9th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: March 6, 2011

First Reading (Deuteronomy 11: 18, 26-28, and 32)
A reading from the book of Deuteronomy.
Moses stated this to the people of Israel: "Engrave these words of mine on your heart and in your soul, brand them on your hand as a sign, and keep them always before your eyes. See that on this day, I set before you a blessing and a curse. A blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord that I command you today; a curse if you disobey these commandments and turn aside from the way that I show you now, to follow strange gods which are not yours. Be careful to carry out all the laws and precepts which I now set before you.

Second Reading (Romans 3: 21-25a and 28)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: Now we are told how God makes us just as he wants us to be without the Law. This was already foretold in the Law and the Prophets: God makes us righteous by means of faith in Jesus Christ, and this is applied to all who believe, without distinction of persons. Because all have sinned and all fall short of the Glory of God; and all are graciously forgiven and made righteous through the redemption effected in Christ Jesus. For God has given him to be the victim whose blood obtains us forgiveness through faith. For we hold that people are in God's grace by faith and not because of all the things ordered by the Law.

Gospel (Matthew 7: 21-27)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus continued to teach the crowd on the mountain while his disciples gathered him. Jesus stated: "Not everyone who says to me: Lord! Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father. Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not speak in your name?" Then I will tell them openly: I have never known you; away from me, you evil people! So, then, anyone who hears these words of mine and acts accordingly is like a wise man, who built his house on rock. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock. But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not act accordingly, is like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house; it collapsed, and what a terrible fall that was!"

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 31) (Verse 2-4, 17, and 25)
The response is: Lord, be my rock of safety.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge, may I never be disgraced; deliver me in your justice. Give heed to my plea, and make haste to rescue me.

Be a rock of refuge for me, a fortress for my safety. For you are my rock and stronghold, lead me for your name's sake.

Make your face upon your servant; save me in your love. Be strong and take courage, all you who hope in the Lord.

  2. This is the final time where we glorify the Lord in the Gloria. In the Lent season, the Gloria would be omitted.

  3. The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Optionally, you may join Jesus as fasting for 40 days until Easter Vigil for observing these religious events.

  4. This is the Kyrie for the 9th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Priest: Lord Jesus, you teach us to build our houses on the right foundation, if we want to live in the truth. Lord, have mercy.
    Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: Jesus Christ, we live in a world where moral and ethical debate is more likely to be characterized by opinion rather than by truth. Christ, have mercy.
    Congregation: Christ, have mercy.

Priest: Lord Jesus, only the truth can set us free. Help us to realize the importance of every moral decision we make. Lord, have mercy.
    Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Have mercy on us Lord, how frequently, we listen to your words but we do not act on them, like a fool, who built his house on sand. Please forgive our sins and lead us all to your everlasting life.

  5. This is the Opening Prayer for the 9th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Let us pray. Father, your love never fails. Hear our call. Keep us from danger and provide for all our needs. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

  6. Lord, as we gather to offer our gifts confident in your love, make us holy by sharing your life with us and by this eucharist forgive our sins. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

  7. Father, all powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. So great was your love that you gave us your Son as our redeemer. You sent him as one like ourselves, through free from sin, that you might see and love in us what you see and love in Christ. Your gifts of grace, lost by disobedience, are now restored by the obedience of your Son. We praise you Lord, with all the angels and saints, we proclaim your glory, in their hymn/song of joy/praise. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)

  8. The Gospel shows Jesus teaching the crowd and his disciples on the mountain. This is the last part of Jesus' teaching, with the fool who built his house on sand and the wise who built his house on rock.

  9. Who would ever built their house on sand? Of course the house will never be stable, because the sand is mostly slippery because of the ocean.

  10. Of course, because the house can only be stable with the foundation on rock. It is important to have these houses indestructible for a good living.
