Year C readings
First reading (Joshua 5: 9–12)
A reading from the book of Joshua.
The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth of the month. On the day after the Passover, they ate of the produce of the land in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. On that same day after the Passover, on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.

Second reading (2 Corinthians 5: 17–21)
A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

Gospel (Luke 15: 1–3 and 11–32)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them Jesus addressed this parable: “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’”

First reading (1 Samuel 16: 1b, 6–7 and 10–13a)
A reading from the first book of Samuel.
The LORD said to Samuel: “Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons.” As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is here before him.” But the LORD said to Samuel: “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart.” In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any one of these.” Then Samuel asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.” Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance. The LORD said, “There—anoint him, for this is the one!” Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.

Second reading (Ephesians 5: 8–14)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Gospel (John 9: 1–41)

As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” —which means Sent. So he went and washed, and came back able to see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?” Some said, "It is," but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” He said, “I am.” So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” He replied, “The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see.” And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.” They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a Sabbath. So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.” So some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man do such signs?” And there was a division among them. So they said to the blind man again, “What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight. They asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How does he now see?” His parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; question him.” So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give God the praise! We know that this man is a sinner.” He replied, “If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.” So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” They ridiculed him and said, “You are that man’s disciple; we are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from.” The man answered and said to them, “This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.” They answered and said to him, “You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?” Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, ADo you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered and said, “Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “I do believe, Lord,” and he worshiped him. Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.

Because in Christ God reconciled the world with himself, no longer taking into account their trespasses and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. He had no sin, but God made him bear our sin, so that in him we might share the holiness of God.

Thus, the father divided his property between them. Some days later, the younger son gathered all his belongings and started off for a distant land where he squandered his wealth in loose living. Having spent everything, he was hard pressed when a severe famine broke out in that land. So he hired himself out to a well-to-do citizen of that place and was sent to work on a pig farm. So famished was he that he longed to fill his stomach even with the food given to the pigs, but nobody offered him anything. Finally coming to his senses, he stated: 'How many of my father's hired workers have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and state to him: Father, I have sinned against God and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me then as one of your hired servants.' With that thought in mind, he set off for his father's house. He was still a long way off when his father caught sight of him. His father was so deeply moved with compassion that he ran out to meet his son, threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. The son stated: 'Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you. I no longer deserve to be called your son…' But the father turned to his servants: 'Quick! Bring out the finest robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and kill it. We shall celebrate and have a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found.' And the celebration commenced. Meanwhile, the elder son had been working in the fields. As he returned and was near the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what it was all about. The servant answered: 'Your brother has come home safe and sound, and your father is so happy about it that he was ordered this celebration and killed the fattened calf.' The elder son became angry and refused to go inside. His father came out and pleaded with him. The indignant son stated: 'Look, I have slaved for you all these years. Never have I disobeyed your orders. Yet you have never given me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends. Then when this son of yours returns after squandering your property with loose women, you kill the fattened calf for him.' The father stated: "My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But this brother of yours was dead, and has come back to life. He was lost and is found. And for that we had to rejoice and be glad.'"

After all this, the Jews refused to believe that the man had been blind and had recovered his sight; so they called his parents and asked them, "Is this your son? You say that he was born blind, how is it that he now sees?" The parents answered, "He really is our son and he was born blind; but how it is that he now sees, we do not know, neither do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is old enough. Let him speak for himself." The parents stated this because they feared the Jews who had already agreed that whoever confessed Jesus to be the Christ was to be expelled. Because of this, his parents stated, "He is old enough, ask him." So a second time the Pharisees called the man who had been blind, and they stated to him, "Tell us the truth; we know that this man is a sinner." He replied, "I do not know whether he is a sinner or not; I only know that I was blind and now I see." They stated to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He replied, "I have told you already and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?" Then they started to insult him. "Become his disciple yourself! We are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man we do not know where he comes from." The man replied, "It is amazing that you do not know where the man comes from, and yet he opened my eyes! We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone honors God and does his will, God listens to him. Never, since the world began, has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person who was born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." They answered him, "You were born a sinner and now you teach us!" And they expelled him. Jesus heard that they had expelled him. He found him and stated, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered, "Who is he, that I may believe in him?" Jesus stated, "You have seen him and he is speaking to you." He stated, "Lord, I believe;" and he worshiped him. Jesus stated, "I came into this world to carry out a judgment: Those who do not see shall see, and those who see shall become blind." Some Pharisees stood by and asked him, "So we are blind?" And Jesus answered, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty. Now you say: 'We see'; this is the proof of your sin."

  7. Primera lectura (Josué 5: 9–12)
    Una lectura del libro de Josué.
    Yahvé dijo entonces a Josué: “Hoy he lanzado lejos de ustedes la vergüenza de Egipto”. Por eso dieron a ese lugar el nombre que tiene todavía: Guilgal. Los israelitas acamparon en Guilgal y la tarde del decimocuarto día del mes, celebraron la Pascua en las llanuras de Jericó. Al día siguiente de la Pascua, comieron de los frutos del país, panes sin levadura y grano tostado. El maná dejó de caer el día antes, en vista de que ya se alimentaban de los frutos del país. Los israelitas no tuvieron más maná; a partir de ese año se alimentaron de los frutos del país de Canaán.

    Salmo responsivo (Salmo 34) (Versículos 2–7)
    La respuesta es: Gusten y vean que bueno es el Señor.

    Segunda lectura (2 Corintios 5: 17–21)
    Una lectura de la segunda carta de San Pablo a los corintios.
    El que vive en Cristo es una nueva criatura: lo antiguo ha desaparecido, un ser nuevo se ha hecho presente. Y todo esto procede de Dios, que nos reconcilió con él por intermedio de Cristo y nos confió el ministerio de la reconciliación. Porque es Dios el que estaba en Cristo, reconciliando al mundo consigo, no teniendo en cuenta los pecados de los hombres, y confiándonos la palabra de la reconciliación. Nosotros somos, entonces, embajadores de Cristo, y es Dios el que exhorta a los hombres por intermedio nuestro. Por eso, les suplicamos en nombre de Cristo: Déjense reconciliar con Dios. A aquel que no conoció el pecado, Dios lo identificó con el pecado en favor nuestro, a fin de que nosotros seamos justificados por él.

      Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según el San Lucas.
      Todos los publicanos y pecadores se acercaban a Jesús para escucharlo. Los fariseos y los escribas murmuraban, diciendo: “Este hombre recibe a los pecadores y come con ellos.” Jesús les dijo entonces esta parábola: “Un hombre tenía dos hijos. El menor de ellos dijo a su padre: "Padre, dame la parte de herencia que me corresponde". Y el padre les repartió sus bienes. Pocos días después, el hijo menor recogió todo lo que tenía y se fue a un país lejano, donde malgastó sus bienes en una vida licenciosa. Después de haberlo gastado todo, sobrevino una fuerte hambre en aquella tierra y comenzó a sentir necesidad. Entonces se puso al servicio de uno de los habitantes de esa región, que lo envió a su campo para cuidar cerdos. Él hubiera deseado calmar su hambre con las bellotas que comían los cerdos, pero nadie se las daba. Entonces recapacitó y dijo: "¡Cuántos jornaleros de mi padre tienen pan en abundancia, y yo estoy aquí muriéndome de hambre!". Ahora mismo iré a la casa de mi padre y le diré: "Padre, pequé contra el Cielo y contra ti; ya no merezco ser llamado hijo tuyo, trátame como a uno de tus jornaleros". Entonces partió y volvió a la casa de su padre. Cuando todavía estaba lejos, su padre lo vio y se conmovió profundamente, corrió a su encuentro, lo abrazó y lo besó. El joven le dijo: "Padre, pequé contra el Cielo y contra ti; no merezco ser llamado hijo tuyo". Pero el padre dijo a sus servidores: "Traigan enseguida la mejor ropa y vístanlo, pónganle un anillo en el dedo y sandalias en los pies. Traigan el ternero engordado y mátenlo. Comamos y festejemos, porque mi hijo estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y fue encontrado". Y comenzó la fiesta. El hijo mayor estaba en el campo. Al volver, ya cerca de la casa, oyó la música y los coros que acompañaban la danza. Y llamando a uno de los sirvientes, le preguntó que significaba eso. Él le respondió: "Tu hermano ha regresado, y tu padre hizo matar el ternero y engordado, porque lo ha recobrado sano y salvo". Él se enojó y no quiso entrar. Su padre salió para rogarle que entrara, pero él le respondió: "Hace tantos años que te sirvo sin haber desobedecido jamás ni una sola de tus órdenes, y nunca me diste un cabrito para hacer una fiesta con mis amigos. ¡Y ahora que ese hijo tuyo ha vuelto, después de haber gastado tus bienes con mujeres, haces matar para él el ternero engordado!" Pero el padre le dijo: "Hijo mío, tú estás siempre conmigo, y todo lo mío es tuyo. Es justo que haya fiesta y alegría, porque tu hermano estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y ha sido encontrado."”

  8. Primera lectura (1 Samuel 16: 1B, 6–7 y 10–13ª)
    Una lectura del primer libro de Samuel.
    Yahvé dijo a Samuel: “Llena pues tu cuerno de aceite y anda. Te envío donde Jesé de Belén, porque me escogí un rey entre sus hijos.” Cuando entraron, Samuel divisó a Eliab y pensó: “Seguramente ése será el que Yahvé va a consagrar.” Pero Yahvé dijo a Samuel: “Olvídate de su apariencia y de su gran altura, lo he descartado. Porque Dios no ve las cosas como los hombres: el hombre se fija en las apariencias pero Dios ve el corazón.” Finalmente Jesé hizo pasar a sus siete hijos ante Samuel, y Samuel decía a Jesé: “Yahvé no ha elegido a ninguno de estos.” Entonces Samuel dijo a Jesé: “¿Esos son todos tus hijos?” Respondió: “Todavía falta el menor, que cuida el rebaño.” Samuel le dijo: “Mándalo a buscar porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que no esté aquí.” Fueron pues a buscarlo y llegó; era rubio con hermosos ojos y una bella apariencia. Yahvé dijo entonces: “Párate y conságralo; es él.” Samuel tomó su cuerno con aceite y lo consagró en medio de sus hermanos.

    Salmo responsorial (Salmo 23) (Versículos 1–6)
    La respuesta es: El Señor es mi pastor, nada me puede faltar.
    • El Señor es mi pastor, nada me puede faltar. Él me hace descansar en verdes praderas, me conduce a las aguas tranquilas y repara mis fuerzas.
    • Me guía por el recto sendero, por amor de su Nombre. Aunque cruce por oscuras quebradas, no temeré ningún mal, porque tú estás conmigo: tu vara y tu bastón me infunden confianza.
    • Tú preparas ante mí una mesa, frente a mis enemigos; unges con óleo mi cabeza y mi copa rebosa.
    • Tu bondad y tu gracia me acompañan a lo largo de mi vida; y habitaré en la Casa del Señor, por muy largo tiempo.

    Segunda lectura (Efesios 5: 8–14)
    Una lectura de la carta de San Pablo a los efesios.
    Antes, ustedes eran tinieblas, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de la luz. Ahora bien, el fruto de la luz es la bondad, la justicia y la verdad. Sepan discernir lo que agrada al Señor, y no participen de las obras estériles de las tinieblas; al contrario, pónganlas en evidencia. Es verdad que resulta vergonzoso aun mencionar las cosas que esa gente hace ocultamente. Pero cuando se las pone de manifiesto, aparecen iluminadas por la luz, porque todo lo que se pone de manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despiértate, tú que duermes, levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo te iluminará.

    1. Evangelio (Juan 9: 1–41)
      Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según el San Juan.
      Al pasar, vio a un hombre ciego de nacimiento. Sus discípulos le preguntaron: “Maestro, ¿quién ha pecado, él o sus padres, para que haya nacido ciego?” “Ni él ni sus padres han pecado, respondió Jesús; nació así para que se manifiesten en él las obras de Dios. Debemos trabajar en las obras de aquel que me envió, mientras es de día; llega la noche, cuando nadie puede trabajar. Mientras estoy en el mundo, soy la luz del mundo.” Después que dijo esto, escupió en la tierra, hizo barro con la saliva y lo puso sobre los ojos del ciego, diciéndole: “Ve a lavarte a la piscina de Siloé”, que significa "Enviado". El ciego fue, se lavó y, al regresar, ya veía. Los vecinos y los que antes lo habían visto mendigar, se preguntaban: “¿No es este el que se sentaba a pedir limosna?” Unos opinaban: “Es el mismo.” “No, respondían otros, es uno que se le parece.” Él decía: “Soy realmente yo.” Ellos le dijeron: “¿Cómo se te han abierto los ojos?” El respondió: “Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo barro, lo puso sobre mis ojos y me dijo: “Ve a lavarte a Siloé.” Yo fui, me lavé y vi.” Ellos le preguntaron: “¿Dónde está?” El respondió: “No lo sé.” El que había sido ciego fue llevado ante los fariseos. Sin embargo, los judíos no querían creer que ese hombre había sido ciego y que había llegado a ver, hasta que llamaron a sus padres y les preguntaron: “¿Es este el hijo de ustedes, el que dicen que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora ve?” Sus padres respondieron: “Sabemos que es nuestro hijo y que nació ciego, pero cómo es que ahora ve y quién le abrió los ojos, no lo sabemos. Pregúntenle a él: tiene edad para responder por su cuenta.” Sus padres dijeron esto por temor a los judíos, que ya se habían puesto de acuerdo para excluir de la sinagoga al que reconociera a Jesús como Mesías. Por esta razón dijeron: “Tiene bastante edad, pregúntenle a él.” Los judíos llamaron por segunda vez al que había sido ciego y le dijeron: “Glorifica a Dios. Nosotros sabemos que ese hombre es un pecador.” “Yo no sé si es un pecador, respondió; lo que sé es que antes yo era ciego y ahora veo.” Ellos le preguntaron: “¿Qué te ha hecho? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?” Él les respondió: “Ya se lo dije y ustedes no me han escuchado. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo de nuevo? ¿También ustedes quieren hacerse discípulos suyos?” Ellos lo injuriaron y le dijeron: “¡Tú serás discípulo de ese hombre; nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés! Sabemos que Dios habló a Moisés, pero no sabemos de dónde es este.” El hombre les respondió: “Esto es lo asombroso: que ustedes no sepan de dónde es, a pesar de que me ha abierto los ojos. Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero si al que lo honra y cumple su voluntad. Nunca se oyó decir que alguien haya abierto los ojos a un ciego de nacimiento. Si este hombre no viniera de Dios, no podría hacer nada.” Ellos le respondieron: “Tú naciste lleno de pecado, y ¿quieres darnos lecciones?” Y lo echaron. Jesús se enteró de que lo habían echado y, al encontrarlo, le preguntó: “¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?” Él respondió: “¿Quién es, Señor, para que crea en él?” Jesús le dijo: “Tú lo has visto: es el que te está hablando.” Entonces él exclamó: “Creo, Señor”, y se postró ante él. Después Jesús agregó: “He venido a este mundo para un juicio: Para que vean los que no ven y queden ciegos los que ven.” Los fariseos que estaban con él oyeron esto y le dijeron: “¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?” Jesús les respondió: “Si ustedes fueran ciegos, no tendrían pecado, pero como dicen: ‘Vemos’, su pecado permanece.”

  9. Unang pagbabasa (Josue 5: 9–12)
    Ang pagbabasa sa aklat ni Josue.
    At sinabi ni Yahweh kay Josue, “Inalis ko ngayon ang kahihiyan ng pagkaalipin ninyo sa Egipto.” Kaya't ang lugar na iyon ay tinawag na Gilgal magpahanggang ngayon. Samantalang ang mga Israelita ay nasa Gilgal sa kapatagan ng Jerico, ipinagdiwang nila ang Paskwa noong kinagabihan ng ikalabing apat na araw ng unang buwan. Kinaumagahan, araw pa rin ng Paskwa, kumain sila ng mga pagkaing inani nila sa lupaing iyon: sinangag na trigo at tinapay na walang pampaalsa. Hindi na muling umulan pa ng manna nang makakain na sila ng mga inani nila sa lupain ng Canaan. Kaya't mula nang taóng iyon, pagkaing inaani na sa Canaan ang kanilang kinakain.

    Pangalawang pagbabasa (2 Corinto 5: 17–21)
    Ang pagbabasa sa pangalawang sulat ni San Pablo sa mga taga-Corinto.
    Kaya't kung nakipag-isa na kay Cristo ang isang tao, isa na siyang bagong nilalang. Wala na ang dati niyang pagkatao, sa halip, ito'y napalitan na ng bago. Ang Diyos ang gumawa ng lahat ng ito. Sa pamamagitan ni Cristo, ibinilang niya kaming mga kaibigan at hindi na kaaway, at pinagkatiwalaan niya kami upang maglingkod nang sa gayon ang mga tao ay maging kaibigan rin niya. Ang ibig sabihin, sa pamamagitan ni Cristo, ang mga tao'y ibinilang ng Diyos na kaibigan, at hindi na niya tinatandaan ang kanilang mga kasalanan. At kami naman ay inatasan niyang ipamalita ito. Kaya nga, kami'y mga sugo ni Cristo; ang Diyos mismo ang nakikiusap sa inyo sa pamamagitan namin. Kami'y nakikiusap sa inyo alang-alang kay Cristo: makipagkasundo kayo sa Diyos. Hindi nagkasala si Cristo, ngunit alang-alang sa atin, siya'y itinuring na makasalanan upang sa pakikipag-isa natin sa kanya ay maging matuwid tayo sa harap ng Diyos.

      Isang araw, ang mga maniningil ng buwis at ang mga makasalanan ay lumapit kay Jesus upang makinig. Nagbulung-bulungan ang mga Pariseo at mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. Sabi nila, “Ang taong ito'y nakikisama at nakikisalo sa mga makasalanan.” Dahil dito, sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus ang talinghagang ito. Sinabi pa ni Jesus, “May isang tao na may dalawang anak na lalaki. Sinabi sa kanya ng bunso, ‘Ama, ibigay na po ninyo sa akin ang mamanahin ko.’ At hinati nga ng ama ang kanyang ari-arian. Pagkalipas ng ilang araw, ipinagbili ng bunso ang kanyang bahagi at nagpunta sa malayong lupain. Nilustay niya roon sa mga bisyo ang lahat niyang kayamanan. Nang maubos na ito, nagkaroon ng matinding taggutom sa lupaing iyon, kaya't siya'y nagsimulang maghirap. Namasukan siya sa isang tagaroon, at siya'y pinagtrabaho nito sa isang babuyan. Sa tindi ng kanyang gutom, at dahil sa wala namang nagbibigay sa kanya ng pagkain, halos kainin na niya ang mga pinagbalatan ng mga bungangkahoy na pinapakain sa mga baboy. Ngunit napag-isip-isip niya ang kanyang ginawa at nasabi niya sa sarili, ‘Labis-labis ang pagkain ng mga alila ng aking ama, samantalang ako'y namamatay dito sa gutom! Babalik ako sa aking ama at sasabihin ko sa kanya, “Ama, nagkasala po ako sa Diyos at sa inyo. Hindi na po ako karapat-dapat na tawaging anak ninyo; ibilang na lamang ninyo akong isa sa inyong mga alila.”’ At siya'y nagpasyang umuwi sa kanila. “Malayo pa'y natanaw na siya ng kanyang ama, at dahil sa matinding awa ay patakbo siyang sinalubong, niyakap, at hinalikan. Sinabi ng anak, ‘Ama, nagkasala po ako sa Diyos at sa inyo. Hindi na po ako karapat-dapat na tawaging anak ninyo.’ Ngunit tinawag ng ama ang kanyang mga alila, ‘Dali! Kunin ninyo ang pinakamagandang damit at bihisan ninyo siya! Suotan ninyo siya ng singsing at ng sandalyas. Katayin ninyo ang pinatabang guya at tayo'y kumain at magdiwang. Sapagkat ang anak kong ito ay namatay na, ngunit siya ay nabuhay; nawala, ngunit muling natagpuan.’ At sila nga'y nagdiwang. “Nasa bukid noon ang anak na panganay. Nang umuwi siya at malapit na sa bahay, narinig niya ang tugtugan at sayawan. Tinawag niya ang isang utusan at tinanong, ‘Bakit? Ano'ng mayroon sa atin?’ ‘Dumating po ang inyong kapatid!’ sagot ng alila. ‘Ipinapatay po ng inyong ama ang pinatabang guya dahil ang inyong kapatid ay nakabalik nang buhay at walang sakit.’ Nagalit ang panganay at ayaw niyang pumasok sa bahay. Pinuntahan siya ng kanyang ama at pinakiusapan. Ngunit sumagot siya, ‘Pinaglingkuran ko kayo sa loob ng maraming taon at kailanma'y hindi ko kayo sinuway. Ngunit ni minsa'y hindi ninyo ako binigyan ng kahit isang maliit na kambing para magkasayahan kami ng aking mga kaibigan. Subalit nang dumating ang anak ninyong ito, na lumustay ng inyong kayamanan sa masasamang babae, ipinagpatay pa ninyo siya ng pinatabang guya!’ Sumagot ang ama, ‘Anak, lagi kitang kapiling at ang lahat ng aking ari-arian ay sa iyo. Nararapat lang na tayo'y magsaya at magdiwang, sapagkat namatay na ang kapatid mo, ngunit nabuhay; nawala, ngunit muling natagpuan.’”

Si Yahweh'y hindi tumitingin nang katulad ng pagtingin ng tao. Panlabas na anyo ang tinitingnan ng tao ngunit sa puso tumitingin si Yahweh.” Isa-isang tinawag ni Jesse ang pito niyang anak ngunit wala sa kanila ang pinili ni Yahweh. Kaya't tinanong ni Samuel si Jesse, “Mayroon ka pa bang anak na wala rito?” “Mayroon pang isa; ang bunso na nagpapastol ng mga tupa,” sagot ni Jesse. Sinabi ni Samuel, “Ipasundo mo siya. Hindi natin sisimulan ang paghahandog hangga't hindi siya dumarating.”
    At sinundo nga ang anak na ito ni Jesse. Siya'y makisig na binatilyo, malusog at maganda ang mga mata. At sinabi ni Yahweh kay Samuel, “Siya ang pinili ko; buhusan mo siya ng langis.” Kinuha ni Samuel ang sungay na sisidlan ng langis, at binuhusan niya si David ng langis sa harapan ng kanyang mga kapatid. At nilukuban si David ng Espiritu ni Yahweh.

    Pangalawang pagbabasa (Efeso 5: 8–14)
    Ang pagbabasa sa pangalawang sulat ni San Pablo sa mga taga-Efeso.
    Dati, kayo'y nasa kadiliman, ngunit ngayo'y nasa kaliwanagan na, sapagkat kayo'y nasa Panginoon. Mamuhay kayo ngayon nang nararapat sa mga taong nasa liwanag. Sapagkat pawang mabuti, matuwid at totoo ang ginagawa ng namumuhay sa liwanag. Sikapin ninyong matutunan kung ano ang kalugud-lugod sa Panginoon. Huwag kayong makibahagi sa mga gawain ng kadiliman na walang ibinubungang mabuti. Sa halip ay ibunyag ninyo ang mga iyon. Kahiya-hiyang mabanggit man lamang ang mga bagay na iyon na ginagawa nila nang lihim. Ang lahat ng nalalantad sa liwanag ay nakikilala kung ano talaga ang mga iyon, at nalalantad ang lahat dahil sa liwanag. Kaya't sinasabi, “Gumising ka, ikaw na natutulog, bumangon ka mula sa libingan, at liliwanagan ka ni Cristo.”

Sumagot siya, “Ang lalaking tinatawag na Jesus ay gumawa ng putik at ipinahid iyon sa aking mata. Pagkatapos, sinabi niya sa akin, ‘Pumunta ka sa Siloe at maghilamos.’ Pumunta nga ako doon at naghilamos, at nakakita na ako!” “Nasaan siya?” tanong nila sa kanya. “Hindi ko alam,” sagot niya. Dinala ng mga tao sa mga Pariseo ang dating bulag. Araw ng Pamamahinga nang gumawa si Jesus ng putik at nang pinagaling niya ang bulag. Tinanong din siya ng mga Pariseo kung paano siya nakakita. Kaya't sinabi niya sa kanila, “Pinahiran niya ng putik ang aking mga mata, ako'y naghilamos at ngayo'y nakakakita na ako.” Ang sabi ng ilang Pariseo, “Hindi maaaring mula sa Diyos ang taong iyon, sapagkat hindi niya ipinapangilin ang Araw ng Pamamahinga.” Ngunit sinabi naman ng iba, “Paanong makakagawa ng ganitong mga himala ang isang makasalanan?” At hindi sila magkaisa. Kaya't tinanong nilang muli ang dating bulag, “At ikaw, ano naman ang masasabi mo tungkol sa kanya, dahil pinagaling niya ang iyong mga mata?” “Isa siyang propeta!” sagot niya.

    2. Ayaw maniwala ng mga Judio na siya'y talagang dating bulag na ngayo'y nakakakita na kaya't ipinatawag nila ang kanyang mga magulang. “Anak nga ba ninyo ito? Talaga bang siya'y ipinanganak na bulag? Ano'ng nangyari at nakakakita na siya ngayon?” tanong nila. Sumagot ang kanyang mga magulang, “Alam naming anak namin siya at alam din naming siya'y ipinanganak na bulag. Ngunit hindi po namin alam kung ano ang nangyari at nakakakita na siya ngayon, o kung sino ang nagpagaling sa kanya. Siya na po ang tanungin ninyo. Nasa hustong gulang na siya. Makakapagsalita na siya para sa kanyang sarili.” Ganito ang sinabi ng kanyang mga magulang dahil sa kanilang takot sa mga pinuno ng mga Judio. Sapagkat pinagkaisahan na ng mga Judio na ang sinumang magpahayag na si Jesus ang Cristo ay ititiwalag sa sinagoga. Ito ang dahilan kung bakit sinabi ng kanyang mga magulang, “Siya'y nasa hustong gulang na, siya ang tanungin ninyo.” Muli nilang ipinatawag ang dating bulag at sinabi sa kanya, “Sa ngalan ng Diyos, magsabi ka ng totoo. Alam naming ang taong iyon ay makasalanan.” Sumagot siya, “Hindi ko po alam kung siya'y makasalanan, o hindi. Isang bagay po ang alam ko; ako'y dating bulag, subalit ngayo'y nakakakita na.” “Ano ang ginawa niya sa iyo? Paano niya pinagaling ang iyong mga mata?” tanong nila. Sumagot siya, “Sinabi ko na po sa inyo, at ayaw naman ninyo akong paniwalaan. Bakit gusto ninyong marinig muli? Nais ba ninyong maging alagad din niya?” At siya'y kanilang nilait, “Ikaw ang alagad niya! Kami'y mga alagad ni Moises. Nalalaman naming nagsalita ang Diyos kay Moises ngunit ang taong iyon, ni hindi namin alam kung saan siya nanggaling!” Sumagot ang lalaki, “Iyan nga po ang nakapagtataka! Hindi ninyo alam kung saan siya nanggaling, gayunma'y pinagaling niya ang aking mga mata. Alam nating hindi pinapakinggan ng Diyos ang mga makasalanan, ngunit pinapakinggan niya ang mga sumasamba sa kanya at sumusunod sa kanyang kalooban. Mula pa nang likhain ang mundo ay wala pa tayong nabalitaang nakapagpagaling ng mata ng taong ipinanganak na bulag. Wala pong magagawa ang taong iyon kung siya'y hindi mula sa Diyos!” Sumagot sila, “Ipinanganak kang lubos na makasalanan at ngayo'y nais mo pa kaming turuan!” At siya'y kanilang itiniwalag. Nabalitaan ni Jesus na ang lalaking pinagaling niya ay itiniwalag ng mga Pariseo. Kaya't nang matagpuan niya ito ay kanyang tinanong, “Sumasampalataya ka ba sa Anak ng Tao?” Sumagot ang lalaki, “Sino po ba siya, Ginoo? Sabihin ninyo sa akin upang ako'y sumampalataya sa kanya.” “Siya'y nakita mo na. Siya ang kausap mo ngayon,” wika ni Jesus. “Sumasampalataya po ako, Panginoon!” sabi ng lalaki. At sinamba niya si Jesus. Sinabi ni Jesus, “Naparito ako sa mundong ito upang humatol, at nang sa gayo'y makakita ang mga bulag at mabulag naman ang mga nakakakita.” Narinig ito ng ilang Pariseong naroon at siya'y kanilang tinanong, “Ibig mo bang sabihi'y mga bulag din kami?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Kung kayo nga'y bulag, hindi sana kayo hahatulang maysala. Ngunit dahil sinasabi ninyong nakakakita kayo, nananatili kayong maysala.”
