First reading (Isaiah 43: 16–21)

Thus says the LORD, who opens a way in the sea and a path in the mighty waters, who leads out chariots and horsemen, a powerful army, till they lie prostrate together, never to rise, snuffed out and quenched like a wick. Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? In the desert, I make a way, in the wasteland, rivers. Wild beasts honor me, jackals and ostriches, for I put water in the desert and rivers in the wasteland for my chosen people to drink, the people whom I formed for myself, that they might announce my praise.

Second reading (Philippians 3: 8–14)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians.
Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God, depending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity, but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.

Gospel (John 8: 1–11)

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”

Second reading (Romans 8: 8–11)

Brothers and sisters: Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.

Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. So the sisters sent word to him saying, "Master, the one you love is ill." When Jesus heard this he said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this, he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?" Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." He said this, and then told them, "Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him." So the disciples said to him, "Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved." But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep. So then Jesus said to them clearly, "Lazarus has died. And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him." So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go to die with him." When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. For his sake, I have let everything fall away and I know consider all as garbage, if instead, I may gain Christ. May I be found in him, without merit or holiness of my own for having fulfilled the Law, but with the holiness which comes through faith in Christ, the holiness given by God which depends on faith in Christ Jesus. May I know him and experience the power of his resurrection and share in his sufferings and become like him in his death, and attain through this, God willing, the resurrection from the dead! I do not believe I have already reached the goal, nor do I consider myself perfect, but I press on till I conquer Christ Jesus, as I have already been conquered by him. No, brothers and sisters, I do not claim to have claimed the prize yet. I say only this: forgetting what is behind me, I race forward and run towards the goal, my eyes on the prize to which God has called us from above in Christ Jesus.

Gospel (John 8: 1–11)

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak, Jesus appeared in the Temple again. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them. Then the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They made her stand in front of everyone. "Master," they stated, "this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now the Law of Moses orders that such women should be stoned to death; but you, what do you say?" They stated this to test Jesus, in order to have some charge against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. And as the people continued to ask him, he straightened up and stated to them, "Let anyone among you who has no sin be the first to throw a stone at her." Jesus returned back to writing on the ground. As a result of these words, they went away, one by one, starting with the elders, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Then Jesus stood up and ask her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She replied, "No one." And Jesus stated, "Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and never sin again."

Second reading (Romans 8: 8–11)

Those walking according to the flesh cannot please God. Yet your existence is not in the flesh, but in the spirit, because the Spirit of God is within you. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is within you, He who raised Jesus Christ from among the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies. Gospel (John 11: 1–45)

There was a sick man named Lazarus who was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was the same Mary who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was sick. So the sisters sent this message to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." On hearing this Jesus stated, "This illness will not end in death; rather it is for God's glory and the Son of God will be glorified through it." It is a fact that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus; yet, after he heard of the illness of Lazarus, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Only then did he state to his disciples, "Let us go into Judea again." They replied, "Master, recently the Jews wanted to stone you. Are you going there again?" Jesus stated to them, "Are not twelve working hours needed to complete a day? Those who walk in the daytime shall not stumble, for they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, for there is no light in them." After that Jesus stated to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going to wake him." The disciples replied, "Lord, a sick person who sleeps will recover." But Jesus had referred to Lazarus' death, while they thought that he had meant the repose of sleep. So Jesus stated plainly, "Lazarus is dead and for your sake I am glad I was not there, for now you may believe. But let us go there, where he is." Then Thomas, called the Twin, stated to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go that we may die with him." When Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. As Bethany is near Jerusalem, about two miles away, many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to offer consolation at their brother's death. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him while Mary remained sitting in the house. And she stated to Jesus, "If you had been here, my brother would not have died. Jesus replied, "Have I not told you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" So they removed the stone. Jesus lifted up his eyes and stated, "Father, I thank you for you have heard me. I knew that you hear me always; but my prayer was for the sake of these people, that they may believe that you sent me." When Jesus had stated this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips and his face wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus stated to them, "Untie him and let him go." Many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw what he did.

    2. “… the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from this Sunday may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil (Fifth Sunday of Lent).”

      The custom of veiling the images during the last two weeks of Lent hails from the Middle Ages, and the veils are usually made of lightweight purple cloth without any decoration. As early as in the ninth century Germany the tradition of extending a large cloth before the altar from the beginning of Lent known as the “Hungertuch” or ‘hunger cloth’, hid the altar from the view of the people until the reading of the Passion on Wednesday of Holy Week at the words “the veil of the temple was rent in two.” The veil in the temple of Jerusalem separated the Holy of Holies from the main body of the temple.

      Some scholars say the custom was a remnant of the ancient practice of ritually expelling public penitents from the church at the beginning of Lent. After the custom of public penance fell into disuse and the entire congregation was symbolically incorporated into the order of penitents through the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, it was no longer possible to expel them from the church and so instead the altar, or “Holy of Holies”, was shielded from view until they were reconciled with God at Easter.

      Later on in the Middle Ages the images of crosses and saints were also covered from the start of Lent. The obligatory custom of limiting this veiling to the last two weeks of Lent, appears in the Ceremonial of Bishops in the seventeenth century. The great Benedictine liturgist, Dom Prosper Gueranger of the nineteenth-century, gives a mystical interpretation of the veiling, based on the Gospel of St John chapter 8, which was formerly read on 5th Sunday of Lent.

      “Jesus hid himself from the Jews who wanted to stone him (cf. Jn 8:59), so by the symbol of the veil, he is now hidden from the world in preparation for the mysteries of his passion. Thus if the Master himself is covered, so should be his servants. As such, the statues of the saints are covered too.”

    3. In the book, Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year by Monsignor Peter J. Elliot, he states:

      “The custom of veiling crosses and images in these last two weeks of Lent has much to commend it in terms of religious psychology, because it helps us to concentrate on the great essentials of Christ’s work of Redemption.”

      The covering of Crucifixes and Statues with a veil or ‘hunger cloth’ is a commendable way of helping us prepare for Our Lord’s Passover in the last two weeks of Lent.

      First of all, the veiling alerts the on looker of the special liturgical time that we have entered. When one walks into church, one is struck by noticing that everything familiar is covered, immediately we notice that something is different. These last two weeks of Lent are meant to be a time of immediate preparation and ‘hunger’ for the Sacred Triduum the celebration of our redemption. These veils are a forceful reminder for us to be eager and ‘hunger’ for its fulfilment in our celebration.

      Secondly, the veils help us focus our senses on the celebration of this special time of the Liturgical year. When we experience the liturgical symbolism of these days and listen to the Passion narrative, our minds are directed to focus on the striking words from the Gospel events and unfolding of the liturgical action that will fulfil the insatiable ‘hunger’ of our souls.

      Thirdly, the Church uses veils to produce a heightened sense of anticipation for Paschal Mystery about to be celebrated . This is further actualized when you participate in the liturgy during this special time and see the veils each day. They are hiding some very beautiful images. Herein lies the whole point: the veils are not meant to be there forever, it is unnatural for beauty to be covered. We desire, we ‘hunger’ for this beauty to be unveiled.

      That ‘hunger’ must be for the unveiling of the true beauty of our Redemption and Salvation brought about by the Paschal Mystery. The Passion death and Resurrection of Jesus restores us and indeed all of humanity to beauty of being and living in God’s grace- the deepest longing, desire and ‘hunger’ of our souls.
      “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).

      Más aún, todo me parece una desventaja comparado con el inapreciable conocimiento de Cristo Jesús, mi Señor. Por él he sacrificado todas las cosas, a las que considero como desperdicio, con tal de ganar a Cristo y estar unido a él, no con mi propia justicia, la que procede de la Ley, sino con aquella que nace de la fe en Cristo, la que viene de Dios y se funda en la fe. Así podré conocerlo a él, conocer el poder de su resurrección y participar de sus sufrimientos, hasta hacerme semejante a él en la muerte, a fin de llegar, si es posible, a la resurrección de entre los muertos.       Pembacaan dari surat Paulus kepada jemaat di Filipi.
      Malahan segala sesuatu kuanggap rugi, karena pengenalan akan Kristus Yesus, Tuhanku, lebih mulia dari pada semuanya. Oleh karena Dialah aku telah melepaskan semuanya itu dan menganggapnya sampah, supaya aku memperoleh Kristus, dan berada dalam Dia bukan dengan kebenaranku sendiri karena mentaati hukum Taurat, melainkan dengan kebenaran karena kepercayaan kepada Kristus, yaitu kebenaran yang Allah anugerahkan berdasarkan kepercayaan. Yang kukehendaki ialah mengenal Dia dan kuasa kebangkitan-Nya dan persekutuan dalam penderitaan-Nya, di mana aku menjadi serupa dengan Dia dalam kematian-Nya, supaya aku akhirnya beroleh kebangkitan dari antara orang mati. Bukan seolah-olah aku telah memperoleh hal ini atau telah sempurna, melainkan aku mengejarnya, kalau-kalau aku dapat juga menangkapnya, karena aku pun telah ditangkap oleh Kristus Yesus. Saudara-saudara, aku sendiri tidak menganggap, bahwa aku telah menangkapnya, tetapi ini yang kulakukan: aku melupakan apa yang telah di belakangku dan mengarahkan diri kepada apa yang di hadapanku, dan berlari-lari kepada tujuan untuk memperoleh hadiah, yaitu panggilan sorgawi dari Allah dalam Kristus Yesus.

      Bacaan Injil (Yohanes 8: 1–11)

      Yesus pergi ke bukit Zaitun. Pagi-pagi benar Ia berada lagi di Bait Allah, dan seluruh rakyat datang kepada-Nya. Ia duduk dan mengajar mereka. Maka ahli-ahli Taurat dan orang-orang Farisi membawa kepada-Nya seorang perempuan yang kedapatan berbuat zinah. Mereka menempatkan perempuan itu di tengah-tengah lalu berkata kepada Yesus: "Rabi, perempuan ini tertangkap basah ketika ia sedang berbuat zinah. Musa dalam hukum Taurat memerintahkan kita untuk melempari perempuan-perempuan yang demikian. Apakah pendapat-Mu tentang hal itu?" Mereka mengatakan hal itu untuk mencobai Dia, supaya mereka memperoleh sesuatu untuk menyalahkan-Nya. Tetapi Yesus membungkuk lalu menulis dengan jari-Nya di tanah. Dan ketika mereka terus-menerus bertanya kepada-Nya, Ia pun bangkit berdiri lalu berkata kepada mereka: "Barangsiapa di antara kamu tidak berdosa, hendaklah ia yang pertama melemparkan batu kepada perempuan itu." Lalu Ia membungkuk pula dan menulis di tanah. Tetapi setelah mereka mendengar perkataan itu, pergilah mereka seorang demi seorang, mulai dari yang tertua. Akhirnya tinggallah Yesus seorang diri dengan perempuan itu yang tetap di tempatnya. Lalu Yesus bangkit berdiri dan berkata kepadanya: "Hai perempuan, di manakah mereka? Tidak adakah seorang yang menghukum engkau?" Jawabnya: "Tidak ada, Tuhan." Lalu kata Yesus: "Aku pun tidak menghukum engkau. Pergilah, dan jangan berbuat dosa lagi mulai dari sekarang."

      海の中に道を開き、海の底を進む道を造った主である。わたしはエジプトの強力な軍隊を、戦車や馬とともに海のもくずとした。彼らのいのちは燈心のように吹き消された。しかしこんなことは、これからすることに比べれば物の数ではない。わたしは新しいことをしようとしている。いや、すでに手をつけた。あなたがたの目には見えないか。わたしの民が故国へ戻るために、荒野に道を造り、彼らの飲み水として荒野に川を開く。野の獣、山犬、だちょうも、わたしに感謝する。わたしに選ばれた民は、この荒野の泉でのどをうるおし、元気づく。わたしはイスラエルを自分のために造った。この民は、いつかきっと、人々の前でわたしをたたえるようになる。

      第二読み物(ピリピ人への手紙第3章:第8詩–第14詩)
      この読み物はピリピ人への手紙です。
      主であるキリスト・イエスを知っているという、途方もない特権と比べれば、ほかのものはみな色あせて見えるのです。私は、キリスト以外のものは、がらくた同然と思っています。それは、キリストを自分のものとするためであり、もはや、良い人間になろうとか、律法に従って救われようとか考えるのはやめて、ただキリストを信じることによって救われ、キリストと結ばれるためです。神が私たちを正しい者と認めてくださるのは、信仰――ただキリストだけを信じ頼ること――を持っているかどうかで決まるからです。私は今、ほかのことはいっさい考えず、ただこのことだけを求めています。つまり、真にキリストを知ること、キリストを復活させた力を、この身をもって体験すること、そして、キリストと共に苦しみ、また死ぬとはどういうことかを知ることです。死者の中から復活した、生き生きとした新しいいのちに生きる者となるためには、どんな犠牲もいといません。なにも、自分が完全な人間だと主張するつもりはありません。学ぶべきことも、まだたくさん残っています。ただ、キリストが何のために私を救ってくださったかを知り、自分に与えられている目標に到達する日を目指して、努力しているのです。愛する皆さん。私は、まだその目標に達してはいません。ただこの一事に全力を注いでいます。すなわち、過去に執着せず、前にあるものを望み見、ゴールに到達して神の栄冠を得るために、一生懸命努力しているのです。この栄冠を与えようと、神は私たちを天へと召しておられます。それは、キリスト・イエスが成し遂げてくださった救いによるのです。

      そればかりか、わたしの主キリスト・イエスを知ることのあまりのすばらしさに、今では他の一切を損失とみています。キリストのゆえに、わたしはすべてを失いましたが、それらを塵あくたと見なしています。キリストを得、キリストの内にいる者と認められるためです。わたしには、律法から生じる自分の義ではなく、キリストへの信仰による義、信仰に基づいて神から与えられる義があります。わたしは、キリストとその復活の力とを知り、その苦しみにあずかって、その死の姿にあやかりながら、何とかして死者の中からの復活に達したいのです。わたしは、既にそれを得たというわけではなく、既に完全な者となっているわけでもありません。何とかして捕らえようと努めているのです。自分がキリスト・イエスに捕らえられているからです。兄弟たち、わたし自身は既に捕らえたとは思っていません。なすべきことはただ一つ、後ろのものを忘れ、前のものに全身を向けつつ、神がキリスト・イエスによって上へ召して、お与えになる賞を得るために、目標を目指してひたすら走ることです。

    5. Primera lettura (Isaia 43: 16–21)
      Una lettura dal libro del profeta Isaia.
      Così dice il Signore che offrì una strada nel mare e un sentiero in mezzo ad acque possenti che fece uscire carri e cavalli, esercito ed eroi insieme; essi giacciono morti: mai più si rialzeranno; si spensero come un lucignolo, sono estinti. Non ricordate più le cose passate, non pensate più alle cose antiche! Ecco, faccio una cosa nuova: proprio ora germoglia, non ve ne accorgete? Aprirò anche nel deserto una strada, immetterò fiumi nella steppa. Mi glorificheranno le bestie selvatiche, sciacalli e struzzi, perché avrò fornito acqua al deserto, fiumi alla steppa, per dissetare il mio popolo, il mio eletto. Il popolo che io ho plasmato per me celebrerà le mie lodi.

      Seconda lettura (Filippesi 3: 8–14)
      Una lettura della lettera di San Paolo ai Filippesi.
      Anzi, tutto ormai io reputo una perdita di fronte alla sublimità della conoscenza di Cristo Gesù, mio Signore, per il quale ho lasciato perdere tutte queste cose e le considero come spazzatura, al fine di guadagnare Cristo e di essere trovato in lui, non con una mia giustizia derivante dalla legge, ma con quella che deriva dalla fede in Cristo, cioè con la giustizia che deriva da Dio, basata sulla fede. E questo perché io possa conoscere lui, la potenza della sua risurrezione, la partecipazione alle sue sofferenze, diventandogli conforme nella morte, con la speranza di giungere alla risurrezione dai morti. Non però che io abbia gia conquistato il premio o sia ormai arrivato alla perfezione; solo mi sforzo di correre per conquistarlo, perché anch'io sono stato conquistato da Gesù Cristo. Fratelli, io non ritengo ancora di esservi giunto, questo soltanto so: dimentico del passato e proteso verso il futuro, corro verso la mèta per arrivare al premio che Dio ci chiama a ricevere lassù, in Cristo Gesù.

      Vangelo (Giovanni 8: 1–11)

      Gesù si avviò allora verso il monte degli Ulivi. Ma all'alba si recò di nuovo nel tempio e tutto il popolo andava da lui ed egli, sedutosi, li ammaestrava. Allora gli scribi e i farisei gli conducono una donna sorpresa in adulterio e, postala nel mezzo, gli dicono: “Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio. Ora Mosè, nella Legge, ci ha comandato di lapidare donne come questa. Tu che ne dici?” Questo dicevano per metterlo alla prova e per avere di che accusarlo. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere col dito per terra. E siccome insistevano nell'interrogarlo, alzò il capo e disse loro: “Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei.” E chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva per terra. Ma quelli, udito ciò, se ne andarono uno per uno, cominciando dai più anziani fino agli ultimi. Rimase solo Gesù con la donna là in mezzo. Alzatosi allora Gesù le disse: “Donna, dove sono? Nessuno ti ha condannata?” Ed essa rispose: “Nessuno, Signore.” E Gesù le disse: “Neanch'io ti condanno; và e d'ora in poi non peccare più.”

Mga kapatid, hindi ko ipinapalagay na nakamit ko na ito. Ngunit isang bagay ang ginagawa ko: habang nililimot ko ang nakaraan at sinisikap na marating ang layuning nais kong makamtan, nagpupunyagi ako patungo sa hangganan upang makamtan ang gantimpala ng pagkatawag sa akin ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Cristo Jesus, ang buhay na nasa langit.

Ano naman ang masasabi ninyo?” Itinanong nila ito upang subukin siya, at nang may maiparatang sila laban sa kanya. Ngunit yumuko lamang si Jesus at sumulat sa lupa sa pamamagitan ng daliri. Patuloy sila sa pagtatanong kaya't tumayo si Jesus at nagsalita, “Ang sinuman sa inyo na walang kasalanan ang siyang maunang bumato sa kanya.” At muli siyang yumuko at sumulat sa lupa. Nang marinig nila iyon, sila'y isa-isang umalis, simula sa pinakamatanda. Iniwan nila ang babaing nakatayo sa harap ni Jesus. Tumayo si Jesus at tinanong ang babae, “Nasaan sila? Wala na bang humahatol sa iyo?” “Wala po, Ginoo,” sagot ng babae. Sinabi ni Jesus, “Hindi rin kita hahatulan. Umuwi ka na, at mula ngayon ay huwag ka nang gumawa ng kasalanan.”

      Por eso, profetiza. Les dirás esta palabra del Señor: “Voy a abrir las tumbas de ustedes, oh pueblo mío, haré que se levanten de sus tumbas y los traeré de vuelta a la tierra de Israel. Entonces, cuando haya abierto sus tumbas y los haya hecho levantarse, sabrán que yo soy el Señor. Pondré en ustedes mi Espíritu y vivirán; los estableceré en su tierra y sabrán que yo, el Señor, lo dije y lo hice, palabra del Señor.”

      Salmo responsorial (Salmo 130) (Versículos 1–8)
      La respuesta es: Con el Señor, hay misericordia y abundancia de redención.
      • Desde lo más profundo te invoco, Señor. ¡Señor, oye mi voz! Estén tus oídos atentos al clamor de mi plegaria.

      Segunda lectura (Romanos 8: 8–11)
      Una lectura de la carta de San Pablo a los romanos.
      Por eso, los que viven de acuerdo con la carne no pueden agradar a Dios. Pero ustedes no están animados por la carne sino por el espíritu, dado que el Espíritu de Dios habita en ustedes. El que no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo no puede ser de Cristo. Pero si Cristo vive en ustedes, aunque el cuerpo esté sometido a la muerte a causa del pecado, el espíritu vive a causa de la justicia. Y si el Espíritu de aquel que resucitó a Jesús habita en ustedes, el que resucitó a Cristo Jesús también dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales, por medio del mismo Espíritu que habita en ustedes.

      Había un hombre enfermo, Lázaro de Betania, del pueblo de María y de su hermana Marta. María era la misma que derramó perfume sobre el Señor y le secó los pies con sus cabellos. Su hermano Lázaro era el que estaba enfermo. Las hermanas enviaron a decir a Jesús: “Señor, el que tú amas, está enfermo.” Al oír esto, Jesús dijo: “Esta enfermedad no es mortal; es para gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.” Jesús quería mucho a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro. Sin embargo, cuando oyó que este se encontraba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba. Después dijo a sus discípulos: “Volvamos a Judea.” Los discípulos le dijeron: “Maestro, hace poco los judíos querían apedrearte, ¿quieres volver allá?” Jesús les respondió: “¿Acaso no son doce la horas del día? El que camina de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo; en cambio, el que camina de noche tropieza, porque la luz no está en él.” Después agregó: “Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero yo voy a despertarlo.” Sus discípulos le dijeron: “Señor, si duerme, se curará.” Ellos pensaban que hablaba del sueño, pero Jesús se refería a la muerte. Entonces les dijo abiertamente: “Lázaro ha muerto, y me alegro por ustedes de no haber estado allí, a fin de que crean. Al enterarse de que Jesús llegaba, Marta salió a su encuentro, mientras María permanecía en la casa. Marta dio a Jesús: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. Pero yo sé que aun ahora, Dios te concederá todo lo que le pidas.” Jesús le dijo: “Tu hermano resucitará.” Marta le respondió: “Sé que resucitará en la resurrección del último día.” Jesús le dijo: “Yo soy la Resurrección y la Vida. El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá: y todo el que vive y cree en mí, no morirá jamás. ¿Crees esto?” Ella le respondió: “Sí, Señor, creo que tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, el que debía venir al mundo.” Después fue a llamar a María, su hermana, y le dijo en voz baja: “El Maestro está aquí y te llama.” Al oír esto, ella se levantó rápidamente y fue a su encuentro. Jesús no había llegado todavía al pueblo, sino que estaba en el mismo sitio donde Marta lo había encontrado. Los Judíos que estaban en la casa consolando a María, al ver que esta se levantaba de repente y salía, la siguieron, pensando que iba al sepulcro para llorar allí. María llegó a donde estaba Jesús y, al verlo, se postró a sus pies y le dijo: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.” Jesús, al verla llorar a ella, y también a los judíos que la acompañaban, conmovido y turbado, preguntó: “¿Dónde lo pusieron?” Le respondieron: “Ven, Señor, y lo verás.” Y Jesús lloró. Los judíos dijeron: “¡Cómo lo amaba!” Pero algunos decían: “Este que abrió los ojos del ciego de nacimiento, ¿no podría impedir que Lázaro muriera?” Jesús, conmoviéndose nuevamente, llegó al sepulcro, que era una cueva con una piedra encima, y le dijo: “Quiten la piedra.” Marta, la hermana del difunto, le respondió: “Señor, huele mal; ya hace cuatro días que está muerto.” Jesús le dijo: “¿No te he dicho que si crees, verás la gloria de Dios?” Entonces quitaron la piedra, y Jesús, levantando los ojos al cielo, dijo: “Padre, te doy gracias porque me oíste. Yo sé que siempre me oyes, pero le he dicho por esta gente que me rodea, para que crean que tú me has enviado.” Después de decir esto, gritó con voz fuerte: “¡Lázaro, ven afuera!” El muerto salió con los pies y las manos atadas con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: “Desátenlo para que pueda caminar.” Al ver lo que hizo Jesús, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de María creyeron en él.

      Oleh sebab itu, bernubuatlah dan katakan kepada mereka: Beginilah firman Tuhan ALLAH: Sungguh, Aku membuka kubur-kuburmu dan membangkitkan kamu, hai umat-Ku, dari dalamnya, dan Aku akan membawa kamu ke tanah Israel. Dan kamu akan mengetahui bahwa Akulah TUHAN, pada saat Aku membuka kubur-kuburmu dan membangkitkan kamu, hai umat-Ku, dari dalamnya. Aku akan memberikan Roh-Ku ke dalammu, sehingga kamu hidup kembali dan Aku akan membiarkan kamu tinggal di tanahmu. Dan kamu akan mengetahui bahwa Aku, TUHAN, yang mengatakannya dan membuatnya, demikianlah firman TUHAN."

      Bacaan kedua (Roma 8: 8–11)

      Mereka yang hidup dalam daging, tidak mungkin berkenan kepada Allah. Tetapi kamu tidak hidup dalam daging, melainkan dalam Roh, jika memang Roh Allah diam di dalam kamu. Tetapi jika orang tidak memiliki Roh Kristus, ia bukan milik Kristus. Tetapi jika Kristus ada di dalam kamu, maka tubuh memang mati karena dosa, tetapi roh adalah kehidupan oleh karena kebenaran. Dan jika Roh Dia, yang telah membangkitkan Yesus dari antara orang mati, diam di dalam kamu, maka Ia, yang telah membangkitkan Kristus Yesus dari antara orang mati, akan menghidupkan juga tubuhmu yang fana itu oleh Roh-Nya, yang diam di dalam kamu.

    4. Bacaan Injil (Yohanes 11: 1–45)
      Pembacaan dari Injil kudus menurut Santo Yohanes.
      Ada seorang yang sedang sakit, namanya Lazarus. Ia tinggal di Betania, kampung Maria dan adiknya Marta. Maria ialah perempuan yang pernah meminyaki kaki Tuhan dengan minyak mur dan menyekanya dengan rambutnya. Dan Lazarus yang sakit itu adalah saudaranya. Kedua perempuan itu mengirim kabar kepada Yesus: "Tuhan, dia yang Engkau kasihi, sakit." Ketika Yesus mendengar kabar itu, Ia berkata: "Penyakit itu tidak akan membawa kematian, tetapi akan menyatakan kemuliaan Allah, sebab oleh penyakit itu Anak Allah akan dimuliakan." Yesus memang mengasihi Marta dan kakaknya dan Lazarus. Namun setelah didengar-Nya, bahwa Lazarus sakit, Ia sengaja tinggal dua hari lagi di tempat, di mana Ia berada; tetapi sesudah itu Ia berkata kepada murid-murid-Nya: "Mari kita kembali lagi ke Yudea." Murid-murid itu berkata kepada-Nya: "Rabi, baru-baru ini orang-orang Yahudi mencoba melempari Engkau, masih maukah Engkau kembali ke sana?" Jawab Yesus: "Bukankah ada dua belas jam dalam satu hari? Siapa yang berjalan pada siang hari, kakinya tidak terantuk, karena ia melihat terang dunia ini. Tetapi jikalau seorang berjalan pada malam hari, kakinya terantuk, karena terang tidak ada di dalam dirinya." Demikianlah perkataan-Nya, dan sesudah itu Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Lazarus, saudara kita, telah tertidur, tetapi Aku pergi ke sana untuk membangunkan dia dari tidurnya." Maka kata murid-murid itu kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, jikalau ia tertidur, ia akan sembuh." Tetapi maksud Yesus ialah tertidur dalam arti mati, sedangkan sangka mereka Yesus berkata tentang tertidur dalam arti biasa. Karena itu Yesus berkata dengan terus terang: "Lazarus sudah mati; tetapi syukurlah Aku tidak hadir pada waktu itu, sebab demikian lebih baik bagimu, supaya kamu dapat belajar percaya. Marilah kita pergi sekarang kepadanya." Lalu Tomas, yang disebut Didimus, berkata kepada teman-temannya, yaitu murid-murid yang lain: "Marilah kita pergi juga untuk mati bersama-sama dengan Dia." Maka ketika Yesus tiba, didapati-Nya Lazarus telah empat hari berbaring di dalam kubur. Betania terletak dekat Yerusalem, kira-kira dua mil jauhnya. Di situ banyak orang Yahudi telah datang kepada Marta dan Maria untuk menghibur mereka berhubung dengan kematian saudaranya. Ketika Marta mendengar, bahwa Yesus datang, ia pergi mendapatkan-Nya. Tetapi Maria tinggal di rumah. Maka kata Marta kepada Yesus: "Tuhan, sekiranya Engkau ada di sini, saudaraku pasti tidak mati. Tetapi sekarang pun aku tahu, bahwa Allah akan memberikan kepada-Mu segala sesuatu yang Engkau minta kepada-Nya." Kata Yesus kepada Marta: "Saudaramu akan bangkit." Kata Marta kepada-Nya: "Aku tahu bahwa ia akan bangkit pada waktu orang-orang bangkit pada akhir zaman." Jawab Yesus: "Akulah kebangkitan dan hidup; barangsiapa percaya kepada-Ku, ia akan hidup walaupun ia sudah mati, dan setiap orang yang hidup dan yang percaya kepada-Ku, tidak akan mati selama-lamanya. Percayakah engkau akan hal ini?" Jawab Marta: "Ya, Tuhan, aku percaya, bahwa Engkaulah Mesias, Anak Allah, Dia yang akan datang ke dalam dunia."

    5. Dan sesudah berkata demikian ia pergi memanggil saudaranya Maria dan berbisik kepadanya: "Guru ada di sana dan Ia memanggil engkau." Mendengar itu Maria segera bangkit lalu pergi mendapatkan Yesus. Tetapi waktu itu Yesus belum sampai ke dalam kampung itu. Ia masih berada di tempat Marta menjumpai Dia. Ketika orang-orang Yahudi yang bersama-sama dengan Maria di rumah itu untuk menghiburnya, melihat bahwa Maria segera bangkit dan pergi ke luar, mereka mengikutinya, karena mereka menyangka bahwa ia pergi ke kubur untuk meratap di situ. Setibanya Maria di tempat Yesus berada dan melihat Dia, tersungkurlah ia di depan kaki-Nya dan berkata kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, sekiranya Engkau ada di sini, saudaraku pasti tidak mati." Ketika Yesus melihat Maria menangis dan juga orang-orang Yahudi yang datang bersama-sama dia, maka masygullah hati-Nya. Ia sangat terharu dan berkata: "Di manakah dia kamu baringkan?" Jawab mereka: "Tuhan, marilah dan lihatlah!" Maka menangislah Yesus. Kata orang-orang Yahudi: "Lihatlah, betapa kasih-Nya kepadanya!" Tetapi beberapa orang di antaranya berkata: "Ia yang memelekkan mata orang buta, tidak sanggupkah Ia bertindak, sehingga orang ini tidak mati?" Maka masygullah pula hati Yesus, lalu Ia pergi ke kubur itu. Kubur itu adalah sebuah gua yang ditutup dengan batu. Kata Yesus: "Angkat batu itu!" Marta, saudara orang yang meninggal itu, berkata kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, ia sudah berbau, sebab sudah empat hari ia mati." Jawab Yesus: "Bukankah sudah Kukatakan kepadamu: Jikalau engkau percaya engkau akan melihat kemuliaan Allah?" Maka mereka mengangkat batu itu. Lalu Yesus menengadah ke atas dan berkata: "Bapa, Aku mengucap syukur kepada-Mu, karena Engkau telah mendengarkan Aku. Aku tahu, bahwa Engkau selalu mendengarkan Aku, tetapi oleh karena orang banyak yang berdiri di sini mengelilingi Aku, Aku mengatakannya, supaya mereka percaya, bahwa Engkaulah yang telah mengutus Aku." Dan sesudah berkata demikian, berserulah Ia dengan suara keras: "Lazarus, marilah ke luar!" Orang yang telah mati itu datang ke luar, kaki dan tangannya masih terikat dengan kain kapan dan mukanya tertutup dengan kain peluh. Kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Bukalah kain-kain itu dan biarkan ia pergi." Banyak di antara orang-orang Yahudi yang datang melawat Maria dan yang menyaksikan sendiri apa yang telah dibuat Yesus, percaya kepada-Nya.
