First reading (Isaiah 55: 6–9)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.
Second reading (Philippians 1: 20C–24 and 27A)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians.
Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Gospel (Matthew 20: 1–16A)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o'clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.' So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o'clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o'clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' They answered, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You too go into my vineyard.' When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' When those who had started about five o'clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, 'These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.' He said to one of them in reply, 'My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?' Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Second reading (Philippians 1: 20c–24, and 27)

Christ will be exalted through my person, whether I love or die. For to me, to live is Christ, and even death is profitable for me. But if I am to go on living, I shall be able to enjoy fruitful labor. Which shall I choose? So I feel torn between the two. I desire greatly to leave this life and to be with Christ, which will be better by far, but it is necessary for you that I remain in his life. Try, then, to adjust your lives according to the Gospel of Christ. May I see it when I come to you, and if I cannot come, may I at least hear that you stand firm in the same spirit, striving to uphold the faith of the Gospel with one heart.
Gospel (Matthew 20: 1–16)

Jesus stated this to his disciples: "This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A landowner went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay the workers a salary of a silver coin for the day, and sent them to his vineyard. He went out again at about nine in the morning, and seeing others idle in the square, he stated to them: 'You, too, go to my vineyard and I will pay you what is just.' So they went. The owner went out at midday and again at three in the afternoon, and he did the same. Finally he went out at the last working hour — it was the eleventh — and he saw others standing there. So he stated to them: 'Why do you stay idle the whole day?' They answered: 'Because no one has hired us.' The master stated: 'Go and work in my vineyard.' When evening came, the owner of the vineyard stated to his manager: 'Call the workers and pay them their wage, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' Those who had come to work at the eleventh hour turned up and were given a denarius each (a silver coin). When it was the turn of the first, they thought they would receive more. But they, too, received a denarius each. So, on receiving it, they began to grumble against the landowner. They stated: 'These last hardly worked an hour, yet you have treated them the same as us who have endured the day's burden and heat.' The owner stated to one of them: 'Friend, I have not been unjust to you. Did we not agree on a denarius a day? So take what is yours and go. I want to give to the last the same as I gave to you. Do I not have the right to do as I please with my money? Why are you envious when I am kind?' So will it be: the last will be first, the first will be last."

Busquen al Señor ahora que lo pueden encontrar, llámenlo ahora que está cerca. Que el malvado deje sus caminos, y el criminal sus proyectos; vuélvanse al Señor, que tendrá piedad de ellos, a nuestro Dios, que está siempre dispuesto a perdonar. Pues sus proyectos no son los míos, y mis caminos no son los mismos de ustedes, dice el Señor. Así, como el cielo está muy alto por encima de la tierra, así también mis caminos se elevan por encima de sus caminos y mis proyectos son muy superiores a los de ustedes.
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 145) (Versículos 2–3, 8–9 y 17–18)
La respuesta es: El Señor está cerca de aquellos que lo invocan.
• Día tras día te bendeciré, y alabaré tu Nombre sin cesar. ¡Grande es el Señor y muy digno de alabanza: su grandeza es insondable!
• El Señor es bondadoso y compasivo, lento para enojarse y de gran misericordia; el Señor es bueno con todos y tiene compasión de todas sus criaturas.
• El Señor es justo en todos sus caminos y bondadoso en todas sus acciones. El Señor está cerca de aquellos que lo invocan, de aquellos que lo invocan de verdad.
Segunda lectura (Filipenses 1: 20C–24 y 27)

Cristo será glorificado en mi cuerpo. Porque para mí la vida es Cristo, y la muerte, una ganancia. Pero si la vida en este cuerpo me permite seguir trabajando fructuosamente, ya no sé qué elegir. Me siento urgido de ambas partes: deseo irme para estar con Cristo, porque es mucho mejor, pero por el bien de ustedes es preferible que permanezca en este cuerpo. Solamente les pido que se comporten como dignos seguidores del Evangelio de Cristo. De esta manera, sea que yo vaya a verlos o que oiga hablar de ustedes estando ausente, sabré que perseveran en un mismo espíritu, luchando de común acuerdo y con un solo corazón por la fe del Evangelio.

Salió de nuevo hacia las nueve de la mañana, y al ver en la plaza a otros que estaban desocupados, les dijo: ‘Vayan ustedes también a mi viña y les pagaré lo que sea justo.’ Y fueron a trabajar. Salió otra vez al mediodía, y luego a las tres de la tarde, e hizo lo mismo. Ya era la última hora del día, la undécima, cuando salió otra vez y vio a otros que estaban allí parados. Les preguntó: ‘¿Por qué se han quedado todo el día sin hacer nada?’ Contestaron ellos: ‘Porque nadie nos ha contratado.’ Y les dijo: ‘Vayan también ustedes a trabajar en mi viña.’ Al anochecer, dijo el dueño de la viña a su mayordomo: ‘Llama a los trabajadores y págales su jornal, empezando por los últimos y terminando por los primeros.’ Vinieron los que habían ido a trabajar a última hora, y cada uno recibió un denario (una moneda de plata). Cuando llegó el turno a los primeros, pensaron que iban a recibir más, pero también recibieron cada uno un denario. Por eso, mientras se les pagaba, protestaban contra el propietario. Decían: ‘Estos últimos apenas trabajaron una hora, y los consideras igual que a nosotros, que hemos aguantado el día entero y soportado lo más pesado del calor.’ El dueño contestó a uno de ellos: ‘Amigo, yo no he sido injusto contigo. ¿No acordamos en un denario al día? Toma lo que te corresponde y márchate. Yo quiero dar al último lo mismo que a ti. ¿No tengo derecho a llevar mis cosas de la manera que quiero? ¿O será porque soy generoso y tú envidioso? Así sucederá: los últimos serán primeros, y los primeros serán últimos.’”

Sila'y dapat manumbalik, at lumapit sa Panginoon upang kahabagan; at mula sa Diyos, makakamit nila ang kapatawaran. Ang sabi ng Panginoon, “Ang aking kaisipa'y hindi ninyo kaisipan, ang inyong kaparaanan ay hindi ko kaparaanan. Kaya nga, mga kapatid, pagsikapan ninyong mamuhay nang nararapat ayon sa Magandang Balita ni Cristo. Lumabas na naman siya nang mag-aalas dose ng tanghali at nang mag-aalas tres ng hapon, at ganoon din ang ginawa niya. Carilah TUHAN selama Ia berkenan ditemui; berserulah kepada-Nya selama Ia dekat! Baiklah orang fasik meninggalkan jalannya, dan orang jahat meninggalkan rancangannya; baiklah ia kembali kepada TUHAN, maka Dia akan mengasihaninya, dan kepada Allah kita, sebab Ia memberi pengampunan dengan limpahnya. Sebab rancangan-Ku bukanlah rancanganmu, dan jalanmu bukanlah jalan-Ku, demikianlah firman TUHAN. Seperti tingginya langit dari bumi, demikianlah tingginya jalan-Ku dari jalanmu dan rancangan-Ku dari rancanganmu.

Kristus dengan nyata dimuliakan di dalam tubuhku, baik oleh hidupku, maupun oleh matiku. Karena bagiku hidup adalah Kristus dan mati adalah keuntungan. Tetapi jika aku harus hidup di dunia ini, itu berarti bagiku bekerja memberi buah. Jadi mana yang harus kupilih, aku tidak tahu. Aku didesak dari dua pihak: aku ingin pergi dan diam bersama-sama dengan Kristus — itu memang jauh lebih baik; tetapi lebih perlu untuk tinggal di dunia ini karena kamu. Hanya, hendaklah hidupmu berpadanan dengan Injil Kristus, supaya, apabila aku datang aku melihat, dan apabila aku tidak datang aku mendengar, bahwa kamu teguh berdiri dalam satu roh, dan sehati sejiwa berjuang untuk iman yang timbul dari Berita Injil.

Kira-kira pukul sembilan pagi ia keluar pula dan dilihatnya ada lagi orang-orang lain menganggur di pasar. Katanya kepada mereka: Pergi jugalah kamu ke kebun anggurku dan apa yang pantas akan kuberikan kepadamu. Dan merekapun pergi. Kira-kira pukul dua belas dan pukul tiga petang ia keluar pula dan melakukan sama seperti tadi. Kira-kira pukul lima petang ia keluar lagi dan mendapati orang-orang lain pula, lalu katanya kepada mereka: Mengapa kamu menganggur saja di sini sepanjang hari? Kata mereka kepadanya: Karena tidak ada orang mengupah kami. Katanya kepada mereka: Pergi jugalah kamu ke kebun anggurku. Ketika hari malam tuan itu berkata kepada mandurnya: Panggillah pekerja-pekerja itu dan bayarkan upah mereka, mulai dengan mereka yang masuk terakhir hingga mereka yang masuk terdahulu. Maka datanglah mereka yang mulai bekerja kira-kira pukul lima dan mereka menerima masing-masing satu dinar. Kemudian datanglah mereka yang masuk terdahulu, sangkanya akan mendapat lebih banyak, tetapi merekapun menerima masing-masing satu dinar juga. Ketika mereka menerimanya, mereka bersungut-sungut kepada tuan itu, katanya: Mereka yang masuk terakhir ini hanya bekerja satu jam dan engkau menyamakan mereka dengan kami yang sehari suntuk bekerja berat dan menanggung panas terik matahari. Tetapi tuan itu menjawab seorang dari mereka: Saudara, aku tidak berlaku tidak adil terhadap engkau. Bukankah kita telah sepakat sedinar sehari? Ambillah bagianmu dan pergilah; aku mau memberikan kepada orang yang masuk terakhir ini sama seperti kepadamu. Tidakkah aku bebas mempergunakan milikku menurut kehendak hatiku? Atau iri hatikah engkau, karena aku murah hati? Demikianlah orang yang terakhir akan menjadi yang terdahulu dan yang terdahulu akan menjadi yang terakhir."

見いだすことのできる間に主を探し求めなさい。近くにいる間に主を呼び求めなさい。悪事を捨て、悪いことをしようとする思いを、きっぱりと捨てなさい。主に立ち返るなら、主はあなたをあわれんでくださいます。私たちの神に帰りなさい。神は赦してくださいます。「わたしの計画はあなたがたの考える計画とは違い、わたしの思いはあなたがたの思いと同じではない。天が地より高いように、わたしの道はあなたがたの道より高く、わたしの思いはあなたがたの思いより高い。
第二読み物（ピリピ人第1章：第20詩–第24詩と第27詩）
この読み物はピリピ人です。
というのも、私はこのような期待と希望とをいだいて生きているのです。すなわち、一つも自分で恥じるようなことはせず、かえって、この試練の時も、いつものように大胆に語り、また、生きるにしても死ぬにしても、いつもキリストのすばらしさを身をもって現したいと願っているのです。私にとって生きることは、キリストのために良い機会を得たことを意味し、死ぬことは、さらにすばらしいことを意味するからです。しかし、生きているからこそ、人々をキリストに導く機会に恵まれているとすれば、生と死のどちらがよいのか、私にはわかりません。ある時は生きていたいと思い、また、ある時は反対の気持ちになります。というのも、私にとって、この世を去ってキリストのそばにいることほど願わしいことはないからです。そのほうが、地上にとどまっているより、どれだけ幸せかわかりません。しかし、地上では、もっとあなたがたの役に立てることも事実です。

天国を、こんなふうにたとえることもできます。農園の経営者が、果樹園で働く日雇い労働者を雇おうと、朝早く出かけて行きました。そして、一日一デナリの約束で、彼らを果樹園へ行かせました。二、三時間後、また職を求める人々の集まる場所へ行ってみると、仕事にあぶれた者たちがたむろしています。それで、その人たちにも、夕方には適当な賃金を払うという約束で、果樹園へ行かせました。昼ごろと午後の三時ごろにも、同じようにしました。夕方も五時近くに、もう一度出かけてみると、まだぶらぶらしている者たちがいます。『どうして一日中、何もしないでここにいるのか』と尋ねると、『仕事がないのです』と答えたので、農園主は言いました。『それなら今すぐ行って、私の農園でみんなといっしょに働きなさい。』終業の時刻になり、農園主は監督に言いつけて、労働者たちを呼び集めました。そして、最後に雇った男たちから順に日当を支払いました。五時に雇われた男たちの日当はなんと一人一デナリです。それで、早くから仕事にかかっていた男たちは、もっとたくさんもらえるだろうと思いました。ところが、彼らの日当もやはり一デナリだったのです。当てがはずれた者たちはみな、農園主に文句を言いました。『あの人たちは、たった一時間働いただけなのです。なのに、この炎天下、一日中働いた自分たちと同じに払ってやるんですか。』ところが、農園主はその一人に答えました。『いいかね。私はあなたに何も悪いことはしていない。あなたは一日一デナリで働くことを承知したはずだ。文句を言わずに、それを持って帰りなさい。私はだれにでも分け隔てなく払ってやりたいのだ。自分の金をどう使おうと自由だろう。私がほかの者たちに親切なので、あなたは腹を立てているのか。』このように、最後の者が最初になり、最初の者が最後になるのです。」

そして、どんなことにも恥をかかず、これまでのように今も、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストが公然とあがめられるようにと切に願い、希望しています。わたしにとって、生きるとはキリストであり、死ぬことは利益なのです。けれども、肉において生き続ければ、実り多い働きができ、どちらを選ぶべきか、わたしには分かりません。この二つのことの間で、板挟みの状態です。一方では、この世を去って、キリストと共にいたいと熱望しており、この方がはるかに望ましい。だが他方では、肉にとどまる方が、あなたがたのためにもっと必要です。ひたすらキリストの福音にふさわしい生活を送りなさい。そうすれば、そちらに行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、離れているにしても、わたしは次のことを聞けるでしょう。あなたがたは一つの霊によってしっかり立ち、心を合わせて福音の信仰のために共に戦っています。

「天の国は次のようにたとえられる。ある家の主人が、ぶどう園で働く労働者を雇うために、夜明けに出かけて行った。主人は、一日につき一デナリオンの約束で、労働者をぶどう園に送った。また、九時ごろ行ってみると、何もしないで広場に立っている人々がいたので、『あなたたちもぶどう園に行きなさい。ふさわしい賃金を払ってやろう』と言った。それで、その人たちは出かけて行った。主人は、十二時ごろと三時ごろにまた出て行き、同じようにした。五時ごろにも行ってみると、ほかの人々が立っていたので、『なぜ、何もしないで一日中ここに立っているのか』と尋ねると、彼らは、『だれも雇ってくれないのです』と言った。主人は彼らに、『あなたたちもぶどう園に行きなさい』と言った。夕方になって、ぶどう園の主人は監督に、『労働者たちを呼んで、最後に来た者から始めて、最初に来た者まで順に賃金を払ってやりなさい』と言った。そこで、五時ごろに雇われた人たちが来て、一デナリオンずつ受け取った。最初に雇われた人たちが来て、もっと多くもらえるだろうと思っていた。しかし、彼らも一デナリオンずつであった。それで、受け取ると、主人に不平を言った。『最後に来たこの連中は、一時間しか働きませんでした。まる一日、暑い中を辛抱して働いたわたしたちと、この連中とを同じ扱いにするとは。』主人はその一人に答えた。『友よ、あなたに不当なことはしていない。あなたはわたしと一デナリオンの約束をしたではないか。自分の分を受け取って帰りなさい。わたしはこの最後の者にも、あなたと同じように支払ってやりたいのだ。自分のものを自分のしたいようにしては、いけないか。それとも、わたしの気前のよさをねたむのか。』このように、後にいる者が先になり、先にいる者が後になる。」
