15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: July 11, 2010

First Reading (Deuteronomy 30: 10–14)
A reading from the book of Deuteronomy.
Moses stated this to the people: "You shall turn to the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, and observe his commandments and norms, in a word, everything written in his book of the Law. These commandments that I give you today are neither too high nor too far for you. They are not in heaven that you should say: 'Who will go up to heaven to get these commandments, so that we may hear them and put them into practice?' Neither are they at the other side of the sea for you to say: 'Who will cross to the other side and bring them to us, so that we may hear them and put them into practice?' On the contrary, my word is very near you; it is already in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can put it into practice."

Second Reading (Colossians 1: 15–20)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.

He is the image of the unseen God, and for all creation he is the first-born, for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible: thrones, rulers, authorities, powers... All was made through him and for him. He is before all and all things hold together in him. And he is the head of the body, that is the Church, for he is the first, the first raised from the dead that he may be the first in everything, for God was pleased to let fullness dwell in him. Through him God willed to reconcile all things to himself, and through him, through his blood shed on the cross. God establishes peace, on earth as in heaven.

Gospel (Luke 10: 25–37)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Then a teacher of the Law came and began putting Jesus to the test. And he asked, "Master, what shall I do to obtain eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What is written in the Scripture? How do you understand it?" The man answered, "It is written: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus replied, "That is a good answer. If you do this, you shall live." The man wanted to keep appearances, so he replied, "But, who is my neighbor?" Jesus then stated this, "There was a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. It happened that a priest was going along that road and saw the man, but passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite saw the man and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, too, was going that way, and when he came upon the man, he was moved with compassion. He went over to him and treated his wounds with oil and wine and wrapped them with bandages. Then he put him on his own mount and brought him to an inn where he took care of him. The next day he had to set off, but he gave two silver coins to the innkeeper and told him: 'Take care of him and whatever you spend on him, I will repay when I come back.'" Jesus then asked, "Which of these three, do you think, made himself neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The teacher of the Law answered, "The one who had mercy on him." And Jesus replied, "Go then, and do the same."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 69) (Verses 14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, and 36-37)
The response is: Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

I pray to you, O Lord, at a time most favorable to you. In your great love, O God, answer me with your unfailing help. In your mercy, O Lord, give me a good answer; in your great compassion, turn to me.

I myself am humbled and wounded; your salvation, O God, will lift me up. I will praise the name of God in song; I will glorify him with thanksgiving.

Let the lowly witness this and be glad. You who seek God, may your hearts be revived. For the lord hears the needy and does not despise those in captivity.

For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. His people shall dwell in the land and possess it; the children of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell in it.

    1. Primera Lectura (Deuteronomio 30: 10-14)

  2. Hey Sean! I just went to church in St. Theresia today, and I have heard Father Anton's homily. It was incredibly interesting and delirious! What do you think? In addition, could you please show me the readings for next week? Thank you! Please reply!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Whoa, Ufretin! I did not know you live in Indonesia. But yes, I truly think Father Anton is awesome on his homily. Everyone was laughing at the take where many Catholics committed crimes. Now that you asked for the readings for next week, for the 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time, the readings are shown below:
For the First Reading, you will read the book of Genesis, chapter 18, verses 1-10a.
For the Second Reading, you will read the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians, chapter 1, verses 24-28.
For the Gospel, it is according to Luke, chapter 10, verses 38-42.
    I hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hey guys! I can tell that the homily of Father Anton is quite interesting and hilarious. I laughed at the comment that Sean wrote about the Catholics committing so much crimes. For your information, the Gospel is teaching us to be more compassionate towards others. Do not think about yourselves, but think for other people as well. So when you see somebody in despair, devote your life to assist these people and waste your time.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Sean, so demystify the readings for me. I would like to ask, what should I do to acquire eternal life?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Greetings Paulus. The Gospel is teaching us to be more compassionate towards others. Do not think about yourselves, but think for other people as well. So when you see somebody in despair, devote yourlife to assist these people and waste your name. I have a chart that measures the right responsibility. There are six levels, and the highest level you should reach is level six. The chart below are as follows:
Level 1: I do not want to get into trouble.
    Level 2: I want a reward.
Level 3: I want to please somebody.
Level 4: I follow the rules.
Level 5: I am considerate of other people.
Level 6: I have a personal code of behavior and I follow it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. In the Gospel reading, the priest and the Levite are thinking about themselves, and avoiding events that causes harm to themselves. Therefore, that is Level 1 in the scale above. The Samaritan, however, shows deep care and compassion towards the victim. Therefore, that is Level 5 in the scale above. Try to reach Level 6 for your responsibilities. In addition, if you want to acquire eternal life, you must follow the commandments.
    I hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  8. But Sean, what are the commandments? Please reply.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Let's bring back your memory. Here are the ten commandments.
Commandment 1: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of slavery. Do not have other gods before me. Do not have idols, do not make any figure of things in the heaven or here below on the earth, or in the waters under the earth. Do not kneel before them or worship them, because I, the Lord, am your God, a jealous God who punishes the children until the third and fourth generation for the wickedness of their parents who hate me. But I am merciful to the thousandth generation to those who love me and obey my commandments.

Commandment 2: Do not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain because the Lord will not leave a person unpunished who takes his name in vain.

Commandment 3: Take care to keep holy the sabbath day, as the Lord, your God, commands you. You have six days to work and do your assignments. But the seventh day is the Day of Rest in honor of the Lord, your God. Do not do any work, you or your child, or your servant, or your ox, or your donkey, or any of your animals. Neither will the foreigner who lives in your land work. Your servant will rest just like you. Remember that you were once enslaved in the land Egypt from where the Lord, your God, brought you out with his powerful hand and outstretched arm. For that reason, the Lord, your God, commands you to observe the sabbath.

Commandment 4: Honor your father and your mother as the Lord, your God, has commanded, and you will live long and it will be well with you in the land which, the Lord, your God, gives you.

    Commandment 5: Do not kill.

Commandment 6: Do not commit adultery.

    Commandment 7: Do not steal.

Commandment 8: Do not give false witness against your neighbor.

Commandment 9: Do not covet your neighbor's wife.

Commandment 10: Do not covet the house of your neighbor, or his field, or his servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is in his possession.

In addition, the scriptures above add to your mission, Paulus. I hope this helps!

  11. Totally hilarious and interesting when Father Anton states that so many Catholics are committing such crimes.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well, I amen to what Solmyr said. I absolutely concur!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Now why did Jesus mentioned that a priest ignored a victim? That is awkward; that is not the right action to do as a priest.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Gurvilin, you are cracking me up! Why did Jesus mentioned a priest in his parables? Priests should also be compassionate as well. Why?!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Gurvilin! Dude, you just earned $1,000,000 for asking that question! Jackpot bonus! I am so laughing like crazy! We should ask Sean about that!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hey Gurvilin! Nice! You really comprehended the text well and inferred very good. So hysterical that the priest ignores a wounded victim. Indeed, you have won $1,000,000 already! Let's ask Sean for his commentary. Sean, what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Indeed, Gurvilin had truly won $1,000,000 already. To be honest, I really do not know the reason why Jesus had inserted a priest in his parables. However, I believe that Jesus is just throwing an example of a disqualified priest.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Congratulations, Gurvilin, you have just won a million dollars. You have been granted ten wishes. What are your wishes?

    ReplyDelete
  19. You know, I have been living in Axeoth for too long. I have watched on television the best teenage Disney stars. My dreams are to travel to the United States and have a scavenger hunt to find these popular teen stars. That is my wish.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Who are those celebrities? Could you please mention them, Gurvilin? I want to see their faces.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, Gurvilin! I also desire to understand these celebrities and see their faces?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I ditto what Bohb said. Tell us!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am same with Solmyr. I am interested too about celebrities, especially Disney celebrities. Tell us their names and show pictures of them!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay. I want to travel to United States and see if I can meet David Henrie, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Stone, Jake T. Austin, Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse, Brenda Song, Ashley Tisdale, Debby Ryan, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso, Jason Earles, and Moises Arias. Those are the people I desire to meet in United States.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wait. But who is Jake T. Austin? And who is Debby Ryan? And who is Moises Arias? Please demystify.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ufretin, do you not know who Jake T. Austin is? And who Debby Ryan is? And who Moises Arias is? Jake T. Austin is Max Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place and is also the voice actor of Diego in Go Diego Go, because he can speak Spanish. Debby Ryan is Bailey Pickett in the Suite Life on Deck. She has a boyfriend, Cody, who is Cole Sprouse. Moises Arias is Rico, a beverage worker on a beach with Jackson; Jason Earles.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow, Paulus! You know your stars already! I give you $500,000 (half a million) for remembering that whole information. Sorry to be biased, people.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That is okay, Gurvilin. I do not need a million dollars just to make me happy. I have the money I need just to make me satisfied.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I ditto what Solmyr said. In fact, I earn a lot of money just by documenting artifacts and their powers. It is really a simple job, it is not too sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am just making a guess, but I believe that David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, and Selena Gomez are from Wizards of Waverly Place, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Debby Ryan, and Brenda Song are from the Suite Life on Deck, and Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso, Jason Earles, and Moises Arias are from Hannah Montana.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You forgot to mention that Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals Barrera, and David Deluise are in Wizards of Waverly Place; Phill Lewis in the Suite Life on Deck; Billy Ray Cyrus in Hannah Montana.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Actually, those names you listed are adults, not teenagers (except Jennifer Stone), so they are not much of interest to me. No offense to them! I apologize for that!

    ReplyDelete
  33. That wish will soon be granted. Sometime, I don't know... But I am sure that your dreams will do come true. It is probable. What are your next wishes?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would like to enter the Paws Incorporated and meet Jim Davis, creator of Garfield and friends.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Really? You like Garfield? Who is your favorite character?

    ReplyDelete
  36. You know, when you asked that question, Paulus, I like Garfield, Jon, Odie, Nermal, and Doc Boy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Really? Ufretin, why do you like Doc Boy?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the way when Jon calls Doc Boy, "Hey, Doc Boy!" Doc Boy replies, "Do not call me Doc Boy!" It is constantly delirious! In addition, Garfield is irritated by that constant reply.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like Nermal because he always teases Garfield about his fame, and Garfield hates it, which constantly makes him send Nermal to Abu Dhabi, all that way to United Arab Emirates! Now did Nermal travel back to the United States?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Of course! Nermal returns to the United States to annoy Garfield, still happy as ever. Spending time, irritating Garfield. The question is, how did Nermal get back all the way there?

    ReplyDelete
  41. We have a new winner! Jackpot bonus! Paulus wins $1,000,000!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you for the reward. But I would like to give the money away as charity towards the UNICEF organization. (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund)

    ReplyDelete
  43. How about UNESCO? (United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) Is that right? I think I may need to work on my acronyms.

    ReplyDelete
  44. No, I believe that is correct, Ufretin. You do not need to work on your acronyms. You may, if you want to.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Congratulations Paulus, since you have won $1,000,000, you also have acquired ten wishes. What are your wishes?
