The Baptism of the Lord

Date: January 13, 2019

New American Bible readings
First reading (Isaiah 42: 1–4 and 6–7) (Option 1)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

First reading (Isaiah 40: 1–5 and 9–11) (Option 2)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. Go up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by a strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

Second reading (Acts 10: 34–38) (Option 1)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him."

Second reading (Titus 2: 11–14 and 3: 4–7) (Option 2)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to Titus.
Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Gospel (Luke 3: 15–16 and 21–22)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you, I am well pleased."

Catholic Pastoral Edition Bible readings
First reading (Isaiah 42: 1–4 and 6–7) (Option 1)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight. I have put my spirit upon him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He does not shout or raise his voice; proclamations are not heard in the streets. A broken reed he will not crush, nor will he snuff out the light of the wavering wick. He will make justice appear in truth. He will not waver or be broken until he has established justice on earth; the islands are waiting for his law. I, the Lord, have called you for the sake of justice; I will hold your hand to make you firm; I will make you as a covenant to the people, and as a light to the nations, to open eyes that do not see, to free captives from prison, to bring out to light those who sit in darkness.

First reading (Isaiah 40: 1–5 and 9–11) (Option 2)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Be comforted, my people, be strengthened, says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, proclaim to her that her time of bondage is at an end, that her guilt has been paid for, that from the hand of the Lord, she has received double punishment for all her iniquity. A voice cries, "In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up; every mountain and hill will be laid low. The stumbling blocks shall become level and the rugged places smooth. The glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mortals together will see it; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." Go up onto the high mountain, messenger of Zion, lift up your voices with strength, fear not to cry aloud when you tell Jerusalem and announce to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes your God with might; his strong arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and here before him is his booty. Like a shepherd he tends his flock: he gathers the lambs in his arms, he carries them in his bosom, gently leading those that are with young.

Second reading (Acts 10: 34–38) (Option 1)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Peter then spoke to them, "Truly, I realize that God does not show partiality, but in all nations he listens to everyone who fears God and does good. And this is the message he has sent to the children of Israel, the good news of peace he has proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all. No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached. You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarean with Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all who were under the devil's power, because God was with him."

Second reading (Titus 2: 11–14 and 3: 4–7) (Option 2)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to Titus.
Beloved: For God Savior has revealed his loving plan to all, teaching us to reject an irreligious way of life and worldly greed, and to live in this world as responsible persons, upright and serving God, while we await our blessed hope — the glorious manifestation of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave himself for us, to redeem us from every evil and to purify a people he wanted to be his own and dedicated to what is good. But God our Savior revealed his eminent goodness and love for humankind and saved us, not because of good deeds we may have done but for the sake of his own mercy. He gave us rebirth in baptism and renewed us by the Holy Spirit poured over us through Christ Jesus our Savior. By the grace of God we were made holy and now we hope for everlasting life, our inheritance.

Gospel (Luke 3: 15–16 and 21–22)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
The people were wondering about John's identity, "Could he be the Messiah?" Then John answered them, "I baptize you with water, but the one who is coming will do much more: he will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire. As for me, I am not worthy to untie his sandal." Now, with all the people who came to be baptized, Jesus too was baptized. Then, while he was praying, the heavens opened: the Holy Spirit came down upon him in the bodily form of a dove and a voice from heaven was heard, "You are my Son, this day I have begotten you."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 29) (Verses 1–4 and 9–10)
The response is: The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God, give to the LORD glory and praise, give to the LORD the glory due his name; adore the LORD in holy attire.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the LORD, over vast waters. The voice of the LORD is mighty; the voice of the LORD is majestic.

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, "Glory!" The LORD is enthroned above the flood; the LORD is enthroned as king forever.

  2. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 104) (Verses 1–4, 24–25, and 27–30)
The response is: O bless the Lord, my soul.

    O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, robed in light as with a cloak. You have spread out the heavens like a tent-cloth;

You have constructed your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot; you travel on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers, and flaming fire your ministers.

How manifold are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you have wrought them all—the earth is full of your creatures; the sea also, great and wide, in which are schools without number of living things both small and great.

They look to you to give them food in due time. When you give it to them, they gather it; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

If you take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

  5. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 29) (Verses 1–4 and 9–10)
The response is: The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give the Lord, O sons of God, give the Lord glory and strength, give the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in great liturgy.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over vast waters. How powerful is the voice of the Lord, how splendorous is the voice of the Lord.

The voice of the Lord makes the oaks shudder, the Lord strip the forests bare, and his temple all cry, "Glory!" Over the flood the Lord was sitting; the Lord is king and he reigns forever.

The response is: O bless the Lord, my soul.

Bless the Lord, my soul! Clothed in majesty and splendor; O Lord, my God, how great you are! You are wrapped in light as with a garment, and you stretch out the heavens like a tent.

You build your upperrooms above the waters; you make the clouds your chariot and ride on the wings of the wind; you make the winds your messengers, and fire and flame your ministers.

How varied O Lord, are your works! In wisdom you have made them all — the earth full of your creatures; behold the sea, wide and vast, teeming with countless creatures, living things both great and small.

They all look to you for their food in due time. You give it to them, and they gather it up; you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they vanish, you take away their breath, they expire and return to the dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

Consuelen, dice Yahvé, tu Dios, consuelen a mi pueblo.

  8. Unang pagbabasa (Isaias 42: 1–4 at 6–7) (Unang pagpili)

Unang pagbabasa (Isaiah 40: 1–5 at 9–11) (Pangalawang pagpili)

Pangalawang pagbabasa (Tito 2: 11–14 at 3: 4–7) (Pangalawang pagpili)

    2. Ebanghelyo (Lucas 3: 15–16 at 21–22)
