The Baptism of the Lord

Date: January 9, 2011

First Reading (Isaiah 42: 1-4 and 6-7)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight. I have put my spirit upon him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He does not shout or raise his voice; proclamations are not heard in the streets. A broken reed he will not crush, nor will he snuff out the light of the wavering wick. He will make justice appear in truth. He will not waver or be broken until he has established justice on earth; the islands are waiting for his law. I, the Lord, have called you for the sake of justice; I will hold your hand to make you firm; I will make you as a covenant to the people, and as a light to the nations, to open eyes that do not see, to free captives from prison, to bring out to light those who sit in darkness.

Second Reading (Acts 10: 34-38)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Peter then spoke to the people gathered in the house of Cornelius, stating: "Truly, I realize that God does not show partiality, but in all nations he listens to everyone who fears God and does good. And this is the message he has sent to the children of Israel, the good news of peace he has proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all. No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached. You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarean with Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all who were in the devil's power, because God was with him."

Gospel (Matthew 3: 13-17)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, and stated, "How is it you come to me; I should be baptized by you!" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be like that for now that we may fulfill the right order." John concurred. As soon as he was baptized, Jesus came up from the water. At once, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God come down like a dove and rest upon him. At the same time a voice from heaven was heard, "This is my Son, the Beloved; he is my Chosen One."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 29) (Verses 1-4 and 9c-10)
The response is: The Lord will bless his people with justice.

Give the Lord, O sons of God, give the Lord glory and strength, give the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in great liturgy.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over vast waters. How powerful is the voice of the Lord, How splenderous is the voice of the Lord.

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all cry, "Glory!" Over the flood the Lord was sitting; the Lord is king and he reigns forever.

  7. The blessing of the chalk and holy water is still available in Saint Theresia Church. You may acquire it if you want, it is your prerogative. All you have to do with the chalk is to inscribe it in the front of the door. (20 C + M + B 11).

  8. Wait, what is the purpose of having the chalk? I do not even have a blackboard.

  22. This is the Opening Prayer for the Baptism of the Lord.
Let us pray. Father in heaven, you revealed Christ as your Son by the voice that spoke over the waters of the Jordan. May all who share in the sonship of Christ follow his path of service to man, and reflect the glory of his kingdom even to the ends of the earth, for he is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

  23. Lord, we celebrate the revelation of Christ your Son who takes away the sins of the world. Accept our gifts and let them become one with his sacrifice for he is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

  24. Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. You celebrate your new gift of baptism by signs and wonders at the Jordan. Your voice was heard from heaven to awaken faith in the presence among us of the Word made man. Your Spirit was seen as a dove, revealing Jesus as your servant, and anointing him with joy as the Christ, sent to bring to the poor the good news of salvation. In our unending joy we echo on earth the song of the angels in heaven as they praise your glory forever. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)
