2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: January 16, 2011

First Reading (Isaiah 49: 3 and 5–6)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
The Lord stated to me, "You are Israel, my servant, through you I will be known." And now the Lord has spoken, he who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel to him. He stated: "It is not enough that you be my servant, to restore the tribes of Jacob, to bring back the remnant of Israel. I will make you the light of the nations, that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth."

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 1: 1–3)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.

From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and from Sosthenes, our brother, to God's Church which is in Corinth; to you whom God has sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with those who everywhere call upon your name of our Lord Christ Jesus, their Lord and ours. Receive grace and peace from God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel (John 1: 29–34)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.

The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and stated, "There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. It is he of whom I stated: A man comes after me who is already ahead of me, for he was before me. I myself did not know him, but I came baptizing to prepare for him, so that he might be revealed in Israel." And John also gave this testimony, "I saw the Spirit coming down on him like a dove from heaven and resting on him. I myself did not know him but God who sent me to baptize told me: 'You will see the Spirit coming down and resting on the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' Yes, I have seen! and I declare that this is the Chosen One of God.

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 40) (Verses 2, 4a, and 7-10)
The response is: Here I am, Lord; I have come to do your will.

With resolve I waited for the Lord; he listened and heard me beg. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

Sacrifice or oblation you did not desire; this you had me understand. Burnt offering and sin offering you do not require. Then I stated, "Here I come!"

As the scroll says of me, "To do your will is my delight, O God, for your law is within my heart."

In the great assembly I have proclaimed your saving help. My lips, O Lord, I did not seal – you know that very well.

  3. This is the Opening Prayer in the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Let us pray. Almighty and ever-present Father, your watchful care reaches from end to end and orders all things in such power that even the tensions and the tragedies of sin cannot frustrate your loving plans. Help us to embrace your will, give us the strength to follow your call, so that your truth may live in our hearts and reflect peace to those who believe in your love. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. (Amen)

  4. Father, may we celebrate the eucharist with reverence and love, for when we proclaim the death of the Lord, you continue the work of his redemption, who is Lord forever and ever. (Amen)

  5. Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. So great was your love that you gave us your Son as our redeemer. You sent him as one like ourselves, though free from sin, that you might see and love in us and what you see and love in Christ. Your gifts of grace, lost by disobedience, are now restored by the obedience of your Son. We praise you, Lord, with all the angels and saints in their song of joy. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)
