The day already comes, flaming as a furnace. On that day all the proud and evildoers will be burned like straw in the fire. They will be left without branches or roots. On the other hand the sun of justice will shine upon you who respect my Name and bring health in its rays. You will come out leaping like fattened calves.
Second Reading (2 Thessalonians 3: 7–12)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.
You know how you ought to follow our example: we worked while we were with you. Day and night we labored and toiled so as not to be a burden to any of you. We had the right to act otherwise, but we wanted to give you an example. Besides, while we were with you, we stated clearly: If anyone is not willing to work, neither should that one eat. However, we heard that some among you live in idleness — busybodies, doing no work. In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord we command these people to work and earn their own living.

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stone-work and rich gifts, Jesus stated to them, "The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down." Jesus then stated, "Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and stating: 'I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand.' Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, do not be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon." And Jesus stated, "Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen. Before all this happens, people will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and be put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves."

Y como algunos, hablando del Templo, decían que estaba adornado con hermosas piedras y ofrendas votivas, Jesús dijo: “De todo lo que ustedes contemplan, un día no quedará piedra sobre piedra: todo será destruido.” Ellos le preguntaron “Maestro, ¿cuándo tendrá lugar esto, y cuál será la señal de que va suceder?” Jesús respondió: “Tengan cuidado, no se dejen engañar, porque muchos se presentarán en mi Nombre, diciendo: ‘Soy yo’, y también: ‘El tiempo está cerca.’ No los sigan. Cuando oigan hablar de guerras y revoluciones no se alarmen; es necesario que esto ocurra antes, pero no llegará tan pronto el fin.” Después les dijo: “Se levantará nación contra nación y reino contra reino. Habrá grandes terremotos; peste y hambre en muchas partes; se verán también fenómenos aterradores y grandes señales en cielo. Pero antes de todo eso, los detendrán, los perseguirán, los entregarán a las sinagogas y serán encarcelados; los llevarán ante reyes y gobernadores a causa de mi Nombre, y esto les sucederá para que puedan dar testimonio de mí. どういう生活をすればよいかは、もうよくわかっているはずです。私たちは、そちらで、だらしのない生活をしたことはありません。それを手本にしてください。私たちは、だれからも、ただでパンをもらいませんでした。だれにも負担をかけたくなかったので、必要な物は、昼夜働いて得た収入で手に入れました。私たちにそれを要求する権利がなかったからではなく、自分の生活は自分で支えるという模範を、身をもって示したかったのです。そちらにいた時にも、「働かない者は食べる資格がない」と教えたはずです。ところが聞くところによると、あなたがたの中には働くのをいやがり、一日中ぶらぶらして、うわさ話ばかりしている人がいるということです。そういう人たちに、主イエス・キリストの名によって忠告し、また命じます。腰を落ち着けて、まじめに仕事に精を出し、自活できるようになりなさい。

弟子たちの何人かが、宮のすばらしい石細工や壁の装飾に目を奪われ、感心していました。するとイエスは、彼らに言われました。「今は賞賛の的になっているこれらのものが、一つも崩れずにほかの石の上に残らないほど完全に破壊され、瓦礫の山となる日がもうすぐ来ます。」驚いた弟子たちが質問しました。「いつのことですか！ その前に、何か前兆があるのでしょうか。」イエスはお答えになりました。「だれにもだまされないようにしなさい。『私がキリストだ。今こそ時が来た』と言う者が大ぜい現れるからです。そういう人々を信じてはいけません。また、戦争や暴動が始まったということを聞いても、あわてふためかないようにしなさい。戦争は必ず起こりますが、すぐに終わりが来るわけではありません。民族は民族に、国は国に敵対して立ち上がり、すさまじい地震が起こり、多くの国がききんに見舞われ、伝染病が流行し、恐ろしい異変が天に現れます。しかし、これらのことが起こる前に、まず大きな迫害の時代が来ます。あなたがたは、わたしを信じているばかりに、会堂や牢獄、王や総督の前に引き立てて行かれます。その結果、かえってメシヤ（救い主）のことが広く知られ、あがめられるようになるのです。だから、人々の訴えにどう釈明しようかと心配してはいけません。答えることは、わたしが教えてあげます。どんな反対者も反論できないことばと知恵です。最も身近な両親、兄弟、親類、友人までもがあなたがたを裏切るようになるでしょう。中には殺される者もあります。わたしの弟子だというので、みながあなたがたを憎むようになるでしょう。しかし、あなたがたの髪の毛一本さえ失われることはありません。忍耐して忍び通せば、いのちを得るのです。

For through his Paschal Mystery, he accomplished the marvelous deed, by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and people for our own possession, to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim…

Much is changing today, some for the better and some for the worse. We seem to be at a turning point in history both in the church and in the world. There is much anxiety among people. [The point is not: Is this the end of the world?] But we should leave that to the Lord. It is rather: What do we do to make this world humane, livable, and in conformity with the message of the gospel? May we prepare for the Lord's coming with the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, † and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Therefore, let us go in peace, and put our trust and hope in Christ. Thanks be to God.
