First reading (1 Kings 3: 5 and 7–12)
A reading from the first book of Kings.
The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern these vast people of yours?” The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request. So God said to him: “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”
Second reading (Romans 8: 28–30)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.
Gospel (Matthew 13: 44–52)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

Second reading (Romans 8: 28–30)

Brothers and sisters: We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him, whom he has called according to his plan. Those whom he knew beforehand, he has also predestined to be like his Son, similar to him, so that he may be the First-born among many brothers and sisters. And so, those whom God predestined he called, and those whom he called he makes righteous, and to those whom he makes righteous he will give his Glory.
Gospel (Matthew 13: 44–52)

The one who finds it buries it again; and so happy is he, that he goes and sells everything he has, in order to buy that field. Again the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who is looking for fine pearls. Once he has found a pearl of exceptional quality, he goes away, sells everything he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a big fishing net let down into the sea, in which every kind of fish has been caught. When the net is full, it is dragged ashore. Then they sit down and gather the good fish in buckets, but throw the worthless ones away. That is how it will be at the end of time; the angels will go out to separate the wicked from the just and throw them into the blazing furnace, where they will weep and gnash their teeth." Jesus asked, "Have you understood all these things?" "Yes," they answered. So he stated to them, "You will see that every teacher of the Kingdom is like a householder who can produce from his store things both new and old."

Wonderful are your decrees; therefore I observe them. The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple.

Pero yo soy todavía muy joven y no sé aún actuar. Tu servidor se las tiene que ver con tu pueblo, al que tú mismo elegiste, y es un pueblo tan numeroso que no se lo puede ni calcular ni contar. Concede pues a tu servidor que sepa juzgar a tu pueblo y pueda distinguir entre el bien y el mal. ¿Quién podría en realidad gobernar bien a un pueblo tan importante? Le agradó al Señor el pedido de Salomón, y Dios le dijo: “No has pedido para ti una larga vida, ni la riqueza ni la muerte de tus enemigos, y en cambio me pediste la inteligencia para ejercer la justicia. • Consuélame con tu amor exitoso, como prometiste a tu sirviente. Que llegue hasta mí tu compasión, y viviré porque tu ley es toda mi alegría.
• Por eso amo tus mandamientos y los prefiero al oro más fino. Por eso me guío por tus preceptos y aborrezco todo camino engañoso.
• Tus prescripciones son admirables: por eso las observo. La explicación de tu palabra ilumina y da inteligencia al ignorante.

Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos: El Reino de los Cielos es como un tesoro escondido en un campo. El hombre que lo descubre, lo vuelve a esconder; su alegría es tal, que va a vender todo lo que tiene y compra ese campo. El Reino de los Cielos se parece también a un negociante que se dedicaba a buscar perlas finas; si llega a sus manos una perla de gran valor, se va, vende cuanto tiene y la compra. Aquí tienen otra figura del Reino de los Cielos: una red que se ha echado al mar y que recoge peces de todas clases. Cuando está llena, los pescadores la sacan a la orilla, se sientan, escogen los peces buenos, los echan en canastos y tiran los que no sirven. Así sucederá al fin del mundo: vendrán los ángeles y separarán a los malos de entre los justos, y los arrojarán al horno ardiente. Allí será el llorar y el rechinar de dientes.” Preguntó Jesús: “¿Han entendido ustedes todas estas cosas?” Ellos le respondieron: “Sí.” Entonces Jesús dijo: “Está bien: cuando un maestro en religión ha sido instruido sobre el Reino de los Cielos, se parece a un padre de familia que siempre saca de sus armarios cosas nuevas y viejas.”

Ang Panginoon, aking Diyos, ginawa mo akong hari bilang kahalili ng aking amang si David, kahit ako'y bata pa't walang karanasan. Ngayo'y nasa kalagitnaan ako ng iyong bayang pinili, bayang hindi na mabilang sa dami. Bigyan po ninyo ako ng karunungang kailangan ko sa pamamahala at kakayahang kumilala ng mabuti sa masama. Maka berundinglah ia dengan Yoab, anak Zeruya dan dengan imam Abyatar dan mereka menjadi pengikut dan pembantu Adonia. Tetapi imam Zadok dan Benaya bin Yoyada dan nabi Natan dan Simei dan Rei dan para pahlawan Daud tidak memihak kepada Adonia. Sesudah itu Adonia mempersembahkan domba, lembu dan ternak gemukan sebagai korban dekat batu Zohelet yang ada di samping En-Rogel, lalu mengundang semua saudaranya, anak-anak raja, dan semua orang Yehuda, pegawai-pegawai raja; tetapi nabi Natan dan Benaya dan para pahlawan dan Salomo, adiknya, tidak diundangnya. Lalu berkatalah Natan kepada Batsyeba, ibu Salomo: "Tidakkah engkau mendengar, bahwa Adonia anak Hagit, telah menjadi raja, sedang tuan kita Daud tidak mengetahuinya? Karena itu, baiklah kuberi nasihat kepadamu, supaya engkau dapat menyelamatkan nyawamu dan nyawa anakmu Salomo.

Dan karena mereka tidak merasa perlu untuk mengakui Allah, maka Allah menyerahkan mereka kepada pikiran-pikiran yang terkutuk, sehingga mereka melakukan apa yang tidak pantas: penuh dengan rupa-rupa kelaliman, kejahatan, keserakahan dan kebusukan, penuh dengan dengki, pembunuhan, perselisihan, tipu muslihat dan kefasikan. Mereka adalah pengumpat, pemfitnah, pembenci Allah, kurang ajar, congkak, sombong, pandai dalam kejahatan, tidak taat kepada orang tua.
Bacaan Injil (Matius 13: 44–52)

• Bagianku ialah TUHAN, aku telah berjanji untuk berpegang pada firman-firman-Mu. Taurat yang Kausampaikan adalah baik bagiku, lebih dari pada ribuan keping emas dan perak.
• Biarlah kiranya kasih setia-Mu menjadi penghiburanku, sesuai dengan janji yang Kauucapkan kepada hamba-Mu. Biarlah rahmat-Mu sampai kepadaku, supaya aku hidup, sebab Taurat-Mu adalah kegemaranku.

「神様はわかっているんです。その実を食べたら、善と悪の見分けがついて神様のようになってしまうってことを。」はっと気がつくと、なんと、二人とも裸ではありませんか。急に恥ずかしくなって、とっさにいちじくの葉をつなぎ合わせ、腰の回りを覆いました。その日の夕方のことです。主なる神が園の中を歩いておられる気配がしたので、二人はあわてて木陰に隠れました。神の呼ぶ声が聞こえます。「アダム、なぜ隠れるのだ。」「あなたがおいでになるのに私は裸だったからです。こんな姿はお見せできません。」「裸だということを、いったいだれが教えたのか。あれほど食べるなと言ったあの木から実を取って食べたのか。」「は、はい。でも、あなたが私といっしょにしてくださったこの女がくれたので……。」

私たちは、神を愛し神のご計画のうちを歩んでいる人のためには、その身に起こることはすべて、神が益としてくださることを知っているのです。というのは、神はあらかじめ、ご自分のもとに来る人を知っていて、そのような人々がご自分の御子と同じになるように、最初から定めておられたからです。それは、御子イエスを多くの主を信じる者たちの長子とするためでした。神はあらかじめ選んだ人々を招き、そして彼らの罪を赦し、義（正しい者）と認められた人々には、さらに栄光を与えると約束してくださいました。

神の国は、ある人が畑の中で見つけた宝のようなものです。見つけた人はもう大喜びで、だれにも知らせず、全財産をはたいてその畑を買い、宝を手に入れるに違いありません。また神の国は、良質の真珠を探している宝石商のようなものです。彼はすばらしい価値のある真珠を見つけると、持ち物全部を売り払ってでも、それを手に入れようとするのです。また神の国は、漁師にたとえることもできます。漁師は、いろいろな魚でいっぱいになった網を引き上げると、岸辺に座り込んで網の中の魚をより分けます。食べられるものはかごに入れて、食べられないものは捨てるというふうに。この世の終わりにも、同じようなことが起こります。天使がやって来て、正しい者と悪い者とを区別し、悪い者を火に投げ込むのです。彼らはそこで泣きわめいて、くやしがります。これでわかりましたか。」弟子たちは、「はい」と答えました。そこでイエスは、さらにこう言われました。「ユダヤ人のおきてに通じ、しかも、わたしの弟子でもある人たちは、古くからある聖書の宝と、私が与える新しい宝と、二つの宝を持つことになるのです。」
