First Reading (Isaiah 42: 1–4 and 6–7)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight. I have put my spirit upon him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He does not shout or raise his voice; proclamations are not heard in the streets. A broken reed he will not crush, nor will he snuff out the light of the wavering wick. He will make justice appear in truth. He will not waver or be broken until he has established justice on earth; the islands are waiting for his law. I, the Lord, have called you for the sake of justice; I will hold your hand to make you firm; I will make you as a covenant to the people, and as a light to the nations, to open eyes that do not see, to free captives from prison, to bring out to light those who sit in darkness.

Peter then spoke to the people gathered in the house of Cornelius, stating: "Truly, I realize that God does not show partiality, but in all nations he listens to everyone who fears God and does good. And this is the message he has sent to the children of Israel, the good news of peace he has proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all. No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached. You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarean with Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all who were in the devil's power, because God was with him."

At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, and stated, "How is it you come to me; I should be baptized by you!" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be like that for now that we may fulfill the right order." John concurred. As soon as he was baptized, Jesus came up from the water. At once, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God come down like a dove and rest upon him. At the same time a voice from heaven was heard, "This is my Son, the Beloved; he is my Chosen One."

Give the Lord, O sons of God, give the Lord glory and strength, give the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in great liturgy.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over vast waters. How powerful is the voice of the Lord, How splendorous is the voice of the Lord.
The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all cry, "Glory!" Over the flood the Lord was sitting; the Lord is king and he reigns forever.
The new response is: The Lord will bless his people with peace.

He aquí a mi siervo a quien yo sostengo, mi elegido, al que escogí con gusto. He puesto mi Espíritu sobre él, y hará que la justicia llegue a las naciones. No clama, no grita, no se escuchan proclamaciones en las plazas. No rompe la caña doblada ni aplasta la mecha que está por apagarse, sino que hace florecer la justicia en la verdad. No se dejará quebrar ni aplastar, hasta que establezca el derecho en la tierra. Las tierras de ultramar esperan su ley. Yo, Yahvé, te he llamado para cumplir mi justicia, te he formado y tomado de la mano, te he destinado para que unas a mi pueblo y seas luz para todas las naciones. Para abrir los ojos a los ciegos, para sacar a los presos de la cárcel, y del calabozo a los que yacen en la oscuridad.

La respuesta es: El Señor bendecirá a su gente con justicia.
• ¡Aclamen al Señor, hijos de Dios, aclamen al gloria y el poder del Señor! ¡Aclamen la gloria del hombre del Señor, adórenlo al manifestarse su santidad!
• ¡La voz del Señor sobre las aguas! El Dios de la gloria hace oír su trueno: el Señor está sobre las aguas torrenciales. ¡La voz del Señor es potente, la voz del Señor es majestuosa!

Ustedes ya saben qué ha ocurrido en toda Judea, comenzando por Galilea, después del bautismo que predicaba Juan: cómo Dios ungió a Jesús de Nazaret con el Espíritu Santo, llenándolo de poder. El pasó haciendo el bien y curando a todos los que habían caído en poder del demonio, porque Dios estaba con él.”

Por entonces vino Jesús de Galilea al Jordán, para encontrar a Juan y para que éste lo bautizara. Juan quiso disuadirlo y le dijo: “¿Tú vienes a mí? Soy yo quien necesita ser bautizado por ti.” Jesús le respondió: “Deja que hagamos así por ahora. De este modo cumpliremos todo como debe hacerse.” Entonces Juan aceptó. Una vez bautizado, Jesús salió del agua. En ese momento se abrieron los Cielos y vio al Espíritu de Dios que bajaba como una paloma y se posaba sobre él. Al mismo tiempo se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: “Este es mi Hijo, el Amado; en él me complazco.”
La respuesta nueva para el salmo es: El Señor bendecirá a su gente con paz.

For in the waters of the Jordan you revealed with signs and wonders a new baptism, so that through the voice that came down from heaven we might come to believe in your word dwelling among us, and by the Spirit's descending in the likeness of a dove we might know that Christ your Servant has been anointed with the oil of gladness and sent to bring the good news to the poor.
