10th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: June 5, 2016

First Reading (1 Kings 17: 17–24)

A reading from the first book of Kings.
After this, the son of this housewife became ill. And such was his illness that he stopped breathing. She then stated to Elijah, "What did you do, O man of God? Have you come to uncover past sins and cause my son's death?" He answered, "Give me your son." Taking him from her lap, he carried him up to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. Then he called on the Lord, "O Lord, my God, will you afflict even the widow with whom I am residing by letting her son die?" Then he stretched himself on the child three times and called on the Lord, " O Lord, my God, let this child's breath return to him." The Lord listened to the pleading of Elijah and the child's breath returned to him, and he lived. Elijah then took the child and brought him down from the upper room. He gave him to his mother and stated, "See, your son is alive." Then the woman stated to Elijah, "Now I am certain that you are a man of God, and that your words really came from the Lord."

Second Reading (Galatians 1: 11–19)

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians.
Let me remind you, brothers and sisters, that the Gospel we preached to you is not a human message, nor did not I received it from anyone, I was not taught of it but it came to me as a revelation from Christ Jesus. You have heard of my previous activity in the Jewish community; I furiously persecuted the Church of God and tried to destroy it. For I was more devoted to the Jewish religion than many follow Jews of my age, and I defended the traditions of my ancestors made fanatically. But one day God called me out of his great love, he who had chosen me from my mother's womb; and he was pleased to reveal in me his Son, that I might make him known among the pagan nations. Then I did not seek human advice nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me. I immediately went to Arabia, and from there I returned again to Damascus. Later, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to meet Cephas, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. But I did not see any other apostle except James, the Lord's brother.

Gospel (Luke 7: 11–17)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
A little later Jesus went to a town called Naim and many of his disciples went with him — a great number of people. As he reached the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was the only son of his mother and she was a widow; there followed a large crowd of townspeople. On seeing her, the Lord had pity on her and stated, "Do not cry." Then he came up and touched the stretcher and the men who carried it stopped. Jesus then stated, "Young man, awake, I tell you." And the dead man got up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. A holy fear came over them all and they praised God stating, "A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people." This news spread out in the Jewish country and the surrounding places.

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 30) (Verses 2, 4–6, 11–12a, and 13b)
The response is: I will praise you Lord, for you have rescued me.

I extol you, O lord, for you have rescued me; my enemies will not gloat over me. O Lord, you have brought me up from the grave; you gave me life when I was going to the pit.

Sing to the Lord, O you his saints, give thanks and praise to his holy name. For his anger lasts but a little while, and his kindness all through life. Weeping may tarry for the night, but rejoicing comes with the dawn.

Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me; O Lord, be my protector." But now, you have turned my mourning into rejoicing; O Lord my God, forever will I give you thanks.

  2. Primera Lectura (1 Reyes 17: 17–24)

  8. Priest: The Lord Jesus lives in his Father's presence and there he pleads for us. Let us pray to him that he may strengthen the church with his power, and let us say: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord Jesus, plead for all those who make you known on earth and also from those who forget to do so. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord Jesus, plead for all those who continue your suffering in their bodies and for those who inflict pain on others. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord Jesus, plead for those who bring the joy of your resurrection to people by transforming this world in justice and love, and for those who refuse to do so. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord Jesus, plead for those who are converted and seek your forgiveness, and also for those who cannot forgive. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord Jesus, plead for us, for all those we love and for those who do not love enough. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
    — Lord, in your Holy name, obtain for us from your Heavenly Father, His providence of the Saint Peter Canisius International Catholic Parish. And so we pray: Lord of glory, hear our prayer.
Priest: And now let us offer our own personal intentions to our Father, praying that he will support us all the way when we need him.
Lord Jesus, let your Spirit give us power from on high to make us pray for what matters and to make us live in your love. Your are our Lord forever and ever. Amen.

  10. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For in you we live and move and have our being, and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care, but even now possess the pledge of life eternal. For having received the first fruits of the Spirit, through whom you raised up Jesus from the dead, we hope for an everlasting share in the Paschal Mystery. And so, with all the Angels, we praise you, as in joyful celebration we acclaim…
