First reading (Isaiah 50: 5–9a)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right? Let that man confront me. See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong?
Second reading (James 2: 14–18)
A reading from the letter of Saint James.
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
Gospel (Mark 8: 27–35)

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Christ." Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it."

I have not despaired, for the Lord God comes to my help. So, like a flint I set my face, knowing that I will not be disgraced. He who avenges me is near. Who then will accuse me? Let us confront each other. Who is now my accuser? Let him approach. If the Lord God is my help, who will condemn me?
Second reading (James 2: 14–18)

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, to profess faith without showing works? Such faith has no power to save you. If a brother or sister is in need of clothes or food and one of you states, "May things go well for you; be warm and satisfied," without attending to their material needs, what good is that? So it is for faith without deeds: it is totally dead. Say to whoever challenges you, "You have faith and I have good deeds; show me your faith apart from actions and I, for my part, will show you my faith in the way I act."

Gracious and righteous is the Lord; full of compassion is our God. The Lord protects the simple: have saved me when I was humbled.

He ofrecido mi espalda a los que me golpeaban, mis mejillas a quienes me tiraban la barba, y no oculté mi rostro ante las injurias y los escupos. El Señor Yahvé está de mi parte, y por eso no me molestan las ofensas; por eso, puse mi cara dura como piedra. Y yo sé que no quedaré frustrado, aquí viene mi juez, ¿quieren meterme pleito? Presentémonos juntos, y si hay algún demandante, ¡que se acerque! Si el Señor Yahvé está de mi parte, ¿quién podrá condenarme?
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 116) (Versículos 1–9)

Lo mismo ocurre con la fe: si no produce obras, es que está muerta. Y sería fácil decirle a uno: “Tú tienes fe, pero yo tengo obras. Muéstrame tu fe sin obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe a través de las obras.”

Y comenzó a enseñarles que el Hijo del hombre debía sufrir mucho y ser rechazado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas; que debía ser condenado a muerte y resucitar después de tres días; y les hablaba de esto con toda claridad. Binigyan ako ng Panginoong Yahweh ng pang-unawa, hindi ako naghimagsik o tumalikod sa kanya. Hindi ako gumanti nang bugbugin nila ako, hindi ako kumibo nang insultuhin nila ako. Pinabayaan ko silang bunutin ang aking balbas at luraan ang aking mukha. Hindi ko pinansin ang mga pag-insultong ginawa nila sa akin, sapagkat ang Panginoong Yahweh ang tumutulong sa akin. Handa akong magtiis, sapagkat aking nalalaman na ako'y hindi mapapahiya. Ang Diyos ay malapit, at siya ang magpapatunay na wala akong sala. May mangangahas bang ako'y usigin? Magharap kami sa hukuman, at ilahad ang kanyang paratang. Ang Panginoong Yahweh mismo ang magtatanggol sa akin. Sino ang makapagpapatunay na ako ay may sala?

• Minamahal ko si Yahweh, pagkat ako'y dinirinig, dinirinig niya ako, sa dalangin ko at hibik; ako'y kanyang dinirinig tuwing ako'y tumatawag, kaya nga't habang buhay ko'y sa iyo lagi tatawag.

• Manalig ka, O puso ko, kay Yahweh ka magtiwala, pagkat siya ay mabuti't hindi siya nagpapabaya. Ako'y kanyang iniligtas sa kuko ng kamatayan, tinubos sa pagkatalo, at luha ko'y pinahiran. Sa presensya ni Yahweh doon ako mananahan, doon ako mananahan sa daigdig nitong buhay.

Mga kapatid, ano ang mapapala ng isang tao kung sabihin man niyang siya'y may pananampalataya, ngunit hindi naman niya ito pinapatunayan sa gawa? Kung sasabihin ninyo sa kanya, "Patnubayan ka nawa ng Diyos; magbihis ka't magpakabusog," ngunit hindi naman ninyo siya binibigyan ng kanyang kailangan, may mabuti bang naidudulot sa kanya iyon? Gayundin naman, patay ang pananampalatayang walang kalakip na gawa. Ngunit may nagsasabi, "May pananampalataya ka at may gawa naman ako." Ipakita mo sa akin ang iyong pananampalatayang walang kasamang gawa, at ipapakita ko naman sa iyo ang aking pananampalataya sa pamamagitan ng aking mga gawa.

Tuhan ALLAH telah membuka telingaku, dan aku tidak memberontak, tidak berpaling ke belakang. Aku memberi punggungku kepada orang-orang yang memukul aku, dan pipiku kepada orang-orang yang mencabut janggutku. Aku tidak menyembunyikan mukaku ketika aku dinodai dan diludahi. Tetapi Tuhan ALLAH menolong aku; sebab itu aku tidak mendapat noda. Sebab itu aku meneguhkan hatiku seperti keteguhan gunung batu karena aku tahu, bahwa aku tidak akan mendapat malu. Dia yang menyatakan aku benar telah dekat. Siapakah yang berani berbantah dengan aku? Marilah kita tampil bersama-sama! Siapakah lawanku beperkara? Biarlah ia mendekat kepadaku! Sesungguhnya, Tuhan ALLAH menolong aku; siapakah yang berani menyatakan aku bersalah?
Mazmur (Mazmur 116) (Ayat 1–9)
Tanggapan adalah: Aku boleh berjalan di hadapan Tuhan di negeri orang-orang hidup.
• Aku mengasihi TUHAN, sebab Ia mendengarkan suaraku dan permohonanku. Sebab Ia menyendengkan telinga-Nya kepadaku, maka seumur hidupku aku akan berseru kepada-Nya.
• Tali-tali maut telah meliliti aku, dan kegentaran terhadap dunia orang mati menimpa aku, aku mengalami kesesakan dan kedukaan. Tetapi aku menyerukan nama TUHAN: "Ya TUHAN, luputkanlah kiranya aku!"
• TUHAN adalah pengasih dan adil, Allah kita penyayang. TUHAN memelihara orang-orang sederhana; aku sudah lemah, tetapi diselamatkan-Nya aku.
• Kembalilah tenang, hai jiwaku, sebab TUHAN telah berbuat baik kepadamu. Ya, Engkau telah meluputkan aku dari pada maut, dan mataku dari pada air mata, dan kakiku dari pada tersandung. Aku boleh berjalan di hadapan TUHAN, di negeri orang-orang hidup.

Apakah gunanya, saudara-saudaraku, jika seorang mengatakan, bahwa ia mempunyai iman, padahal ia tidak mempunyai perbuatan? Dapatkah iman itu menyelamatkan dia? Jika seorang saudara atau saudari tidak mempunyai pakaian dan kekurangan makanan sehari-hari, dan seorang dari antara kamu berkata: "Selamat jalan, kenakanlah kain panas dan makanlah sampai kenyang!", tetapi ia tidak memberikan kepadanya apa yang perlu bagi tubuhnya, apakah gunanya itu? Demikian juga halnya dengan iman: Jika iman itu tidak disertai perbuatan, maka iman itu pada hakekatnya adalah mati. Tetapi mungkin ada orang berkata: "Padamu ada iman dan padaku ada perbuatan", aku akan menjawab dia: "Tunjukkanlah kepadaku imanmu itu tanpa perbuatan, dan aku akan menunjukkan kepadamu imanku dari perbuatan-perbuatanku."

Jawab mereka: "Ada yang mengatakan: Yohanes Pembaptis, ada juga yang mengatakan: Elia, ada pula yang mengatakan: seorang dari para nabi." Ia bertanya kepada mereka: "Tetapi apa katamu, siapakah Aku ini?" Maka jawab Petrus: "Engkau adalah Mesias!" Lalu Yesus melarang mereka dengan keras supaya jangan memberitahukan kepada siapa pun tentang Dia. Kemudian mulailah Yesus mengajarkan kepada mereka, bahwa Anak Manusia harus menanggung banyak penderitaan dan ditolak oleh tua-tua, imam-imam kepala dan ahli-ahli Taurat, lalu dibunuh dan bangkit sesudah tiga hari. Hal ini dikatakan-Nya dengan terus terang. Tetapi Petrus menarik Yesus ke samping dan menegor Dia. Maka berpalinglah Yesus dan sambil memandang murid-murid-Nya Ia memarahi Petrus, kata-Nya: "Enyahlah Iblis, sebab engkau bukan memikirkan apa yang dipikirkan Allah, melainkan apa yang dipikirkan manusia." 愛する皆さん。自分には信仰があると言っても、それを行動で表さなかったら、どうしてその信仰を実証できるでしょう。そのような信仰が、人を救うことができるでしょうか。あなたがたの仲間に、着る物もなく、その日の食べ物にも事欠いている人がいて、その人に、「それはお困りですね。でも神様が祝福してくださいますよ。暖かくして、お腹いっぱい食べてください」と言うだけで、必要なものを何もあげないなら、何の役に立つでしょう。このように、信仰に行いが伴わなければ、その信仰は死んだも同然です。さらに、こう言う人もいるかもしれません。「行いのないあなたの信仰の正しさを見せてください。私は、私の行いによって、自分の信仰を見せましょう。」
福音書（マルコ第8章：第27詩–第35詩）
この読み物はマルコの福音書です。
イエスの一行はガリラヤを去り、ピリポ・カイザリヤの村々へ行きました。その道々、イエスは弟子たちに、「人々は、私のことをだれだと言っていますか」とお尋ねになりました。「バプテスマのヨハネだと言う者もいれば、エリヤだと言う者もいます。また昔の預言者が生き返ったと言う者もいます」と、弟子たちは答えました。するとイエスは、「では、あなたがたは、私をだれだと思っているのですか」とお尋ねになりました。即座にペテロが、「あなたこそキリスト（ギリシャ語で救い主）です」と答えました。ところがイエスは、このことをだれにも話してはいけないと、きびしく言われました。それから、やがてご自分が経験する恐ろしい出来事――長老、祭司長、ユダヤ人の指導者たちに捨てられ、殺され、三日目に復活すること――を弟子たちに話し始められました。それも、実にはっきりとお話しになったので、ペテロはイエスをわきに呼び、「そんなことをおっしゃるものではありません」といさめました。イエスはふり返って弟子たちを見ながら、非常にきびしい口調でペテロに言われました。「下がれ、サタン！あなたはただ人間的な見方をして、神のことを考えてみようともしていません。」それから、弟子たちと群衆とを呼び寄せ、こう言われました。「だれでも私について来たければ、自分中心の生活をやめ、自分の十字架を負って、私について来なさい。自分の命を守ることばかりにとらわれている者は、それを失います。私と福音とのために命を捨てる者が、命を得るのです。」
第一読み物（イザヤ書第50章：第5詩–第9A詩）

主なる神は私の耳を開かれた。私は逆らわず、退かなかった。打とうとする者には背中をまかせひげを抜こうとする者には頬をまかせた。顔を隠さずに、嘲りと唾を受けた。主なる神が助けてくださるから私はそれを嘲りとは思わない。私は顔を硬い石のようにする。私は知っている私が辱められることはない、と。私の正しさを認める方は近くいます。誰が私と共に争ってくれるのかわれわれは共に立とう。誰が私を訴えるのか私に向かって来るがよい。見よ、主なる神が助けてくださる。誰が私を罪に定めえよう。
第二読み物（ヤコブ第2章：第14詩–第18詩）
この読み物はヤコブの手紙です。
私の兄弟たち、自分は信仰を持っていると言う者がいても、行いが伴わなければ、何の役に立つでしょうか。そのような信仰が、彼を救うことができるでしょうか。もし、兄弟あるいは姉妹が、着る物もなく、その日の食べ物にも事欠いているとき、あなたがたのだれかが、彼らに、「安心して行きなさい。温まりなさい。満腹するまで食べなさい」と言うだけで、体に必要なものを何一つ与えないなら、何の役に立つでしょう。信仰もこれと同じです。行いが伴わないなら、信仰はそれだけでは死んだものです。しかし、「あなたには信仰があり、私には行いがある」と言う人がいるかもしれません。行いの伴わないあなたの信仰を見せなさい。そうすれば、私は行いによって、自分の信仰を見せましょう。

イエスは、弟子たちとフィリポ・カイサリア地方の方々の村にお出かけになった。その途中、弟子たちに、「人々は、私のことを何者だと言っているか」と言われた。弟子たちは言った。「『洗礼者ヨハネだ』と言っています。ほかに、『エリヤだ』と言う人も、『預言者の一人だ』と言う人もいます。」そこでイエスがお尋ねになった。「それでは、あなたがたは私を何者だと言うのか。」ペトロが答えた。「あなたは、メシアです。」するとイエスは、御自分のことをだれにも話さないようにと弟子たちを戒められた。それからイエスは、人の子は必ず多くの苦しみを受け、長老、祭司長、律法学者たちから排斥されて殺され、三日の後に復活することになっている、と弟子たちに教え始められた。しかも、そのことをはっきりとお話しになった。すると、ペトロはイエスをわきへお連れして、いさめ始めた。イエスは振り返って、弟子たちを見ながら、ペトロを叱って言われた。「サタン、引き下がれ。あなたは神のことを思わず、人間のことを思っている。」それから、群衆を弟子たちと共に呼び寄せて言われた。「私の後に従いたい者は、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を背負って、私に従いなさい。自分の命を救いたいと思う者は、それを失うが、私のため、また福音のために命を失う者は、それを救うのである。」
