New American Bible readings
A reading from the first book of Kings.
In Gibeon, during the night, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and stated, "Ask what you want me to give you." Solomon answered, "Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a young boy who does not know how to undertake anything. Meantime, your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen — a people so great that they can neither be numbered nor counted. Give me, therefore, an understanding mind in governing your people that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this multitude of people of yours?" The Lord was pleased that Solomon had made this request. And he told him, "Because you have requested this rather than long life or wealth or even vengeance on your enemies; indeed, because you have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I shall grant you your request. I now give you a wise and discerning mind such as no one has had before you nor anyone after you shall ever have."
Second Reading (Romans 8: 28–30)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him, whom he has called according to his plan. Those whom he knew beforehand, he has also predestined to be like his Son, similar to him, so that he may be the First-born among many brothers and sisters. And so, those whom God predestined he called, and those whom he called he makes righteous, and to those whom he makes righteous he will give his Glory.
Gospel (Matthew 13: 44–52)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus stated this to his disciples, "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. The one who finds it buries it again; and so happy is he, that he goes and sells everything he has, in order to buy that field. Again the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who is looking for fine pearls. Once he has found a pearl of exceptional quality, he goes away, sells everything he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a big fishing net let down into the sea, in which every kind of fish has been caught. When the net is full, it is dragged ashore. Then they sit down and gather the good fish in buckets, but throw the worthless ones away. That is how it will be at the end of time; the angels will go out to separate the wicked from the just and throw them into the blazing furnace, where they will weep and gnash their teeth." Jesus asked, "Have you understood all these things?" "Yes," they answered. So he stated to them, "You will see that every teacher of the Kingdom is like a householder who can produce from his store things both new and old."

The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request. So God said to him: “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.”

Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.
Gospel (Matthew 13: 44–52)

Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

You are my portion, O Lord; I have promised to obey your word. Your law is more precious to me than heaps of silver and gold.
Comfort me then with your unfailing love, as you promised your servant. Let your mercy come to give me life, for your law is my delight.
I love your commandments more than gold — the finest gold. Because my steps are guided by your precepts, I hate all false ways.
Wonderful are your decrees; my soul cannot but keep them. As your words unfold, light is shed, and the simple-hearted understand.

• Wonderful are your decrees; therefore I observe them. The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple.

Pero yo soy todavía muy joven y no sé aún actuar. Tu servidor se las tiene que ver con tu pueblo, al que tú mismo elegiste, y es un pueblo tan numeroso que no se lo puede ni calcular ni contar. Concede pues a tu servidor que sepa juzgar a tu pueblo y pueda distinguir entre el bien y el mal. ¿Quién podría en realidad gobernar bien a un pueblo tan importante? Le agradó al Señor el pedido de Salomón, y Dios le dijo: “No has pedido para ti una larga vida, ni la riqueza ni la muerte de tus enemigos, y en cambio me pediste la inteligencia para ejercer la justicia. La respuesta es: Señor, amo tus mandamientos.
• El Señor es mi herencia: yo he decidido cumplir tus palabras. Para mí vale más la ley de tus labios que todo el oro y la plata.
• Consuélame con tu amor exitoso, como prometiste a tu sirviente. Que llegue hasta mí tu compasión, y viviré porque tu ley es toda mi alegría.
• Por eso amo tus mandamientos y los prefiero al oro más fino. Por eso me guío por tus preceptos y aborrezco todo camino engañoso.
• Tus prescripciones son admirables: por eso las observo. La explicación de tu palabra ilumina y da inteligencia al ignorante.

Evangelio (Mateo 13: 44–52)

Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos: El Reino de los Cielos es como un tesoro escondido en un campo. El hombre que lo descubre, lo vuelve a esconder; su alegría es tal, que va a vender todo lo que tiene y compra ese campo. El Reino de los Cielos se parece también a un negociante que se dedicaba a buscar perlas finas; si llega a sus manos una perla de gran valor, se va, vende cuanto tiene y la compra. Aquí tienen otra figura del Reino de los Cielos: una red que se ha echado al mar y que recoge peces de todas clases. Cuando está llena, los pescadores la sacan a la orilla, se sientan, escogen los peces buenos, los echan en canastos y tiran los que no sirven. Así sucederá al fin del mundo: vendrán los ángeles y separarán a los malos de entre los justos, y los arrojarán al horno ardiente. Allí será el llorar y el rechinar de dientes.” Preguntó Jesús: “¿Han entendido ustedes todas estas cosas?” Ellos le respondieron: “Sí.” Entonces Jesús dijo: “Está bien: cuando un maestro en religión ha sido instruido sobre el Reino de los Cielos, se parece a un padre de familia que siempre saca de sus armarios cosas nuevas y viejas.”

Sebab semua orang yang dipilih-Nya dari semula, mereka juga ditentukan-Nya dari semula untuk menjadi serupa dengan gambaran Anak-Nya, supaya Ia, Anak-Nya itu, menjadi yang sulung di antara banyak saudara. Dan mereka yang ditentukan-Nya dari semula, mereka itu juga dipanggil-Nya. Dan mereka yang dipanggil-Nya, mereka itu juga dibenarkan-Nya. Dan mereka yang dibenarkan-Nya, mereka itu juga dimuliakan-Nya.
