If you do harm them and they cry out to me, I will hear them and my anger will blaze and I will kill you with the sword, and your own wives will be widows and your own children orphans. If you lend money to any of my people who are poor, do not act like a moneylender and do not charge him interest. If ever you take a person's cloak as a pledge, you must give it back to him by sunset, for it is all the cover he has for his body. In what else will he sleep? And when he cries to me I will hear him, for I am full of pity.
Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 1: 5c–10)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.
You also know how we dealt with you for your sake. In return, you became followers of us an of the Lord when, on receiving the word, you experienced the joy of the Holy Spirit in the midst of great opposition. And you became a model for the faithful of Macedonia and Achaia, since from you the word of the Lord spread to Macedonia and Achaia, and still farther. The faith you have in God has become news in so many places that we need say no more about it. Others tell of how you responded to us and turn from idols to the Lord. For you serve the living and true God, and you wait for his Son from heaven whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who frees us from impending trial.
Gospel (Matthew 22: 34–40)

When the Pharisees heard how Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. One of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to test him with this question, "Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the Law?" Jesus answered, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and the most important of the commandments. But after this there is another one very similar to it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole Law and the Prophets are founded on these two commandments."

Thus says the LORD: "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans. "If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him. If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate."

Brothers and sisters: You know what sort of people we were among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit, so that you became a model for all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and in Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath.

He is the rock in whom I take refuge. He is my shield, my powerful savior, my stronghold. I call on the Lord, who is worthy of praise: he saves me from my enemies.
The Lord lives! Praised be my rock! "He has given victories to his king; he has shown his love to his anointed ones, to David, and to his descendants forever."

No maltratarás, ni oprimirás a los extranjeros, ya que también ustedes fueron extranjeros en tierra de Egipto. No harán daño a la viuda ni al huérfano. Si ustedes lo hacen, ellos clamarán a mí, y yo escucharé su clamor, se despertará mi enojo y a ustedes los mataré a espada; viudas quedarán sus esposas y huérfanos sus hijos. Si prestas dinero a uno de mi pueblo, al pobre, que tú conoces, no serás como el usurero, no le exigirás interés. Si tomas en prenda el manto de tu prójimo, se lo devolverás al ponerse el sol. ¿Con qué va a dormir? Y cuando me clama, lo oiré, porque me lleno con piedad.

Segunda lectura (Tesalonicenses 1: 5C–10)

Ya saben cómo procedimos cuando estuvimos allí al servicio de ustedes. Y ustedes, a su vez, imitaron nuestro ejemplo y el del Señor, recibiendo la Palabra en medio de muchas dificultades, con la alegría que da el Espíritu Santo. Así llegaron a ser un modelo para todos los creyentes de Macedonia y Acaya. En efecto, de allí partió la Palabra del Señor, que no sólo resonó en Macedonia y Acaya: en todas partes se ha difundido la fe que ustedes tienen en Dios, de manera que no es necesario hablar de esto. Ellos mismos cuentan cómo ustedes me han recibido y cómo se convirtieron a Dios, abandonando los ídolos para servir al Dios vivo y verdadero, y esperar a su Hijo, que vendrá desde el cielo: Jesús, a quien él resucitó y que nos libra de la ira venidera.
Evangelio (Mateo 22: 34–40)

Cuando los fariseos supieron que Jesús había hecho callar a los saduceos, se juntaron en torno a él. Uno de ellos, que era maestro de la Ley, trató de ponerlo a prueba con esta pregunta: “Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la Ley?” Jesús le dijo: “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el gran mandamiento, el primero. Pero hay otro muy parecido: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Toda la Ley y los Profetas se fundamentan en estos dos mandamientos.”

Huwag din ninyong aapihin ang mga balo at ang mga ulila. Kapag inapi ninyo sila at dumaing sa akin, tiyak na papakinggan ko sila. Kahit dumanas kayo ng napakaraming paghihirap, tinanggap ninyo ang salita ng Diyos nang may kagalakang mula sa Espiritu Santo. Kaya't naging huwaran kayo ng mga mananampalataya sa Macedonia at Acaya, sapagkat hindi lamang ang salita ng Panginoon ang lumaganap sa Macedonia at Acaya sa pamamagitan ninyo.
