First reading (2 Maccabees 7: 1–2 and 9–14)
A reading from the second book of the Maccabees.
It happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors." At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying." After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again." Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing. After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way. When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the hope God gives of being raised up by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life."
Second reading (2 Thessalonians 2:16 – 3:5)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.
Brothers and sisters: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among you, and that we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. We are confident of you in the Lord that what we instruct you, you are doing and will continue to do. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ.
Gospel (Luke 20: 27–38)

Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her." Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out 'Lord,' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive."

One of them, speaking on behalf of all, stated, "What do you want to find out from us? We are prepared to die right now rather than break the law of our ancestors." At the moment of his last breath, he stated, "Murderer, you now dismiss us from life, but the King of the world will raise us up. He will give us eternal life since we die for his laws." After this, they punished the third. He stuck his tongue out when asked to, bravely stretched forth his hands, and even had the courage to say: "I have received these limbs from God, but for love of his laws I now consider them as nothing. For I hope to recover them from God." The king and his court were touched by the courage of this young man, so unconcerned about his own sufferings. When this one was dead, they subjected the fourth to the same torture. At the point of death, he cried out, "I would rather die at the hands of mortals, and wait for the promises of God who will raise us up; you, however, shall have no part in the resurrection of life."
Second reading (2 Thessalonians 2:16 – 3:5)

Brothers and sisters; May Christ Jesus our Lord who has loved us, may God our Father, who in his mercy gives us everlasting comfort and true hope, strengthen you. May he encourage your hearts and make you steadfast in every good work and word. Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the Word of God may finish the race and be crowned as it was with you. May God guard us from wicked and evil people, since not everyone has faith. The Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and keep you safe from the Evil One. Besides, we have in the Lord this confidence that you are doing and will continue to do what we order you. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the perseverance for the sake of Christ.

Some Sadducees arrived. These people claim that there is no resurrection and they asked Jesus this question, "Master, in the Scripture Moses told us: 'If anyone dies leaving a wife but no children, his brother must take the wife, and the child to be born will be regarded as the child of the deceased man.' Now, there were seven brothers; the first married a wife, but he died without children; and the second and the third took the wife; in fact all seven died leaving no children. Last of all the woman died. On the day of the resurrection, to which of them will the woman be wife? For the seven had her as wife." And Jesus replied, "Taking husband or wife is proper to people of his world, but for those who are considered worthy of the world to come and of resurrection from the dead, there is no more marriage. Besides, they cannot die for they are like the angels. They too are sons and daughters of God because they are born of the resurrection. Yes, the dead will be raised, and even Moses implied it in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. For he is God of the living and not of the dead, and for him all are alive."

También fueron detenidos siete hermanos con su madre, y el rey quiso obligarlos, haciéndoles azotar con correas de cuero, a comer carne de cerdo prohibida por la Ley. Uno de ellos tomó la palabra en nombre de todos y dijo: “¿Qué exiges y qué quieres saber de nosotros? Estamos dispuestos a morir antes que desobedecer a la Ley de nuestros padres.” En el momento de dar su último suspiro dijo: “¡No eres más que un criminal! Nos quitas la vida presente, pero el Rey del Universo nos resucitará a una vida eterna, a nosotros que morimos por fidelidad a sus leyes.” Después de éste torturaron al tercero; cuando el verdugo se lo pidió, presentó inmediatamente la lengua y extendió sin vacilar sus manos. Tuvo la valentía de declarar: “Del Cielo he recibido estas manos, pero las sacrifico por sus leyes, y de él espero que me las devuelva.” Hasta el mismo rey y su corte quedaron asombrados de la valentía de ese joven que no tomaba en cuenta para nada sus sufrimientos. Cuando murió, sometieron al cuarto a los mismos suplicios. Estando a punto de morir, dijo: “Felices los que mueren a manos de los hombres, teniendo la esperanza recibida de Dios de ser resucitados por él; pero para ti no habrá resurrección para la vida.”

Que nuestro Señor Jesucristo y Dios, nuestro Padre, que nos amó y nos dio gratuitamente un consuelo eterno y una feliz esperanza, los reconforte y fortalezca en toda obra y en toda palabra buena. Finalmente, hermanos, rueguen por nosotros, para que la Palabra del Señor se propague rápidamente y sea glorificada como lo es entre ustedes. Rueguen también para que nos vemos libres de los hombres malvados y perversos, ya que no todos tienen fe. Pero el Señor es fiel: él los fortalecerá y los preservará del Maligno. Nosotros tenemos plena confianza en el Señor de que ustedes cumplen y seguirán cumpliendo nuestras disposiciones. Que el Señor los encamine hacia el amor de Dios y les dé la perseverancia de Cristo.

Se le acercaron algunos saduceos, que niegan la resurrección, y le dijeron: “Maestro, Moisés nos ha ordenado: ‘Si alguien está casado y muere sin tener hijos, que su hermano, para darle descendencia, se case con la viuda.’ Ahora bien, había siete hermanos. El primero se casó y murió sin tener hijos. El segundo se casó con la viuda, y luego el tercero. Y así murieron los siete sin dejar descendencia. Finalmente, también murió la mujer. Cuando resuciten los muertos, ¿de quién será esposa, ya que los siete la tuvieron por mujer?” Jesús les respondió: “En este mundo los hombres y las mujeres se casa, pero los que sean juzgados dignos de participar del mundo futuro y de la resurrección, no se casarán. Ya no pueden morir, porque son semejantes a los ángeles y son hijos de Dios, al ser hijos de la resurrección. Que los muertos van resucitar, Moisés lo ha dado a entender en el pasaje de la zarza, cuando llama al Señor el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob. Isa sa mga anak ang nangahas tumayo at nagsalita, “Ano ba ang nais ninyong mangyari sa pagpapahirap sa amin? Matamis pa sa amin ang mamatay kaysa lumabag sa mga kautusan ng aming mga ninuno!” Ngunit bago namatay, sinabi niya nang malakas sa hari, “Kasumpa-sumpang halimaw! Maaari mong kunin ang buhay namin dito sa lupa, ngunit bubuhayin kaming muli ng Hari ng buong daigdig upang hindi na muling mamatay, sapagkat sinusunod namin ang kanyang mga utos.” Ganoon ding parusa ang sinapit ng ikatlong anak. Aliwin nawa kayo ng ating Panginoong Jesu-Cristo mismo at ng ating Diyos Ama na umibig sa atin, at dahil sa kanyang kagandahang-loob ay nagbigay sa atin ng walang hanggang kaaliwan at magandang pag-asa. Bigyan nawa kayo ng matatag na kalooban para sa lahat ng mabuting gawa at salita. Mga kapatid, bilang pagtatapos, ipanalangin ninyo kami upang ang salita ng Panginoon ay mabilis na lumaganap at parangalan ng lahat, tulad ng ginawa ninyo. Idalangin din ninyong maligtas kami sa mga taong mapaminsala at masasama, sapagkat hindi lahat ay may pananampalataya sa Diyos. Ngunit tapat ang Panginoon; siya ang magpapatatag at mag-iingat sa inyo laban sa Masama. Dahil sa Panginoon, malaki ang aming pagtitiwala na sinusunod ninyo at patuloy na susundin ang mga itinuro namin sa inyo. Nag-asawa ang panganay at namatay na walang anak. Nagpakasal sa biyuda ang pangalawa, subalit ito'y namatay ding walang anak. Ganoon din ang nangyari sa pangatlo hanggang sa pampito. At silang lahat ay namatay na walang anak. Sa kahuli-hulihan, namatay naman ang babae. Ngayon, sa muling pagkabuhay, sino sa pito ang kikilalaning asawa ng babae, yamang silang lahat ay napangasawa niya?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Sa buhay na ito, ang mga lalaki at mga babae ay nag-aasawa. Ngunit ang mga lalaki't babaing karapat-dapat na mapasama sa muling pagkabuhay ay hindi na mag-aasawa. Hindi na rin sila mamamatay sapagkat matutulad sila sa mga anghel. Sila'y mga anak ng Diyos dahil sila'y napabilang sa mga muling binuhay. Maging si Moises ay nagpapatunay na muling binubuhay ang mga patay. Sapagkat sa salaysay tungkol sa nagliliyab na mababang puno, ang Panginoon ay tinawag niyang ‘Diyos ni Abraham, Diyos ni Isaac at Diyos ni Jacob.’ Ang Diyos ay hindi Diyos ng mga patay kundi ng mga buháy, sa kanya'y nabubuhay ang lahat.”

Terjadi pula yang berikut ini: Tujuh orang bersaudara serta ibu mereka ditangkap. Lalu dengan siksaan cambuk dan rotan mau dipaksa oleh sang raja untuk makan daging babi yang haram. Maka seorang dari antara mereka, yakni yang menjadi juru bicara, berkata begini: "Apakah yang hendak baginda tanyakan kepada kami dan apakah yang hendak baginda ketahui? Kami lebih bersedia mati dari pada melanggar hukum nenek moyang." Ketika sudah hampir putus nyawanya berkatalah ia: "Memang benar kau, bangsat, dapat menghapus kami dari hidup di dunia ini, tetapi Raja alam semesta akan membangkitkan kami untuk kehidupan kekal, oleh karena kami mati demi hukum-hukum-Nya!" Sesudah itu maka yang ketiga disengsarakan. Ketika diminta segera dikeluarkannya lidahnya dan dengan berani dikedangkannya tangannya juga. Dengan berani berkatalah ia: "Dari Surga aku telah menerima anggota-anggota ini dan demi hukum-hukum Tuhan kupandang semuanya itu bukan apa-apa. Tetapi aku berharap akan mendapat kembali semuanya dari pada-Nya!" Sampai-sampai sang raja sendiri serta pengiringnyapun tercengang-cengang atas semangat pemuda itu yang memandang kesengsaraan itu bukan apa-apa. Sesudah yang ketiga berpulang, maka yang keempat disiksa dan dipuntungkan secara demikian pula. Ketika sudah dekat pada akhir hidupnya berkatalah ia: "Sungguh baiklah berpulang oleh tangan manusia dengan harapan yang dianugerahkan Allah sendiri, bahwa kami akan dibangkitkan kembali oleh-Nya. Sedangkan bagi baginda tidak ada kebangkitan untuk kehidupan."

Selanjutnya, saudara-saudara, berdoalah untuk kami, supaya firman Tuhan beroleh kemajuan dan dimuliakan, sama seperti yang telah terjadi di antara kamu, dan supaya kami terlepas dari para pengacau dan orang-orang jahat, sebab bukan semua orang beroleh iman. Tetapi Tuhan adalah setia. Ia akan menguatkan hatimu dan memelihara kamu terhadap yang jahat. Dan kami percaya dalam Tuhan, bahwa apa yang kami pesankan kepadamu, kamu lakukan dan akan kamu lakukan. Kiranya Tuhan tetap menujukan hatimu kepada kasih Allah dan kepada ketabahan Kristus.

Mereka bertanya kepada-Nya: "Guru, Musa menuliskan perintah ini untuk kita: Jika seorang, yang mempunyai saudara laki-laki, mati sedang isterinya masih ada, tetapi ia tidak meninggalkan anak, saudaranya harus kawin dengan isterinya itu dan membangkitkan keturunan bagi saudaranya itu. Adalah tujuh orang bersaudara. Yang pertama kawin dengan seorang perempuan lalu mati dengan tidak meninggalkan anak. Lalu perempuan itu dikawini oleh yang kedua, dan oleh yang ketiga dan demikianlah berturut-turut oleh ketujuh saudara itu, mereka semuanya mati dengan tidak meninggalkan anak. Akhirnya perempuan itu pun mati. Bagaimana sekarang dengan perempuan itu, siapakah di antara orang-orang itu yang menjadi suaminya pada hari kebangkitan? Sebab ketujuhnya telah beristerikan dia." Jawab Yesus kepada mereka: "Orang-orang dunia ini kawin dan dikawinkan, tetapi mereka yang dianggap layak untuk mendapat bagian dalam dunia yang lain itu dan dalam kebangkitan dari antara orang mati, tidak kawin dan tidak dikawinkan. Sebab mereka tidak dapat mati lagi; mereka sama seperti malaikat-malaikat dan mereka adalah anak-anak Allah, karena mereka telah dibangkitkan. Tentang bangkitnya orang-orang mati, Musa telah memberitahukannya dalam nas tentang semak duri, di mana Tuhan disebut Allah Abraham, Allah Ishak dan Allah Yakub. Ia bukan Allah orang mati, melainkan Allah orang hidup, sebab di hadapan Dia semua orang hidup."

また次のようなこともあった。七人の兄弟が母親と共に捕らえられ、鞭や皮ひもで暴行を受け、律法で禁じられている豚肉を口にするよう、王に強制された。彼らの一人が皆に代わって言った。「いったいあなたは、我々から何を聞き出し、何を知ろうというのか。我々は父祖伝来の律法に背くくらいなら、いつでも死ぬ用意はできているのだ。」息を引き取る間際に、彼は言った。「邪悪な者よ、あなたはこの世から我々の命を消し去ろうとしているが、世界の王は、律法のために死ぬ我々を、永遠の新しい命へとよみがえらせてくださるのだ。」彼に続いて三番目の者もなぶりものにされた。彼は命ぜられると即座に舌を差し出し、勇敢に両手を差し伸べ、毅然として言った。「わたしは天からこの舌や手を授かったが、主の律法のためなら、惜しいとは思わない。わたしは、主からそれらを再びいただけるのだと確信している。」そこで、王自身も、供の者たちも、苦痛をいささかも意に介さないこの若者の精神に驚嘆した。やがて彼も息を引き取ると、彼らは四番目の者も同様に苦しめ、拷問にかけた。死ぬ間際に彼は言った。「たとえ人の手で、死に渡されようとも、神が再び立ち上がらせてくださるという希望をこそ選ぶべきである。だがあなたは、よみがえって再び命を得ることはない。」
第二読み物(テサロニケ第二第2章：第16詩–第3章：第5詩)
この読み物はテサロニケ第二への手紙です。
わたしたちの主イエス・キリスト御自身、ならびに、わたしたちを愛して、永遠の慰めと確かな希望とを恵みによって与えてくださる、わたしたちの父である神が、どうか、あなたがたの心を励まし、また強め、いつも善い働きをし、善い言葉を語る者としてくださるように。終わりに、兄弟たち、わたしたちのために祈ってください。主の言葉が、あなたがたのところでそうであったように、速やかに宣べ伝えられ、あがめられるように、また、わたしたちが道に外れた悪人どもから逃れられるように、と祈ってください。すべての人に、信仰があるわけではないのです。しかし、主は真実な方です。必ずあなたがたを強め、悪い者から守ってくださいます。そして、わたしたちが命令することを、あなたがたは現に実行しており、また、これからもきっと実行してくれることと、主によって確信しています。どうか、主が、あなたがたに神の愛とキリストの忍耐とを深く悟らせてくださるように。
福音書（ルカ第20章：第27詩–第38詩）
この読み物はルカの福音書です。
さて、復活があることを否定するサドカイ派の人々が何人か近寄って来て、イエスに尋ねた。「先生、モーセはわたしたちのために書いています。『ある人の兄が妻をめとり、子がなくて死んだ場合、その弟は兄嫁と結婚して、兄の跡継ぎをもうけねばならない』と。ところで、七人の兄弟がいました。長男が妻を迎えましたが、子がないまま死にました。次男、三男と次々にこの女を妻にしましたが、七人とも同じように子供を残さないで死にました。最後にその女も死にました。すると復活の時、その女はだれの妻になるのでしょうか。七人ともその女を妻にしたのです。」イエスは言われた。「この世の子らはめとったり嫁いだりするが、次の世に入って死者の中から復活するのにふさわしいとされた人々は、めとることも嫁ぐこともない。この人たちは、もはや死ぬことがない。天使に等しい者であり、復活にあずかる者として、神の子だからである。死者が復活することは、モーセも『柴』の個所で、主をアブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神と呼んで、示している。神は死んだ者の神ではなく、生きている者の神なのだ。すべての人は、神によって生きているからである。」
