When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, during the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. They asked, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw the rising of his star in the east and have come to honor him." When Herod heard this, he was greatly disturbed and with him all of Jerusalem. He immediately called a meeting of all high-ranking priests and those who taught the people of God his Law, and asked them where the Messiah was to be born. "In the town of Bethlehem in Judea," they told him, "for this is what the prophet wrote: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the clans of Judah, for from you will become a leader, the one who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod surreptitiously called the wise men and asked them the precise time the star appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem with the instruction, "Go and get precise information about the child. As soon as you have located him, report to me, so that I too may go and honor him." After the meeting with the king, they set out. The star that they had seen in the East went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. The wise men were overjoyed on seeing the star again. They went into the house and when they saw the child with Mary his mother, they knelt and worshiped him. They opened their bags and offered him their gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. In a dream they were warned not to return to Herod, so they returned to their home country by another way.
Sunday readings come in three cycles: A, B, and C. Sundays also have 3 readings, the first reading is from the Old Testament, the second is ordinarily from one of the Epistles or Letters of the New Testament. The third reading is the Gospel. Matthew is read on year A, Mark on year B, and Luke on year C. John's Gospel comes at various times in each liturgical year: on Advent and Lent Sundays and in some readings of year B. Sunday readings are typically posted along with obligatory Mass days.

The Epiphany of the Lord
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, during the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. They asked, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? Responsorial psalm (Psalm 72) (Verses 1–2, 7–8, and 10–13)
ReplyDeleteThe response is: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment.
Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him.
For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.

ReplyDeleteThe response is: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
O God, endow the king with you justice, the royal son with with your righteousness. May he rule your people justly and defend the rights of the lowly.
Justice will flower in his days, and peace abound till the moon be no more. For he reigns from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.
The kings of Tarshish and the islands render him tribute, the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts, all kings bow down to him, and all nations serve him.
He delivers the needy who call on him, the afflicted with no one to help them. His mercy is upon the weak and the poor, he saves the life of the poor.

Pangalawang pagbabasa (Efeso 3: 2–3 at 5–6)
In most Catholic celebrations, priests bless chalk, water, and salt so that the bearer of these holy items can allow God to bless their respective homes. The inscription that is used on top of doors is usually 20 C + M + B + 21, or 20+C+ M+B+21, where the three letters represent not only the magi, but also a Latin phrase: Christus Mansionem Benedicat., meaning "May Christ bless our home."

ReplyDeleteO God, who on this day revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star, grant in your mercy that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Look with favor, Lord, we pray, on these gifts of your Church, in which are offered now not gold or frankincense or myrrh, but he who by them is proclaimed, sacrificed and received, Jesus Christ. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
