Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it, he must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune. For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night, his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.
Second reading (Colossians 3: 1–5 and 9–11)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.
Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

There, there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, circumcised and uncircumcised. There are no strangers, barbarians, slave and free, but Christ is all and is in all.

And Jesus continued with this story, "There was a rich man and his land had produced a good harvest. He thought: 'What shall I do? For I am short of room to store my harvest.' So this is what he planned: 'I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones to store all this grain, which is my wealth. Then I may say to myself: My friend, you have a lot of good things put by for many years. Rest, eat, drink and enjoy yourself.' But God stated to him: "You fool. This very night your life will be taken from you; tell me, who shall get all you have put aside?" This is the lot of the one who stores up riches instead of amassing for God."

You make an end of them in their sleep; the next morning they are like the changing grass, which at dawn springs up anew, but by evening wilts and fades.
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants!
Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. And may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands!

¡Vanidad, pura vanidad!, dice Cohélet. ¡Vanidad, pura vanidad! ¡Nada más que vanidad! Porque un hombre que ha trabajado con sabiduría, con ciencia y eficacia, tiene que dejar su parte a otro que no hizo ningún esfuerzo. También esto es vanidad y una grave desgracia. ¿Qué le reporta al hombre todo su esfuerzo y todo lo que busca afanosamente bajo el sol? Porque todos sus días son penosos, y su ocupación, un sufrimiento; ni siquiera de noche descansa su corazón. También esto es vanidad.
Salmo responsivo (Salmo 90) (Versículos 3–6, 12–14, y 17)
La respuesta es: Si hoy oyes su voz, no endurezcas demasiado tu corazón.
• Tú haces que los hombres vuelvan al polvo, con sólo decirles: ‘Vuelvan, seres humanos’. Porque mil años son ante tus ojos como el día de ayer, que ya pasó, como una vigilia de la noche.

Les dijo entonces una parábola: “Había un hombre rico, cuyas tierras habían producido mucho, y se preguntaba a sí mismo ‘¿Qué voy a hacer? No tengo dónde guardar mi cosecha’. Después pensó: ‘Voy a hacer esto: demoleré mis graneros, construiré otros más grandes y amontonaré allí todo mi trigo y mis bienes, y diré a mi alma: Alma mía, tienes bienes almacenados para muchos años; descansa, come, bebe y date buena vida’. Kesia-siaan belaka, kata Pengkhotbah, kesia-siaan belaka, segala sesuatu adalah sia-sia. Sebab, kalau ada orang berlelah-lelah dengan hikmat, pengetahuan dan kecakapan, maka ia harus meninggalkan bahagiannya kepada orang yang tidak berlelah-lelah untuk itu. Inipun kesia-siaan dan kemalangan yang besar. Apakah faedahnya yang diperoleh manusia dari segala usaha yang dilakukannya dengan jerih payah di bawah matahari dan dari keinginan hatinya? Seluruh hidupnya penuh kesedihan dan pekerjaannya penuh kesusahan hati, bahkan pada malam hari hatinya tidak tenteram. Inipun sia-sia.

“Napakawalang kabuluhan! Napakawalang kabuluhan; lahat ay walang kabuluhan,” sabi ng Mangangaral. Lahat ng pinagpaguran ng tao'y pinamuhunan niya ng karunungan, kaalaman at kakayahan ngunit pagdating ng araw ay iba ang magpapakasaya sa mga pinagpaguran niya. Ito ay walang kabuluhan, at ito'y hindi tama. Nagpapakapagod at nagpapakahirap nang husto sa mundong ito ang isang tao, ngunit para saan ba ang pagpapagod na ito? Anumang gawin ng tao'y nagdudulot sa kanya ng balisa at hinanakit. May mga gabi pang hindi siya makatulog sa pag-iisip. Ito man ay walang kabuluhan.

思うに、この世に価値のあるものなどない。すべてがむなしい。生涯をかけて知恵や知識や技術を追求しても、せっかく手に入れたものを全部、何もしなかった者に譲るはめになるのです。そんな者が、私が努力して得たものを受け継ぐのです。むなしいだけでなく、不公平です。どれほど必死に働いても何の役にも立ちません。あるものといえば、悲しみと悩みに押しつぶされそうな、心の休まらない日々と眠れない夜です。全くむなしい話ではありませんか。
第二読み物（コロサイ人第3章：第1詩–第5詩と第9詩–第11詩）

キリストが死からよみがえられた時、あなたがたも共によみがえったのですから、天にある無尽蔵の富と喜びに目を向けなさい。そこでは、キリストが栄誉と力とを帯びて、神の右の座についておられます。地上のことをあれこれ気に病まず、天上のことで心を満たされていなさい。一度死んだわけですから、あなたがたの真のいのちは、キリストと共に天の神のもとにあるのです。真のいのちであるキリストが再び戻って来られる時、あなたがたも彼と共に輝き、そのすべての栄光にあずかるのです。ですから、罪深い肉欲を捨てなさい。性的な罪、汚れ、情欲、恥ずべき欲望などと縁を切りなさい。この世の富や快楽を慕い求めてはいけません。それは、神でないものを神とする、偶像礼拝だからです。だまし合いはやめなさい。うそは、あらゆる悪にまみれた古いいのちの特徴でした。しかしすでに、その古いいのちは死んだのです。あなたがたは新しいいのちに生きています。正しいことへの探究心を強め、ますます、この新しいいのちを与えてくださったキリストに似る者となるよう努めましょう。そこでは、国籍、人種、教育、社会的地位の違いなどは全く問題ではありません。大切なのは、キリストをしっかりつかんでいるかどうかです。そして、キリストを自分のものにする機会は、だれにも平等に与えられているのです。
福音書（ルカ第12章：第13詩–第21詩）
この読み物はルカの福音書です。
その時、群衆の中から一人の男が叫びました。「先生！ どうぞ兄に、父の遺産を分けてくれるよう言ってください。」「だれがわたしを、そんなことの裁判官にしたのですか。」続けてイエスは群衆に言われました。「貪欲にはくれぐれも注意しなさい。どんな金持ちでも、人のいのちは財産とは無関係なのですから。」それからイエスは、たとえ話を一つなさいました。「ある金持ちが、良い作物のとれる肥えた畑を持っていました。倉はいっぱいで、収穫物を全部納めきれないほどです。あれこれ考えたあげく、うまい考えを思いつきました。『こうすればいい。あの倉を取りこわして、もっと大きいのを建てる。そうすれば、作物を全部納められる。』ひとり満足した金持ちは、われとわが身に言い聞かせたのです。『もう何も心配はいらないぞ。これから先何年分もの食料がたっぷりある。さあ、食べて、飲んで、楽しくやろう。』しかし神は、こう言われました。『愚か者よ！ あなたのいのちは、今夜にもなくなる。そうしたら、ここにある物は、いったいだれのものになるのか。』いいですか。この地上でいくらため込んでも、天国に財産を持っていない者は、愚か者なのです。」
