New American Bible readings
First reading (Jeremiah 38: 4–6 and 8–10)
A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.
In those days, the princes said to the king: "Jeremiah ought to be put to death; he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin." King Zedekiah answered: "He is in your power"; for the king could do nothing with them. And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud. Ebed-melech, a court official, went there from the palace and said to him: "My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city." Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die.
Second reading (Hebrews 12: 1–4)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
Gospel (Luke 12: 49–53)

Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

The officials told King Zedekiah, "This man should be put to death, because he is weakening the will of the fighting men and the people left the city. In fact he is not out to save the people but to do harm." King Zedekiah stated, "His life is in your hands for the king has no power against you." So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchiah the king's son, in the Guards' Court. They lowered him by means of ropes, There was no water in the cistern but only mud and Jeremiah sank into the mud. Ebedmelech went and spoke to him, "My lord king! These men have acted wickedly in all they did to Jeremiah the prophet. They threw him into the cistern where he will die." So the king ordered Ebedmelech the Ethiopian: "Take three men with you from here and draw Jeremiah the prophet out from the cistern before he dies."
Second reading (Hebrews 12: 1–4)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
What a cloud of innumerable witnesses surround us! So let us be rid of every encumbrance, and especially of sin, to persevere in running the race marked out before us. Let us look to Jesus the founder of our faith, who will bring it to completion. For the sake of the joy reserved for him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and then sat at the right of the throne of God. Think of Jesus who suffered so many contradictions from evil people, and you will not be discouraged or grow weary. Have you already shed your blood in the struggle against sin?

Though I am afflicted and poor, yet the LORD thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, hold not back!

Y aquellos jefes dijeron al rey: “Este hombre debe morir, porque sus discursos desalientan a los combatientes que quedan en esta ciudad y aun a todo el pueblo. Es evidente que este hombre no busca nuestro bien, sino que trata de perdernos.” Sedecías respondió: “Ahí lo tienen, pues el rey nada puede contra ustedes.” Entonces se apoderaron de Jeremías y lo echaron al pozo de Melquías, hijo del rey, situado en el patio de la guardia, bajándolo con cuerdas. En el pozo no había agua, sino puro fango, y Jeremías se hundió en el fango. El etíope Abdemalec salió del palacio y fue al encuentro del rey, que estaba sentado a la Puerta de Benjamín y le habló en estos términos: “¡Oh, mi señor!, esos hombres han procedido muy mal con el profeta Jeremías. Lo han echado en el pozo, donde va a morir.” Entonces el rey ordenó al etíope: “Toma tres hombres y saca a Jeremías del pozo antes de que muera.”
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 40) (Versículos 2–4 y 18)

• Esperé confiadamente en el Señor: él se inclinó hacia mí y escuchó mi clamor.

Segunda lectura (Hebreos 12: 1–4)

Innumerables son estos testigos que nos envuelven como una nube. Depongamos, pues, toda carga inútil, y en especial las amarras del pecado, para correr hasta el final la prueba que nos espera, fijos los ojos en Jesús, que organiza esta carrera de la fe y la premia al final. Él escogió la cruz en vez de la felicidad que se le ofrecía; no tuvo miedo a la humillación, y ahora está sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios. Piensen en Jesús, que sufrió tantas contradicciones de parte de gente mala, y no les faltarán las fuerzas ni el ánimo. Ustedes se enfrentan con el mal, pero todavía no han tenido que resistir hasta la sangre.
Evangelio (Lucas 12: 49–53)

Es evidente que no busca el bienestar del pueblo, sino su perdición". Respondió el rey Sedecías: "Lo tienen ya en sus manos y el rey no puede nada contra ustedes". Entonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías y, descolgándolo con cuerdas, lo echaron en el pozo del príncipe Melquías, situado en el patio de la prisión. En el pozo no había agua, sino lodo, y Jeremías quedó hundido en el lodo. Ebed-Mélek, el etíope, oficial de palacio, fue a ver al rey y le dijo: "Señor, está mal hecho lo que estos hombres hicieron con Jeremías, arrojándolo al pozo, donde va a morir de hambre". Entonces el rey ordenó a Ebed-Mélek: "Toma treinta hombres contigo y saca del pozo a Jeremías, antes de que muera".

— Esperé en el Señor con gran confianza; él se inclinó hacia mí y escuchó mis plegarias.

Hermanos: Rodeados, como estamos, por la multitud de antepasados nuestros, que dieron prueba de su fe, dejemos todo lo que nos estorba; librémonos del pecado que nos ata, para correr con perseverancia la carrera que tenemos por delante, fija la mirada en Jesús, autor y consumador de nuestra fe. Él, en vista del gozo que se le proponía, aceptó la cruz, sin temer su ignominia, y por eso está sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios. Mediten, pues, en el ejemplo de aquel que quiso sufrir tanta oposición de parte de los pecadores, y no se cansen ni pierdan el ánimo, porque todavía no han llegado a derramar su sangre en la lucha contra el pecado.

Kaya nga, dahil napapaligiran tayo ng napakaraming saksi, tanggalin natin ang anumang balakid at ang kasalanang kumakapit sa atin. Buong tiyaga tayong tumakbo sa takbuhing nasa ating harapan. Ituon natin ang ating paningin kay Jesus. Sa kanya nakasalalay ang ating pananampalataya mula simula hanggang katapusan. Dahil sa kagalakang naghihintay sa kanya, hindi niya inalintana ang kahihiyan ng pagkamatay sa krus, at siya ngayo'y nakaupo sa kanan ng trono ng Diyos. Isip-isipin ninyo kung gaano ang tiniis niyang pag-uusig sa kamay ng mga makasalanan, upang hindi kayo manlupaypay o panghinaan ng loob. Hindi pa humahantong sa pagdanak ng dugo ang pakikipaglaban ninyo sa kasalanan.

Sungguh, orang ini tidak mengusahakan kesejahteraan untuk bangsa ini, melainkan kemalangan." Raja Zedekia menjawab: "Baiklah, ia ada dalam kuasamu! Sebab raja tidak dapat berbuat apa-apa menentang kamu!" Maka mereka mengambil Yeremia dan memasukkannya ke dalam perigi milik pangeran Malkia yang ada di pelataran penjagaan itu; mereka menurunkan Yeremia dengan tali. Di perigi itu tidak ada air, hanya lumpur, lalu terperosoklah Yeremia ke dalam lumpur itu. Maka keluarlah Ebed-Melekh dari istana raja itu, lalu berkata kepada raja: "Ya tuanku raja, perbuatan orang-orang ini jahat dalam segala apa yang mereka lakukan terhadap nabi Yeremia, yakni memasukkan dia ke dalam perigi; ia akan mati kelaparan di tempat itu! Sebab tidak ada lagi roti di kota." Lalu raja memberi perintah kepada Ebed-Melekh, orang Etiopia itu, katanya: "Bawalah tiga orang dari sini dan angkatlah nabi Yeremia dari perigi itu sebelum ia mati!"

Karena kita mempunyai banyak saksi, bagaikan awan yang mengelilingi kita, marilah kita menanggalkan semua beban dan dosa yang begitu merintangi kita, dan berlomba dengan tekun dalam perlombaan yang diwajibkan bagi kita. Marilah kita melakukannya dengan mata yang tertuju kepada Yesus, yang memimpin kita dalam iman, dan yang membawa iman kita itu kepada kesempurnaan, yang dengan mengabaikan kehinaan tekun memikul salib ganti sukacita yang disediakan bagi Dia, yang sekarang duduk di sebelah kanan takhta Allah. Ingatlah selalu akan Dia, yang tekun menanggung bantahan yang sehebat itu terhadap diri-Nya dari pihak orang-orang berdosa, supaya jangan kamu menjadi lemah dan putus asa. Karena mulai dari sekarang akan ada pertentangan antara lima orang di dalam satu rumah, tiga melawan dua dan dua melawan tiga. Mereka akan saling bertentangan, ayah melawan anaknya laki-laki dan anak laki-laki melawan ayahnya, ibu melawan anaknya perempuan, dan anak perempuan melawan ibunya, ibu mertua melawan menantunya perempuan dan menantu perempuan melawan ibu mertuanya."

これを聞いた四人は王のところへ行き、こう進言しました。「あの男を生かしておいてはいけません。あんなことを言われたら、わずかしか残っていない兵士と民衆の士気は、くじかれてしまいます。あの男は裏切り者なのです。」王は同意しました。「よろしい。おまえたちの好きなようにせよ。私には、おまえたちを止めることはできない。」そこで彼らはエレミヤを牢から連れ出し、綱を使って、構内にある空の井戸につり降ろしました。この井戸は王子マルキヤのものでした。中に水はありませんでしたが、泥がたっぷりたまっていたので、エレミヤはその中に沈みました。王がさばきの座についているベニヤミンの門に駆けつけました。「王よ。あの四人は、エレミヤを井戸につり降ろすという、悪を行いました。町にはもう、パンはほとんどありません。このままだと、彼は飢え死にします。」すると王は、エベデ・メレクに、三十人を連れて行き、エレミヤが死なないうちに引き上げるようにと命じました。

このように、数えきれないほどの多くの証人たちが、競技場の観覧席で私たちを見つめているのです。だから、うしろへ引き戻そうとする力や、まとわりつく罪をふり捨てて、神の用意された競走を忍耐をもって走り抜こうではありませんか。あなたがたの信仰の指導者であり教師であるイエスから、目を離さないようにしなさい。イエスは後にある喜びを知って、恥辱をものともせず十字架にかかられました。そして今は、神の王座の右に座しておられるのです。罪人たちの恐ろしい反抗を忍ばれたイエスのことを、いつも思っていなさい。あなたがたが気力を失い、弱り果てることがないためです。あなたがたは罪や誘惑と戦っています。けれどもまだ、血を流すほどのきびしい戦いを経験したことはありません。

I capi allora dissero al re: “Si metta a morte questo uomo, appunto perché egli scoraggia i guerrieri che sono rimasti in questa città e scoraggia tutto il popolo dicendo loro simili parole, poiché questo uomo non cerca il benessere del popolo, ma il male.” Il re Sedecìa rispose: “Ecco, egli è nelle vostre mani; il re infatti non ha poteri contro di voi.” Essi allora presero Geremia e lo gettarono nella cisterna di Malchia, principe regale, la quale si trovava nell'atrio della prigione. Calarono Geremia con corde. Nella cisterna non c'era acqua ma fango, e così Geremia affondò nel fango. Ebed-Mèlech uscì dalla reggia e disse al re: “Re mio signore, quegli uomini hanno agito male facendo quanto hanno fatto al profeta Geremia, gettandolo nella cisterna. Egli morirà di fame sul posto, perché non c'è più pane nella città.” Allora il re diede quest'ordine a Ebed-Mèlech l'Etiope: “Prendi con te da qui tre uomini e fà risalire il profeta Geremia dalla cisterna prima che muoia.”
Seconda lettura (Ebrei 12: 1–4)
Una lettura dalla lettera di san Paolo apostolo agli Ebrei.
Anche noi dunque, circondati da un così gran nugolo di testimoni, deposto tutto ciò che è di peso e il peccato che ci assedia, corriamo con perseveranza nella corsa che ci sta davanti, tenendo fisso lo sguardo su Gesù, autore e perfezionatore della fede. Egli in cambio della gioia che gli era posta innanzi, si sottopose alla croce, disprezzando l'ignominia, e si è assiso alla destra del trono di Dio. Pensate attentamente a colui che ha sopportato contro di sé una così grande ostilità dei peccatori, perché non vi stanchiate perdendovi d'animo. Non avete ancora resistito fino al sangue nella vostra lotta contro il peccato.

“Sono venuto a portare il fuoco sulla terra; e come vorrei che fosse gia acceso! C'è un battesimo che devo ricevere; e come sono angosciato, finché non sia compiuto! Pensate che io sia venuto a portare la pace sulla terra? No, vi dico, ma la divisione. D'ora innanzi in una casa di cinque persone si divideranno tre contro due e due contro tre; padre contro figlio e figlio contro padre, madre contro figlia e figlia contro madre, suocera contro nuora e nuora contro suocera.”
