First reading (Acts 1: 1–11)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." When they had gathered together they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven."
Second reading (Ephesians 1: 17–23)

Brothers and sisters: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

But first he had instructed through the Holy Spirit the apostles he had chosen. After his passion, he presented himself to them, giving many signs that he was alive; over a period of forty days he appeared to them and taught them concerning the kingdom of God. Once when he had been eating with them, he told them, "Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the fulfillment of the Father's promise about which I have spoken to you: John baptized with water, but will be baptized with the Holy Spirit within a few days." When they had come together, they asked him, "Is it now that you will restore the Kingdom of Israel?" And he answered, "It is not for you to know the time and the steps which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth." After Jesus stated this, he was taken up before their eyes and a cloud hid him from their sight. While they were still looking up to heaven where he went, suddenly, two men dressed in white stood beside them and stated, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken from you into heaven, will return in the same way as you have seen him go there."
Second reading (Ephesians 1: 17–23)

May the God of Christ Jesus our Lord, the Father of Glory, reveal himself to you and give you a spirit of wisdom, that you may know him. May he enlighten your inner vision, that you may appreciate the things we hope for, since we were called by God. May you know how great is the inheritance, the glory, God sets apart for his saints; may you understand with what extraordinary power he acts in favor of us who believe. He revealed his almighty power in Christ when he raised him from the dead and had him sit at his right hand in heaven, far above all rule, power, authority, dominion, or any other supernatural force that could be named, not only in this world but in the world to come as well. Thus has God put all things under the feet of Christ and set him above all things, as head of the Church which is his body. He who fills all in all unfolds his fullness in the Church.

During those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (there was a group of about one hundred and twenty persons in the one place). He said, “My brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled which the holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus. He was numbered among us and was allotted a share in this ministry. For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his encampment become desolate, and may no one dwell in it.’ And: ‘May another take his office.’ Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection.” So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.

It was at this time that Peter stood up in the midst of the community—about one hundred and twenty in all—and he said, "Brothers, it was necessary that the Scriptures referring to Judas be fulfilled. The Holy Spirit had spoken through David about the one who would lead the crowd coming to arrest Jesus. He was one of our number and had been called to share our common ministry. In the book of Psalms it is written: Let his house become deserted and may no one live in it. But it is also written: May another take his office. Therefore we must choose someone from among those who were with us during all the time that the Lord Jesus moved about with us, beginning with John's baptism until the day when Jesus was taken away from us. One of these has to become, with us, a witness to his resurrection." Then they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, also known as Justus, and Matthias. They prayed: "You know, Lord, what is in the hearts of all. Show us, therefore, which of the two you have chosen to replace Judas in this apostolic ministry which he deserted to go to the replace he deserved." I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this, to give one's life for one's friends; and you are my friends if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants anymore, because servants do not know what their master is about. Instead I have called you friends, since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father. You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. And everything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. This is my command, that you love one another.
For the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia, the mass will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday. For all other U.S. Ecclesiastical Provinces, they will celebrate the Feast of Saint Matthias the Apostle.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Ascension of the Lord, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia have retained its celebration on the proper Thursday, while all other provinces have transferred this solemnity to the 7th Sunday of Easter, transpiring on Sunday, May 17, 2026. Hence, in those places where the observance of the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord has been transferred to replace the readings on the 7th Sunday of Easter, then the mass as well as the readings for the Ascension of the Lord are used.

En mi primer Libro, querido Teófilo, me referí a todo lo que hizo y enseñó Jesús, desde el comienzo, hasta el día en que subió al cielo, después de haber dado, por medio del Espíritu Santo, sus últimas instrucciones a los Apóstoles que había elegido. Después de su Pasión, Jesús se manifestó a ellos dándoles numerosas pruebas de que vivía, y durante cuarenta días se le apareció y les habló del Reino de Dios. En una ocasión, mientras estaba comiendo con ellos, les recomendó que no se alejaran de Jerusalén y esperaran la promesa del Padre: “La promesa, les dijo, que yo les he anunciado. Porque Juan bautizó con agua, pero ustedes serán bautizados en el Espíritu Santo, dentro de pocos días.” Los que estaban reunidos le preguntaron: “Señor, ¿es ahora cuando vas a restaurar el reino de Israel?” Él les respondió: “No les corresponde a ustedes conocer el tiempo y el momento que el Padre ha establecido con su propia autoridad. Kepada mereka Ia menunjukkan diri-Nya setelah penderitaan-Nya selesai, dan dengan banyak tanda Ia membuktikan, bahwa Ia hidup. Sebab selama empat puluh hari Ia berulang-ulang menampakkan diri dan berbicara kepada mereka tentang Kerajaan Allah. Pada suatu hari ketika Ia makan bersama-sama dengan mereka, Ia melarang mereka meninggalkan Yerusalem, dan menyuruh mereka tinggal di situ menantikan janji Bapa, yang—demikian kata-Nya—"telah kamu dengar dari pada-Ku. Egli si mostrò ad essi vivo, dopo la sua passione, con molte prove, apparendo loro per quaranta giorni e parlando del regno di Dio. Mentre si trovava a tavola con essi, ordinò loro di non allontanarsi da Gerusalemme, ma di attendere che si adempisse la promessa del Padre “quella, disse, che voi avete udito da me: Giovanni ha battezzato con acqua, voi invece sarete battezzati in Spirito Santo, fra non molti giorni.” Così venutisi a trovare insieme gli domandarono: “Signore, è questo il tempo in cui ricostituirai il regno di Israele?” Ma egli rispose: “Non spetta a voi conoscere i tempi e i momenti che il Padre ha riservato alla sua scelta, ma avrete forza dallo Spirito Santo che scenderà su di voi e mi sarete testimoni a Gerusalemme, in tutta la Giudea e la Samaria e fino agli estremi confini della terra.” Detto questo, fu elevato in alto sotto i loro occhi e una nube lo sottrasse al loro sguardo. Tutto infatti ha sottomesso ai suoi piedi e lo ha costituito su tutte le cose a capo della Chiesa, la quale è il suo corpo, la pienezza di colui che si realizza interamente in tutte le cose.

Él era uno de los nuestros y había recibido su parte en nuestro ministerio. En el libro de los Salmos está escrito: Que su casa quede desierta y nadie la habite. Y más adelante: Que otro ocupe su cargo. Es necesario que uno de los que han estado en nuestra compañía durante todo el tiempo que el Señor Jesús permaneció con nosotros, desde el bautismo de Juan hasta el día de la ascensión, sea constituido junto con nosotros testigo de su resurrección.” Se propusieron dos: José, llamado Barsabás, de sobrenombre el Justo, y Matías. Y oraron así: “Señor, tú que conoces los corazones de todos, muéstranos a cuál de los dos elegiste para desempeñar el ministerio del apostolado, dejado por Judas al irse al lugar que le correspondía.” Echaron suertes, y la elección cayó sobre Matías, que fue agregado a los once Apóstoles.

In quei giorni Pietro si alzò in mezzo ai fratelli (il numero delle persone radunate era circa centoventi) e disse: “Fratelli, era necessario che si adempisse ciò che nella Scrittura fu predetto dallo Spirito Santo per bocca di Davide riguardo a Giuda, che fece da guida a quelli che arrestarono Gesù. Egli era stato del nostro numero e aveva avuto in sorte lo stesso nostro ministero. Infatti sta scritto nel libro dei Salmi: La sua dimora diventi deserta, e nessuno vi abiti, il suo incarico lo prenda un altro. Bisogna dunque che tra coloro che ci furono compagni per tutto il tempo in cui il Signore Gesù ha vissuto in mezzo a noi, incominciando dal battesimo di Giovanni fino al giorno in cui è stato di tra noi assunto in cielo, uno divenga, insieme a noi, testimone della sua risurrezione.” Ne furono proposti due, Giuseppe detto Barsabba, che era soprannominato Giusto, e Mattia. Allora essi pregarono dicendo: “Tu, Signore, che conosci il cuore di tutti, mostraci quale di questi due hai designato a prendere il posto in questo ministero e apostolato che Giuda ha abbandonato per andarsene al posto da lui scelto.” Gettarono quindi le sorti su di loro e la sorte cadde su Mattia, che fu associato agli undici apostoli.
Vangelo (Giovanni 15: 9–17)
Una lectura del Santo Vangelo secondo san Giovanni.
Come il Padre ha amato me, così anch'io ho amato voi. Rimanete nel mio amore. Se osserverete i miei comandamenti, rimarrete nel mio amore, come io ho osservato i comandamenti del Padre mio e rimango nel suo amore. Questo vi ho detto perché la mia gioia sia in voi e la vostra gioia sia piena. Questo è il mio comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri, come io vi ho amati. Nessuno ha un amore più grande di questo: dare la vita per i propri amici. Voi siete miei amici, se farete ciò che io vi comando. Non vi chiamo più servi, perché il servo non sa quello che fa il suo padrone; ma vi ho chiamati amici, perché tutto ciò che ho udito dal Padre l'ho fatto conoscere a voi. Non voi avete scelto me, ma io ho scelto voi e vi ho costituiti perché andiate e portiate frutto e il vostro frutto rimanga; perché tutto quello che chiederete al Padre nel mio nome, ve lo conceda. Questo vi comando: amatevi gli uni gli altri.

Makalipas ang ilang araw, nang nagkakatipon ang may isandaan at dalawampung mga kapatid, tumayo sa harap nila si Pedro at nagsalita, “Mga kapatid, kailangang matupad ang sinasabi sa Kasulatan na ipinahayag ng Espiritu Santo sa pamamagitan ni David tungkol kay Judas na nanguna sa mga dumakip kay Jesus. Si Judas ay kabilang sa amin at naging kasama namin sa paglilingkod.” Sinabi pa ni Pedro, “Nasusulat sa Aklat ng mga Awit, ‘Ang tirahan niya'y tuluyang layuan, at huwag nang tirhan ninuman.’ Nasusulat din, ‘Gampanan ng iba ang kanyang tungkulin.’ “Kaya't dapat pumili ng isang makakasama namin bilang saksi sa muling pagkabuhay ni Jesus. Kailangang siya'y isa sa mga kasa-kasama namin sa buong panahong kasama kami ng Panginoong Jesus, mula nang bautismuhan ni Juan si Jesus hanggang sa siya ay iniakyat sa langit.” Kaya't iminungkahi nila ang dalawang lalaki, si Matias at si Jose na tinatawag na Barsabas, na kilala rin sa pangalang Justo. Pagkatapos, sila'y nanalangin, “Panginoon, alam ninyo kung ano ang nasa puso ng lahat ng tao. Ipakita po ninyo sa amin kung sino sa dalawang ito ang inyong pinili upang maglingkod bilang apostol kapalit ni Judas na tumalikod sa kanyang tungkulin nang siya'y pumunta sa lugar na nararapat sa kanya.” Nagpalabunutan sila at si Matias ang napili. Kaya't siya ay idinagdag sa labing-isang apostol.

“Kung paanong inibig ako ng Ama, gayundin naman, iniibig ko kayo; manatili kayo sa aking pag-ibig. Kung tinutupad ninyo ang aking mga utos, mananatili kayo sa aking pag-ibig, kung paanong tinupad ko ang mga utos ng aking Ama at ako'y nananatili sa kanyang pag-ibig. Sinabi ko sa inyo ang mga bagay na ito upang mapasainyo ang kagalakan ko at nang sa gayon ay malubos ang inyong kagalakan. Ito ang aking utos: magmahalan kayo gaya ng pagmamahal ko sa inyo. Ang pinakadakilang pag-ibig na maaaring taglayin ng sinuman para sa kanyang mga kaibigan ay ang ialay ang kanyang buhay para sa kanila. Kayo'y mga kaibigan ko kung tinutupad ninyo ang aking mga utos. Hindi ko na kayo itinuturing na mga alipin, sapagkat hindi alam ng alipin ang ginagawa ng kanyang panginoon. Sa halip, itinuring ko kayong mga kaibigan, sapagkat sinabi ko sa inyo ang lahat ng narinig ko sa aking Ama. Hindi kayo ang pumili sa akin, ako ang pumili sa inyo. Hinirang ko kayo upang kayo'y humayo at magbunga at manatili ang inyong bunga. Sa gayon, ang anumang hingin ninyo sa Ama sa aking pangalan, ay ibibigay sa inyo. Ito nga ang utos ko sa inyo: magmahalan kayo.”

Pada hari-hari itu berdirilah Petrus di tengah-tengah saudara-saudara yang sedang berkumpul itu, kira-kira seratus dua puluh orang banyaknya, lalu berkata: "Hai saudara-saudara, haruslah genap nas Kitab Suci, yang disampaikan Roh Kudus dengan perantaraan Daud tentang Yudas, pemimpin orang-orang yang menangkap Yesus itu. Dahulu ia termasuk bilangan kami dan mengambil bagian di dalam pelayanan ini." "Sebab ada tertulis dalam kitab Mazmur: Biarlah perkemahannya menjadi sunyi, dan biarlah tidak ada penghuni di dalamnya: dan: Biarlah jabatannya diambil orang lain. Jadi harus ditambahkan kepada kami seorang dari mereka yang senantiasa datang berkumpul dengan kami selama Tuhan Yesus bersama-sama dengan kami, yaitu mulai dari baptisan Yohanes sampai hari Yesus terangkat ke surga meninggalkan kami, untuk menjadi saksi dengan kami tentang kebangkitan-Nya." Lalu mereka mengusulkan dua orang: Yusuf yang disebut Barsabas dan yang juga bernama Yustus, dan Matias. Mereka semua berdoa dan berkata: "Ya Tuhan, Engkaulah yang mengenal hati semua orang, tunjukkanlah kiranya siapa yang Engkau pilih dari kedua orang ini, untuk menerima jabatan pelayanan, yaitu kerasulan yang ditinggalkan Yudas yang telah jatuh ke tempat yang wajar baginya." Lalu mereka membuang undi bagi kedua orang itu dan yang kena undi adalah Matias dan dengan demikian ia ditambahkan kepada bilangan kesebelas rasul itu.

"Seperti Bapa telah mengasihi Aku, demikianlah juga Aku telah mengasihi kamu; tinggallah di dalam kasih-Ku itu. Jikalau kamu menuruti perintah-Ku, kamu akan tinggal di dalam kasih-Ku, seperti Aku menuruti perintah Bapa-Ku dan tinggal di dalam kasih-Nya. Semuanya itu Kukatakan kepadamu, supaya sukacita-Ku ada di dalam kamu dan sukacitamu menjadi penuh. Inilah perintah-Ku, yaitu supaya kamu saling mengasihi, seperti Aku telah mengasihi kamu. Tidak ada kasih yang lebih besar dari pada kasih seorang yang memberikan nyawanya untuk sahabat-sahabatnya. Kamu adalah sahabat-Ku, jikalau kamu berbuat apa yang Kuperintahkan kepadamu. Aku tidak menyebut kamu lagi hamba, sebab hamba tidak tahu, apa yang diperbuat oleh tuannya, tetapi Aku menyebut kamu sahabat, karena Aku telah memberitahukan kepada kamu segala sesuatu yang telah Kudengar dari Bapa-Ku. Bukan kamu yang memilih Aku, tetapi Akulah yang memilih kamu. Dan Aku telah menetapkan kamu, supaya kamu pergi dan menghasilkan buah dan buahmu itu tetap, supaya apa yang kamu minta kepada Bapa dalam nama-Ku, diberikan-Nya kepadamu. Inilah perintah-Ku kepadamu: Kasihilah seorang akan yang lain."

この祈り会は数日間続きました。ある日、百二十人ほどが集まっていた時、ペテロが立ち上がり、次のように提案しました。「皆さん。イエスを捕らえた暴徒どもの手引きをしたユダには、聖書のことばどおりのことが起こりました。そうならなければならなかったのです。ずっと昔、聖霊によって、ダビデ王が預言したことだからです。ユダは、使徒にも選ばれた、私たちの仲間でした。実は、ダビデ王が聖書の詩篇の中で、『彼の家は荒れ果て、だれも住まなくなれ』『彼の仕事を、ほかの人に与えよ』と預言しているのです。だから今、ユダの代わりにほかの人を、イエスの復活の証人に選ばなければなりません。選ばれる者の資格ですが、何と言っても、初めから私たちと行動を共にしてきた人でなければいけません。そう、イエス様がヨハネからバプテスマを受けて以来、別れを告げて天にのぼられるまでの間、ずっと私たちといっしょにいた人です。」一同は二名の候補者を立てました。ユストというヨセフ〔別名バルサバ〕と、マッテヤです。それから、相応しい人が選ばれるように、みな一心に祈りました。「ああ、主よ。あなたは全ての人の心をご存じです。どうぞ、ユダの代わりに、二人のうちどちらを使徒にお選びになるかお示しください。ユダは当然行くべき所に行ってしまいましたから。」くじを引き、当たったのはマッテヤでした。こうして、ほかの十一人に、彼が使徒として加わることになりました。
