New American Bible readings
First reading (Numbers 21: 4b–9)
A reading from the book of Numbers.
The people’s patience was worn out by the journey; so the people complained against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!” So the Lord sent among the people seraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of the Israelites died. Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned in complaining against the Lord and you. Pray to the Lord to take the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people, and the Lord said to Moses: Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and everyone who has been bitten will look at it and recover. Accordingly, Moses made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever the serpent bit someone, the person looked at the bronze serpent and recovered.
Second reading (Philippians 2: 6–11)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians.
Though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God, something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Gospel (John 3: 13–17)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus said to Nicodemus, "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

There is neither bread nor water here and we are disgusted with this tasteless manna." The Lord then sent fiery serpents against them. They bit the people and many of the Israelites died. Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, speaking against the Lord and against you. Plead with the Lord to take the serpents away." Moses pleaded for the people and the Lord said to him, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a standard; whoever has been bitten and then looks at it shall live." So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a standard. Whenever a man was bitten, he looked towards the bronze serpent and he lived.
Second reading (Philippians 2: 6–11)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians.
Though being divine in nature, he did not claim in fact equality with God, but emptied himself, taking on the nature of a servant, made in human likeness, and in his appearance found as a man. He humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross. That is why God exalted him and gave him the Name which outshines all names, so that at the Name of Jesus all knees should bend in heaven, on earth and among the dead, and all tongues proclaim that Christ Jesus is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Primera lectura (Números 21: 4B–9)

En el camino el pueblo perdió la paciencia y murmuró contra Dios y Moisés: “¿Por qué nos hicieron subir de Egipto para que muramos en el desierto sin pan y sin agua? ¡Ya estamos aburridos de esta comida sin gracia!” Entonces, Dios mandó contra el pueblo serpientes-ardientes. Muchos de los israelitas murieron por sus mordeduras. El pueblo fue a ver a Moisés y le dijo: “Hemos pecado, hemos murmurado contra el Señor y contra ti. Ruega al Señor por nosotros, para que aleje de nosotros las serpientes.” Moisés oró por el pueblo, y el Señor le dijo a Moisés: “Hazte una serpiente-ardiente y colócala en un poste. El que haya sido mordido, al verla, sanará.” Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso en un poste. Cuando alguien era mordido por una serpiente, miraba la serpiente de bronce y se sanaba.

Cristo, siendo Dios, no consideró que debía aferrarse a las prerrogativas de su condición divina, sino que, por el contrario, se anonadó a sí mismo tomando la condición de siervo, y se hizo semejante a los hombres. Así, hecho uno de ellos, se humilló a sí mismo y por obediencia aceptó incluso la muerte, y una muerte de cruz. Por eso Dios lo exaltó sobre todas las cosas y le otorgó el nombre que está sobre todo nombre, para que al nombre de Jesús todos doblen la rodilla en el cielo, en la tierra y en los abismos, y todos reconozcan públicamente que Jesucristo es el Señor, para gloria de Dios Padre.

Sebab di sini tidak ada roti dan tidak ada air, dan akan makanan hambar ini kami telah muak." Lalu TUHAN menyuruh ular-ular tedung ke antara bangsa itu, yang memagut mereka, sehingga banyak dari orang Israel yang mati. Kemudian datanglah bangsa itu mendapatkan Musa dan berkata: "Kami telah berdosa, sebab kami berkata-kata melawan TUHAN dan engkau; berdoalah kepada TUHAN, supaya dijauhkan-Nya ular-ular ini dari pada kami." Lalu Musa berdoa untuk bangsa itu. Yang walaupun dalam rupa Allah, tidak menganggap kesetaraan dengan Allah itu sebagai milik yang harus dipertahankan, melainkan telah mengosongkan diri-Nya sendiri, dan mengambil rupa seorang hamba, dan menjadi sama dengan manusia. Dan dalam keadaan sebagai manusia, Ia telah merendahkan diri-Nya dan taat sampai mati, bahkan sampai mati di kayu salib. Itulah sebabnya Allah sangat meninggikan Dia dan mengaruniakan kepada-Nya nama di atas segala nama, supaya dalam nama Yesus bertekuk lutut segala yang ada di langit dan yang ada di atas bumi dan yang ada di bawah bumi, dan segala lidah mengaku: "Yesus Kristus adalah Tuhan," bagi kemuliaan Allah, Bapa!
Bacaan Injil (Yohanes 3: 13–17)

Tidak ada seorang pun yang telah naik ke surga, selain dari pada Dia yang telah turun dari surga, yaitu Anak Manusia. Dan sama seperti Musa meninggikan ular di padang gurun, demikian juga Anak Manusia harus ditinggikan, supaya setiap orang yang percaya kepada-Nya beroleh hidup yang kekal. Karena begitu besar kasih Allah akan dunia ini, sehingga Ia telah mengaruniakan Anak-Nya yang tunggal, supaya setiap orang yang percaya kepada-Nya tidak binasa, melainkan beroleh hidup yang kekal. Sebab Allah mengutus Anak-Nya ke dalam dunia bukan untuk menghakimi dunia, melainkan untuk menyelamatkannya oleh Dia.

このあと彼らはホル山に帰り、そこから南へ行き、エドムの国をぐるりと回って、紅海へ通じる道に出ました。ところが、途中で我慢できなくなり、また文句を言い始めたのです。不平不満はモーセに集中しました。「何の恨みがあって、われわれをエジプトから連れ出し、こんな荒野で飢え死にさせるのか。食べ物も飲み物もないではないか。あんなまずいマナは、もうたくさんだ。」これに主は怒り、彼らを毒蛇にかませたので、多くの者が死にました。人々は困り果ててモーセに泣きつきました。「赦してください。私たちが間違っていました。主とあなたのおっしゃるとおりにしていればよかったのです。お願いですから、毒蛇がいなくなるように主に祈ってください。」モーセは民のために祈りました。主の答えはこうでした。「銅で毒蛇の複製を作り、竿の先に掲げなさい。かまれた者で、わたしの言うとおり、それを見上げる者は助けよう。」モーセはさっそく蛇の複製を作り、竿の先につけました。かまれた者で、それを見上げた者は一人残らず治りました。
第二読み物（ピリピ人第2章：第6詩–第11詩）
この読み物はピリピ人への手紙です。
キリストは神であられるのに、神としての権利を要求したり、それに執着したりはなさいませんでした。かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。そればかりか、さらに自分を低くし、犯罪人と同じようになって十字架上で死なれたのです。しかし、それゆえに、神はキリストを高く天に引き上げ、最高の名をお与えになりました。それは、その御名のもとに、すべてのものが天でも地でもひざまずき、すべての口が「イエス・キリストは主です」と告白して、父なる神がほめたたえられるためです。

キリストは、神の身分でありながら、神と等しい者であることに固執しようとは思わず、かえって自分を無にして、僕の身分になり、人間と同じ者になられました。人間の姿で現れ、へりくだって、死に至るまで、それも十字架の死に至るまで従順でした。このため、神はキリストを高く上げ、あらゆる名にまさる名をお与えになりました。こうして、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものがすべて、イエスの御名にひざまずき、すべての舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と公に宣べて、父である神をたたえるのです。

Perché qui non c'è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di questo cibo così leggero.” Allora il Signore mandò fra il popolo serpenti velenosi i quali mordevano la gente e un gran numero d'Israeliti morì. Allora il popolo venne a Mosè e disse: “Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro di te; prega il Signore che allontani da noi questi serpenti.” Mosè pregò per il popolo. Il Signore disse a Mosè: “Fatti un serpente e mettilo sopra un'asta; chiunque, dopo essere stato morso, lo guarderà resterà in vita.” Mosè allora fece un serpente di rame e lo mise sopra l'asta; quando un serpente aveva morso qualcuno, se questi guardava il serpente di rame, restava in vita.
Seconda lettura (Filippesi 2: 6–11)

Il quale, pur essendo di natura divina, non considerò un tesoro geloso la sua uguaglianza con Dio; ma spogliò se stesso, assumendo la condizione di servo e divenendo simile agli uomini; apparso in forma umana, umiliò se stesso facendosi obbediente fino alla morte e alla morte di croce. Per questo Dio l'ha esaltato e gli ha dato il nome che è al di sopra di ogni altro nome; perché nel nome di Gesù ogni ginocchio si pieghi nei cieli, sulla terra e sotto terra; e ogni lingua proclami che Gesù Cristo è il Signore, a gloria di Dio Padre.

Una lettura dal Santo Vangelo secondo Giovanni.
Eppure nessuno è mai salito al cielo, fuorchè il Figlio dell'uomo che è disceso dal cielo. E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che sia innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, perché chiunque crede in lui abbia la vita eterna. Dio infatti ha tanto amato il mondo da dare il suo Figlio unigenito, perché chiunque crede in lui non muoia, ma abbia la vita eterna. Dio non ha mandato il Figlio nel mondo per giudicare il mondo, ma perché il mondo si salvi per mezzo di lui.
