Gospel reading before the palm procession (Mark 11: 1–10) (Option 1)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.'" So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it. So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!"

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel." Jesus found an ass and sat upon it, as is written: Fear no more, O daughter Zion; see, your king comes, seated upon an ass's colt. His disciples did not understand this at first, but when Jesus had been glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done this for him.

The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
Second reading (Philippians 2: 6–11)

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were to take place in two days' time. So the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to arrest him by treachery and put him to death. They said, "Not during the festival, for fear that there may be a riot among the people." When he was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, costly genuine spikenard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head. There were some who were indignant. "Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil? It could have been sold for more than three hundred days' wages and the money given to the poor." They were infuriated with her. Jesus said, "Let her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me. The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them, but you will not always have me. She has done what she could. She has anticipated anointing my body for burial. Amen, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed to the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her." Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them. When they heard him they were pleased and promised to pay him money. Then he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there." The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, he came with the Twelve. And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one, "Surely it is not I?" He said to them, "One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish. For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born." While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will have your faith shaken, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be dispersed. But after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee." Peter said to him, "Even though all should have their faith shaken, mine will not be." Then Jesus said to him, "Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times." But he vehemently replied, "Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you." And they all spoke similarly. Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch." He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will." When he returned he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing. Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open and did not know what to answer him. He returned a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand." Then, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who had come from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying, "The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him and lead him away securely." He came and immediately went over to him and said, "Rabbi." And he kissed him. At this they laid hands on him and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew his sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear. Jesus said to them in reply, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs, to seize me? Day after day I was with you teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me; but that the Scriptures may be fulfilled." And they all left him and fled. Now a young man followed him wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body. They seized him, but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked. They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. Peter followed him at a distance into the high priest's courtyard and was seated with the guards, warming himself at the fire. The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they found none. Many gave false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. Some took the stand and testified falsely against him, alleging, "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands.'" Even so their testimony did not agree. The high priest rose before the assembly and questioned Jesus, saying, "Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?" But he was silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said to him, "Are you the Christ, the son of the Blessed One?" Then Jesus answered, "I am; and 'you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.'" At that the high priest tore his garments and said, "What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him as deserving to die. Some began to spit on him. They blindfolded him and struck him and said to him, "Prophesy!" And the guards greeted him with blows. While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's maids came along. Seeing Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and said, "You too were with the Nazarene, Jesus." But he denied it saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." So he went out into the outer court. Then the cock crowed. The maid saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them." Once again he denied it. A little later the bystanders said to Peter once more, "Surely you are one of them; for you too are a Galilean." He began to curse and to swear, "I do not know this man about whom you are talking." And immediately a cock crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times." He broke down and wept. As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so." The chief priests accused him of many things. Again Pilate questioned him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of." Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed. Now on the occasion of the feast, he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested. A man called Barabbas was then in prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion. The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed. Pilate answered, "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate again said to them in reply, "Then what do you want me to do with the man you call the king of the Jews?" They shouted again, "Crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him." So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified. The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with, “All hail, King of the Jews!" and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. They brought him to the place of Golgotha — which is translated Place of the Skull — They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it. Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take. It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews." With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left. Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself by coming down from the cross." Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him. At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "Look, he is calling Elijah." One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink saying, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down." Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joseph, and Salome. These women had followed him when he was in Galilee and ministered to him. There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died. And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph watched where he was laid.

Many people also spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread leafy branches from the fields. Then the people who walked ahead and those who followed behind Jesus began to shout, "Hosannah! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David which comes! Hosannah in the highest!"

The next day many people who had come for the festival heard that Jesus was to enter Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. And they cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!" Jesus found a donkey and sat upon it, as Scripture says: Do not fear, city of Zion, see your king is coming sitting on the colt of a donkey. The disciples were not aware of this at first, but after Jesus was glorified, they remembered and realize that this had been written of him and that they themselves had taken part in it.

Though being divine in nature, he did not claim in fact equality with God, but emptied himself, taking on the nature of a servant, made in human likeness, and in his appearance found as a man. He humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross. That is why God exalted him and gave him the Name which outshines all names, so that at the Name of Jesus all knees should bend in heaven; on earth and among the dead, and all tongues proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.

It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking craftily for a way to arrest Jesus and put him to death, for they said, "Not during the Festival, or there might be trouble among the people." Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. As he was lying down at dinner, a woman entered carrying a precious jar of expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfumed oil on Jesus' head. Then some of them became angry and said, "What a useless waste of perfume. It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor." And they criticized her. But Jesus said, "Leave her alone; why are you troubling her? What she has just done for me is a very charitable work. At any time you can help the poor, for you always have them with you, but you will not have them forever. This woman has done what was hers to do, she has anointed my body beforehand for my burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever the Good News is proclaimed, and this will be throughout the world, what she has done will be told in praise of her. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. On hearing him they were excited and promised to give him money. So Judas started planning the best way to hand Jesus over to them. On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day when the Passover Lamb was killed, the disciples asked him, "Where would you have us go to prepare the Passover meal for you?" So Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions. "Go into the city and in there, is a man who will come to you carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters and say to the owner, 'The Master says: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' Then he will show you a large room upstairs, already arranged and furnished. There you will prepare for us." The disciples went off. When they reached the city, they found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were at the table eating, Jesus stated, "Truly, I will tell you, one of you will betray me, one who shares my meal." They were deeply distressed at hearing this and ask him, one after the other, "You don't mean me, do you?" And Jesus answered, "It is one of you Twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me. The Son of Man is going as the Scriptures say he will. But alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed; better for him if he had never been born." While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take this, it is my body." Then he took the cup and after he had given thanks, passed the cup to them and they all drank from it. And he said, "This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which is to be poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not taste the fruit of the vine again until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God." After singing psalms of praise, they went out to the Hill of Olives. And Jesus stated to them, "All of you will be confused and fall away; for the Scripture says: I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered. But after I am raised up, I will go to Galilee ahead of you." Then Peter said to him, "Even though all the others fall away, I will not." And Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you, today, on this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." But Peter insisted, "Though I have to die with you, I will never deny you." And all of them stated the same. They came to a place which was called Gethsemane and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." But he took Peter, James, and John along with him, and becoming filled with fear and distress, he said to them, "My soul is full of sorrow, even to death. Remain here and stay awake." Then he went a little further on and fell to the ground, praying that if possible this hour might pass him by. Jesus said, "Abba (Daddy), all things are possible for you; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want." Then he came and found them asleep and stated to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay awake for one hour? Keep watch and pray, all of you, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit indeed is eager but human nature is weak." And going away he prayed the same words. When he came back to the disciples, he found them asleep again; they could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say to him. When he came back the third time, he stated, "You can sleep on now and take your rest. It is all over, for the time has come; the Son of Man is now given into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, the one betraying me is right here." While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders. The traitor had arranged a signal for them, "The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him and take him away under guard." So, when Jesus came, Judas went directly to him, calling, "Master! Master!" and kissed him. Then the guards seized Jesus and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the High Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. Jesus turned to them saying, "So, you have set out against a robber! Did you need swords and clubs to arrest me? Day after day I was among you teaching in the Temple and you did not arrest me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled." Then they all deserted him and fled. A young man covered by nothing but a linen cloth followed Jesus. As they took hold of him, he left the cloth in their hands and fled away naked. They led Jesus to the High Priest and all the chief priests assembled with the elders and the teachers of the Law. Peter had followed him at a distance and went right into the courtyard of the High Priest, where he sat with the guards, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they were unable to find any. Even though many came up to speak falsely against him, their evidence did not agree. At last some stood up and gave this false witness: "We heard him say: 'I will destroy this Temple made by hands and in three days I will build another not made by human hands.'" But even so, their evidence did not agree. The High Priest then stood up in the midst of them and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer at all? What of this evidence against you?" However, Jesus still stood silent and made no reply. The High Priest then asked a second question to Jesus, "Are you Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" Then Jesus answered, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Most Powerful and coming with the clouds of heaven around him." The High Priest tore his clothes to show his horror and stated, "What more evidence do we need? You have just heard his blasphemous words. What is your decision?" Everybody condemned Jesus, saying, "He must die." Some of them began to spit on Jesus, and blindfolding him, they struck him saying, "Play the prophet!" Additionally, the guards set upon him with blows. While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the High Priest's servant-girls came by. Noticing Peter beside the fire, she looked straight at him and stated, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene." But Peter denied it, "I do not know or understand what you are talking about." And he went out through the gateway. The servant-girl saw him there and told the bystanders, "This man is one of them." But Peter denied it again. After a little while those standing by stated to Peter, "Of course you are one of them; you are a Galilean, are you not?" And Peter began to justify himself with curses and oaths, "I do not know the man you are talking about." Just then a cock crowed a second time and Peter remembered what Jesus had stated to him; "Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times." Peter broke down and wept. Early in the morning, the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the Law (that is, the whole Council or Sanhedrin) had their plan ready. They put Jesus in chains, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "You say so." As the chief priests accused Jesus of many things, Pilate asked him again, "Have you no answer at all? See how many charges they bring against you." But Jesus gave no further answers, so that Pilate wondered. At every Passover festival, Pilate used to free any prisoner the people asked for. Now there was a man called Barabbas, jailed with the rioters who had committed murder in the uprising. When the crowd went up to ask Pilate the usual favor, he said to them, "Do you want me to set free the King of the Jews?" For he realized that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him out of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask instead for the release of Barabbas. Pilate replied, "And what shall I do with the man you call King of the Jews?" The crowd shouted back, "Crucify him!" Pilate asked, "What evil has he done?" However, in spite of Pilate's question they shouted louder, "Crucify him!" As Pilate wanted to please the people, he freed Barabbas and after the flogging of Jesus had him handed over to be crucified. The soldiers took him inside the courtyard known as the praetorium and called the rest of their companions. They clothed Jesus in a purple cloak and twisting a crown of thorns, they placed it on Jesus' head. Then they began saluting him, "Long life to the King of the Jews!" With a stick, they hit Jesus on the head and spat on him, and then they knelt down pretending to worship him. When they had finished mocking Jesus, they pulled off the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. The soldiers led Jesus out of the city to crucify him. On the way, they met Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, and forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. When they had led him to the place called Golgotha, which means the Skull, they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he would not take it. Then they nailed him to the cross and divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots to decide what each should take. It was about nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. The statement of his offense was displayed above his head and it read, "The King of the Jews." They also crucified two robbers with him, one on Jesus' right and one on his left. Jesus was in the center. People passing by laughed at him, shook their head and jeered, "Aha! So you are able to tear down the Temple and build it up again in three days. Now save yourself and come down from the cross!" In the same way, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law teased Jesus, saying to one another, "The man who saved others cannot save himself. Let's see the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from his cross. Then we will believe in him." Even the men who were crucified with Jesus insulted him. When noon came, darkness fell over the whole land and lasted until three o'clock; and at three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice. "Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?" which is translated as, "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?" As soon as the people heard these words, some of the bystanders stated, "Listen! He is calling for Elijah." And one of them went quickly to fill a sponge with bitter wine and putting it on a reed, gave him to drink saying, "Now let's see whether Elijah comes to bring him down." But Jesus gave a loud shriek and gave up his spirit. Immediately, the drapes that enclosed the Temple sanctuary were torn in two from top to bottom. The captain who was standing in front of Jesus saw how he died and heard the cry he gave; and he stated, "Truly, this man was the Son of God." When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem and arrived at Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions, "Go to the village on the other side and, as you enter it, you will find there a colt tied up that no one has ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you: 'What are you doing?' give this answer: 'The Lord needs it, but he will send it back immediately.'" They went off and found the colt out in the street tied at the door. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders asked, "Why are you untying that colt?" They answered as Jesus had told them, and the people allowed them to continue. They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks on its back, and Jesus sat upon it. Many people also spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread leafy branches from the fields. Then the people who walked ahead and those who followed behind Jesus began to shout, "Hosannah! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David which comes! Hosannah in the highest!"

The next day many people who had come for the festival heard that Jesus was to enter Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. And they cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!" Jesus found a donkey and sat upon it, as Scripture says: Do not fear, city of Zion, see your king is coming sitting on the colt of a donkey. The disciples were not aware of this at first, but after Jesus was glorified, they remembered and realize that this had been written of him and that they themselves had taken part in it.

Though being divine in nature, he did not claim in fact equality with God, but emptied himself, taking on the nature of a servant, made in human likeness, and in his appearance found as a man. That is why God exalted him and gave him the Name which outshines all names, so that at the Name of Jesus all knees should bend in heaven; on earth and among the dead, and all tongues proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.

The chief priests and the teachers of the Law were looking craftily for a way to arrest Jesus and put him to death, for they said, "Not during the Festival, or there might be trouble among the people." Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. As he was lying down at dinner, a woman entered carrying a precious jar of expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfumed oil on Jesus' head. Then some of them became angry and said, "What a useless waste of perfume. It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor." And they criticized her. But Jesus said, "Leave her alone; why are you troubling her? What she has just done for me is a very charitable work. At any time you can help the poor, for you always have them with you, but you will not have them forever. This woman has done what was hers to do, she has anointed my body beforehand for my burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever the Good News is proclaimed, and this will be throughout the world, what she has done will be told in praise of her. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. On hearing him they were excited and promised to give him money. So Judas started planning the best way to hand Jesus over to them. On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day when the Passover Lamb was killed, the disciples asked him, "Where would you have us go to prepare the Passover meal for you?" So Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions. "Go into the city and in there, is a man who will come to you carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters and say to the owner, 'The Master says: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' Then he will show you a large room upstairs, already arranged and furnished. There you will prepare for us." The disciples went off. When they reached the city, they found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were at the table eating, Jesus stated, "Truly, I will tell you, one of you will betray me, one who shares my meal." They were deeply distressed at hearing this and ask him, one after the other, "You don't mean me, do you?" And Jesus answered, "It is one of you Twelve, one who dips his bread in the dish with me. The Son of Man is going as the Scriptures say he will. But alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed; better for him if he had never been born." While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take this, it is my body." Then he took the cup and after he had given thanks, passed the cup to them and they all drank from it. And he said, "This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which is to be poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not taste the fruit of the vine again until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God." After singing psalms of praise, they went out to the Hill of Olives. And Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you, today, on this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." But Peter insisted, "Though I have to die with you, I will never deny you." And all of them stated the same. They came to a place which was called Gethsemane and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." But he took Peter, James, and John along with him, and becoming filled with fear and distress, he said to them, "My soul is full of sorrow, even to death. Remain here and stay awake." Then he went a little further on and fell to the ground, praying that if possible this hour might pass him by. Jesus said, "Abba (Daddy), all things are possible for you; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want." Then he came and found them asleep and stated to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay awake for one hour? Keep watch and pray, all of you, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit indeed is eager but human nature is weak." And going away he prayed the same words. When he came back to the disciples, he found them asleep again; they could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say to him. When he came back the third time, he stated, "You can sleep on now and take your rest. It is all over, for the time has come; the Son of Man is now given into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, the one betraying me is right here." While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders. The traitor had arranged a signal for them, "The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him and take him away under guard." So, when Jesus came, Judas went directly to him, calling, "Master! Master!" and kissed him. Then the guards seized Jesus and arrested him. One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the High Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. Jesus turned to them saying, "So, you have set out against a robber! Did you need swords and clubs to arrest me? Day after day I was among you teaching in the Temple and you did not arrest me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled." Then they all deserted him and fled. A young man covered by nothing but a linen cloth followed Jesus. As they took hold of him, he left the cloth in their hands and fled away naked. They led Jesus to the High Priest and all the chief priests assembled with the elders and the teachers of the Law. Peter had followed him at a distance and went right into the courtyard of the High Priest, where he sat with the guards, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some evidence against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they were unable to find any. Even though many came up to speak falsely against him, their evidence did not agree. At last some stood up and gave this false witness: "We heard him say: 'I will destroy this Temple made by hands and in three days I will build another not made by human hands.'" But even so, their evidence did not agree. The High Priest then stood up in the midst of them and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer at all? What of this evidence against you?" However, Jesus still stood silent and made no reply. The High Priest then asked a second question to Jesus, "Are you Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" Then Jesus answered, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Most Powerful and coming with the clouds of heaven around him." The High Priest tore his clothes to show his horror and stated, "What more evidence do we need? You have just heard his blasphemous words. What is your decision?" Everybody condemned Jesus, saying, "He must die." Some of them began to spit on Jesus, and blindfolding him, they struck him saying, "Play the prophet!" Additionally, the guards set upon him with blows. While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the High Priest's servant-girls came by. Noticing Peter beside the fire, she looked straight at him and stated, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene." But Peter denied it, "I do not know or understand what you are talking about." And he went out through the gateway. The servant-girl saw him there and told the bystanders, "This man is one of them." But Peter denied it again. After a little while those standing by stated to Peter, "Of course you are one of them; you are a Galilean, are you not?" And Peter began to justify himself with curses and oaths, "I do not know the man you are talking about." Just then a cock crowed a second time and Peter remembered what Jesus had stated to him; "Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times." Peter broke down and wept. Early in the morning, the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the Law (that is, the whole Council or Sanhedrin) had their plan ready. They put Jesus in chains, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "You say so." As the chief priests accused Jesus of many things, Pilate asked him again, "Have you no answer at all? See how many charges they bring against you." But Jesus gave no further answers, so that Pilate wondered. At every Passover festival, Pilate used to free any prisoner the people asked for. Now there was a man called Barabbas, jailed with the rioters who had committed murder in the uprising. When the crowd went up to ask Pilate the usual favor, he said to them, "Do you want me to set free the King of the Jews?" For he realized that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him out of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask instead for the release of Barabbas. Pilate replied, "And what shall I do with the man you call King of the Jews?" The crowd shouted back, "Crucify him!" Pilate asked, "What evil has he done?" However, in spite of Pilate's question they shouted louder, "Crucify him!" As Pilate wanted to please the people, he freed Barabbas and after the flogging of Jesus had him handed over to be crucified. The soldiers took him inside the courtyard known as the praetorium and called the rest of their companions. They clothed Jesus in a purple cloak and twisting a crown of thorns, they placed it on Jesus' head. Then they began saluting him, "Long life to the King of the Jews!" With a stick, they hit Jesus on the head and spat on him, and then they knelt down pretending to worship him. When they had finished mocking Jesus, they pulled off the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. The soldiers led Jesus out of the city to crucify him. On the way, they met Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, and forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. When they had led him to the place called Golgotha, which means the Skull, they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he would not take it. Then they nailed him to the cross and divided his clothes among themselves, casting lots to decide what each should take. It was about nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. The statement of his offense was displayed above his head and it read, "The King of the Jews." They also crucified two robbers with him, one on Jesus' right and one on his left. Jesus was in the center. People passing by laughed at him, shook their head and jeered, "Aha! So you are able to tear down the Temple and build it up again in three days. Now save yourself and come down from the cross!" In the same way, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law teased Jesus, saying to one another, "The man who saved others cannot save himself. Let's see the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from his cross. Then we will believe in him." Even the men who were crucified with Jesus insulted him. When noon came, darkness fell over the whole land and lasted until three o'clock; and at three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice. "Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?" which is translated as, "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?" As soon as the people heard these words, some of the bystanders stated, "Listen! He is calling for Elijah." And one of them went quickly to fill a sponge with bitter wine and putting it on a reed, gave him to drink saying, "Now let's see whether Elijah comes to bring him down." Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), since the beginning of Lent until now we have prepared our hearts by penance and charitable works. Today we gather together to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebration of our Lord's Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of his Passion and Resurrection. For it was to accomplish this mystery that he entered his own city of Jerusalem. Therefore, with all faith and devotion, let us commemorate the Lord's entry into the city for our salvation, following in his footsteps, so that being made by his grace partakers of the Cross, we may have a share also in his resurrection and in his life.

Y mientras estaba sentado a la mesa, llegó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro lleno de un rico perfume de nardo puro, de mucho valor. Rompió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús. Algunos de los presentes, indignados, se decían unos a otros: “¿Por qué se desperdicia este perfume? Podía haberse vendido por más de trescientos denarios, para ayudar a los pobres.” Y criticaban a la mujer. Pero Jesús dijo: “Déjenla en paz. ¿Por qué la molestan? Lo que ha hecho conmigo es bueno, pues a los pobres siempre los tendrán entre ustedes y podrán hacerles bien cuando quieran, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán. Esta mujer ha hecho lo que ha podido: ha perfumado de antemano mi cuerpo para mi entierro. Más le valdría no haber nacido.” Mientras cenaban, Jesús tomó en sus manos el pan, y habiendo dado gracias a Dios lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciendo: “Tomen, esto es mi cuerpo.” Luego tomó en sus manos una copa, y habiendo dado gracias a Dios se la pasó a ellos, y todos bebieron. Les dijo: “Esto es mi sangre, con la que se confirma el pacto, la cual es derramada en favor de muchos. Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta el día en que beba vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.” Después de cantar los salmos, se fueron al monte de los Olivos. Jesús les dijo: “Todos vais a perder su confianza en mí. Así lo dicen las Escrituras: ‘Mataré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas.’ Pero cuando resucite, iré a Galilea antes que ustedes.” Pedro le dijo: “Aunque todos pierdan su confianza, yo no.” Jesús le contestó: “Te aseguro que esta misma noche, antes que cante el gallo por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces. Pero él insistía: “Aunque tenga que morir contigo no te negaré. Y todos decían lo mismo.” Luego fueron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní. Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Siéntense aquí mientras yo voy a orar.”
Se llevó a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y comenzó a sentirse muy afligido y angustiado. Les dijo: “Siento en mi alma una tristeza de muerte. Quédense aquí y permanezcan despiertos. Adelantándose unos pasos, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y pidió a Dios que, a ser posible, no le llegara aquel momento de dolor. En su oración decía: “Padre mío, para ti todo es posible: líbrame de esta copa amarga, pero no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.” Luego volvió a donde ellos estaban y los encontró dormidos. Dijo a Pedro: “Simón, ¿estás durmiendo? ¿Ni una hora siquiera has podido permanecer despierto? Permanezcan despiertos y oren para no caer en tentación. Ustedes tienen buena voluntad, pero su cuerpo es débil. Se fue otra vez, y oró repitiendo las mismas palabras. Cuando volvió, encontró de nuevo dormidos a los discípulos, porque los ojos se les cerraban de sueño. Y no sabían qué contestarle. Volvió por tercera vez y les dijo: “¿Siguen durmiendo y descansando? ¡Basta ya! Ha llegado la hora en que el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores. Levántense, vámonos: ya se acerca el que me traiciona.” Todavía estaba hablando Jesús, cuando Judas, uno de los doce discípulos, llegó acompañado de mucha gente armada con espadas y palos. Iban enviados por los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los ancianos. Judas, el traidor, les había dado una contraseña, diciéndoles: “Aquel a quien yo bese, ese es. Apresadlo y llevadlo bien sujeto.” Así que se acercó a Jesús y le dijo: “¡Maestro!” Y le besó. Entonces echaron mano a Jesús y lo apresaron. Pero uno de los que estaban allí sacó su espada y cortó una oreja al criado del sumo sacerdote. Jesús preguntó a la gente: “¿Por qué vienen con espadas y palos a apresarme, como si fuera un bandido? Todos los días he estado entre ustedes enseñando en el templo y nunca me apresasen. Pero esto sucede para que se cumplan las Escrituras.” Todos los discípulos abandonaron a Jesús y huyeron. Pero un joven le seguía, cubierto solo con una sábana. A este lo atraparon, pero él, soltando la sábana, escapó desnudo. Condujeron entonces a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote, y se juntaron todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, los ancianos y los maestros de la ley. Pedro, que le había seguido de lejos hasta el interior del patio de la casa del sumo sacerdote, se quedó sentado con los guardias del templo, calentándose junto al fuego. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y toda la Junta Suprema andaban buscando alguna prueba para condenar a muerte a Jesús, pero no la encontraban. Porque, aunque muchos presentaban falsos testimonios contra él, se contradecían unos a otros. Algunos se levantaron y le acusaron falsamente diciendo: “Nosotros le hemos oído decir: ‘Yo voy a destruir este templo construido por los hombres, y en tres días levantaré otro no construido por los hombres.’ Pero ni aun así estaban de acuerdo en lo que decían. Entonces el sumo sacerdote se levantó en medio de todos y preguntó a Jesús: “¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué es esto que están diciendo contra ti?” Pero Jesús permaneció callado, sin responder nada. El sumo sacerdote volvió a preguntarle: “¿Eres tú el Mesías, el Hijo del Dios bendito?” Jesús le dijo: “Sí, yo soy. Y verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.” Entonces el sumo sacerdote se rasgó las ropas en señal de indignación y dijo: “¿Qué necesidad tenemos de más testigos? Ustedes le han oído decir palabras ofensivas contra Dios. ¿Qué les parece?” Todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que era culpable y debía morir. Algunos se pusieron a escupirle y, tapándole los ojos y golpeándole, le decían: “¡Adivina quién te ha pegado!” También los guardias del templo le daban bofetadas. Pedro estaba abajo, en el patio. En esto llegó una de las sirvientas del sumo sacerdote, la cual, al ver a Pedro calentándose junto al fuego, se quedó mirándole y le dijo: “Tú también andabas con Jesús, el de Nazaret. Pedro lo negó, diciendo: “No le conozco ni sé de qué estás hablando.” Y salió fuera, a la entrada. Entonces cantó un gallo.

Y rompió a llorar. Muy temprano, los jefes de los sacerdotes se reunieron con los ancianos, los maestros de la ley y toda la Junta Suprema. Condujeron a Jesús atado y lo entregaron a Pilato. Pilato le preguntó: “¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?” “Tú lo dices,” contestó Jesús. Como los jefes de los sacerdotes le acusaban de muchas cosas, Pilato volvió a preguntarle: “¿No respondes nada? Mira de cuántas cosas te están acusando.” Pero Jesús no le contestó, de manera que Pilato se quedó muy extrañado. Durante la fiesta, Pilato ponía en libertad a un preso, el que la gente pedía. Uno llamado Barrabás estaba entonces en la cárcel, junto con otros que habían cometido un asesinato en una revuelta. La gente llegó y empezó a pedirle a Pilato que hiciera lo que tenía por costumbre. Pilato les contestó: “¿Quieren que les ponga en libertad al Rey de los judíos?” Porque comprendía que los jefes de los sacerdotes lo habían entregado por envidia. Pero los jefes de los sacerdotes alborotaron a la gente para que pidiesen la libertad de Barrabás. Pilato les preguntó: “¿Y qué quieren que haga con el que llaman el Rey de los judíos?” “¡Crucifícalo!” contestaron a gritos. Pilato les dijo: “Pues ¿qué mal ha hecho?” Pero ellos volvieron a gritar: “¡Crucifícalo!” Entonces Pilato, como quería quedar bien con la gente, puso en libertad a Barrabás; y después de mandar que azotasen a Jesús, lo entregó para que lo crucificaran. Los soldados llevaron a Jesús al patio del palacio, llamado pretorio, y reunieron a toda la tropa. Le pusieron una capa de color rojo oscuro, y en la cabeza una corona hecha de espinas. Luego comenzaron a gritar: “¡Viva el Rey de los judíos!” Y le golpeaban la cabeza con una vara, le escupían y, doblando la rodilla, le hacían reverencias. Después de burlarse así de él, le quitaron la capa de color rojo oscuro, le pusieron su propia ropa y lo sacaron para crucificarlo. Un hombre de Cirene, llamado Simón, padre de Alejandro y Rufo, llegaba entonces del campo. Al pasar por allí le obligaron a cargar con la cruz de Jesús. Llevaron a Jesús a un sitio llamado Gólgota (que significa “Lugar de la Calavera”), le dieron vino mezclado con mirra; pero Jesús no lo aceptó. Entonces lo crucificaron. Y los soldados echaron suertes para repartirse la ropa de Jesús y ver qué tocaba a cada uno. Eran las nueve de la mañanas cuando lo crucificaron. Y pusieron un letrero en el que estaba escrita la causa de su condena: “El Rey de los judíos.” Con él crucificaron también a dos bandidos, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. Los que pasaban le insultaban meneando la cabeza y diciendo: “¡Eh, tú, que derribas el templo y en tres días lo vuelves a levantar, sálvate a ti mismo bajando de la cruz!” Del mismo modo se burlaban de él los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley. Decían: “Salvó a otros, pero él no se puede salvar. ¡Que baje de la cruz ese Mesías, Rey de Israel, para que veamos y creamos!” Y hasta los que estaban crucificados con él le insultaban. Al llegar el mediodía, toda aquella tierra quedó en oscuridad hasta las tres de la tarde. A esa misma hora, Jesús gritó con fuerza: “Eloí, Eloí, ¿lemá sabactani?” (que significa “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?”). Algunos de los que allí se encontraban lo oyeron y dijeron: “Escuchen, está llamando al profeta Elías.”

Y el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo. El centurión, que estaba frente a Jesús, al ver que había muerto, dijo: “¡Verdaderamente este hombre era Hijo de Dios!” También había algunas mujeres mirando de lejos. Entre ellas se encontraban María Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago el menor y de José, y Salomé. Estas mujeres habían seguido a Jesús y le habían ayudado cuando estaba en Galilea. También se encontraban allí muchas otras que habían ido con él a Jerusalén. Cuando anochecía el día de la preparación, es decir, la víspera del sábado, José, natural de Arimatea y miembro importante de la Junta Suprema, el cual también esperaba el reino de Dios, se dirigió con decisión a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Pilato, sorprendido de que ya hubiera muerto, llamó al centurión para preguntarle cuánto hacía que había muerto. Cuando el centurión le hubo informado, Pilato entregó el cuerpo a José. Entonces José bajó el cuerpo y lo envolvió en una sábana de lino que había comprado. Luego lo puso en un sepulcro excavado en la roca, y tapó con una piedra la entrada del sepulcro. María Magdalena y María la madre de José miraban dónde lo ponían.

Al día siguiente, la gran multitud que había venido para la fiesta, se enteró de que Jesús se dirigía a Jerusalén. Y, tomando hojas de palmera, salieron a su encuentro y lo aclamaban diciendo: "¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor, el rey de Israel!" Al encontrar un asno, Jesús montó sobre él, conforme a lo que está escrito: "No temas, hija de Sion; ya viene tu rey, montado sobre la cría de una asna." Al comienzo, sus discípulos no comprendieron esto. Pero cuando Jesús fue glorificado, recordaron que todo lo que le había sucedido era lo que estaba escrito acerca de él.

Pada waktu kamu masuk di situ, kamu akan segera menemukan seekor keledai muda tertambat, yang belum pernah ditunggangi orang. Lepaskan keledai itu dan bawalah ke mari. Dan jika ada orang mengatakan kepadamu: Mengapa kamu lakukan itu, jawablah: Tuhan memerlukannya. Ia akan segera mengembalikannya ke sini." Merekapun pergi, dan menemukan seekor keledai muda tertambat di depan pintu di luar, di pinggir jalan, lalu melepaskannya. Dan beberapa orang yang ada di situ berkata kepada mereka: "Apa maksudnya kamu melepaskan keledai itu?" Lalu mereka menjawab seperti yang sudah dikatakan Yesus. Maka orang-orang itu membiarkan mereka. Lalu mereka membawa keledai itu kepada Yesus, dan mengalasinya dengan pakaian mereka, kemudian Yesus naik ke atasnya. Banyak orang yang menghamparkan pakaiannya di jalan, ada pula yang menyebarkan ranting-ranting hijau yang mereka ambil dari ladang. Orang-orang yang berjalan di depan dan mereka yang mengikuti dari belakang berseru: "Hosana! Diberkatilah Dia yang datang dalam nama Tuhan, diberkatilah Kerajaan yang datang, Kerajaan bapak kita Daud, hosana di tempat yang maha tinggi!"

Tuhan ALLAH telah memberikan kepadaku lidah seorang murid, supaya dengan perkataan aku dapat memberi semangat baru kepada orang yang letih lesu. Setiap pagi Ia mempertajam pendengaranku untuk mendengar seperti seorang murid. Tuhan ALLAH telah membuka telingaku, dan aku tidak memberontak, tidak berpaling ke belakang. Aku memberi punggungku kepada orang-orang yang memukul aku, dan pipiku kepada orang-orang yang mencabut janggutku. Aku tidak menyembunyikan mukaku ketika aku dinodai dan diludahi. Tetapi Tuhan ALLAH menolong aku; sebab itu aku tidak mendapat noda. Sebab itu aku meneguhkan hatiku seperti keteguhan gunung batu karena aku tahu, bahwa aku tidak akan mendapat malu.

Bacaan Kedua (Filipi 2: 6–11)

Walaupun dalam rupa Allah, tidak menganggap kesetaraan dengan Allah itu sebagai milik yang harus dipertahankan, melainkan telah mengosongkan diri-Nya sendiri, dan mengambil rupa seorang hamba, dan menjadi sama dengan manusia. Dan dalam keadaan sebagai manusia, Ia telah merendahkan diri-Nya dan taat sampai mati, bahkan sampai mati di kayu salib. Itulah sebabnya Allah sangat meninggikan Dia dan mengaruniakan kepada-Nya nama di atas segala nama, supaya dalam nama Yesus bertekuk lutut segala yang ada di langit dan yang ada di atas bumi dan yang ada di bawah bumi, dan segala lidah mengaku: "Yesus Kristus adalah Tuhan," bagi kemuliaan Allah, Bapa!

Hari raya Paskah dan hari raya Roti Tidak Beragi akan mulai dua hari lagi. Imam-imam kepala dan ahli-ahli Taurat mencari jalan untuk menangkap dan membunuh Yesus dengan tipu muslihat, sebab mereka berkata: "Jangan pada waktu perayaan, supaya jangan timbul keributan di antara rakyat." Ketika Yesus berada di Betania, di rumah Simon si kusta, dan sedang duduk makan, datanglah seorang perempuan membawa suatu buli-buli pualam berisi minyak narwastu murni yang mahal harganya. Setelah dipecahkannya leher buli-buli itu, dicurahkannya minyak itu ke atas kepala Yesus. Ada orang yang menjadi gusar dan berkata seorang kepada yang lain: "Untuk apa pemborosan minyak narwastu ini? Sebab minyak ini dapat dijual tiga ratus dinar lebih dan uangnya dapat diberikan kepada orang-orang miskin." Lalu mereka memarahi perempuan itu. Tetapi Yesus berkata: "Biarkanlah dia. Mengapa kamu menyusahkan dia? Ia telah melakukan suatu perbuatan yang baik pada-Ku. Karena orang-orang miskin selalu ada padamu, dan kamu dapat menolong mereka, bilamana kamu menghendakinya, tetapi Aku tidak akan selalu bersama-sama kamu. Ia telah melakukan apa yang dapat dilakukannya. Tubuh-Ku telah diminyakinya sebagai persiapan untuk penguburan-Ku. Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya di mana saja Injil diberitakan di seluruh dunia, apa yang dilakukannya ini akan disebut juga untuk mengingat dia." Lalu pergilah Yudas Iskariot, salah seorang dari kedua belas murid itu, kepada imam-imam kepala dengan maksud untuk menyerahkan Yesus kepada mereka. Mereka sangat gembira waktu mendengarnya dan mereka berjanji akan memberikan uang kepadanya. Kemudian ia mencari kesempatan yang baik untuk menyerahkan Yesus. Pada hari pertama dari hari raya Roti Tidak Beragi, pada waktu orang menyembelih domba Paskah, murid-murid Yesus berkata kepada-Nya: "Ke tempat mana Engkau kehendaki kami pergi untuk mempersiapkan perjamuan Paskah bagi-Mu?" Lalu Ia menyuruh dua orang murid-Nya dengan pesan: "Pergilah ke kota; di sana kamu akan bertemu dengan seorang yang membawa kendi berisi air. Ikutilah dia dan katakanlah kepada pemilik rumah yang dimasukinya: Pesan Guru: di manakah ruangan yang disediakan bagi-Ku untuk makan Paskah bersama-sama dengan murid-murid-Ku? Lalu orang itu akan menunjukkan kamu sebuah ruangan atas yang besar, yang sudah lengkap dan tersedia. Di situlah kamu harus mempersiapkan perjamuan Paskah untuk kita!" Maka berangkatlah kedua murid itu dan setibanya di kota, didapati mereka semua seperti yang dikatakan Yesus kepada mereka. Lalu mereka mempersiapkan Paskah. Setelah hari malam, datanglah Yesus bersama-sama dengan kedua belas murid itu. Ketika mereka duduk di situ dan sedang makan, Yesus berkata: "Aku berkata kepadamu, sesungguhnya seorang di antara kamu akan menyerahkan Aku, yaitu dia yang makan dengan Aku." Maka sedihlah hati mereka dan seorang demi seorang berkata kepada-Nya: "Bukan aku, ya Tuhan?" Ia menjawab: "Orang itu ialah salah seorang dari kamu yang dua belas ini, dia yang mencelupkan roti ke dalam satu pinggan dengan Aku. Anak Manusia memang akan pergi sesuai dengan yang ada tertulis tentang Dia, akan tetapi celakalah orang yang olehnya Anak Manusia itu diserahkan. Adalah lebih baik bagi orang itu sekiranya ia tidak dilahirkan." Dan ketika Yesus dan murid-murid-Nya sedang makan, Yesus mengambil roti, mengucap berkat, memecah-mecahkannya lalu memberikannya kepada mereka dan berkata: "Ambillah, inilah tubuh-Ku." Sesudah itu Ia mengambil cawan, mengucap syukur lalu memberikannya kepada mereka, dan mereka semuanya minum dari cawan itu. Dan Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Inilah darah-Ku, darah perjanjian, yang ditumpahkan bagi banyak orang. Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya Aku tidak akan minum lagi hasil pokok anggur sampai pada hari Aku meminumnya, yaitu yang baru, dalam Kerajaan Allah." Sesudah mereka menyanyikan nyanyian pujian, pergilah mereka ke Bukit Zaitun.
Lalu Yesus berkata kepada mereka: "Kamu semua akan tergoncang imanmu. Sebab ada tertulis: Aku akan memukul gembala dan domba-domba itu akan tercerai-berai. Akan tetapi sesudah Aku bangkit, Aku akan mendahului kamu ke Galilea." Kata Petrus kepada-Nya: "Biarpun mereka semua tergoncang imannya, aku tidak." Lalu kata Yesus kepadanya: "Aku berkata kepadamu, sesungguhnya pada hari ini, malam ini juga, sebelum ayam berkokok dua kali, engkau telah menyangkal Aku tiga kali." Tetapi dengan lebih bersungguh-sungguh Petrus berkata: "Sekalipun aku harus mati bersama-sama Engkau, aku takkan menyangkal Engkau." Semua yang lainpun berkata demikian juga. Lalu sampailah Yesus dan murid-murid-Nya ke suatu tempat yang bernama Getsemani. Kata Yesus kepada murid-murid-Nya: "Duduklah di sini, sementara Aku berdoa." Dan Ia membawa Petrus, Yakobus dan Yohanes serta-Nya. Ia sangat takut dan gentar, lalu kata-Nya kepada mereka: "Hati-Ku sangat sedih, seperti mau mati rasanya. Tinggallah di sini dan berjaga-jagalah." Ia maju sedikit, merebahkan diri ke tanah dan berdoa supaya, sekiranya mungkin, saat itu lalu dari pada-Nya. Kata-Nya: "Ya Abba, ya Bapa, tidak ada yang mustahil bagi-Mu, ambillah cawan ini dari pada-Ku, tetapi janganlah apa yang Aku kehendaki, melainkan apa yang Engkau kehendaki." Setelah itu Ia datang kembali, dan mendapati ketiganya sedang tidur. Dan Ia berkata kepada Petrus: "Simon, sedang tidurkah engkau? Tidakkah engkau sanggup berjaga-jaga satu jam? Berjaga-jagalah dan berdoalah, supaya kamu jangan jatuh ke dalam pencobaan; roh memang penurut, tetapi daging lemah." Lalu Ia pergi lagi dan mengucapkan doa yang itu juga. Dan ketika Ia kembali pula, Ia mendapati mereka sedang tidur, sebab mata mereka sudah berat dan mereka tidak tahu jawab apa yang harus mereka berikan kepada-Nya. Kemudian Ia kembali untuk ketiga kalinya dan berkata kepada mereka: "Tidurlah sekarang dan istirahatlah. Cukuplah. Saatnya sudah tiba, lihat, Anak Manusia diserahkan ke tangan orang-orang berdosa. Bangunlah, marilah kita pergi. Dia yang menyerahkan Aku sudah dekat." Waktu Yesus masih berbicara, muncullah Yudas, salah seorang dari kedua belas murid itu, dan bersama-sama dia serombongan orang yang membawa pedang dan pentung, disuruh oleh imam-imam kepala, ahli-ahli Taurat dan tua-tua. Orang yang menyerahkan Dia telah memberitahukan tanda ini kepada mereka: "Orang yang akan kucium, itulah Dia, tangkaplah Dia dan bawalah Dia dengan selamat." Dan ketika ia sampai di situ ia segera maju mendapatkan Yesus dan berkata: "Rabi," lalu mencium Dia. Maka mereka memegang Yesus dan menangkap-Nya. Salah seorang dari mereka yang ada di situ menghunus pedangnya, lalu menetakkannya kepada hamba Imam Besar sehingga putus telinganya. Kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Sangkamu Aku ini penyamun, maka kamu datang lengkap dengan pedang dan pentung untuk menangkap Aku? Padahal tiap-tiap hari Aku ada di tengah-tengah kamu mengajar di Bait Allah, dan kamu tidak menangkap Aku. Tetapi haruslah digenapi yang tertulis dalam Kitab Suci."
DeleteLalu semua murid itu meninggalkan Dia dan melarikan diri. Ada seorang muda, yang pada waktu itu hanya memakai sehelai kain lenan untuk menutup badannya, mengikuti Dia. Mereka hendak menangkapnya, tetapi ia melepaskan kainnya dan lari dengan telanjang. Kemudian Yesus dibawa menghadap Imam Besar. Lalu semua imam kepala, tua-tua dan ahli Taurat berkumpul di situ. Dan Petrus mengikuti Dia dari jauh, sampai ke dalam halaman Imam Besar, dan di sana ia duduk di antara pengawal-pengawal sambil berdiang dekat api. Imam-imam kepala, malah seluruh Mahkamah Agama mencari kesaksian terhadap Yesus supaya Ia dapat dihukum mati, tetapi mereka tidak memperolehnya. Banyak juga orang yang mengucapkan kesaksian palsu terhadap Dia, tetapi kesaksian-kesaksian itu tidak sesuai yang satu dengan yang lain. Lalu beberapa orang naik saksi melawan Dia dengan tuduhan palsu ini: "Kami sudah mendengar orang ini berkata: Aku akan merubuhkan Bait Suci buatan tangan manusia ini dan dalam tiga hari akan Kudirikan yang lain, yang bukan buatan tangan manusia." Dalam hal inipun kesaksian mereka tidak sesuai yang satu dengan yang lain. Maka Imam Besar bangkit berdiri di tengah-tengah sidang dan bertanya kepada Yesus, katanya: "Tidakkah Engkau memberi jawab atas tuduhan-tuduhan saksi-saksi ini terhadap Engkau?" Tetapi Ia tetap diam dan tidak menjawab apa-apa. Imam Besar itu bertanya kepada-Nya sekali lagi, katanya: "Apakah Engkau Mesias, Anak dari Yang Terpuji?" Jawab Yesus: "Akulah Dia, dan kamu akan melihat Anak Manusia duduk di sebelah kanan Yang Mahakuasa dan datang di tengah-tengah awan-awan di langit." Maka Imam Besar itu mengoyakkan pakaiannya dan berkata: "Untuk apa kita perlu saksi lagi? Kamu sudah mendengar hujat-Nya terhadap Allah. Bagaimana pendapat kamu?" Lalu dengan suara bulat mereka memutuskan, bahwa Dia harus dihukum mati. Lalu mulailah beberapa orang meludahi Dia dan menutupi muka-Nya dan meninju-Nya sambil berkata kepada-Nya: "Hai nabi, cobalah terka!" Malah para pengawalpun memukul Dia. Pada waktu itu Petrus masih ada di bawah, di halaman. Lalu datanglah seorang hamba perempuan Imam Besar, dan ketika perempuan itu melihat Petrus sedang berdiang, ia menatap mukanya dan berkata: "Engkau juga selalu bersama-sama dengan Yesus, orang Nazaret itu." Tetapi ia menyangkalnya dan berkata: "Aku tidak tahu dan tidak mengerti apa yang engkau maksud." Lalu ia pergi ke serambi muka (dan berkokoklah ayam). Ketika hamba perempuan itu melihat Petrus lagi, berkatalah ia pula kepada orang-orang yang ada di situ: "Orang ini adalah salah seorang dari mereka." Tetapi Petrus menyangkalnya pula. Tidak lama kemudian orang-orang yang ada di situ berkata juga kepada Petrus: "Engkau ini pasti salah seorang dari mereka, apalagi engkau seorang Galilea!" Maka mulailah Petrus mengutuk dan bersumpah: "Aku tidak kenal orang yang kamu sebut-sebut ini!" Dan pada saat itu berkokoklah ayam untuk kedua kalinya. Maka teringatlah Petrus, bahwa Yesus telah berkata kepadanya: "Sebelum ayam berkokok dua kali, engkau telah menyangkal Aku tiga kali." Lalu menangislah ia tersedu-sedu. Pagi-pagi benar imam-imam kepala bersama tua-tua dan ahli-ahli Taurat dan seluruh Mahkamah Agama sudah bulat mupakatnya. Mereka membelenggu Yesus lalu membawa-Nya dan menyerahkan-Nya kepada Pilatus. Pilatus bertanya kepada-Nya: "Engkaukah raja orang Yahudi?" Jawab Yesus: "Engkau sendiri mengatakannya." Lalu imam-imam kepala mengajukan banyak tuduhan terhadap Dia. Pilatus bertanya pula kepada-Nya, katanya: "Tidakkah Engkau memberi jawab? Lihatlah betapa banyaknya tuduhan mereka terhadap Engkau!"

Mendengar itu, beberapa orang yang berdiri di situ berkata: "Lihat, Ia memanggil Elia." Maka datanglah seorang dengan bunga karang, mencelupkannya ke dalam anggur asam lalu mencucukkannya pada sebatang buluh dan memberi Yesus minum serta berkata: "Baiklah kita tunggu dan melihat apakah Elia datang untuk menurunkan Dia." Lalu berserulah Yesus dengan suara nyaring dan menyerahkan nyawa-Nya. Ketika itu tabir Bait Suci terbelah dua dari atas sampai ke bawah. Waktu kepala pasukan yang berdiri berhadapan dengan Dia melihat mati-Nya demikian, berkatalah ia: "Sungguh, orang ini adalah Anak Allah!" Ada juga beberapa perempuan yang melihat dari jauh, di antaranya Maria Magdalena, Maria ibu Yakobus Muda dan Yoses, serta Salome. Mereka semuanya telah mengikut Yesus dan melayani-Nya waktu Ia di Galilea. Dan ada juga di situ banyak perempuan lain yang telah datang ke Yerusalem bersama-sama dengan Yesus. Sementara itu hari mulai malam, dan hari itu adalah hari persiapan, yaitu hari menjelang Sabat. Karena itu Yusuf, orang Arimatea, seorang anggota Majelis Besar yang terkemuka, yang juga menanti-nantikan Kerajaan Allah, memberanikan diri menghadap Pilatus dan meminta mayat Yesus. Pilatus heran waktu mendengar bahwa Yesus sudah mati. Maka ia memanggil kepala pasukan dan bertanya kepadanya apakah Yesus sudah mati. Sesudah didengarnya keterangan kepala pasukan, ia berkenan memberikan mayat itu kepada Yusuf. Yusuf pun membeli kain lenan, kemudian ia menurunkan mayat Yesus dari salib dan mengapaninya dengan kain lenan itu. Lalu ia membaringkan Dia di dalam kubur yang digali di dalam bukit batu. Kemudian digulingkannya sebuah batu ke pintu kubur itu. Maria Magdalena dan Maria ibu Yoses melihat di mana Yesus dibaringkan.

Keesokan harinya ketika orang banyak yang datang merayakan pesta mendengar, bahwa Yesus sedang di tengah jalan menuju Yerusalem, mereka mengambil daun-daun palem, dan pergi menyongsong Dia sambil berseru-seru: "Hosana! Diberkatilah Dia yang datang dalam nama Tuhan, Raja Israel!" Yesus menemukan seekor keledai muda lalu Ia naik ke atasnya, seperti ada tertulis: "Jangan takut, hai puteri Sion, lihatlah, Rajamu datang, duduk di atas seekor anak keledai." Mula-mula murid-murid Yesus tidak mengerti akan hal itu, tetapi sesudah Yesus dimuliakan, teringatlah mereka, bahwa nas itu mengenai Dia, dan bahwa mereka telah melakukannya juga untuk Dia.

Cuando se aproximaban a Jerusalén, cerca ya de Betfagé y de Betania, al pie del monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos diciéndoles: “Vayan a ese pueblo que ven enfrente; apenas entren encontrarán un burro amarrado, que ningún hombre ha montado todavía. Desátenlo y tráiganlo aquí. Si alguien les pregunta: ¿Por qué hacen eso?, contesten: El Señor lo necesita, pero se lo devolverá cuanto antes.” Se fueron y encontraron en la calle al burro, amarrado delante de una puerta, y lo desataron. Algunos de los que estaban allí les dijeron: “¿Por qué sueltan ese burro?” Ellos les contestaron lo que les había dicho Jesús, y se lo permitieron. Trajeron el burro a Jesús, le pusieron sus capas encima y Jesús montó en él. Muchas personas extendían sus capas a lo largo del camino, mientras otras lo cubrían con ramas cortadas en el campo. Y tanto los que iban delante como los que seguían a Jesús gritaban: “¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor! ¡Ahí viene el bendito reino de nuestro padre David! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!”

El Señor Yahvé me ha concedido el poder hablar como su discípulo. Y ha puesto en mi boca las palabras para fortalecer al que está aburrido. A la mañana él despierta mi mente y lo escucho como lo hacen los discípulos. El Señor Yahvé me ha abierto los oídos y yo no me resistí ni me eché atrás. He ofrecido mi espalda a los que me golpeaban, mis mejillas a quienes me tiraban la barba, y no oculté mi rostro ante las injurias y los escupos. El Señor Yahvé está de mi parte, y por eso no me molestan las ofensas; por eso, puse mi cara dura como piedra, y yo sé que no quedaré frustrado.

El, que era de condición divina, no consideró esta igualdad con Dios como algo que debía guardar celosamente: al contrario, se anonadó a sí mismo, tomando la condición de servidor y haciéndose semejante a los hombres. Y presentándose con aspecto humano, se humilló hasta aceptar por obediencia la muerte y muerte de cruz. Por eso, Dios lo exaltó y le dio el Nombre que está sobre todo nombre, para que al nombre de Jesús, se doble toda rodilla en el cielo, en la tierra y en los abismos, y toda lengua proclame para gloria de Dios Padre: “Jesucristo es el Señor.”

Faltaban dos días para la Fiesta de Pascua y de los Panes Ázimos. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley buscaban la manera de detener a Jesús con astucia para darle muerte, pero decían: “No durante la fiesta, para que no se alborote el pueblo.” Jesús estaba en Betania, en casa de Simón el Leproso. Mientras estaban comiendo, entró una mujer con un frasco precioso como de mármol, lleno de un perfume muy caro, de nardo puro; quebró el cuello del frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús. Entonces algunos se indignaron y decían entre sí: “¿Cómo pudo derrochar este perfume? Se podría haber vendido en más de trescientas monedas de plata para ayudar a los pobres.” Y estaban enojados contra ella. Pero Jesús dijo: “Déjenla tranquila. ¿Por qué la molestan? Lo que ha hecho conmigo es una obra buena. Siempre tienen a los pobres con ustedes y en cualquier momento podrán ayudarlos, pero a mí no me tendrán siempre. Esta mujer ha hecho lo que tenía que hacer, pues de antemano ha ungido mi cuerpo para la sepultura. En verdad les digo: dondequiera que se proclame el Evangelio, en todo el mundo, se contará también su gesto y será su gloria.” Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los Doce, fue donde los jefes de los sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. Se felicitaron por el asunto y prometieron darle dinero. Y Judas comenzó a buscar el momento oportuno para entregarlo. El primer día de la fiesta en que se comen los panes sin levadura, cuando se sacrificaba el Cordero Pascual, sus discípulos le dijeron: “¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a prepararte la Cena de la Pascua?” Entonces Jesús mandó a dos de sus discípulos y les dijo: “Vayan a la ciudad, y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo hasta la casa en que entre y digan al dueño: El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está mi pieza, en que podré comer la Pascua con mis discípulos? Él les mostrará en el piso superior una pieza grande, amueblada y ya lista. Preparen todo para nosotros.” Los discípulos se fueron, entraron en la ciudad, encontraron las cosas tal como Jesús les había dicho y prepararon la Pascua. Al atardecer llegó Jesús con los Doce. Y mientras estaban a la mesa comiendo, les dijo: “Les aseguro que uno de ustedes me va a entregar, uno que comparte mi pan.” Ellos se entristecieron mucho al oírle, y empezaron a preguntarle uno a uno: “¿Seré yo?” Él les respondió: “Es uno de los Doce, uno que moja su pan en el plato conmigo. El Hijo del Hombre se va, conforme dijeron de él las Escrituras, pero ¡pobre de aquel que entrega al Hijo del Hombre! Sería mucho mejor para él no haber nacido.” Durante la comida Jesús tomó pan, y después de pronunciar la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio diciendo: “Tomen, esto es mi cuerpo.” Tomó luego una copa, y después de dar gracias, se la entregó y todos bebieron de ella. Y les dijo: “Esto es mi sangre, la sangre de la Alianza, que será derramada por muchos. En verdad les digo que no volveré a probar el fruto de la vid hasta el día en que lo beba nuevo en el Reino de Dios.” Después de cantar los himnos se dirigieron al monte de los Olivos. Y Jesús les dijo: “Todos ustedes caerán esta noche, pues dice la Escritura: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas. Pero cuando resucite, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.” Entonces Pedro le dijo: “Aunque todos tropiecen y caigan, yo no.” Jesús le contestó: “En verdad te digo que hoy, esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez, me habrás negado tres veces.” Pero él insistía: “Aunque tenga que morir contigo, no te negaré.” Y todos decían lo mismo.
Llegaron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní, y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Siéntense aquí mientras voy a orar.” Y llevó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan. Comenzó a llenarse de temor y angustia, y les dijo: “Siento en mi alma una tristeza de muerte. Quédense aquí y permanezcan despiertos.” Jesús se adelantó un poco, y cayó en tierra suplicando que, si era posible, no tuviera que pasar por aquella hora. Decía: “Abba, o sea, Padre, para ti todo es posible, aparta de mí esta copa. Pero no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.” Volvió y los encontró dormidos. Y dijo a Pedro: “Simón, ¿duermes? ¿De modo que no pudiste permanecer despierto una hora? Estén despiertos y oren para no caer en la tentación; pues el espíritu es animoso, pero la carne es débil.” Y se alejó de nuevo a orar, repitiendo las mismas palabras. Al volver otra vez, los encontró de nuevo dormidos, pues no podían resistir el sueño y no sabían qué decirle. Vino por tercera vez, y les dijo: “Ahora ya pueden dormir y descansar. Está hecho, llegó la hora. El Hijo del Hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores. ¡Levántense, vámonos!; ya viene el que me va a entregar.” Jesús estaba aún hablando cuando se presentó Judas, uno de los Doce; lo acompañaba un buen grupo de gente con espadas y palos, enviados por los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los jefes judíos. El traidor les había dado esta señal: “Al que yo dé un beso, ése es; deténganlo y llévenlo bien custodiado.” Apenas llegó Judas, se acercó a Jesús y le dijo: “¡Maestro, Maestro!” Y lo besó. Ellos entonces lo tomaron y se lo llevaron arrestado. En ese momento uno de los que estaban con Jesús sacó la espada e hirió al servidor del Sumo Sacerdote cortándole una oreja. Jesús dijo a la gente: “A lo mejor buscan a un ladrón y por eso salieron a detenerme con espadas y palos. ¿Por qué no me detuvieron cuando día tras día estaba entre ustedes enseñando en el Templo? Pero tienen que cumplirse las Escrituras.” Y todos los que estaban con Jesús lo abandonaron y huyeron. Un joven seguía a Jesús envuelto sólo en una sábana, y lo tomaron; pero él, soltando la sábana, huyó desnudo. Llevaron a Jesús ante el Sumo Sacerdote, y todos se reunieron allí. Estaban los jefes de los sacerdotes, las autoridades judías y los maestros de la Ley. Pedro lo había seguido de lejos hasta el patio interior del Sumo Sacerdote, y se sentó con los policías del Templo, calentándose al fuego. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y todo el Consejo Supremo buscaban algún testimonio que permitiera condenar a muerte a Jesús, pero no lo encontraban. Varios se presentaron con falsas acusaciones contra él, pero no estaban de acuerdo en lo que decían. Algunos lanzaron esta falsa acusación: “Nosotros le hemos oído decir: Yo destruiré este Templo hecho por la mano del hombre, y en tres días construiré otro no hecho por hombres.” Pero tampoco con estos testimonios estaban de acuerdo. Entonces el Sumo Sacerdote se levantó, pasó adelante y preguntó a Jesús: “¿No tienes nada que responder? ¿Qué es este asunto de que te acusan? Pero él guardaba silencio y no contestaba. De nuevo el Sumo Sacerdote le preguntó: “¿Eres tú el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios Bendito?” Jesús respondió: “Yo soy, y un día verán al Hijo del Hombre sentado a la derecha de Dios poderoso y viniendo en medio de las nubes del cielo.” El Sumo Sacerdote horrorizado rasgó sus vestiduras y dijo: “¿Para qué queremos ya testigos? Ustedes acaban de oír sus palabras blasfemas. ¿Qué les parece?” Y estuvieron de acuerdo en que merecía la pena de muerte. Después algunos empezaron a escupirle. Le cubrieron la cara y le golpeaban antes de decirle: “¡Hazte el profeta!” Y los policías del Templo lo abofeteaban.
DeleteMientras Pedro estaba abajo, en el patio, pasó una de las sirvientas del Sumo Sacerdote. Al verlo cerca del fuego, lo miró fijamente y le dijo: “Tú también andabas con Jesús de Nazaret.” Él lo negó: “No lo conozco, ni entiendo de qué hablas.” Y salió al portal. Pero lo vio la sirvienta y otra vez dijo a los presentes: “Este es uno de ellos.” Y Pedro lo volvió a negar. Después de un rato, los que estaban allí dijeron de nuevo a Pedro: “Es evidente que eres uno de ellos, pues eres galileo.” Entonces se puso a maldecir y a jurar: “Yo no conozco a ese hombre de quien ustedes hablan.” En ese momento se escuchó el segundo canto del gallo. Pedro recordó lo que Jesús le había dicho: “Antes de que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres”, y se puso a llorar. Muy temprano, los jefes de los sacerdotes, los ancianos y los maestros de la Ley (es decir, todo el Consejo o Sanedrín) celebraron consejo. Después de atar a Jesús, lo llevaron y lo entregaron a Pilato. Pilato le preguntó: “¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?” Jesús respondió: “Así es, como tú lo dices.” Como los jefes de los sacerdotes acusaban a Jesús de muchas cosas, Pilato volvió a preguntarle: “¿No contestas nada? ¡Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan!” Pero Jesús ya no le respondió, de manera que Pilato no sabía qué pensar. Cada año, con ocasión de la Pascua, Pilato solía dejar en libertad a un preso, a elección del pueblo. Había uno, llamado Barrabás, que había sido encarcelado con otros revoltosos por haber cometido un asesinato en un motín. Cuando el pueblo subió y empezó a pedir la gracia como de costumbre, Pilato les preguntó: “¿Quieren que ponga en libertad al rey de los judíos?” Pues Pilato veía que los jefes de los sacerdotes le entregaban a Jesús por una cuestión de rivalidad. Pero los sumos sacerdotes incitaron a la gente a que pidiera la libertad de Barrabás. Pilato les dijo: “¿Qué voy a hacer con el que ustedes llaman rey de los judíos?” La gente gritó: “¡Crucifícalo!” Pilato les preguntó: “Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho?” Y gritaron con más fuerza: “¡Crucifícalo!” Pilato quiso dar satisfacción al pueblo: dejó, pues, en libertad a Barrabás y sentenció a muerte a Jesús. Lo hizo azotar, y después lo entregó para que fuera crucificado.
DeleteLos soldados lo llevaron al pretorio, que es el patio interior, y llamaron a todos sus compañeros. Lo vistieron con una capa roja y le colocaron en la cabeza una corona que trenzaron con espinas. Después comenzaron a saludarlo: “¡Viva el rey de los judíos!” Y le golpeaban en la cabeza con una caña, le escupían y se arrodillaban ante él para rendirle homenaje. Después de haberse burlado de él, le quitaron la capa roja y le pusieron de nuevo sus ropas. Los soldados sacaron a Jesús fuera para crucificarlo. En ese momento, un tal Simón de Cirene, el padre de Alejandro y de Rufo, volvía del campo, y los soldados le obligaron a que llevara la cruz de Jesús. Lo llevaron al lugar llamado Gólgota, o Calvario, palabra que significa “calavera”. Después de ofrecerle vino mezclado con mirra, que él no quiso tomar, lo crucificaron y se repartieron sus ropas, sorteándolas entre ellos. Eran como las nueve de la mañana cuando lo crucificaron. Pusieron una inscripción con el motivo de su condena, que decía: “El rey de los judíos.” Crucificaron con él también a dos ladrones, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. Así se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Y fue contado entre los malhechores. Los que pasaban lo insultaban y decían moviendo la cabeza: “Tú, que destruyes el Templo y lo levantas de nuevo en tres días, sálvate a ti mismo y baja de la cruz.” Igualmente los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley se burlaban de él, y decían entre sí: “Salvaba a otros, pues se salvará a sí mismo. Que ese Mesías, ese rey de Israel, baje ahora de la cruz: cuando lo veamos, creeremos.” Incluso lo insultaban los que estaban crucificados con él. Llegado el mediodía, la oscuridad cubrió todo el país hasta las tres de la tarde y a esa hora Jesús gritó con voz potente: “Eloí, Eloí, lammá sabactani”, que quiere decir: “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?” Al oírlo, algunos de los que estaban allí dijeron: “Está llamando a Elías.” Uno de ellos corrió a mojar una esponja en vinagre, la puso en la punta de una caña y le ofreció de beber, diciendo: “Veamos si viene Elías a bajarlo.” Pero Jesús, dando un fuerte grito, expiró. En seguida la cortina que cerraba el santuario del Templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo. Al mismo tiempo el capitán romano que estaba frente a Jesús, al ver cómo había expirado, dijo: “Verdaderamente este hombre era hijo de Dios.” Había unas mujeres que miraban de lejos, entre ellas María Magdalena, María, madre de Santiago el Menor y de José, y Salomé. Cuando Jesús estaba en Galilea, ellas lo seguían y lo servían. Con ellas estaban también otras más que habían subido con Jesús a Jerusalén. Había caído la tarde. Como era el día de la Preparación, es decir, la víspera del sábado, intervino José de Arimatea. Ese miembro respetable del Consejo supremo era de los que esperaban el Reino de Dios, y fue directamente donde Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Pilato se extrañó que Jesús hubiera muerto tan pronto y llamó al centurión para saber si realmente era así. Después de escuchar al centurión, Pilato entregó a José el cuerpo de Jesús. José lo bajó de la cruz y lo envolvió en una sábana que había comprado, lo colocó en un sepulcro excavado en la roca e hizo rodar una piedra grande contra la entrada de la tumba. María Magdalena y María, la madre de José, estaban allí observando dónde lo depositaban.

Narating nina Jesus ang mga bayan ng Bethfage at Bethania, malapit sa may Bundok ng mga Olibo. Nang papalapit na sila sa Jerusalem, pinauna ni Jesus ang dalawa sa mga alagad at sinabi sa kanila, “Pumunta kayo sa susunod na nayon. Pagpasok na pagpasok, makikita ninyo ang isang batang asno na hindi pa nasasakyan ninuman. Kalagan ninyo iyon at dalhin dito. Kapag may nagtanong kung bakit ninyo kinakalagan iyon, sabihin ninyong iyon ay kailangan ng Panginoon at ibabalik din niya agad.” Kaya't lumakad ang dalawang alagad at nakita nga nila ang batang asno sa tabi ng daan, nakatali ito sa may pinto ng isang bahay. Nang kinakalagan na nila ang hayop, tinanong sila ng ilang nakatayo roon, “Bakit ninyo kinakalagan iyan?” Sumagot sila gaya ng bilin ni Jesus, at hinayaan na silang umalis. Dinala nila kay Jesus ang batang asno. Matapos isapin sa likod nito ang kanilang mga balabal ay sumakay si Jesus. Marami ang naglatag ng kanilang mga balabal sa daan, samantalang ang iba nama'y pumutol ng madahong sanga ng kahoy at iyon ang kanilang inilatag sa daan. Ang mga tao sa unahan at sa hulihan ni Jesus ay sumisigaw ng ganito, “Purihin ang Diyos! Pinagpala ang dumarating sa pangalan ng Panginoon! Pagpalain ang malapit nang itatatag na kaharian ng ating amang si David! Purihin ang Panginoon sa Kataas-taasan!”
Unang pagbabasa (Isaias 50: 4–7)
Ang pagbabasa sa aklat ni propetang Isaias.
Ang Panginoong Yahweh ang nagturo sa akin ng aking sasabihin, para tulungan ang mahihina. Tuwing umaga'y nananabik akong malaman kung ano ang ituturo niya sa akin. Binigyan ako ng Panginoong Yahweh ng pang-unawa, hindi ako naghimagsik o tumalikod sa kanya. Hindi ako gumanti nang bugbugin nila ako, hindi ako kumibo nang insultuhin nila ako. Pinabayaan ko silang bunutin ang aking balbas at luraan ang aking mukha. Hindi ko pinansin ang mga pag-insultong ginawa nila sa akin, sapagkat ang Panginoong Yahweh ang tumutulong sa akin. Handa akong magtiis, sapagkat aking nalalaman na ako'y hindi mapapahiya.

Pangalwang pagbabasa (Filipos 2: 6–11)
Ang pagbabasa sa sulat ni San Pablo sa mga taga-Filipos.
Kahit taglay niya ang kalikasan ng Diyos, hindi niya ipinagpilitang manatiling kapantay ng Diyos. Sa halip, kusa niyang binitawan ang pagiging kapantay ng Diyos, at namuhay na isang alipin. Ipinanganak siya bilang tao. At nang siya'y maging tao, nagpakumbaba siya at naging masunurin hanggang kamatayan, maging ito man ay kamatayan sa krus. Dahil dito, siya'y lubusang itinaas ng Diyos, at binigyan ng pangalang higit sa lahat ng pangalan. Pasyon (Marcos 14:1 – 15:47)

Dalawang araw na lamang at Pista na ng Paskwa at ng Tinapay na Walang Pampaalsa. Ang mga punong pari at mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan ay patuloy na naghahanap ng paraan upang maipadakip si Jesus nang palihim at maipapatay. “Huwag sa kapistahan at baka magkagulo ang mga tao,” sabi nila. Nasa Bethania noon si Jesus, sa bahay ni Simon na may ketong. Habang siya'y kumakain, dumating ang isang babaing may dalang isang sisidlang alabastro na puno ng napakamahal na pabango mula sa katas ng purong nardo. Binasag niya ang sisidlan at ibinuhos ang pabango sa ulo ni Jesus. Nagalit ang ilang naroroon at sila'y nag-usap-usap, “Bakit niya inaksaya ang pabango? Maaaring ipagbili iyon nang mahigit sa tatlong daang salaping pilak at maibigay sa mga dukha ang pinagbilhan!” At pinagalitan nila ang babae. Ngunit sinabi naman ni Jesus, “Bakit ninyo siya ginugulo? Pabayaan ninyo siya! Isang mabuting bagay ang ginawa niyang ito sa akin. Sapagkat habang panaho'y kasama ninyo ang mga dukha, at anumang oras ninyong naisin ay makakagawa kayo sa kanila ng mabuti. Ngunit ako'y hindi ninyo kasama habang panahon. Ginawa niya ang kanyang makakaya; hindi pa ma'y binuhusan na niya ng pabango ang aking katawan bilang paghahanda sa paglilibing sa akin. Tandaan ninyo, saanman sa buong mundo ipangaral ang Magandang Balita, ang ginawa ng babaing ito ay ipahahayag bilang pag-alaala sa kanya.” Si Judas Iscariote, na kabilang sa Labindalawa, ay pumunta sa mga punong pari upang ipagkanulo si Jesus. Natuwa sila nang marinig nila ang alok ni Judas at nangakong bibigyan siya ng salapi. Mula noo'y humanap na si Judas ng pagkakataong maipagkanulo si Jesus. Unang araw noon ng Pista ng Tinapay na Walang Pampaalsa, araw ng paghahain ng korderong pampaskwa. Tinanong si Jesus ng kanyang mga alagad, “Saan po ninyo nais na maghanda kami ng hapunang pampaskwa?” Inutusan niya ang dalawa sa kanyang mga alagad, “Pumunta kayo sa bayan at may masasalubong kayong isang lalaking may dalang banga ng tubig. Sundan ninyo siya sa bahay na kanyang papasukan at sabihin ninyo sa may-ari, ‘Ipinapatanong po ng Guro kung mayroon kayong silid na maaaring magamit niya at ng kanyang mga alagad para sa hapunang pampaskwa.’ At ituturo niya sa inyo ang isang malaking silid sa itaas na mayroon nang kagamitan. Doon kayo maghanda para sa atin.” Nagpunta nga sa bayan ang mga alagad at natagpuan nila roon ang lahat, gaya ng sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila. At inihanda nila ang hapunang pampaskwa. Kinagabihan, dumating si Jesus na kasama ang Labindalawa. Habang sila'y kumakain, sinabi ni Jesus, “Tandaan ninyo ito: isa sa inyo na kasalo ko ngayon ay magkakanulo sa akin.” Nalungkot ang mga alagad, at ang bawat isa ay nagtanong sa kanya, “Hindi ako iyon, di po ba, Panginoon?” Sumagot siya, “Isa siya sa inyong labindalawa, na kasabay ko sa pagsawsaw ng tinapay sa mangkok. Papanaw ang Anak ng Tao ayon sa nasusulat tungkol sa kanya, subalit kahabag-habag ang taong magkakanulo sa kanya! Mabuti pa sa taong iyon ang hindi na siya ipinanganak.”
Habang kumakain sila, si Jesus ay dumampot ng tinapay at nagpasalamat sa Diyos. Pagkatapos, kanyang pinaghati-hati ang tinapay at iniabot sa mga alagad. Sinabi niya, “Kunin ninyo ito; ito ang aking katawan.” Dumampot din siya ng kopa at matapos magpasalamat sa Diyos ay iniabot din niya iyon sa mga alagad, at uminom silang lahat. Sinabi niya, “Ito ang aking dugo; pinapagtibay nito ang tipan ng Diyos. Ang aking dugo ay mabubuhos para sa marami. Tandaan ninyo: hinding-hindi na ako muling iinom pa ng katas ng ubas hanggang sa araw na inumin kong panibago sa kaharian ng Diyos.” Umawit sila ng isang himno, at pagkatapos ay nagpunta sila sa Bundok ng mga Olibo. Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Ako'y iiwan ninyong lahat, sapagkat sinasabi sa kasulatan, ‘Papatayin ko ang pastol at magkakawatak-watak ang mga tupa.’ Ngunit pagkatapos na ako'y muling buhayin, mauuna ako sa inyo sa Galilea.” Sumagot si Pedro, “Kahit na po kayo iwan ng lahat, hindi ko kayo iiwan.” Sabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Tandaan mo, sa gabi ring ito, bago tumilaok ang manok nang makalawa, tatlong beses mo akong ikakaila.” Subalit lalong ipinagdiinan ni Pedro, “Kahit ako'y pataying kasama ninyo, hindi ko kayo ikakaila.” Ganoon din ang sinabi ng lahat. Dumating sila sa isang lugar na tinatawag na Getsemani. Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanyang mga alagad, “Maupo muna kayo rito habang ako'y nananalangin.” At isinama niya sina Pedro, Santiago at Juan. Nagsimulang mabagabag at maghirap ang kanyang kalooban. Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Ang puso ko'y labis na nalulungkot at ako'y halos mamatay na! Maghintay kayo rito at magbantay.” Lumayo siya nang kaunti, at pagkatapos ay nagpatirapa upang manalangin na kung maaari'y huwag nang sumapit sa kanya ang oras ng paghihirap. Nanalangin siya, “Ama ko, Ama ko! Magagawa mo ang lahat ng bagay. Alisin mo sa akin ang paghihirap na ito, ngunit hindi ang kalooban ko kundi ang kalooban mo ang masunod.” Nagbalik siya at dinatnan niyang natutulog ang tatlong alagad. Sinabi niya kay Pedro, “Natutulog ka ba, Simon? Hindi ka ba makapagbantay kahit isang oras man lamang? Magbantay kayo at manalangin upang huwag kayong madaig ng tukso. Ang espiritu'y nakahanda ngunit ang laman ay mahina.” Muling lumayo si Jesus upang manalangin at inulit niya ang kanyang kahilingan. Nagbalik siyang muli sa kanyang mga alagad, at sila'y naratnan niyang natutulog dahil sila'y antok na antok. At hindi nila malaman kung ano ang kanilang isasagot sa kanya. Sa ikatlo niyang pagbabalik ay sinabi niya sa kanila, “Natutulog pa ba kayo at namamahinga? Tama na, sapagkat dumating na ang oras upang ang Anak ng Tao'y ibigay sa kamay ng mga makasalanan. Bumangon kayo! Narito na ang magkakanulo sa akin.”
DeleteNagsasalita pa si Jesus nang dumating si Judas na kabilang sa Labindalawa. May kasama siyang maraming tao na may mga dalang tabak at pamalo. Sila'y isinugo ng mga punong pari, mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan, at mga pinuno ng bayan. Bago pa man dumating, nagbigay na si Judas ng isang hudyat, “Kung sino ang hahalikan ko, siya iyon. Dakpin ninyo siya at bantayang mabuti.” Pagdating ni Judas, agad siyang lumapit kay Jesus. “Guro!” ang bati niya, at ito'y kanyang hinalikan. Agad ngang sinunggaban at dinakip ng mga tao si Jesus. Bumunot ng tabak ang isa sa mga nakatayo roon at tinaga ang alipin ng pinakapunong pari, at natagpas ang tainga niyon. Sinabi ni Jesus sa mga tao, “Ako ba'y tulisan at naparito kayong may dalang tabak at pamalo upang ako'y dakpin? Araw-araw akong nagtuturo sa Templo at naroon din kayo, ngunit hindi ninyo ako dinakip. Subalit kailangang matupad ang sinasabi ng Kasulatan!” Tumakas ang lahat ng mga alagad at iniwan siya. Sinundan si Jesus ng isang binatang walang damit maliban sa balabal niyang lino. Sinunggaban ito ng mga tao ngunit iniwan niya ang kanyang balabal at tumakas na hubad. Dinala nila si Jesus sa bahay ng pinakapunong pari na kung saan ay nagkakatipon na doon ang lahat ng mga punong pari, mga pinuno ng bayan at mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. Si Pedro'y sumunod kay Jesus, ngunit malayo ang agwat niya sa kanya. Nagtuloy siya hanggang sa patyo ng pinakapunong pari at naupo upang magpainit sa tabi ng apoy. Katabi niya roon ang mga bantay. Ang mga punong pari at ang buong Kataas-taasang Kapulungan ng mga Judio ay naghanap ng maipaparatang kay Jesus upang siya'y maipapatay, ngunit wala silang makita. Maraming saksi ang nagsabi ng kasinungalingan laban sa kanya, ngunit hindi nagkatugma-tugma ang kanilang mga patotoo. May ilang sumaksi ng kasinungalingan laban sa kanya na nagsasabi, “Narinig naming sinabi ng taong iyan, ‘Gigibain ko ang Templong ito na gawa ng tao at sa loob ng tatlong araw ay magtatayo ako ng iba na di gawa ng tao.’” Ngunit hindi rin nagkatugma-tugma ang kanilang mga patotoo tungkol dito. Tumayo ang pinakapunong pari sa harap ng kapulungan at tinanong si Jesus, “Wala ka bang isasagot sa paratang nila sa iyo?” Ngunit hindi umimik si Jesus at hindi sumagot ng anuman. Muli siyang tinanong ng pinakapunong pari, “Ikaw nga ba ang Cristo, ang Anak ng Kapuri-puri?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Ako nga. Makikita ninyo ang Anak ng Tao na nakaupo sa kanan ng Makapangyarihan at dumarating na nasa mga ulap ng kalangitan.” Pinunit ng pinakapunong pari ang kanyang kasuotan at sinabi, “Kailangan pa ba natin ng mga saksi? Narinig ninyo ang kanyang paglapastangan sa Diyos! Ano ang inyong pasya?” At nagkaisa silang lahat na hatulan siya ng kamatayan. At siya'y sinimulan nilang pahirapan; dinuraan siya ng ilan, piniringan at pinagsusuntok. “Hulaan mo nga, sino ang sumuntok sa iyo?” sabi nila. At siya'y binugbog ng mga bantay. Samantala, si Pedro naman ay nasa patyo sa ibaba nang lumapit ang isang babaing katulong ng pinakapunong pari. Nakita nito si Pedro na nagpapainit sa apoy, pinagmasdang mabuti at pagkatapos ay sinabi, “Kasama ka rin ni Jesus na taga-Nazaret!” Ngunit nagkaila si Pedro, “Wala akong nalalaman sa sinasabi mo.” Umalis siya at nagpunta sa labasan at tumilaok ang manok. Nakita na naman siya ng babaing katulong at sinabi sa mga naroon, “Ang taong ito'y isa sa kanila!” At muling nagkaila si Pedro. Makalipas ang ilang sandali, sinabi kay Pedro ng mga nakatayo roon, “Talagang isa ka nga sa kanila. Taga-Galilea ka rin, hindi ba?” “Parusahan nawa ako ng Diyos kung nagsisinungaling ako! Hindi ko kilala ang taong iyan,” sagot ni Pedro. Siya namang pagtilaok muli ng manok. Naalala ni Pedro ang sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Bago tumilaok ang manok nang dalawang beses, tatlong beses mo akong ikakaila.” Nanlumo siya at nanangis.

Ipinagapos nila si Jesus, at dinala kay Pilato. “Ikaw ba ang Hari ng mga Judio?” tanong sa kanya ni Pilato. “Ikaw na ang may sabi,” tugon naman ni Jesus. Nagharap ng maraming paratang ang mga punong pari laban kay Jesus kaya't siya'y muling tinanong ni Pilato, “Wala ka bang isasagot? Narinig mo ang marami nilang paratang laban sa iyo.” Ngunit hindi pa rin sumagot si Jesus, kaya't nagtaka si Pilato. Tuwing Pista ng Paskwa ay nagpapalaya si Pilato ng isang bilanggo, sinumang hilingin sa kanya ng mga taong-bayan. May isang bilanggo noon na ang pangalan ay Barabbas. Kasama siya sa mga nagrebelde, at nakapatay siya noong panahon ng pag-aalsa. Nang lumapit ang mga tao kay Pilato upang hilingin sa kanya na gawin niya ang dati niyang ginagawa, tinanong sila ni Pilato, “Ibig ba ninyong palayain ko ang Hari ng mga Judio?” Sinabi niya ito sapagkat batid ni Pilato na inggit lamang ang nag-udyok sa mga punong pari upang isakdal si Jesus. Ngunit sinulsulan ng mga punong pari ang mga tao na si Barabbas ang hilinging palayain. Kaya't muli silang tinanong ni Pilato, “Ano naman ang gagawin ko sa taong ito na tinatawag ninyong Hari ng mga Judio?” “Ipako siya sa krus!” sigaw ng mga tao. “Bakit, ano ba ang kasalanan niya?” tanong ni Pilato. Ngunit lalo pang sumigaw ang mga tao, “Ipako siya sa krus!” Sa paghahangad ni Pilato na mapagbigyan ang mga tao, pinalaya niya si Barabbas at si Jesus naman ay kanyang ipinahagupit, at pagkatapos ay ibinigay sa kanila upang ipako sa krus. Dinala ng mga kawal si Jesus sa bakuran ng palasyo ng gobernador, at kanilang tinipon doon ang buong batalyon. Sinuotan nila si Jesus ng balabal na kulay ube. Kumuha sila ng halamang matinik, ginawa iyong korona at ipinutong sa kanya. Pagkatapos, sila'y pakutyang nagpugay at bumati sa kanya, “Mabuhay ang Hari ng mga Judio!” Siya'y pinaghahampas sa ulo, pinagduduraan at pakutyang niluhud-luhuran. Matapos kutyain, hinubad nila sa kanya ang balabal na kulay ube, sinuotan ng sarili niyang damit, at inilabas upang ipako sa krus. Nasalubong nila sa daan ang isang lalaking galing sa bukid, si Simon na taga-Cirene na ama nina Alejandro at Rufo. Pilit nilang ipinapasan sa kanya ang krus ni Jesus. Kanilang dinala si Jesus sa lugar na tinatawag na Golgotha, na ang ibig sabihi'y “Pook ng Bungo.” Siya'y binibigyan nila ng alak na may kahalong mira, ngunit hindi niya ito ininom. Ipinako siya sa krus at saka pinaghati-hatian ang kanyang damit sa pamamagitan ng palabunutan. Ikasiyam ng umaga nang ipako siya sa krus. Isinulat sa itaas ng krus ang paratang laban sa kanya, “Ang Hari ng mga Judio.” May dalawang tulisang kasama niyang ipinako sa krus, isa sa kanan at isa sa kaliwa.

Nagdilim sa buong lupain mula sa tanghaling tapat hanggang sa ikatlo ng hapon. Nang ikatlo na ng hapon, sumigaw si Jesus, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” na ang kahulugan ay, “Diyos ko, Diyos ko, bakit mo ako pinabayaan?” Narinig ito ng ilan sa mga nakatayo roon at kanilang sinabi, “Pakinggan ninyo, tinatawag niya si Elias!” May tumakbo upang kumuha ng isang espongha; ito'y isinawsaw sa maasim na alak, inilagay sa dulo ng isang patpat at ipinasipsip kay Jesus. “Tingnan nga natin kung darating si Elias upang iligtas siya,” sabi niya. Sumigaw nang malakas si Jesus at pagkatapos ay nalagutan ng hininga. At napunit sa gitna ang tabing ng Templo, mula sa itaas hanggang sa ibaba. Nakatayo sa harap ng krus ang opisyal ng mga kawal. Nang makita kung paano namatay si Jesus, sinabi niya, “Tunay ngang Anak ng Diyos ang taong ito!” Naroon din ang ilang babaing nakatanaw mula sa malayo. Kabilang sa kanila si Maria Magdalena, si Salome, at si Maria na ina ng nakababatang si Santiago at ni Jose. Mula pa sa Galilea ay sumusunod na sila at naglilingkod kay Jesus. Naroon din ang iba pang mga babaing kasama ni Jesus na pumunta sa Jerusalem. Nang dumidilim na, dumating si Jose na taga-Arimatea, isang iginagalang na kasapi ng Kapulungan. Siya rin ay naghihintay sa pagdating ng kaharian ng Diyos. Dahil iyon ay Araw ng Paghahanda, o bisperas ng Araw ng Pamamahinga, naglakas-loob siyang lumapit kay Pilato upang hingin ang bangkay ni Jesus. Nagtaka si Pilato nang marinig niyang patay na si Jesus kaya't ipinatawag niya ang opisyal at tinanong kung matagal na siyang namatay. Nang malaman niya sa kapitan na talagang patay na si Jesus, pumayag siyang kunin ni Jose ang bangkay. Ibinabâ mula sa krus ang bangkay ni Jesus at binalot sa telang lino na binili ni Jose. Pagkatapos, ang bangkay ay inilagay sa isang libingang hinukay sa bato, at iginulong ni Jose ang isang malaking bato sa pintuan ng libingan. Nagmamasid naman sina Maria Magdalena at Maria na ina ni Jose, at nakita nila kung saan inilibing si Jesus.

エルサレム郊外のオリーブ山のふもとに、ベテパゲとベタニヤという二つの村がありました。その近くまで来られた時、イエスはこう言って、弟子を二人、村に使いに出されました。「あそこの村に行きなさい。するとすぐに、だれも乗ったことのないろばの子がつないであるのに気づくでしょう。それをほどいて、連れて来なさい。もし、だれかに何をしているのかと聞かれたら、『主がお入用なのです。すぐお返しします』とだけ答えなさい。」二人が出かけてみると、なるほど、表通りに面した家の外に、ろばの子がつないであります。さっそく綱をほどきにかかると、そばにいた人たちが見とがめ、「そのろばの子を、いったいどうしようというんだ」と尋ねました。二人がイエスに教えられたとおりに答えると、その人たちは納得しました。ろばの子をイエスのところに連れて来た弟子たちは、上着を脱ぎ、ろばの背中にかけました。イエスがその上に乗られると、群衆の中の多くの者たちも次々と上着を脱ぎ、イエスの進んで行かれる道に敷いたり、野原から葉のついた枝を切ってきて、敷き並べたりしました。イエスを行列の真ん中にし、ぐるりと取り囲んだ群衆が、口々に叫びました。「王様、ばんざーい！」「主の御名によって来られる方に祝福を！」「この方が興される御国に、われらの父祖ダビデの国に祝福を！」「全世界の王、ばんざーい！」
第一読み物（イザヤ書第50章：第4詩–第7詩）
この読み物はイザヤ書です。
神である主は私に、知恵のことばを授けました。疲れきった人に何を言ったらいいかを教えるためです。朝ごとに、主は私を目ざめさせ、御心への理解を深めさせてくれます。主のことばを、私は耳をすまして聞きます。逆らったり、顔を背けたりしません。むち打つ者に背中をさらし、ひげを抜こうとする者に頬を差し出しました。彼らは私の顔につばをはきました。しかし私は辱められても、身を隠しません。主の助けがあるので、うろたえたり、気を落としたりしません。固く心に勝利を収めると確信しています。
詩編（詩編第22章：第8詩–第9詩と第17詩–第20詩と第23詩–第24詩）
お答えは「神よ、私の神よ。どうして、私をお見捨てになったのですか？」

第二読み物（ピリピ人第2章：第6詩–第11詩）
この読み物はピリピ人への手紙です。
キリストは神であられるのに、神としての権利を要求したり、それに執着したりはなさいませんでした。かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。そればかりか、さらに自分を低くし、犯罪人と同じようになって十字架上で死なれたのです。しかし、それゆえに、神はキリストを高く天に引き上げ、最高の名をお与えになりました。それは、その御名のもとに、すべてのものが天でも地でもひざまずき、すべての口が「イエス・キリストは主です」と告白して、父なる神がほめたたえられるためです。
福音書／パッション（マルコ第14章：第1詩–第15章：第47詩）

過越の祭り（パン種を入れないパンを食べる、年に一度のユダヤ人の祭り）が二日後に迫りました。いぜんとして、祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちは、イエスを捕らえて死刑にしようと、その機会をうかがっていました。しかし、「祭りの間はまずいだろう。民衆が暴動でも起こすと取り返しがつかないから」と用心していました。さてイエスは、ベタニヤの、ツァラアトに冒されたシモンという人の家におられました。ちょうど食卓に着いておられる時、女が一人、入って来ました。高価な香油の入った美しいつぼを持っています。女はイエスに近づくと、いきなりつぼの封を切り、香油をイエスの頭に注ぎかけました。同席していた何人かの者たちは腹を立て、「なんてもったいないことをする女だ。この香油なら高く売れて、貧しい人たちに施しをすることもできたのに」と、女をとがめました。しかしイエスは、彼らに言われました。「彼女のするままにさせておきなさい。良いことをしてくれたのに、なぜ非難するのですか。貧しい人たちは、いつも身近にいるのだから、その気があれば、いつでも助けることができます。しかし、わたしはもう、そんなに長くこの地上にいないのです。この女は、精一杯のことをしてくれました。わたしの葬りの準備に香油を塗ってくれたのですから。よく言っておきます。世界中どこででも、福音が伝えられる所では、この女のしたことも必ず賞賛されるでしょう。」ところで、弟子の一人イスカリオテのユダは、イエスを売り渡そうと祭司長たちのところに出かけました。ユダが来意を告げると、祭司長たちは喜び、謝礼を払うことを約束しました。それ以来ユダは、イエスを引き渡すチャンスをねらうようになりました。過越の祭りの最初の日、すなわち、小羊をいけにえとしてささげる日に、弟子たちはイエスに、「どこで過越の食事をなさるおつもりですか」と尋ねました。そこでイエスは、弟子を二人エルサレムへやり、その準備をさせることにしました。「町を歩いて行くと、水がめを持って来る男に出会うから、その男について行きなさい。彼が入った家の主人に、『私どもの先生が、過越の食事をする部屋を見て来るようにと申しました』と言いなさい。主人はすっかり用意の整った二階の広間を見せてくれるはずです。そこで食事のしたくをしなさい。」二人が町に入って行くと、何もかもイエスの言われたとおりでした。こうして、過越の準備は整いました。夕方、イエスと弟子たちは連れ立って、そこにやって来ました。みなが食卓を囲んで食事をしていると、イエスは言われました。「いいですか。よく言っておきます。今わたしといっしょに食事をしている者の一人が、わたしを裏切ります。」これを聞いた弟子たちは、ひどく心を痛め、口々に、「まさか、私ではありませんよね」と尋ねました。「あなたがた十二人の中の一人で、今、わたしといっしょに同じ鉢にパンを浸している者です。預言者が、ずっと昔からはっきり預言してきたように、わたしは死ななければなりません。けれども、わたしを裏切る者はのろわれます。その人はむしろ生まれてこなかったほうがよかったのです。」食事の最中にイエスはパンを取り、神の祝福を祈ってからそれをちぎり、弟子たちに分け与えられました。「食べなさい。これはわたしの体です。」それからぶどう酒の杯を取り、神に感謝の祈りをささげた後、弟子たちに与えられました。弟子たちはみな、その杯から飲みました。イエスは言われました。「これは多くの人のために流す、わたしの血です。神と人間との新しい契約を保証する血です。よく言っておきますが、やがて神の国で新しく飲むその日まで、わたしはもう決してぶどう酒を飲みません。」一同は賛美歌を歌ってから、オリーブ山に向かいました。イエスは、弟子たちに言われました。「あなたがたはみな、わたしを見捨てるでしょう。神が預言者を通して、『わたしが羊飼いを打つ。すると羊は散り散りになる』と言われたとおりに。だが、わたしは復活してガリラヤに行きます。そこであなたがたに会うでしょう。」すると、ペテロが言いました。「だれがどうあろうと、私だけは、この私だけは絶対にあなたを捨てません。」イエスは、「ペテロよ。あなたは明日の朝、鶏が二度鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うでしょう」と言われました。「とんでもない！ たとえ死んでも、絶対にあなたを知らないなどとは言いません。」ペテロは大声で言いはりました。ほかの弟子たちも、口々に誓い始めました。さて一同は、オリーブの木の茂っている、ゲツセマネと呼ばれる園にやって来ました。「わたしが向こうで祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい。」イエスはこうお命じになると、ペテロとヤコブとヨハネだけを連れて、奥のほうに行かれました。そして、恐れと絶望に襲われて、イエスはもだえ苦しみ始められました。「わたしは悲しみのあまり、今にも死にそうです。ここを離れず、わたしといっしょに目を覚ましていなさい。」イエスはそう言うと、三人から少し離れた所へ行き、地面にひれ伏して、もしできることなら、自分を待っているその時が来ないように、と祈られました。「父よ、わたしの父よ。あなたはどんなことでもおできになります。どうぞ、この杯を取り除いてください。しかし、わたしの思いどおりにではなく、あなたのお心のままになさってください。」イエスが弟子たちのところへ戻って来られると、三人とも、ぐっすり眠り込んでいるではありませんか。そこで、ペテロに声をかけました。「シモンよ。眠っているのですか。たったの一時間でも、わたしといっしょに目を覚ましていられなかったのですか。しっかり目を覚まして祈っていなさい。さもないと誘惑に負けてしまいます。心は燃えていても、肉体は弱いのですから。」こうしてまた彼らから離れ、先ほどと同じことを祈られました。そのあと、もう一度弟子たちのところへ戻って来ると、またもや三人とも眠り込んでいます。ひどく眠気がさして我慢できなかったからです。彼らは何と言いわけしたらよいか、わかりませんでした。イエスは三度目に戻って来て言われました。「まだ眠っているのですか。それだけ眠れば十分でしょう。さあ、時が来ました。いよいよ、わたしは悪い者たちの手に売り渡されるのです。さあ、立ちなさい。行くのです。見なさい。裏切り者がやって来ました。」
イエスがまだ言い終わらないうちに、祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちの差し向けた暴徒たちが、手に手に剣やこん棒を持って、弟子の一人であるユダを先頭に近づいて来ました。ユダは前もって彼らと、自分が口づけのあいさつをする相手がイエスだから、その男を捕まえて、引き立てて行くように、と打ち合わせておきました。それで、やって来るとすぐイエスに近づき、「先生」と声をかけて、さも親しそうに抱きしめ、あいさつの口づけをしました。そのとたん、暴徒たちがいっせいにイエスを取り押さえました。その時、イエスのそばにいた一人がさっと剣を抜き放つと、大祭司の部下に切りかかり、相手の耳を切り落としました。イエスは暴徒たちに向かって言われました。「剣やこん棒で、これほどものものしい武装をして来なければならないほど、わたしは凶悪な犯罪者なのですか。なぜ、神殿で捕らえようとしなかったのですか。わたしはあそこで毎日教えていたのに。けれども、これもみな、わたしについての預言が実現するためなのです。」この時にはもう弟子たちはみな、イエスを見捨てて逃げ去っていました。ただ一人、亜麻布を一枚だけまとって、イエスのうしろからついて行く青年がいました。ところが、途中で暴徒たちに見つかり、危うく捕まりそうになったので、引きちぎられた亜麻布を脱ぎ捨て、裸のまま逃げて行きました。イエスは、大祭司の家に引き立てられて行きました。祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちも急いで駆けつけ、まもなく全員がそろいました。さて、ペテロは遠くからあとをつけて行き、うまく門からもぐり込んで、兵士たちにまぎれて火のそばでうずくまっていました。中では、イエスに死刑の宣告を下すための証拠集めに、祭司長やユダヤの最高議会の全議員がやっきになっていましたが、何も見つけることができません。偽の証人は大ぜい名乗り出たのですが、証言がみな食い違っていたのです。そのうち何人かが、「確か、この男が、『人間の手で造られた神殿をこわして、人間の手によらない神殿を三日で建ててみせる』と言っているのを聞きました」と偽証しました。しかしこの点でも、証言は一致しませんでした。その時、大祭司が進み出て、イエスに問いただしました。「おまえはこれらの訴えに答えないつもりか。どうなんだ。何も釈明する気はないのか。」イエスは、ひとこともお答えになりません。大祭司は続けて、「おまえは神の子、キリストなのか」と尋ねました。「そのとおりです。あなたがたは、やがてわたしが神の右の座につき、雲に乗ってもう一度この地上に来るのを見るでしょう。」この答えに、大祭司は即座に自分の着物を引き裂き、叫びました。「これだけ聞けば十分だ！ さあ、お聞きのとおりだ。神を汚したこの男をどうしてくれよう。」こうして彼らは、イエスの死刑を全員一致で決めました。このあと、ある者たちは、イエスにつばを吐きかけたり、目隠ししてこぶしで顔をなぐり、「今なぐったのはだれか当ててみろ」とあざけったりしました。役人たちもイエスの身柄を受け取って、平手で打ちました。一方ペテロは、下の中庭にいました。大祭司の女中の一人が、火にあたっているペテロに気づき、じっと見つめて言いました。「あら、あんた。あのナザレ人イエスといっしょにいた人じゃないの？」ペテロはそのことばを打ち消し、「変な言いがかりはよしてくれ」と言って、出口のほうへ行きかけました。その時、鶏が鳴きました。すると女中は、またもペテロをしげしげと見て、そばに立っている人たちに、「ほら、あの人。あの人はイエスの弟子よ」と言いふらしました。ペテロはあわててそれを打ち消しました。しばらくすると、火のそばに立っていたほかの男たちも、「おまえは確かにイエスの仲間だ。ガリラヤ人だからな」と騒ぎだしました。ペテロは、「そんな男のことなど知らない。これがうそだったら、どんな罰があたってもかまわない」と叫びました。するとすぐ、鶏が二度目に鳴くのが聞こえました。その瞬間ペテロは、「鶏が二度鳴く前に三度わたしを知らないと言います」という、イエスのことばを思い出したのです。ペテロは激しく泣きくずれました。
Delete朝早く、祭司長と長老、それにユダヤ教の教師たちからなる最高議会の全議員が、次の手はずをあれこれ協議した結果、イエスを縛ったまま、ローマ総督ピラトに引き渡すことに決まりました。「おまえはユダヤ人の王なのか」というピラトの尋問に、イエスは、「そのとおりです」とだけお答えになりました。そこで祭司長たちは、あることないことをあげつらい、イエスを訴えました。これを聞いたピラトは、「どうして何も言わないのか。あんなにまで訴えているのに平気なのか」と尋ねました。しかしイエスは、ひとこともお答えになりません。これにはピラトも驚き、あきれてしまいました。さてピラトは、毎年、過越の祭りには、人々の願うままにユダヤ人の囚人を一人、釈放してやることにしていました。たまたまこの時、暴動で人殺しをし、投獄されていた暴徒たちの中に、バラバという男がいました。群衆はピラトの前に押し寄せ、例年どおり囚人を釈放するよう迫りました。そこで、ピラトは尋ねました。「『ユダヤ人の王』を釈放してほしいのか。おまえたちが赦してほしいのはこの男か。」ピラトがこう言ったのは、イエスが捕らえられたのは、彼の人気をねたむ祭司長たちのでっち上げによるとにらんだからです。ところが、祭司長たちも抜かりはありません。たくみに群衆をけしかけ、イエスではなくバラバの釈放を要求させたのです。「バラバは釈放するとして、おまえたちが王と呼んでいるあの男はいったいどうするつもりか。「十字架につけろ！」「なぜだ。あの男が、いったいどんな悪事を働いたというのだ。」それでも群衆はおさまりません。なおも大声で、「十字架につけろ！」と叫び続けます。ピラトは群衆のきげんをそこねたくなかったので、結局、バラバを釈放することにしました。イエスのほうは、先端に鉛のついたむちで打たせてから、十字架につけるために引き渡しました。ローマ兵たちはイエスを総督官邸内の兵営に引き立てて行き、全部隊を召集しました。その目の前で、イエスに紫色のガウンを着せ、長く鋭いとげのあるいばらで冠を作り、頭にかぶせると、「おい、ユダヤ人の王よ」とはやしたて、皮肉たっぷりに敬礼しました。それから、頭を葦の棒でたたいたり、つばをかけたり、ひれ伏して拝むまねをしたりして、からかいました。こうしてさんざん笑いものにしたあげく、紫色のガウンをはぎとってもとの着物を着せ、いよいよ十字架につけるために引き出しました。途中、ちょうど田舎から来合わせていたクレネ人のシモンという男に、むりやりイエスの十字架を背負わせました〔シモンは、アレキサンデルとルポスの父〕。兵士たちは、イエスをゴルゴタ〔どくろ〕と呼ばれる場所に連れて行きました。そこで、没薬を混ぜたぶどう酒（痛みを和らげる飲み物）を飲ませようとしましたが、イエスはお断りになりました。兵士たちは、イエスを十字架につけてしまうと、さっそくくじを引き、その着物を分け合いました。イエスが十字架につけられたのは、朝の九時ごろでした。イエスの頭上には罪状書きが掲げられ、それには「ユダヤ人の王」と書いてありました。その日、二人の強盗も、イエスといっしょに十字架につけられました。二人の十字架はイエスの両側に立てられました。こうして、「彼は罪人の一人に数えられた」という聖書のことばどおりになったのです。刑場のそばを通りかかった人たちは、大げさな身ぶりで、「神殿を打ちこわして三日で建て直すんだってなあ。そんなに偉いなら、たった今、十字架から降りて来いよ。自分を救ったらどうなんだ！」と、口ぎたなくイエスをののしりました。祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちも、同じようにあざけりました。「人を救っても、自分は救えないというわけか。」「キリスト様。イスラエルの王様。十字架から降りてみろ。そうしたら信じてやろうじゃないか。」イエスの両側で十字架につけられていた強盗までが、悪口をあびせました。さて正午になったころ、あたりが急に暗くなり、一面の闇におおわれました。それが三時間も続きました。三時ごろイエスは大声で、「エリ、エリ、レマ、サバクタニ」と叫ばれました。それは、「わが神、わが神。どうしてわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味です。近くでその声を聞いた人の中には、預言者エリヤを呼んでいるのだと思った者もいました。その時、一人の男がさっと駆け寄り、海綿に酸いぶどう酒を含ませると、それを葦の棒につけて差し出しました。そして、「さあ、エリヤがこの男を降ろしに来るかどうか、とくと見ようじゃないか」と言いました。イエスはもう一度大声で叫ぶと、息を引き取られました。するとどうでしょう。神殿の幕が、上から下まで真っ二つに裂けたのです。十字架のそばに立っていたローマ軍の士官は、イエスの死の有様を見て、「この方はほんとうに神の子だった」と言いました。数人の婦人が、遠くから恐る恐るこの様子をながめていました。それは、マグダラのマリヤ、小ヤコブとヨセの母マリヤ、サロメをはじめ、何人かの婦人たちで、イエスがガリラヤにおられた時、いつも仕えていた人たちでした。ほかにもたくさんの婦人が、イエスといっしょにエルサレムまで来ていました。以上の出来事はすべて、安息日の前日に起こったことです。その日の夕方、一人の人がピラトのところへ行き、勇気を奮い起こして、イエスの遺体を引き取りたいと申し出ました。その人はアリマタヤ出身のヨセフといい、ユダヤの最高議会の有力な議員で、神の国が来ることを熱心に待ち望んでいました。ピラトは、イエスがもう死んでしまったとは信じられず、ローマ軍の士官を呼びつけ、問いただしました。士官が死を確認したので、それならよいと遺体の引き取りを許可しました。ヨセフは亜麻布を買って来ると、イエスの遺体を十字架から取り降ろし、布でくるんで、岩をくり抜いた墓の中に納め、入口は石を転がしてふさぎました。マグダラのマリヤとヨセの母マリヤとは、イエスが葬られるのをじっと見守っていました。

主なる神は、弟子としての舌をわたしに与え疲れた人を励ますように言葉を呼び覚ましてくださる。朝ごとにわたしの耳を呼び覚まし弟子として聞き従うようにしてくださる。主なる神はわたしの耳を開かれた。わたしは逆らわず、退かなかった。打とうとする者には背中をまかせひげを抜こうとする者には頬をまかせた。顔を隠さずに、嘲りと唾を受けた。主なる神が助けてくださるからわたしはそれを嘲りとは思わない。わたしは顔を硬い石のようにする。わたしは知っているわたしが辱められることはない、と。

キリストは、神の身分でありながら、神と等しい者であることに固執しようとは思わず、かえって自分を無にして、僕の身分になり、人間と同じ者になられました。人間の姿で現れ、へりくだって、死に至るまで、それも十字架の死に至るまで従順でした。このため、神はキリストを高く上げ、あらゆる名にまさる名をお与えになりました。こうして、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものがすべて、イエスの御名にひざまずき、すべての舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と公に宣べて、父である神をたたえるのです。

さて、過越祭と除酵祭の二日前になった。祭司長たちや律法学者たちは、なんとか計略を用いてイエスを捕らえて殺そうと考えていた。彼らは、「民衆が騒ぎだすといけないから、祭りの間はやめておこう」と言っていた。イエスがベタニアで重い皮膚病の人シモンの家にいて、食事の席に着いておられたとき、一人の女が、純粋で非常に高価なナルドの香油の入った石膏の壺を持って来て、それを壊し、香油をイエスの頭に注ぎかけた。そこにいた人の何人かが、憤慨して互いに言った。「なぜ、こんなに香油を無駄遣いしたのか。この香油は三百デナリオン以上に売って、貧しい人々に施すことができたのに。」そして、彼女を厳しくとがめた。イエスは言われた。「するままにさせておきなさい。なぜ、この人を困らせるのか。わたしに良いことをしてくれたのだ。貧しい人々はいつもあなたがたと一緒にいるから、したいときに良いことをしてやれる。しかし、わたしはいつも一緒にいるわけではない。この人はできるかぎりのことをした。つまり、前もってわたしの体に香油を注ぎ、埋葬の準備をしてくれた。はっきり言っておく。世界中どこでも、福音が宣べ伝えられる所では、この人のしたことも記念として語り伝えられるだろう。」十二人の一人イスカリオテのユダは、イエスを引き渡そうとして、祭司長たちのところへ出かけて行った。彼らはそれを聞いて喜び、金を与える約束をした。そこでユダは、どうすれば折よくイエスを引き渡せるかとねらっていた。除酵祭の第一日、すなわち過越の小羊を屠る日、弟子たちがイエスに、「過越の食事をなさるのに、どこへ行って用意いたしましょうか」と言った。そこで、イエスは次のように言って、二人の弟子を使いに出された。「都へ行きなさい。すると、水がめを運んでいる男に出会う。その人について行きなさい。その人が入って行く家の主人にはこう言いなさい。『先生が、「弟子たちと一緒に過越の食事をするわたしの部屋はどこか」と言っています。』すると、席が整って用意のできた二階の広間を見せてくれるから、そこにわたしたちのために準備をしておきなさい。」弟子たちは出かけて都に行ってみると、イエスが言われたとおりだったので、過越の食事を準備した。夕方になると、イエスは十二人と一緒にそこへ行かれた。一同が席に着いて食事をしているとき、イエスは言われた。「はっきり言っておくが、あなたがたのうちの一人で、わたしと一緒に食事をしている者が、わたしを裏切ろうとしている。」弟子たちは心を痛めて、「まさかわたしのことでは」と代わる代わる言い始めた。イエスは言われた。「十二人のうちの一人で、わたしと一緒に鉢に食べ物を浸している者がそれだ。人の子は、聖書に書いてあるとおりに、去って行く。だが、人の子を裏切るその者は不幸だ。生まれなかった方が、その者のためによかった。」一同が食事をしているとき、イエスはパンを取り、賛美の祈りを唱えて、それを裂き、弟子たちに与えて言われた。「取りなさい。これはわたしの体である。」また、杯を取り、感謝の祈りを唱えて、彼らにお渡しになった。彼らは皆その杯から飲んだ。そして、イエスは言われた。「これは、多くの人のために流されるわたしの血、契約の血である。はっきり言っておく。神の国で新たに飲むその日まで、ぶどうの実から作ったものを飲むことはもう決してあるまい。」一同は賛美の歌をうたってから、オリーブ山へ出かけた。イエスは弟子たちに言われた。「あなたがたは皆わたしにつまずく。『わたしは羊飼いを打つ。すると、羊は散ってしまう』と書いてあるからだ。しかし、わたしは復活した後、あなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行く。」するとペトロが、「たとえ、みんながつまずいても、わたしはつまずきません」と言った。イエスは言われた。「はっきり言っておくが、あなたは、今日、今夜、鶏が二度鳴く前に、三度わたしのことを知らないと言うだろう。」ペトロは力を込めて言い張った。「たとえ、御一緒に死なねばならなくなっても、あなたのことを知らないなどとは決して申しません。」皆の者も同じように言った。一同がゲツセマネという所に来ると、イエスは弟子たちに、「わたしが祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい」と言われた。そして、ペトロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネを伴われたが、イエスはひどく恐れてもだえ始め、彼らに言われた。「わたしは死ぬばかりに悲しい。ここを離れず、目を覚ましていなさい。」少し進んで行って地面にひれ伏し、できることなら、この苦しみの時が自分から過ぎ去るようにと祈り、こう言われた。「アッバ、父よ、あなたは何でもおできになります。この杯をわたしから取りのけてください。しかし、わたしが願うことではなく、御心に適うことが行われますように。」それから、戻って御覧になると、弟子たちは眠っていたので、ペトロに言われた。「シモン、眠っているのか。わずか一時も目を覚ましていられなかったのか。誘惑に陥らぬよう、目を覚まして祈っていなさい。心は燃えても、肉体は弱い。」更に、向こうへ行って、同じ言葉で祈られた。再び戻って御覧になると、弟子たちは眠っていた。ひどく眠かったのである。彼らは、イエスにどう言えばよいのか、分からなかった。イエスは三度目に戻って来て言われた。「あなたがたはまだ眠っている。休んでいる。もうこれでいい。時が来た。人の子は罪人たちの手に引き渡される。立て、行こう。見よ、わたしを裏切る者が来た。」
さて、イエスがまだ話しておられると、十二人の一人であるユダが進み寄って来た。祭司長、律法学者、長老たちの遣わした群衆も、剣や棒を持って一緒に来た。イエスを裏切ろうとしていたユダは、「わたしが接吻するのが、その人だ。捕まえて、逃がさないように連れて行け」と、前もって合図を決めていた。ユダはやって来るとすぐに、イエスに近寄り、「先生」と言って接吻した。人々は、イエスに手をかけて捕らえた。居合わせた人々のうちのある者が、剣を抜いて大祭司の手下に打ってかかり、片方の耳を切り落とした。そこで、イエスは彼らに言われた。「まるで強盗にでも向かうように、剣や棒を持って捕らえに来たのか。わたしは毎日、神殿の境内で一緒にいて教えていたのに、あなたたちはわたしを捕らえなかった。しかし、これは聖書の言葉が実現するためである。」弟子たちは皆、イエスを見捨てて逃げてしまった。一人の若者が、素肌に亜麻布をまとってイエスについて来ていた。人々が捕らえようとすると、亜麻布を捨てて裸で逃げてしまった。人々は、イエスを大祭司のところへ連れて行った。祭司長、長老、律法学者たちが皆、集まって来た。ペトロは遠く離れてイエスに従い、大祭司の屋敷の中庭まで入って、下役たちと一緒に座って、火にあたっていた。祭司長たちと最高法院の全員は、死刑にするためイエスにとって不利な証言を求めたが、得られなかった。多くの者がイエスに不利な偽証をしたが、その証言は食い違っていたからである。すると、数人の者が立ち上がって、イエスに不利な偽証をした。「この男が、『わたしは人間の手で造ったこの神殿を打ち倒し、三日あれば、手で造らない別の神殿を建ててみせる』と言うのを、わたしたちは聞きました。」しかし、この場合も、彼らの証言は食い違った。そこで、大祭司は立ち上がり、真ん中に進み出て、イエスに尋ねた。「何も答えないのか、この者たちがお前に不利な証言をしているが、どうなのか。」しかし、イエスは黙り続け何もお答えにならなかった。そこで、重ねて大祭司は尋ね、「お前はほむべき方の子、メシアなのか」と言った。イエスは言われた。「そうです。あなたたちは、人の子が全能の神の右に座り、天の雲に囲まれて来るのを見る。」大祭司は、衣を引き裂きながら言った。「これでもまだ証人が必要だろうか。諸君は冒瀆の言葉を聞いた。どう考えるか。」一同は、死刑にすべきだと決議した。それから、ある者はイエスに唾を吐きかけ、目隠しをしてこぶしで殴りつけ、「言い当ててみろ」と言い始めた。また、下役たちは、イエスを平手で打った。ペトロが下の中庭にいたとき、大祭司に仕える女中の一人が来て、ペトロが火にあたっているのを目にすると、じっと見つめて言った。「あなたも、あのナザレのイエスと一緒にいた。」しかし、ペトロは打ち消して、「あなたが何のことを言っているのか、わたしには分からないし、見当もつかない」と言った。そして、出口の方へ出て行くと、鶏が鳴いた。女中はペトロを見て、周りの人々に、「この人は、あの人たちの仲間です」とまた言いだした。ペトロは、再び打ち消した。しばらくして、今度は、居合わせた人々がペトロに言った。「確かに、お前はあの連中の仲間だ。ガリラヤの者だから。」すると、ペトロは呪いの言葉さえ口にしながら、「あなたがたの言っているそんな人は知らない」と誓い始めた。するとすぐ、鶏が再び鳴いた。ペトロは、「鶏が二度鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」とイエスが言われた言葉を思い出して、いきなり泣きだした。
Delete夜が明けるとすぐ、祭司長たちは、長老や律法学者たちと共に、つまり最高法院全体で相談した後、イエスを縛って引いて行き、ピラトに渡した。ピラトがイエスに、「お前がユダヤ人の王なのか」と尋問すると、イエスは、「それは、あなたが言っていることです」と答えられた。そこで祭司長たちが、いろいろとイエスを訴えた。ピラトが再び尋問した。「何も答えないのか。彼らがあのようにお前を訴えているのに。」しかし、イエスがもはや何もお答えにならなかったので、ピラトは不思議に思った。ところで、祭りの度ごとに、ピラトは人々が願い出る囚人を一人釈放していた。さて、暴動のとき人殺しをして投獄されていた暴徒たちの中に、バラバという男がいた。群衆が押しかけて来て、いつものようにしてほしいと要求し始めた。そこで、ピラトは、「あのユダヤ人の王を釈放してほしいのか」と言った。祭司長たちがイエスを引き渡したのは、ねたみのためだと分かっていたからである。祭司長たちは、バラバの方を釈放してもらうように群衆を扇動した。そこで、ピラトは改めて、「それでは、ユダヤ人の王とお前たちが言っているあの者は、どうしてほしいのか」と言った。群衆はまた叫んだ。「十字架につけろ。」ピラトは言った。「いったいどんな悪事を働いたというのか。」群衆はますます激しく、「十字架につけろ」と叫び立てた。ピラトは群衆を満足させようと思って、バラバを釈放した。そして、イエスを鞭打ってから、十字架につけるために引き渡した。兵士たちは、官邸、すなわち総督官邸の中に、イエスを引いて行き、部隊の全員を呼び集めた。そして、イエスに紫の服を着せ、茨の冠を編んでかぶらせ、「ユダヤ人の王、万歳」と言って敬礼し始めた。また何度も、葦の棒で頭をたたき、唾を吐きかけ、ひざまずいて拝んだりした。このようにイエスを侮辱したあげく、紫の服を脱がせて元の服を着せた。そして、十字架につけるために外へ引き出した。そこへ、アレクサンドロとルフォスとの父でシモンというキレネ人が、田舎から出て来て通りかかったので、兵士たちはイエスの十字架を無理に担がせた。そして、イエスをゴルゴタという所――その意味は「されこうべの場所」――に連れて行った。没薬を混ぜたぶどう酒を飲ませようとしたが、イエスはお受けにならなかった。それから、兵士たちはイエスを十字架につけて、その服を分け合った、だれが何を取るかをくじ引きで決めてから。イエスを十字架につけたのは、午前九時であった。罪状書きには、「ユダヤ人の王」と書いてあった。また、イエスと一緒に二人の強盗を、一人は右にもう一人は左に、十字架につけた。†そこを通りかかった人々は、頭を振りながらイエスをののしって言った。「おやおや、神殿を打ち倒し、三日で建てる者、十字架から降りて自分を救ってみろ。」同じように、祭司長たちも律法学者たちと一緒になって、代わる代わるイエスを侮辱して言った。「他人は救ったのに、自分は救えない。メシア、イスラエルの王、今すぐ十字架から降りるがいい。それを見たら、信じてやろう。」一緒に十字架につけられた者たちも、イエスをののしった。昼の十二時になると、全地は暗くなり、それが三時まで続いた。三時にイエスは大声で叫ばれた。「エロイ、エロイ、レマ、サバクタニ。」これは、「わが神、わが神、なぜわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味である。そばに居合わせた人々のうちには、これを聞いて、「そら、エリヤを呼んでいる」と言う者がいた。ある者が走り寄り、海綿に酸いぶどう酒を含ませて葦の棒に付け、「待て、エリヤが彼を降ろしに来るかどうか、見ていよう」と言いながら、イエスに飲ませようとした。しかし、イエスは大声を出して息を引き取られた。すると、神殿の垂れ幕が上から下まで真っ二つに裂けた。百人隊長がイエスの方を向いて、そばに立っていた。そして、イエスがこのように息を引き取られたのを見て、「本当に、この人は神の子だった」と言った。また、婦人たちも遠くから見守っていた。その中には、マグダラのマリア、小ヤコブとヨセの母マリア、そしてサロメがいた。この婦人たちは、イエスがガリラヤにおられたとき、イエスに従って来て世話をしていた人々である。なおそのほかにも、イエスと共にエルサレムへ上って来た婦人たちが大勢いた。既に夕方になった。その日は準備の日、すなわち安息日の前日であったので、アリマタヤ出身で身分の高い議員ヨセフが来て、勇気を出してピラトのところへ行き、イエスの遺体を渡してくれるようにと願い出た。この人も神の国を待ち望んでいたのである。ピラトは、イエスがもう死んでしまったのかと不思議に思い、百人隊長を呼び寄せて、既に死んだかどうかを尋ねた。そして、百人隊長に確かめたうえ、遺体をヨセフに下げ渡した。ヨセフは亜麻布を買い、イエスを十字架から降ろしてその布で巻き、岩を掘って作った墓の中に納め、墓の入り口には石を転がしておいた。マグダラのマリアとヨセの母マリアとは、イエスの遺体を納めた場所を見つめていた。

Quando si avvicinarono a Gerusalemme, verso Bètfage e Betània, presso il monte degli Ulivi, mandò due dei suoi discepoli e disse loro: “Andate nel villaggio che vi sta di fronte, e subito entrando in esso troverete un asinello legato, sul quale nessuno è mai salito. Scioglietelo e conducetelo. E se qualcuno vi dirà: ‘Perché fate questo?’ rispondete: Il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma lo rimanderà qui subito.” Andarono e trovarono un asinello legato vicino a una porta, fuori sulla strada, e lo sciolsero. E alcuni dei presenti però dissero loro: “Che cosa fate, sciogliendo questo asinello?” Ed essi risposero come aveva detto loro il Signore. E li lasciarono fare. Essi condussero l'asinello da Gesù, e vi gettarono sopra i loro mantelli, ed egli vi montò sopra. E molti stendevano i propri mantelli sulla strada e altri delle fronde, che avevano tagliate dai campi. Quelli poi che andavano innanzi, e quelli che venivano dietro gridavano: Osanna! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore! Benedetto il regno che viene, del nostro padre Davide! Osanna nel più alto dei cieli!

Una lettura dal libro del profeta Isaia.
Il Signore Dio mi ha dato una lingua da iniziati, perché io sappia indirizzare allo sfiduciato una parola. Ogni mattina fa attento il mio orecchio perché io ascolti come gli iniziati. Il Signore Dio mi ha aperto l'orecchio e io non ho opposto resistenza, non mi sono tirato indietro. Ho presentato il dorso ai flagellatori, la guancia a coloro che mi strappavano la barba; non ho sottratto la faccia agli insulti e agli sputi. Il Signore Dio mi assiste, per questo non resto confuso, per questo rendo la mia faccia dura come pietra, sapendo di non restare deluso.
Salmo responsoriale (Salmi 22) (Versi 8–9, 17–20 e 23–24)
La risposta è: Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?

Il quale, pur essendo di natura divina, non considerò un tesoro geloso la sua uguaglianza con Dio; ma spogliò se stesso, assumendo la condizione di servo e divenendo simile agli uomini; apparso in forma umana, umiliò se stesso facendosi obbediente fino alla morte e alla morte di croce. Per questo Dio l'ha esaltato e gli ha dato il nome che è al di sopra di ogni altro nome; perché nel nome di Gesù ogni ginocchio si pieghi nei cieli, sulla terra e sotto terra; e ogni lingua proclami che Gesù Cristo è il Signore, a gloria di Dio Padre.

Mancavano intanto due giorni alla Pasqua e agli Azzimi e i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di impadronirsi di lui con inganno, per ucciderlo. Dicevano infatti: “Non durante la festa, perché non succeda un tumulto di popolo.” Gesù si trovava a Betània nella casa di Simone il lebbroso. Mentre stava a mensa, giunse una donna con un vasetto di alabastro, pieno di olio profumato di nardo genuino di gran valore; ruppe il vasetto di alabastro e versò l'unguento sul suo capo. Ci furono alcuni che si sdegnarono fra di loro: “Perché tutto questo spreco di olio profumato? Si poteva benissimo vendere quest'olio a più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri!” Ed erano infuriati contro di lei. Allora Gesù disse: “Lasciatela stare; perché le date fastidio? Ella ha compiuto verso di me un'opera buona; i poveri infatti li avete sempre con voi e potete beneficarli quando volete, me invece non mi avete sempre. Essa ha fatto ciò ch'era in suo potere, ungendo in anticipo il mio corpo per la sepoltura. In verità vi dico che dovunque, in tutto il mondo, sarà annunziato il vangelo, si racconterà pure in suo ricordo ciò che ella ha fatto.” Allora Giuda Iscariota, uno dei Dodici, si recò dai sommi sacerdoti, per consegnare loro Gesù. Quelli all'udirlo si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli denaro. Ed egli cercava l'occasione opportuna per consegnarlo. Il primo giorno degli Azzimi, quando si immolava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: “Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?” Allora mandò due dei suoi discepoli dicendo loro: “Andate in città e vi verrà incontro un uomo con una brocca d'acqua; seguitelo e là dove entrerà dite al padrone di casa: Il Maestro dice: Dov'è la mia stanza, perché io vi possa mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli? Egli vi mostrerà al piano superiore una grande sala con i tappeti, gia pronta; là preparate per noi.” I discepoli andarono e, entrati in città, trovarono come aveva detto loro e prepararono per la Pasqua. Venuta la sera, egli giunse con i Dodici. Ora, mentre erano a mensa e mangiavano, Gesù disse: “In verità vi dico, uno di voi, colui che mangia con me, mi tradirà.” Allora cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l'altro: “Sono forse io?” Ed egli disse loro: “Uno dei Dodici, colui che intinge con me nel piatto. Il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come sta scritto di lui, ma guai a quell'uomo dal quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito! Bene per quell'uomo se non fosse mai nato!”
Mentre mangiavano prese il pane e, pronunziata la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede loro, dicendo: “Prendete, questo è il mio corpo.” Poi prese il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro e ne bevvero tutti. E disse: “Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue dell'alleanza versato per molti. In verità vi dico che io non berrò più del frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio.” E dopo aver cantato l'inno, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi. Gesù disse loro: “Tutti rimarrete scandalizzati, poiché sta scritto: Percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse. Ma, dopo la mia risurrezione, vi precederò in Galilea.” Allora Pietro gli disse: “Anche se tutti saranno scandalizzati, io non lo sarò.” Gesù gli disse: “In verità ti dico: proprio tu oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte.” Ma egli, con grande insistenza, diceva: “Se anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò.” Lo stesso dicevano anche tutti gli altri. Giunsero intanto a un podere chiamato Getsèmani, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: “Sedetevi qui, mentre io prego.” Prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a sentire paura e angoscia. Gesù disse loro: “La mia anima è triste fino alla morte. Restate qui e vegliate.” Poi, andato un pò innanzi, si gettò a terra e pregava che, se fosse possibile, passasse da lui quell'ora. E diceva: “Abbà, Padre! Tutto è possibile a te, allontana da me questo calice! Però non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che vuoi tu.” Tornato indietro, li trovò addormentati e disse a Pietro: “Simone, dormi? Non sei riuscito a vegliare un'ora sola? Vegliate e pregate per non entrare in tentazione; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole.” Allontanatosi di nuovo, pregava dicendo le medesime parole. Ritornato li trovò addormentati, perché i loro occhi si erano appesantiti, e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli. Venne la terza volta e disse loro: “Dormite ormai e riposatevi! Basta, è venuta l'ora: ecco, il Figlio dell'uomo viene consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori. Alzatevi, andiamo! Ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino.”

Chi lo tradiva aveva dato loro questo segno: “Quello che bacerò, è lui; arrestatelo e conducetelo via sotto buona scorta.” Allora gli si accostò dicendo: “Rabbì” e lo baciò. Essi gli misero addosso le mani e lo arrestarono. Uno dei presenti, estratta la spada, colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio. Allora Gesù disse loro: “Come contro un brigante, con spade e bastoni siete venuti a prendermi. Ogni giorno ero in mezzo a voi a insegnare nel tempio, e non mi avete arrestato. Si adempiano dunque le Scritture!” Tutti allora, abbandonandolo, fuggirono. Un giovanetto però lo seguiva, rivestito soltanto di un lenzuolo, e lo fermarono. Ma egli, lasciato il lenzuolo, fuggì via nudo. Allora condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, e là si riunirono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi. Pietro lo aveva seguito da lontano, fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote; e se ne stava seduto tra i servi, scaldandosi al fuoco. Intanto i capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano una testimonianza contro Gesù per metterlo a morte, ma non la trovavano. Molti infatti attestavano il falso contro di lui e così le loro testimonianze non erano concordi. Ma alcuni si alzarono per testimoniare il falso contro di lui, dicendo: “Noi lo abbiamo udito mentre diceva: Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani d'uomo e in tre giorni ne edificherò un altro non fatto da mani d'uomo.” Ma nemmeno su questo punto la loro testimonianza era concorde. Allora il sommo sacerdote, levatosi in mezzo all'assemblea, interrogò Gesù dicendo: “Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?” Ma egli taceva e non rispondeva nulla. Di nuovo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò dicendogli: “Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio benedetto?” Gesù rispose: “Io lo sono! E vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire con le nubi del cielo.” Allora il sommo sacerdote, stracciandosi le vesti, disse: “Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Avete udito la bestemmia; che ve ne pare?” Tutti sentenziarono che era reo di morte. Allora alcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a coprirgli il volto, a schiaffeggiarlo e a dirgli: “Indovina.” I servi intanto lo percuotevano. Mentre Pietro era giù nel cortile, venne una serva del sommo sacerdote e, vedendo Pietro che stava a scaldarsi, lo fissò e gli disse: “Anche tu eri con il Nazareno, con Gesù.” Ma egli negò: “Non so e non capisco quello che vuoi dire.” Uscì quindi fuori del cortile e il gallo cantò. E la serva, vedendolo, ricominciò a dire ai presenti: “Costui è di quelli.” Ma egli negò di nuovo. Dopo un poco i presenti dissero di nuovo a Pietro: “Tu sei certo di quelli, perché sei Galileo.” Ma egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: “Non conosco quell'uomo che voi dite.” Per la seconda volta un gallo cantò. Allora Pietro si ricordò di quella parola che Gesù gli aveva detto: “Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai per tre volte.” E scoppiò in pianto.
DeleteAl mattino i sommi sacerdoti, con gli anziani, gli scribi e tutto il sinedrio, dopo aver tenuto consiglio, misero in catene Gesù, lo condussero e lo consegnarono a Pilato. Allora Pilato prese a interrogarlo: “Sei tu il re dei Giudei?” Ed egli rispose: “Tu lo dici.” I sommi sacerdoti frattanto gli muovevano molte accuse. Pilato lo interrogò di nuovo: “Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano!” Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla, sicché Pilato ne restò meravigliato. Per la festa egli era solito rilasciare un carcerato a loro richiesta. Un tale chiamato Barabba si trovava in carcere insieme ai ribelli che nel tumulto avevano commesso un omicidio. La folla, accorsa, cominciò a chiedere ciò che sempre egli le concedeva. Allora Pilato rispose loro: “Volete che vi rilasci il re dei Giudei?” Sapeva infatti che i sommi sacerdoti glielo avevano consegnato per invidia. Ma i sommi sacerdoti sobillarono la folla perché egli rilasciasse loro piuttosto Barabba. Pilato replicò: “Che farò dunque di quello che voi chiamate il re dei Giudei?” Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: “Crocifiggilo!” Ma Pilato diceva loro: “Che male ha fatto?” Allora essi gridarono più forte: “Crocifiggilo!” E Pilato, volendo dar soddisfazione alla moltitudine, rilasciò loro Barabba e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso. Allora i soldati lo condussero dentro il cortile, cioè nel pretorio, e convocarono tutta la coorte. Lo rivestirono di porpora e, dopo aver intrecciato una corona di spine, gliela misero sul capo. Cominciarono poi a salutarlo: “Salve, re dei Giudei!” E gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, gli sputavano addosso e, piegando le ginocchia, si prostravano a lui. Dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora e gli rimisero le sue vesti, poi lo condussero fuori per crocifiggerlo. Allora costrinsero un tale che passava, un certo Simone di Cirene che veniva dalla campagna, padre di Alessandro e Rufo, a portare la croce. Condussero dunque Gesù al luogo del Gòlgota, che significa luogo del cranio, e gli offrirono vino mescolato con mirra, ma egli non ne prese. Poi lo crocifissero e si divisero le sue vesti, tirando a sorte su di esse quello che ciascuno dovesse prendere. Erano le nove del mattino quando lo crocifissero. E l'iscrizione con il motivo della condanna diceva: Il re dei Giudei. Con lui crocifissero anche due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e uno alla sinistra. I passanti lo insultavano e, scuotendo il capo, esclamavano: “Ehi, tu che distruggi il tempio e lo riedifichi in tre giorni, salva te stesso scendendo dalla croce!” Ugualmente anche i sommi sacerdoti con gli scribi, facendosi beffe di lui, dicevano: “Ha salvato altri, non può salvare se stesso! Il Cristo, il re d'Israele, scenda ora dalla croce, perché vediamo e crediamo.” E anche quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui lo insultavano. Venuto mezzogiorno, si fece buio su tutta la terra, fino alle tre del pomeriggio. Alle tre Gesù gridò con voce forte: “Eloì, Eloì, lemà sabactàni?”, che significa: Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato? Alcuni dei presenti, udito ciò, dicevano: “Ecco, chiama Elia!” Uno corse a inzuppare di aceto una spugna e, postala su una canna, gli dava da bere, dicendo: “Aspettate, vediamo se viene Elia a toglierlo dalla croce.” Ma Gesù, dando un forte grido, spirò.
DeleteIl velo del tempio si squarciò in due, dall'alto in basso. Allora il centurione che gli stava di fronte, vistolo spirare in quel modo, disse: “Veramente quest'uomo era Figlio di Dio!” C'erano anche alcune donne, che stavano ad osservare da lontano, tra le quali Maria di Màgdala, Maria madre di Giacomo il minore e di ioses, e Salome, che lo seguivano e servivano quando era ancora in Galilea, e molte altre che erano salite con lui a Gerusalemme. Sopraggiunta ormai la sera, poiché era la Parascève, cioè la vigilia del sabato, Giuseppe d'Arimatèa, membro autorevole del sinedrio, che aspettava anche lui il regno di Dio, andò coraggiosamente da Pilato per chiedere il corpo di Gesù. Pilato si meravigliò che fosse gia morto e, chiamato il centurione, lo interrogò se fosse morto da tempo. Informato dal centurione, concesse la salma a Giuseppe. Egli allora, comprato un lenzuolo, lo calò giù dalla croce e, avvoltolo nel lenzuolo, lo depose in un sepolcro scavato nella roccia. Poi fece rotolare un masso contro l'entrata del sepolcro. Intanto Maria di Màgdala e Maria madre di Ioses stavano ad osservare dove veniva deposto.
