Easter Sunday of the Lord's Resurrection

First reading (Acts 10: 34a and 37–43)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Peter proceeded to speak and said: "You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name."

Second reading (Colossians 3: 1–4) (Option 1)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians.
Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

Second reading (1 Corinthians 5: 6b–8) (Option 2)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Gospel (John 20: 1–9) (Option 1)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him." So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Gospel (Luke 24: 13–35) (Option 2)

That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, "What are you discussing as you walk along?" They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?" And he replied to them, "What sort of things?" They said to him, "The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see." And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?" So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!" Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached. He went about doing good and healing all who were under the devil's power, because God was with him; we are witnesses of all that he did throughout the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem itself. So then, brothers and sisters: If you are risen with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on earthly things. For you have died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, reveals himself, you also will be revealed with him in Glory.


Second reading (1 Corinthians 5: 6b–8) (Option 2)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Do you not know that a little yeast makes the whole mass of dough rise? Throw out, then, the old yeast and be new dough. If Christ became our Passover, you should be unleavened bread. Let us celebrate, therefore, the Passover, no longer with old yeast, which is sin and perversity; let us have unleavened bread, that is purity and sincerity.

Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved. And she stated to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter then set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down and saw the linen cloths lying flat, but he did not enter. Then Simon Peter came following him and entered the tomb; he, too, saw the linen cloths lying flat. The napkin, which had been around his head was not lying flat like the other linen cloths but lay rolled up in its place. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and believed. Scripture clearly stated that he must rise from the dead, but they had not yet understood that.

And he asked, "What is it?" They replied, "It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, you know, mighty in word and deed before God and the people. But the chief priests and our rulers sentenced him to death. They handed him over to be crucified. We had hoped that he wound redeem Israel. It is now the third day since all this took place. It is true that some women of our group have disturbed us. When they went to the tomb at dawn, they did not find his body; they came to tell us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that Jesus was alive. Some friends of our group went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had stated, but they did not see him." He stated to them, "How dull you are, how slow of understanding! You fail to believe the message of the prophets. Is it not written that the Christ should suffer all this and then enter his glory?" Then starting with Moses and going through the prophets, he explained to them everything in the Scriptures concerning himself. As they drew near the village they were heading for, Jesus made as if to go farther. But they prevailed upon him, "Stay with us, for night comes quickly. The day is now almost over." So he went in to stay with them. When they were at table, he took the bread, stated a blessing, broke it and gave each a piece. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but he vanished out of their sight And they stated to each other, "Were not our hearts filled with ardent yearning when he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures?" They immediately set out and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together. They were greeted by these words: "Yes, it is true, the Lord is risen! He has appeared to Simon!" Then the two told what had happened on the road and how Jesus made himself known when he broke bread with them.

    Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.”

    “The right hand of the LORD has struck with power; the right hand of the LORD is exalted. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.”

    The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes.

    The response is: This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.

    Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his loving kindness endures forever. Let Israel say, "His loving kindness endures forever."

    The right hand of the Lord is lifted high, the right hand of the Lord strikes mightily! I shall not die, but live to proclaim what the Lord has done.

    The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. This was the Lord's doing, and we marvel at it.

  3. Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer your thankful praises! A lamb the sheep redeems; Christ, who only is sinless, reconciles sinners to the Father. Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous: The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal. Speak, Mary, declaring, what you saw, wayfaring. "The tomb of Christ, who is living, the glory of Jesus' resurrection; bright angels attesting, the shroud and napkin resting. Yes, Christ my hope is arisen; to Galilee he goes before you." Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining. Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning! Amen. Alleluia.

    Entonces Pedro, tomando la palabra, dijo: “Ustedes ya saben qué ha ocurrido en toda Judea, comenzando por Galilea, después del bautismo que predicaba Juan: cómo Dios ungió a Jesús de Nazaret con el Espíritu Santo, llenándolo de poder. Él pasó haciendo el bien y curando a todos los que habían caído en poder del demonio, porque Dios estaba con él. Nosotros somos testigos de todo lo que hizo en el país de los judíos y en Jerusalén. Y ellos mataron, suspendiéndolo de un patíbulo.       Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según el San Juan.
      El primer día de la semana, de madrugada, cuando todavía estaba oscuro, María Magdalena fue al sepulcro y vio que la piedra había sido sacada. Corrió al encuentro de Simón Pedro y del otro discípulo al que Jesús amaba, y les dijo: “Se han llevado del sepulcro al Señor y no sabemos dónde lo han puesto.” Pedro y el otro discípulo salieron y fueron al sepulcro. Corrían los dos juntos, pero el otro discípulo corrió más rápidamente que Pedro y llegó antes. Asomándose al sepulcro, vio las vendas en el suelo, aunque no entró. Después llegó Simón Pedro, que lo seguía, y entró en el sepulcro; vio las vendas en el suelo, y también el sudario que había cubierto su cabeza; este no estaba con las vendas, sino enrollado en un lugar aparte. Luego entró el otro discípulo, que había llegado antes al sepulcro: él también vio y creyó. Todavía no habían comprendido que, según la Escritura, él debía resucitar de entre los muertos.

      Aquel mismo día dos discípulos se dirigían a un pueblecito llamado Emaús, que está a unos doce kilómetros de Jerusalén, e iban conversando sobre todo lo que había ocurrido. Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús en persona se les acercó y se puso a caminar con ellos, pero algo impedía que sus ojos lo reconocieran. Él les dijo: “¿De qué van discutiendo por el camino?” Se detuvieron, y parecían muy desanimados. Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le contestó: “¿Cómo? ¿Eres tú el único peregrino en Jerusalén que no está enterado de lo que ha pasado aquí estos días?” “¿Qué pasó?”, les preguntó. Le contestaron: “¡Todo el asunto de Jesús Nazareno!” Era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, reconocido por Dios y por todo el pueblo. Pero nuestros sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes renegaron de él, lo hicieron condenar a muerte y clavar en la cruz. Nosotros pensábamos que él sería el que debía libertar a Israel. Sea lo que sea, ya van dos días desde que sucedieron estas cosas.       Madilim-dilim pa nang unang araw ng sanlinggo, pumunta si Maria Magdalena sa libingan. Naratnan niyang naalis na ang batong nakatakip sa libingan. Dahil dito, patakbo siyang pumunta kay Simon Pedro at sa alagad na mahal ni Jesus, at sinabi sa kanila, “Kinuha nila ang Panginoon mula sa libingan, at hindi namin alam kung saan siya inilagay!” Sina Pedro at ang nasabing alagad ay nagpunta sa libingan. Kapwa sila tumakbo ngunit si Pedro'y naunahan noong isa. Yumuko ito at sumilip sa loob ng libingan ngunit hindi pumasok. Nakita niyang nakalagay doon ang mga telang lino. Nang dumating si Simon Pedro, tuluy-tuloy itong pumasok sa libingan at nakita nito ang mga telang lino, at ang panyong ibinalot sa ulo ni Jesus. Ang panyo ay hindi kasama ng mga telang lino, kundi hiwalay na nakatiklop sa isang tabi. Pumasok din ang alagad na naunang dumating at nakita niya ito, at siya'y naniwala. Habang sila'y nag-uusap, lumapit si Jesus at nakisabay sa kanila, ngunit siya'y hindi nila nakilala na para bang natatakpan ang kanilang mga mata. Tinanong sila ni Jesus, “Ano ba ang pinag-uusapan ninyo?” Tumigil silang nalulumbay, at sinabi ng isa sa kanila na nagngangalang Cleopas, “Ikaw lamang yata ang dayuhan sa Jerusalem na hindi nakakaalam sa mga pangyayaring katatapos lamang maganap doon.” “Anong mga pangyayari?” tanong niya. Pumunta rin sa libingan ang ilan sa mga kasama namin at ganoon nga ang natagpuan nila, ngunit hindi nila nakita si Jesus.” Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, “Kay hahangal ninyo! Kay kukupad ninyong maniwala sa lahat ng sinasabi ng mga propeta! Hindi ba't kailangang ang Cristo ay magtiis ng lahat ng ito bago siya pumasok sa kanyang kaluwalhatian?” At ipinaliwanag sa kanila ni Jesus ang lahat ng sinasabi sa Kasulatan tungkol sa kanya, simula sa mga aklat ni Moises hanggang sa mga sinulat ng mga propeta. Malapit na sila sa nayong kanilang pupuntahan at si Jesus ay parang magpapatuloy pa sa paglakad, ngunit siya'y pinigil nila. “Tumuloy ka muna rito sa amin. Nang siya'y kasalo na nila sa pagkain, dumampot siya ng tinapay at nagpasalamat sa Diyos; pagkatapos, pinagpira-piraso iyon at ibinigay sa kanila. Noon nabuksan ang kanilang mga mata at nakilala nila si Jesus, subalit siya'y biglang nawala sa kanilang paningin. Nasabi nila sa isa't isa, “Kaya pala nag-aalab ang ating puso habang tayo'y kinakausap niya sa daan at ipinapaliwanag sa atin ang mga Kasulatan!” Agad silang tumayo at nagbalik sa Jerusalem. Naratnan nilang nagkakatipon doon ang labing-isa at ang ibang kasamahan nila. Sinabi ng mga ito sa dalawa, “Totoo nga palang muling nabuhay ang Panginoon! Nagpakita siya kay Simon!” At isinalaysay naman ng dalawa ang nangyari sa daan at kung paano nila nakilala si Jesus nang paghati-hatiin nito ang tinapay.
