A reading from the first book of Samuel.
The LORD said to Samuel: “Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons.” As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is here before him.” But the LORD said to Samuel: “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart.” In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any one of these.” Then Samuel asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.” Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance. The LORD said, “There—anoint him, for this is the one!” Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.
Second reading (Ephesians 5: 8–14)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”
Gospel (John 9: 1–41)

As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” —which means Sent—. So he went and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?” Some said, "It is," but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” He said, “I am.” So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” He replied, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see.” And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.” They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.” So some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man do such signs?” And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, “What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight. They asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How does he now see?” His parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; question him.” So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give God the praise! We know that this man is a sinner.” He replied, “If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.” So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” They ridiculed him and said, “You are that man’s disciple; we are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from.” The man answered and said to them, “This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.” They answered and said to him, “You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “I do believe, Lord,” and he worshiped him. Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.

Therefore it is stated: "Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead that the light of Christ may shine on you."

Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made mud paste and opened his eyes. The Pharisees asked him again, "How did you recover your sight?" Some of the Pharisees stated, "This man is not from God, for he works on the sabbath;" but others wondered, "How can a sinner perform such miraculous signs?" They were divided and they questioned the blind man again, "What do you think of this man who opened your eyes?" And he answered, "He is a prophet." After all this, the Jews refused to believe that the man had been blind and had recovered his sight; so they called his parents and asked them, "Is this your son? You say that he was born blind, how is it that he now sees?" The parents answered, "He really is our son and he was born blind; but how it is that he now sees, we do not know, neither do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is old enough. Let him speak for himself." The parents stated this because they feared the Jews who had already agreed that whoever confessed Jesus to be the Christ was to be expelled. Because of this his parents stated, "He is old enough, ask him." So a second time the Pharisees called the man who had been blind, and they stated to him, "Tell us the truth; we know that this man is a sinner." He replied, "I do not know whether he is a sinner or not; I only know that I was blind and now I see." They stated to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He replied, "I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?" Then they started to insult him. "Become his disciple yourself! We are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man we do not know where he comes from." The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.

You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.

Te envío donde Jesé de Belén, porque me escogí un rey entre sus hijos.” Cuando entraron, Samuel divisó a Eliab y pensó: “Seguramente ése será el que el Señor va a consagrar.” Pero el Señor dijo a Samuel: “Olvídate de su apariencia y de su gran altura, lo he descartado. Es verdad que resulta vergonzoso aun mencionar las cosas que esa gente hace ocultamente. Pero cuando se las pone de manifiesto, aparecen iluminadas por la luz, porque todo lo que se pone de manifiesto es luz. Sin embargo, los judíos no querían creer que ese hombre había sido ciego y que había llegado a ver, hasta que llamaron a sus padres y les preguntaron: “¿Es este el hijo de ustedes, el que dicen que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora ve?” Sus padres respondieron: “Sabemos que es nuestro hijo y que nació ciego, pero cómo es que ahora ve y quién le abrió los ojos, no lo sabemos. Pregúntenle a él: tiene edad para responder por su cuenta.” Sus padres dijeron esto por temor a los judíos, que ya se habían puesto de acuerdo para excluir de la sinagoga al que reconociera a Jesús como Mesías. Por esta razón dijeron: “Tiene bastante edad, pregúntenle a él.” Los judíos llamaron por segunda vez al que había sido ciego y le dijeron: “Glorifica a Dios. Nosotros sabemos que ese hombre es un pecador.” “Yo no sé si es un pecador, respondió; lo que sé es que antes yo era ciego y ahora veo.” Ellos le preguntaron: “¿Qué te ha hecho? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?” Él les respondió: “Ya se lo dije y ustedes no me han escuchado. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo de nuevo? ¿También ustedes quieren hacerse discípulos suyos?” Ellos lo injuriaron y le dijeron: “¡Tú serás discípulo de ese hombre; nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés! Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero si al que lo honra y cumple su voluntad. Nunca se oyó decir que alguien haya abierto los ojos a un ciego de nacimiento. Si este hombre no viniera de Dios, no podría hacer nada.” Ellos le respondieron: “Tú naciste lleno de pecado, y ¿quieres darnos lecciones?” Y lo echaron. Jesús se enteró de que lo habían echado y, al encontrarlo, le preguntó: “¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?” Él respondió: “¿Quién es, Señor, para que crea en él?” Jesús le dijo: “Tú lo has visto: es el que te está hablando.” Entonces él exclamó: “Creo, Señor”, y se postró ante él. Te envío donde Jesé de Belén, porque me escogí un rey entre sus hijos.” Cuando entraron, Samuel divisó a Eliab y pensó: “Seguramente ése será el que Yahvé va a consagrar.” Pero Yahvé dijo a Samuel: “Olvídate de su apariencia y de su gran altura, lo he descartado. Porque Dios no ve las cosas como los hombres: el hombre se fija en las apariencias pero Dios ve el corazón.” Finalmente Jesé hizo pasar a sus siete hijos ante Samuel, y Samuel decía a Jesé: “Yahvé no ha elegido a ninguno de estos.” Entonces Samuel dijo a Jesé: “¿Esos son todos tus hijos?” Respondió: “Todavía falta el menor, que cuida el rebaño.” Samuel le dijo: “Mándalo a buscar porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que no esté aquí.” Fueron pues a buscarlo y llegó; era rubio con hermosos ojos y una bella apariencia. Yahvé dijo entonces: “Párate y conságralo; es él.” Samuel tomó su cuerno con aceite y lo consagró en medio de sus hermanos.

Antes, ustedes eran tinieblas, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de la luz. Ahora bien, el fruto de la luz es la bondad, la justicia y la verdad. Sepan discernir lo que agrada al Señor, y no participen de las obras estériles de las tinieblas; al contrario, pónganlas en evidencia. Es verdad que resulta vergonzoso aun mencionar las cosas que esa gente hace ocultamente. Pero cuando se las pone de manifiesto, aparecen iluminadas por la luz, porque todo lo que se pone de manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despiértate, tú que duermes, levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo te iluminará.

At sinabi ni Yahweh kay Samuel, “Siya ang pinili ko; buhusan mo siya ng langis.” Kinuha ni Samuel ang sungay na sisidlan ng langis, at binuhusan niya si David ng langis sa harapan ng kanyang mga kapatid. At nilukuban si David ng Espiritu ni Yahweh.

Huwag kayong makibahagi sa mga gawain ng kadiliman na walang ibinubungang mabuti. Sa halip ay ibunyag ninyo ang mga iyon. Kahiya-hiyang mabanggit man lamang ang mga bagay na iyon na ginagawa nila nang lihim. Ang lahat ng nalalantad sa liwanag ay nakikilala kung ano talaga ang mga iyon, at nalalantad ang lahat dahil sa liwanag. Kaya't sinasabi, “Gumising ka, ikaw na natutulog, bumangon ka mula sa libingan, at liliwanagan ka ni Cristo.”

Ayaw maniwala ng mga Judio na siya'y talagang dating bulag na ngayo'y nakakakita na kaya't ipinatawag nila ang kanyang mga magulang. “Anak nga ba ninyo ito? Talaga bang siya'y ipinanganak na bulag? Ano'ng nangyari at nakakakita na siya ngayon?” tanong nila. Sumagot ang kanyang mga magulang, “Alam naming anak namin siya at alam din naming siya'y ipinanganak na bulag. Ngunit hindi po namin alam kung ano ang nangyari at nakakakita na siya ngayon, o kung sino ang nagpagaling sa kanya. Siya na po ang tanungin ninyo. Nasa hustong gulang na siya. Makakapagsalita na siya para sa kanyang sarili.” Ganito ang sinabi ng kanyang mga magulang dahil sa kanilang takot sa mga pinuno ng mga Judio. Sapagkat pinagkaisahan na ng mga Judio na ang sinumang magpahayag na si Jesus ang Cristo ay ititiwalag sa sinagoga. Ito ang dahilan kung bakit sinabi ng kanyang mga magulang, “Siya'y nasa hustong gulang na, siya ang tanungin ninyo.” Muli nilang ipinatawag ang dating bulag at sinabi sa kanya, “Sa ngalan ng Diyos, magsabi ka ng totoo. Alam naming ang taong iyon ay makasalanan.” Sumagot siya, “Hindi ko po alam kung siya'y makasalanan, o hindi. Isang bagay po ang alam ko; ako'y dating bulag, subalit ngayo'y nakakakita na.” “Ano ang ginawa niya sa iyo? Paano niya pinagaling ang iyong mga mata?” tanong nila. Sumagot siya, “Sinabi ko na po sa inyo, at ayaw naman ninyo akong paniwalaan. Bakit gusto ninyong marinig muli? Nais ba ninyong maging alagad din niya?” At siya'y kanilang nilait, “Ikaw ang alagad niya! Kami'y mga alagad ni Moises. Nalalaman naming nagsalita ang Diyos kay Moises ngunit ang taong iyon, ni hindi namin alam kung saan siya nanggaling!” Sumagot ang lalaki, “Iyan nga po ang nakapagtataka! Hindi ninyo alam kung saan siya nanggaling, gayunma'y pinagaling niya ang aking mga mata. Alam nating hindi pinapakinggan ng Diyos ang mga makasalanan, ngunit pinapakinggan niya ang mga sumasamba sa kanya at sumusunod sa kanyang kalooban. Mula pa nang likhain ang mundo ay wala pa tayong nabalitaang nakapagpagaling ng mata ng taong ipinanganak na bulag. Wala pong magagawa ang taong iyon kung siya'y hindi mula sa Diyos!” Sumagot sila, “Ipinanganak kang lubos na makasalanan at ngayo'y nais mo pa kaming turuan!” At siya'y kanilang itiniwalag. Nabalitaan ni Jesus na ang lalaking pinagaling niya ay itiniwalag ng mga Pariseo. Kaya't nang matagpuan niya ito ay kanyang tinanong, “Sumasampalataya ka ba sa Anak ng Tao?” Sumagot ang lalaki, “Sino po ba siya, Ginoo? Sabihin ninyo sa akin upang ako'y sumampalataya sa kanya.” “Siya'y nakita mo na. Siya ang kausap mo ngayon,” wika ni Jesus. “Sumasampalataya po ako, Panginoon!” sabi ng lalaki. At sinamba niya si Jesus. Sinabi ni Jesus, “Naparito ako sa mundong ito upang humatol, at nang sa gayo'y makakita ang mga bulag at mabulag naman ang mga nakakakita.” Narinig ito ng ilang Pariseong naroon at siya'y kanilang tinanong, “Ibig mo bang sabihi'y mga bulag din kami?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Kung kayo nga'y bulag, hindi sana kayo hahatulang maysala. Ngunit dahil sinasabi ninyong nakakakita kayo, nananatili kayong maysala.”

Berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Samuel: "Isilah tabung tandukmu dengan minyak dan pergilah. Aku mengutus engkau kepada Isai, orang Betlehem itu, sebab di antara anak-anaknya telah Kupilih seorang raja bagi-Ku." Ketika mereka itu masuk dan Samuel melihat Eliab, lalu pikirnya: "Sungguh, di hadapan TUHAN sekarang berdiri yang diurapi-Nya." Tetapi berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Samuel: "Janganlah pandang parasnya atau perawakan yang tinggi, sebab Aku telah menolaknya. Bukan yang dilihat manusia yang dilihat Allah; manusia melihat apa yang di depan mata, tetapi TUHAN melihat hati." Demikianlah Isai menyuruh ketujuh anaknya lewat di depan Samuel, tetapi Samuel berkata kepada Isai: "Semuanya ini tidak dipilih TUHAN." Lalu Samuel berkata kepada Isai: "Inikah anakmu semuanya?" Jawabnya: "Masih tinggal yang bungsu, tetapi sedang menggembalakan kambing domba." Kata Samuel kepada Isai: "Suruhlah memanggil dia, sebab kita tidak akan duduk makan, sebelum ia datang ke mari." Kemudian disuruhnyalah menjemput dia. Ia kemerah-merahan, matanya indah dan parasnya elok. Lalu TUHAN berfirman: "Bangkitlah, urapilah dia, sebab inilah dia." Samuel mengambil tabung tanduk yang berisi minyak itu dan mengurapi Daud di tengah-tengah saudara-saudaranya.

Memang dahulu kamu adalah kegelapan, tetapi sekarang kamu adalah terang di dalam Tuhan. Sebab itu hiduplah sebagai anak-anak terang, karena terang hanya berbuahkan kebaikan dan keadilan dan kebenaran, dan ujilah apa yang berkenan kepada Tuhan. Janganlah turut mengambil bagian dalam perbuatan-perbuatan kegelapan yang tidak berbuahkan apa-apa, tetapi sebaliknya telanjangilah perbuatan-perbuatan itu. Sebab menyebutkan saja pun apa yang dibuat oleh mereka di tempat-tempat yang tersembunyi telah memalukan. Tetapi segala sesuatu yang sudah ditelanjangi oleh terang itu menjadi nampak, sebab semua yang nampak adalah terang. Itulah sebabnya dikatakan: "Bangunlah, hai kamu yang tidur dan bangkitlah dari antara orang mati dan Kristus akan bercahaya atas kamu."

Kita harus mengerjakan pekerjaan Dia yang mengutus Aku, selama masih siang; akan datang malam, di mana tidak ada seorang pun yang dapat bekerja. Selama Aku di dalam dunia, Akulah terang dunia." Setelah Ia mengatakan semuanya itu, Ia meludah ke tanah, dan mengaduk ludah-Nya itu dengan tanah, lalu mengoleskannya pada mata orang buta tadi dan berkata kepadanya: "Pergilah, basuhlah dirimu dalam kolam Siloam." Siloam artinya: "Yang diutus." Maka pergilah orang itu, ia membasuh dirinya lalu kembali dengan matanya sudah melek. Tetapi tetangga-tetangganya dan mereka, yang dahulu mengenalnya sebagai pengemis, berkata: "Bukankah dia ini, yang selalu mengemis?" Ada yang berkata: "Benar, dialah ini." Ada pula yang berkata: "Bukan, tetapi ia serupa dengan dia." Orang itu sendiri berkata: "Benar, akulah itu." Kata mereka kepadanya: "Bagaimana matamu menjadi melek?" Jawabnya: "Orang yang disebut Yesus itu mengaduk tanah, mengoleskannya pada mataku dan berkata kepadaku: Pergilah ke Siloam dan basuhlah dirimu. Lalu aku pergi dan setelah aku membasuh diriku, aku dapat melihat." Lalu mereka berkata kepadanya: "Di manakah Dia?" Jawabnya: "Aku tidak tahu." Lalu mereka membawa orang yang tadinya buta itu kepada orang-orang Farisi. Adapun hari waktu Yesus mengaduk tanah dan memelekkan mata orang itu, adalah hari Sabat. Karena itu orang-orang Farisi pun bertanya kepadanya, bagaimana matanya menjadi melek. Jawabnya: "Ia mengoleskan adukan tanah pada mataku, lalu aku membasuh diriku, dan sekarang aku dapat melihat." Maka kata sebagian orang-orang Farisi itu: "Orang ini tidak datang dari Allah, sebab Ia tidak memelihara hari Sabat." Sebagian pula berkata: "Bagaimanakah seorang berdosa dapat membuat mujizat yang demikian?" Maka timbullah pertentangan di antara mereka. Lalu kata mereka pula kepada orang buta itu: "Dan engkau, apakah katamu tentang Dia, karena Ia telah memelekkan matamu?" Jawabnya: "Ia adalah seorang nabi."
Tetapi orang-orang Yahudi itu tidak percaya, bahwa tadinya ia buta dan baru dapat melihat lagi, sampai mereka memanggil orang tuanya dan bertanya kepada mereka: "Inikah anakmu, yang kamu katakan bahwa ia lahir buta? Kalau begitu bagaimanakah ia sekarang dapat melihat?" Jawab orang tua itu: "Yang kami tahu ialah, bahwa dia ini anak kami dan bahwa ia lahir buta, tetapi bagaimana ia sekarang dapat melihat, kami tidak tahu, dan siapa yang memelekkan matanya, kami tidak tahu juga. Tanyakanlah kepadanya sendiri, ia sudah dewasa, ia dapat berkata-kata untuk dirinya sendiri." Orang tuanya berkata demikian, karena mereka takut kepada orang-orang Yahudi, sebab orang-orang Yahudi itu telah sepakat bahwa setiap orang yang mengaku Dia sebagai Mesias, akan dikucilkan. Itulah sebabnya maka orang tuanya berkata: "Ia telah dewasa, tanyakanlah kepadanya sendiri." Lalu mereka memanggil sekali lagi orang yang tadinya buta itu dan berkata kepadanya: "Katakanlah kebenaran di hadapan Allah; kami tahu bahwa orang itu orang berdosa." Jawabnya: "Apakah orang itu orang berdosa, aku tidak tahu; tetapi satu hal aku tahu, yaitu bahwa aku tadinya buta, dan sekarang dapat melihat." Kata mereka kepadanya: "Apakah yang diperbuat-Nya padamu? Bagaimana Ia memelekkan matamu?" Jawabnya: "Telah kukatakan kepadamu, dan kamu tidak mendengarkannya; mengapa kamu hendak mendengarkannya lagi? Barangkali kamu mau menjadi murid-Nya juga?" Sambil mengejek mereka berkata kepadanya: "Engkau murid orang itu tetapi kami murid-murid Musa. Kami tahu, bahwa Allah telah berfirman kepada Musa, tetapi tentang Dia itu kami tidak tahu dari mana Ia datang." Jawab orang itu kepada mereka: "Aneh juga bahwa kamu tidak tahu dari mana Ia datang, sedangkan Ia telah memelekkan mataku. Kita tahu, bahwa Allah tidak mendengarkan orang-orang berdosa, melainkan orang-orang yang saleh dan yang melakukan kehendak-Nya. Dari dahulu sampai sekarang tidak pernah terdengar, bahwa ada orang yang memelekkan mata orang yang lahir buta. Jikalau orang itu tidak datang dari Allah, Ia tidak dapat berbuat apa-apa." Jawab mereka: "Engkau ini lahir sama sekali dalam dosa dan engkau hendak mengajar kami?" Lalu mereka mengusir dia ke luar. Yesus mendengar bahwa ia telah diusir ke luar oleh mereka. Kemudian Ia bertemu dengan dia dan berkata: "Percayakah engkau kepada Anak Manusia?" Jawabnya: "Siapakah Dia, Tuhan? Supaya aku percaya kepada-Nya." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Engkau bukan saja melihat Dia; tetapi Dia yang sedang berkata-kata dengan engkau, Dialah itu!" Katanya: "Aku percaya, Tuhan!" Lalu ia sujud menyembah-Nya. Kata Yesus: "Aku datang ke dalam dunia untuk menghakimi, supaya barangsiapa yang tidak melihat, dapat melihat, dan supaya barangsiapa yang dapat melihat, menjadi buta." Kata-kata itu didengar oleh beberapa orang Farisi yang berada di situ dan mereka berkata kepada-Nya: "Apakah itu berarti bahwa kami juga buta?" Jawab Yesus kepada mereka: "Sekiranya kamu buta, kamu tidak berdosa, tetapi karena kamu berkata: Kami melihat, maka tetaplah dosamu."

主はサムエルに言われた。「角に油を満たして出かけなさい。あなたをベツレヘムのエッサイのもとに遣わそう。わたしはその息子たちの中に、王となるべき者を見いだした。」彼らがやって来ると、サムエルはエリアブに目を留め、彼こそ主の前に油を注がれる者だ、と思った。 7しかし、主はサムエルに言われた。「容姿や背の高さに目を向けるな。わたしは彼を退ける。人間が見るようには見ない。人は目に映ることを見るが、主は心によって見る。」エッサイは七人の息子にサムエルの前を通らせたが、サムエルは彼に言った。「主はこれらの者をお選びにならない。」サムエルはエッサイに尋ねた。「あなたの息子はこれだけですか。」「末の子が残っていますが、今、羊の番をしています」とエッサイが答えると、サムエルは言った。「人をやって、彼を連れて来させてください。その子がここに来ないうちは、食卓には着きません。」エッサイは人をやって、その子を連れて来させた。彼は血色が良く、目は美しく、姿も立派であった。主は言われた。「立って彼に油を注ぎなさい。これがその人だ。」サムエルは油の入った角を取り出し、兄弟たちの中で彼に油を注いだ。

この読み物はエフェソの信徒への手紙です。
あなたがたは、以前には暗闇でしたが、今は主に結ばれて、光となっています。光の子として歩みなさい。光から、あらゆる善意と正義と真実とが生じるのです。何が主に喜ばれるかを吟味しなさい。実を結ばない暗闇の業に加わらないで、むしろ、それを明るみに出しなさい。彼らがひそかに行っているのは、口にするのも恥ずかしいことなのです。しかし、すべてのものは光にさらされて、明らかにされます。明らかにされるものはみな、光となるのです。それで、こう言われています。

あなたがたの心は以前は暗闇におおわれていましたが、今は主にあって光にあふれています。そのことを態度で示しなさい。内面がこの光で輝いているのですから、良いこと、正しいこと、真実なことだけを行うべきです。日々、主に喜ばれることは何かを、わきまえ知りなさい。邪悪で無益な快楽に身を任せてはいけません。むしろそれを非難し、明るみに出しなさい。神を敬わない者たちが暗闇でふけっている快楽は、口にするのも恥ずかしいことです。しかし、あなたがたがそれを明るみに出す時、光がその罪を照らし出して正体をあばきます。その醜さに気づいて、そのうちの何人かは光の子どもとなるでしょう。だから、聖書にこう言われているのです。

さて、道を歩いていた時のこと、イエスは生まれつきの盲人をごらんになりました。そこで、弟子たちが尋ねました。「先生。どうしてこの人は、生まれつき目が見えないのですか。本人が罪を犯したからですか。それとも両親ですか。」「いや、そのどちらでもありません。ただ神の力が現されるためです。わたしたちは、わたしをお遣わしになった方に命じられた仕事を、急いでやり遂げなければなりません。もうすぐ夜が来ます。そうしたら、もう仕事はできないのですから。しかし、まだこの世にわたしがいる間は、わたしが光となります。」こう言われると、イエスは地面につばをして泥を作り、それを盲人の目に塗って、言われました。「さあ、シロアムの池に行って洗い落としなさい」〔「シロアム」とは、「遣わされた者」の意味〕。イエスが言われたとおりにすると、どうでしょう。彼は見えるようになって戻って来たではありませんか。近所の人や、彼が盲目の物ごいだったことを知っている人は仰天し、「これが、あの人かい」と口をそろえて言いました。ほかの人は、「そうだ」と言う人もいれば、「いや、あいつのはずはない。だが実によく似ている」と言う人もいました。すると当の本人が、「何を言っているんだ。おれだよ」と言いました。人々はあっけにとられながらも、「いったいどうしたのだ。どうやって見えるようになったのか」と矢つぎばやに尋ねました。その男は答えました。「イエスという方が泥をこねて目に塗り、『シロアムの池に行って、泥を洗い落としなさい』と言われたのさ。それでそのとおりにすると、見えるようになったんだよ。」「その人は今どこにいるんだ。」「さあ、知らないな。」人々は、男をパリサイ人たちのところへ連れて行きました。ところで、この日は安息日でした。パリサイ人たちにどうして目が見えるようになったのかを尋ねられて、男はそのいきさつを、くわしく話しました。パリサイ人のある者は、「そのイエスという者は、神から遣わされた者ではない。安息日に仕事なんかしたんだから」と断言しました。しかし、「罪人にすぎない普通の人間に、こんな奇跡が行えるだろうか…」と疑問を投げかける者もいます。意見は真っ二つに分かれました。しかたなく、その盲目だった男に、「おまえの目を開けてくれた人のことをどう思うか」と聞きました。「きっと神様が遣わした預言者です」と男は答えました。しかし、ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、盲目だった男が見えるようになったことを、どうしても信じようとはしません。とうとう両親まで呼び出し、確かめることにしました。「この男は息子だな。ほんとうに生まれつき目が見えなかったのか。だったら、どうして見えるようになったのだ。」両親は答えました。「はい、確かに息子でございます。この子は生まれつき目が見えませんでした。けれども、どうして見えるようになったのか、どなたがこれの目を開けてくださったのかは、少しも存じません。どうぞ本人からじかに聞いてみてください。もう一人前の大人ですから、自分で説明できるでしょう。」こう言ったのは、ユダヤ人の指導者たちがこわかったからです。指導者たちはすでに、イエスをキリストと告白する者は、だれかれの区別なく会堂から追放すると公表していたのです。指導者たちは、男をもう一度呼び寄せ、きつく言い渡しました。「イエスなどではなく、神をあがめなさい。あいつは悪党だ。」「さあ、あの方が善人か悪人かは、私にはわかりません。ただ、これだけははっきりしています。私は今まで目が見えなかったのに、今は見えることです。」「だが、あいつは何をした？ どうやっておまえの目を開けた？」男はまたかと腹を立て、大声で言いました。「そのことは、もう話したではありませんか。お聞きにならなかったのですか。もう一度言えとは、どういうことでしょう。あの方の弟子にでもなりたいのですか。」こう言われて、指導者たちは男をののしりました。「おまえこそあいつの弟子のくせに。われわれはモーセの弟子だ。神はまちがいなくモーセにお語りになった。しかし、あいつはどこの馬の骨だかわからない。」「これは驚きました。あの方は盲人の目を開けることができるんですよ。なのに、あの方のことは何も知らないとおっしゃる。神様は悪人の言うことはお聞きになりません。しかし、神様を礼拝し、お心にかなうことを行う者には、耳を傾けてくださるんじゃありませんか。世の初めからこのかた、生まれつきの盲人の目を開けた人など、いたためしがありません。神様から遣わされた方でなければ、こんなことはできないはずです。」こうまで言われて、彼らは怒りを爆発させました。「このろくでなしめ！われわれを教えようというのか！」とどなりつけたあげく、男を外に追い出してしまいました。そのいきさつを伝え聞いたイエスは、男を捜し、見つけ出されると、「あなたはメシヤを信じますか」とお聞きになりました。「先生。どなたがメシヤ様なのでしょうか。教えてください。ぜひ信じたいのです。」「もうその人に会っているのですよ。あなたと話しているわたしがメシヤなのです。」「主よ。信じます。」男はそう言って、イエスを礼拝しました。するとイエスは言われました。「わたしがこの世に来たのは、心の目の見えない人を見えるようにするため、また、見えると思い込んでいる人に、実は盲目だということをわからせるためなのです。」ちょうどその場に居合わせたパリサイ人たちが、けげんな顔で尋ねました。「じゃあ、私たちも盲目だと言うのか。」「もしあなたがたが盲目だったら、罪に問われないですんだでしょう。しかし、何もかもわかっているとあくまで言いはるので、あなたがたの罪はそのまま残るのです。」
