesús. Pedro dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, ¡qué bien estamos aquí! Hagamos tres carpas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías.” Pedro no sabía qué decir, porque estaban llenos de temor. Entonces una nube los cubrió con su sombra, y salió de ella una voz: “Este es mi Hijo muy querido, escúchenlo.” De pronto miraron a su alrededor y no vieron a nadie, sino a Jesús solo con ellos. Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les prohibió contar lo que habían visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucitara de entre los muertos. Ellos cumplieron esta orden, pero se preguntaban qué significará “resucitar de entre los muertos.”

    Pagkalipas ng ilang panahon, sinubok ng Diyos si Abraham. Tinawag siya ng Diyos, “Abraham!” “Narito po ako,” tugon naman niya. Sinabi sa kanya, “Isama mo ang kaisa-isa at pinakamamahal mong anak na si Isaac, at magpunta kayo sa lupain ng Moria. Umakyat kayo sa bundok na ituturo ko sa iyo, at ihandog mo siya sa akin.” Pagsapit nila sa lugar na itinuro ng Diyos, gumawa ng altar si Abraham. Inayos niya sa ibabaw nito ang panggatong at inihiga si Isaac matapos gapusin.     Pangalawang pagbabasa (Roma 8: 31B–34)
    Ang pagbabasa sa sulat ni San Pablo sa mga taga-Roma.
    Kung ang Diyos ay panig sa atin, sino ang makakalaban sa atin? Kung ang sarili niyang Anak ay hindi niya ipinagkait, sa halip ay ibinigay para sa ating lahat, hindi kaya niya ibibigay nang masagana sa atin ang lahat ng bagay? Sino ang makakapagharap ng paratang laban sa mga hinirang ng Diyos, gayong ang Diyos ang nagpapawalang-sala sa kanila? Sino ang hahatol upang sila'y parusahan? Si Cristo Jesus ba na namatay, ngunit higit sa lahat ay muling binuhay, at ngayon ay nasa kanan ng Diyos upang mamagitan para sa atin?

    Ebanghelyo (Marcos 9: 2–10)
    Ang magandang balita ayon kay San Marcos.
    Pagkaraan ng anim na araw, umakyat si Jesus sa isang mataas na bundok. Wala siyang isinama roon maliban kina Pedro, Santiago at Juan. Habang sila'y naroroon, nakita ng tatlo na nagbago ang anyo ni Jesus. Nagningning sa kaputian ang kanyang kasuotan; walang sinuman sa mundo ang makapagpapaputi nang gayon. At nakita rin nila roon si Elias at si Moises na nakikipag-usap kay Jesus. Sinabi ni Pedro kay Jesus, “Guro, mabuti po na nandito kami. Magtatayo po kami ng tatlong tolda, isa para sa inyo, isa kay Moises at isa kay Elias.” Dahil sa kanilang matinding takot, hindi niya alam kung ano ang sasabihin niya. Nililiman sila ng makapal na ulap at mula rito'y may isang tinig na nagsabi, “Ito ang pinakamamahal kong Anak. Pakinggan ninyo siya!” Biglang tumingin sa paligid ang mga alagad, ngunit wala silang ibang nakita maliban kay Jesus. Nang sila'y bumababa na mula sa bundok, mahigpit silang pinagbilinan ni Jesus na huwag sasabihin kaninuman ang kanilang nakita hangga't hindi pa muling nabubuhay ang Anak ng Tao. Sinunod nila ang tagubiling ito, ngunit sila'y nagtanungan sa isa't isa kung ano ang kahulugan ng sinabi niyang muling pagkabuhay.
