First Reading (Genesis 2: 7–9 and 3: 1–7)
A reading from the book of Genesis.
The Lord God formed Man, dust is drawn from the clay, and breathed into his nostrils a breath of life and Man became alive with breath. God planted a garden in Eden in the east and there he placed Man whom he had created. The Lord God caused to grow from the ground every kind of tree that is pleasing to see and good to eat, also the tree of Life in the middle of the garden and the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Now the serpent was the most crafty of all the wild creatures that the Lord God had made. He stated to the woman, "Did God really say: You must not eat from any tree in the garden?" The woman stated to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden, but of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden God stated: You must not eat, and you must not touch it or you will die." The serpent stated to the woman, "You will not die, but God knows that the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil." The woman saw that the fruit was good to eat, and pleasant to the eyes, and ideal for gaining knowledge. She took its fruit and ate it and gave some to her husband who was with her. He ate it. Then their eyes were opened and both of them knew they were naked. So they sewed leaves of a fig tree together and made themselves loincloths.
Second Reading (Romans 5: 12–19)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: Now, sin entered the world through one man and through sin, death, and later on death spread to all humankind, because all sinned. As long as there was no law, they could not speak of disobedience, but sin was already in the world. This is why from Adam to Moses death reigned among them, although their sin was not disobedience as in Adam's case – this was not the true Adam, but foretold the other who was to come. Such has been the fall, but God's gift goes far beyond. Multitudes die because of the fault of one man, but how much more does the grace of God spread when the gift he granted reaches the multitudes, from this unique man Jesus Christ. The gift of God more than compensated for sin. The disobedience that brought condemnation was of one sinner, whereas the grace of God brings forgiveness to a world of sinners. If death reigned through the disobedience of one and only one person, how much more will there be the grace and the gift of true righteousness through the one person, Jesus Christ. Just as one transgression brought the sentence of death to all, so, too, one rehabilitation brought pardon and life to all; and as the disobedience of only one made many sinners, so the obedience of one person allowed a multitude to be made just and holy.

The Spirit led Jesus into the desert that he be put to the test by the devil. After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. Then the devil came to him and stated, "If you are the Son of God, order these stones to transform into bread." But Jesus answered, "Scripture states: One does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Then the devil took Jesus to the holy city, set him on the highest wall of the temple, and stated to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for scripture states, God has given orders to his angels about you. Their hands will hold you up lest you hurt your foot against a stone." Jesus answered, "But Scripture also states: You shall not put to the test the Lord your God." Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the nations of the world in all their greatness and splendor. And he stated, "All this I will give you if you kneel and worship me." Then Jesus answered, "Be off, Satan! Scripture states: Worship the Lord your God and serve him alone." Then the devil left him, and angels came to serve him.

Yahvé Dios plantó un jardín en un lugar del Oriente llamado Edén, y colocó allí al hombre que había formado. Yahvé Dios hizo brotar del suelo toda clase de árboles, agradables a la vista y buenos para comer. El árbol de la Vida estaba en el jardín, como también el árbol de la Ciencia del bien y del mal. La serpiente era el más astuto de todos los animales del campo que Yahvé Dios había hecho. Dijo a la mujer: “¿Es cierto que Dios les ha dicho: No coman de ninguno de los árboles del jardín?” La mujer respondió a la serpiente: “Podemos comer de los frutos de los árboles del jardín, pero no de ese árbol que está en medio del jardín, pues Dios nos ha dicho: No coman de él ni lo prueban siquiera, porque si lo hacen morirán.” La serpiente dijo a la mujer: “No es cierto que morirán. Segunda Lectura (Romanos 5: 12–19)

Por lo tanto, por un solo hombre entró el pecado en el mundo, y por el pecado la muerte, y así la muerte pasó a todos los hombres, porque todos pecaron. En efecto, el pecado ya estaba en el mundo, antes de la Ley, pero cuando no hay Ley, el pecado no se tiene en cuenta. Sin embargo, la muerte reinó desde Adán hasta Moisés, incluso en aquellos que no habían pecado, cometiendo una transgresión semejante a la de Adán, que es figura del que debía venir. Pero no hay proporción entre el don y la falta. Porque si la falta de uno solo provocó la muerte de todos, la gracia de Dios y el don conferido pro la gracia de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, fueron derramados mucho más abundantemente sobre todos. Tampoco se puede comparar ese don con las consecuencias del pecado cometido por un solo hombre, ya que el juicio de condenación vino por una sola falta, mientras que el don de la gracia lleva a la justificación después de muchas faltas. En efecto, si por la falta de uno solo reinó la muerte, con mucha más razón, vivirán y reinarán por medio de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, aquellos que han recibido abundantemente la gracia y el don de la justicia. Por consiguiente, así como la falta de uno solo causó la condenación de todos, también el acto de justicia de uno solo producirá para todos los hombres la justificación que conduce a la Vida. Y de la misma manera que por la desobediencia de un solo hombre, todos se convirtieron en pecadores, también por la obediencia de uno solo, todos se convertirán en justos.

Entonces se le acercó el tentador y le dijo: “Si eres Hijo de Dios, ordena que estas piedras se conviertan en pan.” Pero Jesús le respondió: “Dice la Escritura: El hombre no vive solamente de pan, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios.” Después el diablo lo llevó a la Ciudad Santa y lo puso en la parte más alta de la muralla del Templo. Y le dijo: “Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí abajo, pues la Escritura dice: Dios dará órdenes a sus ángeles y te llevarán en sus manos para que tus pies no tropiecen en piedra alguna.” Jesús replicó: “Dice también la Escritura: No tentarás al Señor tu Dios.” A continuación lo llevó el diablo a un monte muy alto y le mostró todas las naciones del mundo con todas sus grandezas y maravillas. Sebab itu, sama seperti dosa telah masuk ke dalam dunia oleh satu orang, dan oleh dosa itu juga maut, demikianlah maut itu telah menjalar kepada semua orang, karena semua orang telah berbuat dosa. Sebab sebelum hukum Taurat ada, telah ada dosa di dunia. Tetapi dosa itu tidak diperhitungkan kalau tidak ada hukum Taurat. Sungguhpun demikian maut telah berkuasa dari zaman Adam sampai kepada zaman Musa juga atas mereka, yang tidak berbuat dosa dengan cara yang sama seperti yang telah dibuat oleh Adam, yang adalah gambaran Dia yang akan datang. Tetapi karunia Allah tidaklah sama dengan pelanggaran Adam. Sebab, jika karena pelanggaran satu orang semua orang telah jatuh di dalam kuasa maut, jauh lebih besar lagi kasih karunia Allah dan karunia-Nya, yang dilimpahkan-Nya atas semua orang karena satu orang, yaitu Yesus Kristus. Dan kasih karunia tidak berimbangan dengan dosa satu orang. Sebab penghakiman atas satu pelanggaran itu telah mengakibatkan penghukuman, tetapi penganugerahan karunia atas banyak pelanggaran itu mengakibatkan pembenaran. Sebab, jika oleh dosa satu orang, maut telah berkuasa oleh satu orang itu, maka lebih benar lagi mereka, yang telah menerima kelimpahan kasih karunia dan anugerah kebenaran, akan hidup dan berkuasa oleh karena satu orang itu, yaitu Yesus Kristus. Sebab itu, sama seperti oleh satu pelanggaran semua orang beroleh penghukuman, demikian pula oleh satu perbuatan kebenaran semua orang beroleh pembenaran untuk hidup. Jadi sama seperti oleh ketidaktaatan satu orang semua orang telah menjadi orang berdosa, demikian pula oleh ketaatan satu orang semua orang menjadi orang benar.

Kemudian Iblis membawa-Nya ke Kota Suci dan menempatkan Dia di bubungan Bait Allah, lalu berkata kepada-Nya: "Jika Engkau Anak Allah, jatuhkanlah diri-Mu ke bawah, sebab ada tertulis: Mengenai Engkau Ia akan memerintahkan malaikat-malaikat-Nya dan mereka akan menatang Engkau di atas tangannya, supaya kaki-Mu jangan terantuk kepada batu." Yesus berkata kepadanya: "Ada pula tertulis: Janganlah engkau mencobai Tuhan, Allahmu!" Dan Iblis membawa-Nya pula ke atas gunung yang sangat tinggi dan memperlihatkan kepada-Nya semua kerajaan dunia dengan kemegahannya, dan berkata kepada-Nya: "Semua itu akan kuberikan kepada-Mu, jika Engkau sujud menyembah aku." Maka berkatalah Yesus kepadanya: "Enyahlah, Iblis! Sebab ada tertulis: Engkau harus menyembah Tuhan, Allahmu, dan hanya kepada Dia sajalah engkau berbakti!" Lalu Iblis meninggalkan Dia, dan lihatlah, malaikat-malaikat datang melayani Yesus.
When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days.

Ang kasalanan ay pumasok sa sanlibutan sa pamamagitan ng isang tao, at ang kamatayan ay pumasok sa pamamagitan ng kasalanan. Dahil dito, lumaganap ang kamatayan sa lahat ng tao sapagkat ang lahat ay nagkasala. Nasa sanlibutan na ang kasalanan bago ibigay ang Kautusan, ngunit kung walang kautusan, ang kasalanan ay hindi itinuturing na kasalanan. Gayunman, naghari pa rin ang kamatayan mula kay Adan hanggang kay Moises, pati sa mga taong hindi nagkasala tulad ng pagsuway ni Adan sa utos ng Diyos. Si Adan ay anyo ng isang darating. Subalit magkaiba ang dalawang ito dahil ang walang bayad na kaloob ng Diyos ay hindi katulad ng kasalanan ni Adan. Totoong maraming tao ang namatay dahil sa kasalanan ng isang tao. Ngunit ang kagandahang-loob ng Diyos ay mas dakila, gayundin ang kanyang walang bayad na kaloob sa maraming tao sa pamamagitan ng kagandahang-loob ng isang tao, si Jesu-Cristo. Ang kaloob na ito ay hindi katulad ng ibinunga ng pagsuway ni Adan. Sapagkat hatol na kaparusahan ang idinulot matapos na magawâ ang isang pagsuway, subalit kaloob na nagpapawalang-sala naman ang idinulot matapos magawâ ang maraming pagsuway. Sa pamamagitan ng pagsuway ng isang tao, naghari ang kamatayan. Ngunit sa pamamagitan din ng isang tao, si Jesu-Cristo, ang mga taong pinagpala nang sagana at itinuring na matuwid ng Diyos ay maghahari sa buhay. At kung paanong ang pagsuway ng isang tao ay nagdulot ng kaparusahan sa lahat, ang matuwid na ginawa rin ng isang tao ay nagdudulot ng pagpapawalang-sala at buhay sa lahat. Sapagkat kung naging makasalanan ang marami dahil sa pagsuway ng isang tao, marami rin ang mapapawalang-sala dahil sa pagsunod ng isang tao.

Sapagkat nasusulat, ‘Ang Panginoon mong Diyos ang dapat mong sambahin. At siya lamang ang dapat mong paglingkuran.’” Pagkatapos, iniwan na siya ng diyablo. Dumating naman ang mga anghel at siya'y pinaglingkuran nila.
