First reading (Sirach 3: 2–6 and 12–14) (Option 1)
A reading from the book of Sirach.
God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fails, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins—a house raised in justice to you.
First reading (Genesis 15: 1–6 and 21: 1–3) (Option 2 for Year B)
A reading from the book of Genesis.
The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying: "Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great." But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?" Abram continued, "See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir." Then the word of the LORD came to him: "No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir." The Lord took Abram outside and said, "Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so," he added, "shall your descendants be." Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him.
Second reading (Colossians 3: 12–21) (Option 1)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.
Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.
Second reading (Hebrews 11: 8, 11–12 and 17–19) (Option 2 for Year B)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
Brothers and sisters: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age—and Sarah herself was sterile—for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name." He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol.
Gospel (Luke 2: 22–40)

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted—and you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

The Lord established that children should respect their father; he confirmed the right of the mother over her children. Whoever honors his father atones for his sins; he who gives glory to his mother prepares a treasure for himself. Whoever honors his father will receive joy from his own children and will be heard when he prays. Whoever glorifies his father will have a long life. Whoever obeys the Lord gives comfort to his mother. My child, take care of your father in his old age, do not cause him sorrow as long has he lives. Even if he has lost his mind, have patience; do not be disrespectful to him while you are in full health. For kindness done to one's father will never be forgotten, it will serve as reparation for your sins.

After this the word of the lord was spoken to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great!" Abram stated, "My Lord God, where are your promises? I am still childless and all I have will go to Eliezer of Damascus. You have given me no children, so a slave of mine will be my heir." Then the word of the Lord was spoken to him again, "Eliezer will not be your heir, but a child born of you (your own flesh and blood) will be your heir." Then the Lord brought him outside and stated to him, "Look up at the sky and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that." Abram believed the Lord who, because of this, held him to be an upright man. The Lord was kind to Sarah as he had stated, and fulfilled his promise to her. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time the Lord had promised. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son that Sarah bore him.
Second reading (Colossians 3: 12–21) (Option 1)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.
Clothe yourselves, then, as is fitting for God's chosen people, holy and beloved of him. Put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience to bear with one another and forgive whenever there is any occasion to do so. As the Lord has forgiven you, forgive one another. When you have put on all these, take love as your belt so that the dress be perfect. May the peace of Christ overflow in your hearts; for this end you were called to be one body. And be thankful. Let the word of God dwell in you in all its richness. Teach and admonish one another with words of wisdom. With thankful hearts sing to God psalms, hymns and spontaneous praise. And whatever you do or say, do it in the Name of Jesus, the Lord, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as you should do in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not get angry with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, because that pleases the Lord. Parents, do not be too demanding of your children, lest they become discouraged.
Second reading (Hebrews 11: 8, 11–12 and 17–19) (Option 2 for Year B)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
It was by faith that Abraham, called be God, set out for a country that would be given to him as an inheritance; for he parted without knowing where he was going. By faith Sarah herself received power to become a mother, in spite of her advanced age; since she believed that he who had made the promise would be faithful. Therefore, from an almost impotent man were born descendants as numerous as the stars of heavens, as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. By faith Abraham went to offer Isaac when God tested him. And so he who had received the promise of God offered his only son although God had told him: Isaac's descendants will bear your name. Abraham reasoned that God is capable even of raising the dead, and he received back his son, which has a figurative meaning.
Gospel (Luke 2: 22–40)

When the day came for the purification according to the law of Moses, they brought the baby up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to God. And they offered a sacrifice as order in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. There lived in Jerusalem at this time a very upright and devout man named Simeon; the Holy Spirit was in him. He looked forward to the time when the Lord would comfort Israel, and he had been assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Messiah of the Lord. So he was led into the Temple by the Holy Spirit at the time the parents brought the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law. Simeon took the child in his arms and blessed God, stating, "Now, O Lord, you may dismiss your servant in peace, for you have fulfilled your word and my eyes have seen your salvation, which you display for all the people to see. Here is the light you will reveal to the nations and the glory of your people Israel." His father and mother wondered at what was stated about the child. Simeon blessed them and stated to Mary, his mother, "See him; he will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light." There was also a prophetess named Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. After leaving her father's home, she had been seven years with her husband, and since then she had been continually about the Temple, serving God as a widow night and day in fasting and prayer. Porque el Señor quiere que el padre sea respetado por sus hijos y confirmó el derecho de la madre sobre ellos. El que honra a su padre expía sus pecados y el que respeta a su madre es como quien acumula un tesoro. El que honra a su padre encontrará alegría en sus hijos y cuando ore, será escuchado. El que respeta a su padre tendrá larga vida y el que obedece al Señor da tranquilidad a su madre. Hijo mío, socorre a tu padre en su vejez y no le causes tristeza mientras viva. Aunque pierda su lucidez, sé indulgente con él; no lo desprecies, tú que estás en pleno vigor. La ayuda prestada a un padre no caerá en el olvido y te servirá de reparación por tus pecados.
Primera lectura (Génesis 15: 1–6 y 21: 1–3) (2ª opción)

Después de estos sucesos, Yahvé dirigió su palabra a Abram en una visión, y le dijo: “No temas, Abram, yo soy tu escudo. Tu recompensa será muy grande.” Abram respondió: “Señor Yahvé, ¿qué me quieres dar? Soy un hombre sin hijos, y todo lo que poseo pasará a Eliezer de Damasco. Ya que no me diste descendencia, tendré por heredero a uno de mis sirvientes.” Entonces le llegó una palabra de Yahvé: “Tu heredero no será Eliezer, sino un hijo tuyo, nacido de tu propia carne y sangre.” Yahvé lo sacó afuera y le dijo: “Mira al cielo y cuenta las estrellas, si puedes. Por la fe Abrahán, llamado por Dios, obedeció la orden de salir para un país que recibiría en herencia, y partió sin saber adónde iba. Por la fe pudo tener un hijo a pesar de su avanzada edad y de que Sara era también estéril, pues tuvo confianza en el que se lo prometía. Por eso de este hombre únicamente, ya casi impotente, nacieron descendientes tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo e innumerables como los granos de arena de las orillas del mar. Por la fe Abrahán fue a sacrificar a Isaac cuando Dios quiso ponerlo a prueba; estaba ofreciendo al hijo único que debía heredar la promesa y Dios le había dicho: Por Isaac tendrás descendientes que llevarán tu nombre. Abrahán pensó seguramente: Dios es capaz de resucitar a los muertos. Por eso recobró a su hijo, lo que tiene un sentido simbólico para nosotros.
Evangelio (Lucas 2: 22–40)

Cuando llegó el día fijado por la Ley de Moisés para la purificación, llevaron al niño a Jerusalén para presentarlo al Señor, como está escrito en la Ley: ‘Todo varón primogénito será consagrado al Señor.’ También debían ofrecer un sacrificio un par de tórtolas o de pichones de paloma, como ordena la Ley del Señor. Vivía entonces en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón, que era justo y piadoso, y esperaba el consuelo de Israel. El Espíritu Santo estaba en él y le había revelado que no moriría antes de ver al Mesías del Señor. Conducido por el mismo Espíritu, fue al Templo, y cuando los padres de Jesús llevaron al niño para cumplir con él las prescripciones de la Ley, el ángel lo tomó en sus brazos y alabó a Dios, diciendo: Ahora, Señor, puedes dejar que tu servidor muera en paz, como lo has prometido, porque mis ojos han visto la salvación preparaste delante de todos los pueblos: luz para iluminar a las naciones paganas y gloria de tu pueblo Israel.” Su padre y su madre estaban admirados por lo que oían decir de él. Simeón, después de bendecirlos, dijo a María, la madre: “Este niño será causa de caída y de elevación para muchos en Israel; será signo de contradicción, a ti misma una espada te atravesará el corazón. Así se manifestarán claramente los pensamientos íntimos de muchos.” Había también allí una profetisa llamada Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la familia de Aser, mujer ya entrada en años, que, casa en su juventud, había vivido siete años con su marido. Desde entonces había permanecido viuda, y tenía ochenta y cuatro años. No se apartaba del Templo, sirviendo a Dios noche y día con ayunos y oraciones. Se presentó en ese mismo momento y se puso a dar gracias a Dios. Y hablaba acerca del niño a todos los que esperaban la redención de Jerusalén. Después de cumplir todo lo que ordenaba la Ley del Señor, volvieron a su ciudad de Nazaret, en Galilea. El niño iba creciendo y se fortalecía, lleno de sabiduría, y la gracia de Dios estaba con él.

Ikalawang pagbasa (Mga Hebreo 11: 8, 11–12 at 17–19) (ikalawang pagpili)
Ang pagbasa mula sa sulat ni San Pablo sa mga Hebreo.
Dahil sa pananampalataya, sumunod si Abraham nang siya'y utusan ng Diyos upang pumunta sa isang lupaing ipinangako sa kanya. Sumunod nga siya, kahit hindi niya alam kung saan siya pupunta. Dahil din sa pananampalataya, si Abraham ay nagkaroon ng kakayahang maging ama, kahit na siya'y matanda na at kahit si Sara ay hindi na maaaring magkaanak pa. Nanalig siyang tutuparin ng Diyos ang kanyang pangako. Kaya't sa isang taong maituturing na halos patay na ay nagmula ang isang lahi na naging sindami ng bituin sa langit at ng di mabilang na buhangin sa dalampasigan. Nang subukin ng Diyos si Abraham, pananampalataya din ang nag-udyok sa kanya na ialay si Isaac bilang handog sa Diyos. Buong puso niyang inihandog ang kaisa-isa niyang anak, gayong ipinangako sa kanya ng Diyos na kay Isaac magmumula ang magiging lahi niya. Naniwala siya na kaya ng Diyos na bumuhay ng patay, kaya't sa patalinghagang pangungusap, naibalik nga sa kanya si Isaac mula sa mga patay.

Nang sumapit ang araw ng kanilang pagtupad sa seremonya ng paglilinis ayon sa Kautusan ni Moises, pumunta sila sa Jerusalem. Dinala nila ang sanggol upang iharap sa Panginoon, sapagkat ganito ang nasusulat sa Kautusan ng Panginoon, “Bawat panganay na lalaki ay itatalaga sa Panginoon.” Nag-alay din sila ng handog ayon sa nakasaad sa Kautusan ng Panginoon: magkapares na ibong batu-bato, o kaya'y dalawang inakay na kalapati. May isang tao noon sa Jerusalem na ang pangala'y Simeon, isang lalaking matuwid, may takot sa Diyos at naghihintay sa katubusan ng Israel. Nasa kanya ang Espiritu Santo. Ipinahayag ng Espiritu Santo sa kanya na hindi siya mamamatay hangga't hindi niya nakikita ang Cristo na ipinangako ng Panginoon. Sa patnubay ng Espiritu, si Simeon ay pumasok sa Templo. At nang dalhin doon nina Jose at Maria ang sanggol na si Jesus upang tuparin ang ayon sa itinatakda ng Kautusan, kinarga ni Simeon ang sanggol. Pagkatapos, nagpuri siya sa Diyos, “Ngayon, Panginoon, maaari na pong yumaong mapayapa ang inyong abang alipin ayon sa inyong pangako. Yamang nakita na po ng aking mga mata ang inyong pagliligtas, na inyong inihanda sa harapan ng lahat ng bansa. Ito po ay liwanag na tatanglaw sa mga Hentil at magbibigay-dangal sa inyong bansang Israel.” Namangha ang mga magulang ng sanggol dahil sa sinabi ni Simeon tungkol sa bata. Binasbasan sila ni Simeon, at sinabi kay Maria, “Tandaan mo, ang batang ito'y nakatalaga sa ikapapahamak o ikaliligtas ng marami sa Israel. Siya ang magiging tanda mula sa Diyos ngunit tutuligsain siya ng marami, kaya't mahahayag ang kanilang iniisip. Dahil dito, magdaranas ka ng matinding kapighatiang parang isang patalim na itinarak sa iyong puso.” Naroon din sa Templo ang isang propetang babae na ang pangalan ay Ana, anak ni Fanuel at mula sa lipi ni Asher. Siya'y napakatanda na. Pitong taon lamang silang nagsama ng kanyang asawa, at ngayo'y walumpu't apat na taon na siyang biyuda. Lagi siya sa Templo at araw-gabi'y sumasamba sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ng pag-aayuno at pananalangin. Nang oras na iyon, lumapit siya kina Jose at Maria at nagpasalamat sa Diyos. Nagsalita rin siya tungkol sa sanggol sa lahat ng naghihintay sa pagpapalaya ng Diyos sa Jerusalem. Nang maisagawa na nila ang lahat ng ayon sa itinatakda ng kautusan ng Panginoon, umuwi na sila sa bayan ng Nazaret sa Galilea. Ang bata'y lumaking malusog, puspos ng karunungan, at kalugud-lugod sa Diyos.

Memang Tuhan telah memuliakan bapa pada anak-anaknya, dan hak ibu atas para anaknya diteguhkan-Nya. Barangsiapa menghormati bapanya memulihkan dosa, dan siapa memuliakan ibunya serupa dengan orang yang mengumpulkan harta. Barangsiapa menghormati bapanya, ia sendiri akan mendapat kesukaan pada anak-anaknya pula, dan apabila bersembahyang, niscaya doanya dikabulkan. Barangsiapa memuliakan bapanya akan panjang umurnya, dan orang yang taat kepada Tuhan menenangkan ibunya. Anakku, tolonglah bapamu pada masa tuanya, jangan menyakiti hatinya di masa hidupnya. Pun pula kalau akalnya sudah berkurang hendaklah kaumaafkan, jangan menistakannya sewaktu engkau masih berdaya. Kebaikan yang ditunjukkan kepada bapa tidak sampai terlupa, melainkan dibilang sebagai pemulihan segala dosamu.

Kemudian datanglah firman TUHAN kepada Abram dalam suatu penglihatan: "Janganlah takut, Abram, Akulah perisaimu; upahmu akan sangat besar." Abram menjawab: "Ya Tuhan ALLAH, apakah yang akan Engkau berikan kepadaku, karena aku akan meninggal dengan tidak mempunyai anak, dan yang akan mewarisi rumahku ialah Eliezer, orang Damsyik itu." Lagi kata Abram: "Engkau tidak memberikan kepadaku keturunan, sehingga seorang hambaku nanti menjadi ahli warisku." Tetapi datanglah firman TUHAN kepadanya, demikian: "Orang ini tidak akan menjadi ahli warismu, melainkan anak kandungmu, dialah yang akan menjadi ahli warismu." Lalu TUHAN membawa Abram ke luar serta berfirman: "Coba lihat ke langit, hitunglah bintang-bintang, jika engkau dapat menghitungnya." Maka firman-Nya kepadanya: "Demikianlah banyaknya nanti keturunanmu." Lalu percayalah Abram kepada TUHAN, maka TUHAN memperhitungkan hal itu kepadanya sebagai kebenaran. TUHAN memperhatikan Sara, seperti yang difirmankan-Nya, dan TUHAN melakukan kepada Sara seperti yang dijanjikan-Nya. Maka mengandunglah Sara, lalu ia melahirkan seorang anak laki-laki bagi Abraham dalam masa tuanya, pada waktu yang telah ditetapkan, sesuai dengan firman Allah kepadanya. Abraham menamai anaknya yang baru lahir itu Ishak, yang dilahirkan Sara baginya.

Karena itu, sebagai orang-orang pilihan Allah yang dikuduskan dan dikasihi-Nya, kenakanlah belas kasihan, kemurahan, kerendahan hati, kelemahlembutan dan kesabaran. Sabarlah kamu seorang terhadap yang lain, dan ampunilah seorang akan yang lain apabila yang seorang menaruh dendam terhadap yang lain, sama seperti Tuhan telah mengampuni kamu, kamu perbuat jugalah demikian. Dan di atas semuanya itu: kenakanlah kasih, sebagai pengikat yang mempersatukan dan menyempurnakan. Hendaklah damai sejahtera Kristus memerintah dalam hatimu, karena untuk itulah kamu telah dipanggil menjadi satu tubuh. Dan bersyukurlah. Hendaklah perkataan Kristus diam dengan segala kekayaannya di antara kamu, sehingga kamu dengan segala hikmat mengajar dan menegur seorang akan yang lain dan sambil menyanyikan mazmur, dan puji-pujian dan nyanyian rohani, kamu mengucap syukur kepada Allah di dalam hatimu. Dan segala sesuatu yang kamu lakukan dengan perkataan atau perbuatan, lakukanlah semuanya itu dalam nama Tuhan Yesus, sambil mengucap syukur oleh Dia kepada Allah, Bapa kita. Hai isteri-isteri, tunduklah kepada suamimu, sebagaimana seharusnya di dalam Tuhan. Hai suami-suami, kasihilah isterimu dan janganlah berlaku kasar terhadap dia. Hai anak-anak, taatilah orang tuamu dalam segala hal, karena itulah yang indah di dalam Tuhan. Hai bapa-bapa, janganlah sakiti hati anakmu, supaya jangan tawar hatinya.
Bacaan kedua (Ibrani 11: 8, 11–12 dan 17–19) (pilihan kedua)

Karena iman Abraham taat, ketika ia dipanggil untuk berangkat ke negeri yang akan diterimanya menjadi milik pusakanya, lalu ia berangkat dengan tidak mengetahui tempat yang ia tujui. Karena iman ia juga dan Sara beroleh kekuatan untuk menurunkan anak cucu, walaupun usianya sudah lewat, karena ia menganggap Dia, yang memberikan janji itu setia. Itulah sebabnya, maka dari satu orang, malahan orang yang telah mati pucuk, terpancar keturunan besar, seperti bintang di langit dan seperti pasir di tepi laut, yang tidak terhitung banyaknya. Karena iman maka Abraham, tatkala ia dicobai, mempersembahkan Ishak. Ia, yang telah menerima janji itu, rela mempersembahkan anaknya yang tunggal, walaupun kepadanya telah dikatakan: "Keturunan yang berasal dari Ishaklah yang akan disebut keturunanmu." Karena ia berpikir, bahwa Allah berkuasa membangkitkan orang-orang sekalipun dari antara orang mati. Dan dari sana ia seakan-akan telah menerimanya kembali.
Bacaan Injil (Lukas 2: 22–40)

Dan ketika genap waktu pentahiran, menurut hukum Taurat Musa, mereka membawa Dia ke Yerusalem untuk menyerahkan-Nya kepada Tuhan, seperti ada tertulis dalam hukum Tuhan: "Semua anak laki-laki sulung harus dikuduskan bagi Allah", dan untuk mempersembahkan korban menurut apa yang difirmankan dalam hukum Tuhan, yaitu sepasang burung tekukur atau dua ekor anak burung merpati. Adalah di Yerusalem seorang bernama Simeon. Ia seorang yang benar dan saleh yang menantikan penghiburan bagi Israel. Roh Kudus ada di atasnya, dan kepadanya telah dinyatakan oleh Roh Kudus, bahwa ia tidak akan mati sebelum ia melihat Mesias, yaitu Dia yang diurapi Tuhan. Ia datang ke Bait Allah oleh Roh Kudus. Ketika Yesus, Anak itu, dibawa masuk oleh orang tua-Nya untuk melakukan kepada-Nya apa yang ditentukan hukum Taurat, ia menyambut Anak itu dan menatang-Nya sambil memuji Allah, katanya: "Sekarang, Tuhan, biarkanlah hamba-Mu ini pergi dalam damai sejahtera, sesuai dengan firman-Mu, sebab mataku telah melihat keselamatan yang dari pada-Mu, yang telah Engkau sediakan di hadapan segala bangsa, yaitu terang yang menjadi penyataan bagi bangsa-bangsa lain dan menjadi kemuliaan bagi umat-Mu, Israel." Dan bapa serta ibu-Nya amat heran akan segala apa yang dikatakan tentang Dia. Lalu Simeon memberkati mereka dan berkata kepada Maria, ibu Anak itu: "Sesungguhnya Anak ini ditentukan untuk menjatuhkan atau membangkitkan banyak orang di Israel dan untuk menjadi suatu tanda yang menimbulkan perbantahan-- dan suatu pedang akan menembus jiwamu sendiri --, supaya menjadi nyata pikiran hati banyak orang." Lagipula di situ ada Hana, seorang nabi perempuan, anak Fanuel dari suku Asyer. Ia sudah sangat lanjut umurnya. Sesudah kawin ia hidup tujuh tahun lamanya bersama suaminya, dan sekarang ia janda dan berumur delapan puluh empat tahun. Ia tidak pernah meninggalkan Bait Allah dan siang malam beribadah dengan berpuasa dan berdoa. Dan pada ketika itu juga datanglah ia ke situ dan mengucap syukur kepada Allah dan berbicara tentang Anak itu kepada semua orang yang menantikan kelepasan untuk Yerusalem. Dan setelah selesai semua yang harus dilakukan menurut hukum Tuhan, kembalilah mereka ke kota kediamannya, yaitu kota Nazaret di Galilea. Anak itu bertambah besar dan menjadi kuat, penuh hikmat, dan kasih karunia Allah ada pada-Nya.

主は、子に対する権威を父に授け、子が母の判断に従う義務を定めておられる。父を尊べば、お前の罪は償われ、同じく、母を敬えば、富を蓄える。父を尊べば、いつの日か、子供たちがお前を幸せにしてくれる。主は、必ず祈りを聞き入れてくださる。父を敬う者は、長寿に恵まれ、主に従う者は、母を安心させる。子よ、年老いた父親の面倒を見よ。生きている間、彼を悲しませてはならない。たとえ彼の物覚えが鈍くなっても、思いやりの気持を持て。自分が活力にあふれているからといって、彼を軽蔑してはならない。主は、父親に対するお前の心遣いを忘れず、罪を取り消し、お前を更に高めてくださる。

これらのことの後で、主の言葉が幻の中でアブラムに臨んだ。「恐れるな、アブラムよ。わたしはあなたの盾である。あなたの受ける報いは非常に大きいであろう。」アブラムは尋ねた。「わが神、主よ。わたしに何をくださるというのですか。わたしには子供がありません。家を継ぐのはダマスコのエリエゼルです。」アブラムは言葉をついだ。「御覧のとおり、あなたはわたしに子孫を与えてくださいませんでしたから、家の僕が跡を継ぐことになっています。」見よ、主の言葉があった。「その者があなたの跡を継ぐのではなく、あなたから生まれる者が跡を継ぐ。」主は彼を外に連れ出して言われた。「天を仰いで、星を数えることができるなら、数えてみるがよい。」そして言われた。「あなたの子孫はこのようになる。」アブラムは主を信じた。主はそれを彼の義と認められた。主は、約束されたとおりサラを顧み、さきに語られたとおりサラのために行われたので、彼女は身ごもり、年老いたアブラハムとの間に男の子を産んだ。それは、神が約束されていた時期であった。アブラハムは、サラが産んだ自分の子をイサクと名付け。
第二読み物（コロサイの信徒第3章：第12詩–第21詩）（第一選択）

あなたがたは神に選ばれ、聖なる者とされ、愛されているのですから、憐れみの心、慈愛、謙遜、柔和、寛容を身に着けなさい。互いに忍び合い、責めるべきことがあっても、赦し合いなさい。主があなたがたを赦してくださったように、あなたがたも同じようにしなさい。これらすべてに加えて、愛を身に着けなさい。愛は、すべてを完成させるきずなです。また、キリストの平和があなたがたの心を支配するようにしなさい。この平和にあずからせるために、あなたがたは招かれて一つの体とされたのです。いつも感謝していなさい。キリストの言葉があなたがたの内に豊かに宿るようにしなさい。知恵を尽くして互いに教え、諭し合い、詩編と賛歌と霊的な歌により、感謝して心から神をほめたたえなさい。そして、何を話すにせよ、行うにせよ、すべてを主イエスの名によって行い、イエスによって、父である神に感謝しなさい。家族に対して妻たちよ、主を信じる者にふさわしく、夫に仕えなさい。夫たちよ、妻を愛しなさい。つらく当たってはならない。子供たち、どんなことについても両親に従いなさい。それは主に喜ばれることです。父親たち、子供をいらだたせてはならない。いじけるといけないからです。
第二読み物（ヘブライ人第11章：第8詩と第11詩–第12詩と第17詩–第19詩）（第二選択）
この読み物はヘブライ人への手紙です。
信仰によって、アブラハムは、自分が財産として受け継ぐことになる土地に出て行くように召し出されると、これに服従し、行き先も知らずに出発したのです。信仰によって、不妊の女サラ自身も、年齢が盛りを過ぎていたのに子をもうける力を得ました。約束をなさった方は真実な方であると、信じていたからです。それで、死んだも同様の一人の人から空の星のように、また海辺の数えきれない砂のように、多くの子孫が生まれたのです。信仰によって、アブラハムは、試練を受けたとき、イサクを献げました。つまり、約束を受けていた者が、独り子を献げようとしたのです。この独り子については、「イサクから生まれる者が、あなたの子孫と呼ばれる」と言われていました。アブラハムは、神が人を死者の中から生き返らせることもおできになると信じたのです。それで彼は、イサクを返してもらいましたが、それは死者の中から返してもらったも同然です。
福音書（ルカ第2章：第22詩–第40詩）
この読み物はルカによる福音書です。
さて、モーセの律法に定められた彼らの清めの期間が過ぎたとき、両親はその子を主に献げるため、エルサレムに連れて行った。それは主の律法に、「初めて生まれる男子は皆、主のために聖別される」と書いてあるからである。また、主の律法に言われているとおりに、山鳩一つがいか、家鳩の雛二羽をいけにえとして献げるためであった。そのとき、エルサレムにシメオンという人がいた。この人は正しい人で信仰があつく、イスラエルの慰められるのを待ち望み、聖霊が彼にとどまっていた。そして、主が遣わすメシアに会うまでは決して死なない、とのお告げを聖霊から受けていた。シメオンが“霊”に導かれて神殿の境内に入って来たとき、両親は、幼子のために律法の規定どおりにいけにえを献げようとして、イエスを連れて来た。シメオンは幼子を腕に抱き、神をたたえて言った。「主よ、今こそあなたは、お言葉どおりこの僕を安らかに去らせてくださいます。わたしはこの目であなたの救いを見たからです。これは万民のために整えてくださった救いで、異邦人を照らす啓示の光、あなたの民イスラエルの誉れです。」父と母は、幼子についてこのように言われたことに驚いていた。シメオンは彼らを祝福し、母親のマリアに言った。「御覧なさい。この子は、イスラエルの多くの人を倒したり立ち上がらせたりするためにと定められ、また、反対を受けるしるしとして定められています。――あなた自身も剣で心を刺し貫かれます――多くの人の心にある思いがあらわにされるためです。」また、アシェル族のファヌエルの娘で、アンナという女預言者がいた。非常に年をとっていて、若いとき嫁いでから七年間夫と共に暮らしたが、夫に死に別れ、八十四歳になっていた。彼女は神殿を離れず、断食したり祈ったりして、夜も昼も神に仕えていたが、そのとき、近づいて来て神を賛美し、エルサレムの救いを待ち望んでいる人々皆に幼子のことを話した。親子は主の律法で定められたことをみな終えたので、自分たちの町であるガリラヤのナザレに帰った。幼子はたくましく育ち、知恵に満ち、神の恵みに包まれていた。
