4th Sunday of Easter

Date: April 29, 2012

First Reading (Acts 4: 8-12)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke up, "Leaders of the people! Elders! It is a fact that we are being examined today for a good deed done to a cripple. How was he healed? You and all the people of Israel must know that this man stands before you cured through the Name of Jesus Christ the Nazarean. You had him crucified, but God raised him from the dead. Jesus is the stone rejected by you the builders which has become the cornerstone. There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other Name given to humankind all over the world by which we may be saved."

Second Reading (1 John 3: 1-2)
A reading from the letter of Saint John.
See what singular love the Father has for us: we are called children of God, and we really are. This is why the world does not know us, because it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children and what we shall be has not yet been shown. Yet when he appears in his glory, we know that we shall be like him, for then we shall see him as he is.

Gospel (John 10: 11-18)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus stated this to the Pharisees, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. Not so the hired hand or any other person who is not the shepherd and to whom the sheep do not belong. They abandon the sheep as soon as they see the wolf coming; then the wolf snatches and scatters the sheep. This is because the hired hand works for pay and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father. Because of this I give my life for my sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this fold. These I have to lead as well, and they shall listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock since there is one Shepherd. The Father loves me because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down freely. It is mine to lay down and to take up again: this mission I received from my Father."

    1. Remember, it is noted that the songs are more joyful than before. The Roman version is nullified since it is Easter.

  4. In this is the Collect for the 4th Sunday of Easter.
Let us pray. Almighty ever-living God, lead us to a share in the joys of heaven, so that the humble flock may reach where the brave Shepherd has gone before. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  5. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 118) (Verses 1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, and 28-29)
The response is: The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. (Or you may say Alleluia!)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his loving kindness endures forever. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in the help of humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in the might of princes.

I thank you for having answered me, for having rescued me. The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. This was the Lord's doing and we marvel at it.

Blessed is he who comes in the Lord's name! We bless you from the house of the Lord. You are my God, and I give you thanks. You are my God, and I give you praise. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!

For the stray sheep, for those who leave the Church by the backdoor, those who are attracted by false shepherds, and for all whom the Good Shepherd is seeking to unite around him, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, unite us in your love.
For the wolves threatening the flock, those who persecute the faithful, all who try to stifle all religious expression and all who clse their ears to Christ's voice, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, unite us in your love.
For the many communities without shepherds, for the leaderless loners groping their way, for divided and loveless communities, for faithful shepherds misunderstood by their people, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, unite us in your love.

For all of us, here, present today to the deliverance of fear, sorrows, pain, and affliction. May we find comfort, joy, and love in our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, unite us in your love.

  8. Grant that we pray, O lord, that we may always find delight in these paschal mysteries, so that the renewal constantly at work within us may be the cause of our unending joy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  9. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, at all times to acclaim you, O lord, but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously, when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. For with the old order destroyed, a universe cast down is renewed, and integrity of life is restored to us in Christ. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land and every people exults in your praise and even the heavenly Powers, with the angelic hosts, sing together the unending hymn of your glory, as they acclaim...

  11. Bow your heads and pray for God's blessing.
May God, who by the Resurrection of his Only Begotten Son was pleased to confer on you the gift of redemption and of adoption, give you gladness by his blessing. Amen.
May he, by whose redeeming work you have received the gift of everlasting freedom, make you heirs to an eternal inheritance. Amen.
And may you, who have already risen with Christ in Baptism through faith, by living in a right manner on this earth, be united with him in the homeland of heaven. Amen.
And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you forever. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Therefore, let us go in peace and to be united in Jesus, our good shepherd. Thanks be to God.
