First reading (Zephaniah 2:3 and 3:12–13)
A reading from the book of the prophet Zephaniah.
Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger. But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord— the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue; they shall pasture and lie down with none to disturb them.
Second reading (1 Corinthians 1: 26–31)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.”
Gospel (Matthew 5: 1–12)

When he saw the crowds,he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. I will leave within you a poor and meek people who seek refuge in God. The remnant of Israel will not act unjustly nor will they speak falsely, nor will deceitful words be found in their mouths. They will eat and rest with none to threaten them.

Brothers and sisters, look and see whom God has called. Few among you can be stated to be cultured or wealthy, and few belong to noble families. Yet God has chosen what the world considers foolish, to shame the wise; he has chosen what the world considers weak to shame the strong. God has chosen common and unimportant people, making use of what is nothing to nullify the things that are, so that no mortal may boast before God. But, by God's grace you are in Christ Jesus, who has become our wisdom from God, and who makes us just and holy and free. Scripture states: Let the one who boasts boast of the Lord.

Fortunate are those with a pure heart, for they shall see God. Fortunate are those who work for peace, they shall be called children of God. Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you because you are my followers. Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God. This is how this people persecuted the prophets who lived before you."

Busquen la justicia, busquen la humildad, tal vez así estarán protegidos en el Día de la ira del Señor. Yo dejaré en medio de ti a un pueblo pobre y humilde, que se refugiará en el nombre del Señor. El resto de Israel no cometerá injusticias ni hablará falsamente; y no se encontrarán en su boca palabras engañosas. Ellos pacerán y descansarán sin que nadie los perturbe.

愛する皆さん。自分たちの仲間を見回してご覧なさい。キリストに従うあなたがたの中には、知者や権力者や地位の高い人はほとんどいません。それどころか、神様は、この世では愚かな者、弱い者と思われている人々をあえてお選びになりました。それは、この世で知恵ある者、立派な人とされている人々を辱しめるためです。神様は、この世で見下されている者、取るに足りない者を選び、そういう人々を役立てることによって、力を持っている人を無きに等しい者とされたのです。ですから、どこのだれであっても、神の前で誇ることはできません。というのは、神によってあなたがたはキリスト・イエスのいのちを得たからです。キリストは、神の救いの計画を明らかにしてくださいました。私たちを神に受け入れられる者としてくださったのは、このキリストでした。この方は、私たちを聖なる者とし、また、私たちを買い取るために、ご自身を投げ出されたのです。聖書の、「だれでも誇ろうとする者は、主のなさったことだけを誇れ」ということばどおりになるためです。

ある日、大ぜいの人が集まって来たので、イエスは弟子たちを連れて山に登り、そこに腰をおろして、彼らにお教えになりました。「心の貧しさを知る謙遜な人は幸いです。神の国はそういう人に与えられるからです。悲しみ嘆いている人は幸いです。そういう人は慰められるからです。柔和で高ぶらない人は幸いです。全世界はそういう人のものだからです。神の前に、正しく良い者になりたいと心から願っている人は幸いです。そういう人の願いは完全にかなえられるからです。親切であわれみ深い人は幸いです。そういう人はあわれみを受けるからです。心のきよい人は幸いです。そういう人は親しく神とお会いできるからです。平和をつくり出す人は幸いです。そういう人は神の子どもと呼ばれるからです。神の御心に従ったために迫害されている人は幸いです。神の国はそういう人のものだからです。わたしの弟子だというので、悪口を言われたり、迫害されたり、ありもしないことを言いふらされたりしたら、それはすばらしいことなのです。喜びなさい。躍り上がって喜びなさい。天の国では、大きな報いが待っているからです。昔の預言者たちも、そのようにして迫害されたことを思い出しなさい。

兄弟たち、あなたがたが召されたときのことを、思い起こしてみなさい。人間的に見て知恵のある者が多かったわけではなく、能力のある者や、家柄のよい者が多かったわけでもありません。ところが、神は知恵ある者に恥をかかせるため、世の無学な者を選び、力ある者に恥をかかせるため、世の無力な者を選ばれました。また、神は地位のある者を無力な者とするため、世の無に等しい者、身分の卑しい者や見下げられている者を選ばれたのです。それは、だれ一人、神の前で誇ることがないようにするためです。神によってあなたがたはキリスト・イエスに結ばれ、このキリストは、わたしたちにとって神の知恵となり、義と聖と贖いとなられたのです。「誇る者は主を誇れ」と書いてあるとおりになるためです。
