33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: November 17, 2013

First Reading (Malachi 3: 19–20)
A reading from the book of the Prophet Malachi.

The day already comes, flaming as a furnace. On that day all the proud and evildoers will be burned like straw in the fire. They will be left without branches or roots. On the other hand the sun of justice will shine upon you who respect my Name and bring health in its rays. You will come out leaping like fattened calves.

Second Reading (2 Thessalonians 3: 7–12)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.
You know how you ought to follow our example: we worked while we were with you. Day and night we labored and toiled so as not to be a burden to any of you. We had the right to act otherwise, but we wanted to give you an example. Besides, while we were with you, we stated clearly: If anyone is not willing to work, neither should that one eat. However, we heard that some among you live in idleness — busybodies, doing no work. In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord we command these people to work and earn their own living.

Gospel (Luke 21: 5–19)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stone-work and rich gifts, Jesus stated to them, "The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down." And they asked him, "Master when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?" Jesus then stated, "Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and stating: 'I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand.' Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, do not be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon." And Jesus stated, "Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen. Before all this happens, people will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and be put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 98) (Verses 4b–9)
The response is: The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.

Sing praise to the Lord by breaking into song, with the melody of the lyre and with the music of the harp. With trumpet blast and sound of the horn, rejoice before the King, the Lord!

Let the sea resound and everything in it, the world and all its peoples. Let rivers clap their hands, hills and mountains sing with joy.

Before the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth; he will judge the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

  8. Priest: Let us ask the Lord to set all people free from the bondage of fear and danger, and find strength in the Spirit to put our trust in the Lord. In addition, let us pray for the victims and survivors of the typhoon in the Philippines. May they find courage to overcome this daunting disaster, comfort and consolation for those who are lending them helping hands, and strength to rebuild their lives. And let us say: Lord, keep them save.
    — Lord, help us to become not so attached to the earthly goods, to make good use of our time, to do lively apostolate, and to seek the riches in heaven. Let us pray: Lord, keep us save.
    — Lord, while we set our eyes on Heaven, do not let us forget that we must also have our feet firmly planted on the earth. That you have entrusted us here on earth, to work with intensity to give glory to your name. Let us pray: Lord, keep us save.
    — Lord, give us discerned heart to stay away from the false prophets, peaceful heart in time of conflicts, charitable heart to people in needs, just and right heart for human justice. May our prayers and works begin and end always with you. Let us pray: Lord, keep us save.
    — Lord, in your Holy name, obtain for us from your Heavenly Father, his providence of the Saint Peter Canisius International Catholic Parish. Let us pray: Lord, keep us save.
    — We pray for those intentions offered for the Mass and for our personal intentions… Let us pray: Lord, keep us save.
Priest: Lord, you want us to be free from any bondage. Help us to go through the joys and pains of life, with a firm hope in trust in you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  10. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For through his Paschal Mystery, he accomplished the marvelous deed, by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and people for our own possession, to proclaim everywhere your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim…

  12. This is the Blessing (Closing Prayer) for the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Bow your heads and pray for God's blessing.
Much is changing today, some for the better and some for the worse. We seem to be at a turning point in history both in the church and in the world. There is much anxiety among people. [The point is not: Is this the end of the world?] But we should leave that to the Lord. It is rather: What do we do to make this world humane, livable, and in conformity with the message of the gospel? May we prepare for the Lord's coming with the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Therefore, let us go in peace, and put our trust and hope in Christ. Thanks be to God.
