15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: July 14, 2013

First Reading (Deuteronomy 30: 10-14)
A reading from the book of Deuteronomy.
Moses stated this to the people: "You shall turn to the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, and observe his commandments and norms, in a word, everything written in his book of the Law. These commandments that I give you today are neither too high nor too far for you. They are not in heaven that you should say: 'Who will go up to heaven to get these commandments, so that we may hear them and put them into practice?' Neither are they at the other side of the sea for you to say: 'Who will cross to the other side and bring them to us, so that we may hear them and put them into practice?' On the contrary, my word is very near you; it is already in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can put it into practice."

Second Reading (Colossians 1: 15-20)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.

He is the image of the unseen God, and for all creation he is the first-born, for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible: thrones, rulers, authorities, powers... All was made through him and for him. He is before all and all things hold together in him. And he is the head of the body, that is the Church, for he is the first, the first raised from the dead that he may be the first in everything, for God was pleased to let fullness dwell in him. Through him God willed to reconcile all things to himself, and through him, through his blood shed on the cross. God establishes peace, on earth as in heaven.

Gospel (Luke 10: 25-37)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Then a teacher of the Law came and began putting Jesus to the test. And he asked, "Master, what shall I do to obtain eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What is written in the Scripture? How do you understand it?" The man answered, "It is written: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus replied, "That is a good answer. If you do this, you shall live." The man wanted to keep appearances, so he replied, "But, who is my neighbor?" Jesus then stated this, "There was a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. It happened that a priest was going along that road and saw the man, but passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite saw the man and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, too, was going that way, and when he came upon the man, he was moved with compassion. He went over to him and treated his wounds with oil and wine and wrapped them with bandages. Then he put him on his own mount and brought him to an inn where he took care of him. The next day he had to set off, but he gave two silver coins to the innkeeper and told him: 'Take care of him and whatever you spend on him, I will repay when I come back.'" Jesus then asked, "Which of these three, do you think, made himself neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The teacher of the Law answered, "The one who had mercy on him." And Jesus replied, "Go then, and do the same."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 69) (Verses 14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, and 36-37)
The response is: Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

I pray to you, O Lord, at a time most favorable to you. In your great love, O God, answer me with your unfailing help. In your mercy, O Lord, give me a good answer; in your great compassion, turn to me.

I myself am humbled and wounded; your salvation, O God, will lift me up. I will praise the name of God in song; I will glorify him with thanksgiving.

Let the lowly witness this and be glad. You who seek God, may your hearts be revived. For the lord hears the needy and does not despise those in captivity.

For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. His people shall dwell in the land and possess it; the children of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell in it.

  2. Primera Lectura (Deuteronomio 30: 10-14)

  3. Hey people! Remember this Gospel three years ago? It is the compassion of the Samaritan. Father Anton presented this Gospel with an outstanding homily before, and he shall not be forgotten!

    1. Yes! It happens to be that Father Anton talked about many crimes that Catholics commit as well as a example of the worst priest to pass by a wounded victim.

    6. I feel sad, not only for the black African man, but also for the South African lady who had this prejudice. Her behavior has caused her downfall as the African man is promoted and heads out to first class.

    7. Wow. That homily is captivating, yes? It tells us, are we compassionate? How do we become compassionate? What is compassion?

    8. It may be easier said than done, but if you persevere, you will realize that having compassion on others really connects you to the same human being created by God.

O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  9. Priest: On the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, the gospel has made us discover those we will meet on all our roads today. We pray for them, as we say: Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
    — For those who deprive others from what they have; for those who do not see the needs of others and pass by on the other side of the road so as not to see them; that they may care for their neighbor, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
    — For those who are abandoned by the roadside, for those without friends and for those in whom no one is interested; that their neighbors may discover them, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
    — For those who stop on the road to help people in need: for those who visit the sick and care for them; for those who go out of their way to bring help to others; that they may stay close to their neighbor, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
    — For those who are wounded in their body or their heart; for those whom we do not love and for those whom we do not love enough that we make them our neighbors, let us pray to the Lord. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
    — Lord, in your Holy name, obtain for us from your Heavenly Father, His providence of the Saint Peter Canisius International Catholic Parish. Let us pray to the Lord. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy.
Priest: Lord, help us to love our neighbor as ourself and become closer to by becoming closer to people. Make us discover in them, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  11. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For by his birth he brought renewal to humanity's fallen state, and by his suffering, canceled out our sins; by his rising from the dead, he has opened the way to eternal life, and by ascending to you, O Father, he has unlocked the gates of heaven. And so, with the company of Angels and Saints, we sing the hymn of your praise, as without end we acclaim…

Go and help people around you suffering, humiliated, beaten by life. Lift them up, bind their wounds, give them your time and the best of yourselves, with the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Therefore, let us go and love one another as the Lord loves us. Thanks be to God.
