Reading (Isaiah 42: 1–4 and 6–7) (Option 1)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight. I have put my spirit upon him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He does not shout or raise his voice; proclamations are not heard in the streets. A broken reed he will not crush, nor will he snuff out the light of the wavering wick. He will make justice appear in truth. He will not waver or be broken until he has established justice on earth; the islands are waiting for his law. I, the Lord, have called you for the sake of justice; I will hold your hand to make you firm; I will make you as a covenant to the people, and as a light to the nations, to open eyes that do not see, to free captives from prison, to bring out to light those who sit in darkness.

Peter then spoke to the people gathered in the house of Cornelius, stating: "Truly, I realize that God does not show partiality, but in all nations he listens to everyone who fears God and does good. And this is the message he has sent to the children of Israel, the good news of peace he has proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all. No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached. You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarean with Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all who were in the devil's power because God was with him."
Gospel (Matthew 3: 13–17)

At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, and stated, "How is it you come to me; I should be baptized by you!" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be like that for now that we may fulfill the right order." John concurred. As soon as he was baptized, Jesus came up from the water. At once, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God come down like a dove and rest upon him. At the same time a voice from heaven was heard, "This is my Son, the Beloved; he is my Chosen One."

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all cry, "Glory!" Over the flood the Lord was sitting; the Lord is king and he reigns forever.

He aquí a mi siervo a quien yo sostengo, mi elegido, al que escogí con gusto. He puesto mi Espíritu sobre él, y hará que la justicia llegue a las naciones. No clama, no grita, no se escuchan proclamaciones en las plazas. No rompe la caña doblada ni aplasta la mecha que está por apagarse, sino que hace florecer la justicia en la verdad. No se dejará quebrar ni aplastar, hasta que establezca el derecho en la tierra. Las tierras de ultramar esperan su ley. Yo, Yahvé, te he llamado para cumplir mi justicia, te he formado y tomado de la mano, te he destinado para que unas a mi pueblo y seas luz para todas las naciones. Para abrir los ojos a los ciegos, para sacar a los presos de la cárcel, y del calabozo a los que yacen en la oscuridad.

Por entonces vino Jesús de Galilea al Jordán, para encontrar a Juan y para que éste lo bautizara. Juan quiso disuadirlo y le dijo: “¿Tú vienes a mí? Soy yo quien necesita ser bautizado por ti.” Jesús le respondió: “Deja que hagamos así por ahora. De este modo cumpliremos todo como debe hacerse.” Entonces Juan aceptó. Una vez bautizado, Jesús salió del agua. En ese momento se abrieron los Cielos y vio al Espíritu de Dios que bajaba como una paloma y se posaba sobre él. Al mismo tiempo se oyó una voz del cielo que decía: “Este es mi Hijo, el Amado; en él me complazco.”

Dumating si Jesus sa Ilog Jordan mula sa Galilea upang magpabautismo kay Juan. Ngunit tinangka ni Juan na pigilan siya at sinabi, “Ako po ang dapat magpabautismo sa inyo! Bakit kayo nagpapabautismo sa akin?” Subalit sumagot si Jesus, “Hayaan mong ito ang mangyari ngayon, sapagkat ito ang nararapat nating gawin upang matupad ang kalooban ng Diyos.” Kaya't pumayag din si Juan. Nang mabautismuhan si Jesus, kaagad siyang umahon sa tubig. Nabuksan ang langit at nakita ni Jesus ang Espiritu ng Diyos na bumababang parang isang kalapati at dumapo sa kanya. At isang tinig mula sa langit ang nagsabi, “Ito ang minamahal kong Anak na lubos kong kinalulugdan!”
