First reading (Isaiah 11: 1–10)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots, a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land's afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips, he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra's den, and the child lay his hand on the adder's lair. There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious.
Second reading (Romans 15: 4–9)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: Whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I say that Christ became a minister of the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, to confirm the promises to the patriarchs, but so that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: Therefore, I will praise you among the Gentiles and sing praises to your name.
Gospel (Matthew 3: 1–12)

John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Like a rod, his word will strike the oppressor, and the breath of his lips slay the wicked. Justice will be the girdle of his waist, truth the girdle of his loins. The wolf will dwell with the lamb, the leopard will rest beside the kid, the calf and the lion cub will feed together and a little child will lead them. Befriending each other, the cow and the bear will see their young ones lie down together. Like cattle, the lion will eat hay. By the cobra's den, the infant will play. On that day the "Root of Jesse" will be raised as a signal for the nations. The people will come in search of him, thus making his dwelling place glorious.
Second reading (Romans 15: 4–9)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: We know that whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, for both perseverance and comfort given us by the Scripture sustain our hope. May God, the source of all perseverance and comfort, give to all of you to live in peace in Christ Jesus, that you may be able to praise in one voice God, Father of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Welcome, then, one another, as Christ welcomed you for the glory of God. Look: Christ put himself at the service of the Jewish world to fulfill the promises made by God to their ancestors; here you see God's faithfulness. The pagans instead give thanks to God for his mercy, as Scripture says: Because of that, I will sing and praise your name among the pagans.

John had a leather garment around his waist and wore a cloak of camel's hair; his food was locusts and wild honey. People came to him from Jerusalem, from all Judea and from the whole Jordan valley, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan as they confessed their sins. When he saw several Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he baptized, he stated to them, "Brood of vipers! Who told you that you could escape the punishment that is to come? Let it be seen that you are serious in your conversion, and do not think: We have Abraham for our father. I tell you that God can raise children for Abraham from these stones! The ax is already laid to the roots of the trees; any tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire. I baptize you in water for a change of heart, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than me; indeed I am not worthy to carry his sandals. O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king's son; he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment.
Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save.
May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness.

Una rama saldrá del tronco de Jesé, un brote surgirá de sus raíces. Sobre él reposará el Espíritu de Yahvé, espíritu de sabiduría e inteligencia espíritu de prudencia y valentía, espíritu para conocer a Yahvé y para respetarlo, y para gobernar según sus preceptos. No juzgará por las apariencias ni se decidirá por lo que se dice, sino que hará justicia a los débiles y defenderá el derecho de los pobres del país. Su palabra derribará al opresor, el soplo de sus labios matará al malvado. Tendrá como cinturón la justicia, y la lealtad será el ceñidor de sus caderas. El lobo habitará con el cordero, el puma se acostará junto al cabrito, el ternero comerá al lado del león y un niño chiquito los cuidará. La vaca y el oso pastarán en compañía y sus crías reposarán juntas, pues el león también comerá pasto, igual que el buey. El niño de pecho jugará sobre el nido de la víbora, y en la cueva de la culebra el pequeñuelo meterá su mano. Ngayon pa lamang ay nakaamba na ang palakol sa ugat ng mga punongkahoy; ang bawat punong hindi mabuti ang bunga ay puputulin at itatapon sa apoy. “Binabautismuhan ko kayo sa tubig bilang patunay ng inyong pagsisisi at pagtalikod sa kasalanan. Ngunit ang darating na kasunod ko ay magbabautismo sa inyo sa Espiritu Santo at sa apoy. Higit siyang makapangyarihan kaysa akin; ni hindi man lamang ako karapat-dapat magdala ng kanyang sandalyas. Hawak na niya ang kanyang kalaykay upang alisin ang dayami. Titipunin niya sa kamalig ang trigo ngunit ang ipa ay susunugin sa apoy na di mamamatay kailanman.”

Roh TUHAN akan ada padanya, roh hikmat dan pengertian, roh nasihat dan keperkasaan, roh pengenalan dan takut akan TUHAN; ya, kesenangannya ialah takut akan TUHAN. Ia tidak akan menghakimi dengan sekilas pandang saja atau menjatuhkan keputusan menurut kata orang. Tetapi ia akan menghakimi orang-orang lemah dengan keadilan, dan akan menjatuhkan keputusan terhadap orang-orang yang tertindas di negeri dengan kejujuran; ia akan menghajar bumi dengan perkataannya seperti dengan tongkat, dan dengan nafas mulutnya ia akan membunuh orang fasik. Ia tidak akan menyimpang dari kebenaran dan kesetiaan, seperti ikat pinggang tetap terikat pada pinggang. Serigala akan tinggal bersama domba dan macan tutul akan berbaring di samping kambing. Anak lembu dan anak singa akan makan rumput bersama-sama, dan seorang anak kecil akan menggiringnya. Tidak ada yang akan berbuat jahat atau yang berlaku busuk di seluruh gunung-Ku yang kudus, sebab seluruh bumi penuh dengan pengenalan akan TUHAN, seperti air laut yang menutupi dasarnya. Maka pada waktu itu taruk dari pangkal Isai akan berdiri sebagai panji-panji bagi bangsa-bangsa; dia akan dicari oleh suku-suku bangsa dan tempat kediamannya akan menjadi mulia. Pada waktu itu Tuhan akan mengangkat pula tangan-Nya untuk menebus sisa-sisa umat-Nya yang tertinggal di Asyur dan di Mesir, di Patros, di Etiopia dan di Elam, di Sinear, di Hamat dan di pulau-pulau di laut.

Semoga Allah, yang adalah sumber ketekunan dan penghiburan, mengaruniakan kerukunan kepada kamu, sesuai dengan kehendak Kristus Yesus, sehingga dengan satu hati dan satu suara kamu memuliakan Allah dan Bapa Tuhan kita, Yesus Kristus. Sebab itu terimalah satu akan yang lain, sama seperti Kristus juga telah menerima kita, untuk kemuliaan Allah. Yang aku maksudkan ialah, bahwa oleh karena kebenaran Allah Kristus telah menjadi pelayan orang-orang bersunat untuk mengokohkan janji yang telah diberikan-Nya kepada nenek moyang kita, dan untuk memungkinkan bangsa-bangsa, supaya mereka memuliakan Allah karena rahmat-Nya, seperti ada tertulis: "Sebab itu aku akan memuliakan Engkau di antara bangsa-bangsa dan menyanyikan mazmur bagi nama-Mu."

Maka datanglah kepadanya penduduk dari Yerusalem, dari seluruh Yudea dan dari seluruh daerah sekitar Yordan. Lalu sambil mengaku dosanya mereka dibaptis oleh Yohanes di sungai Yordan. Tetapi waktu ia melihat banyak orang Farisi dan orang Saduki datang untuk dibaptis, berkatalah ia kepada mereka: “Hai kamu keturunan ular beludak. Siapakah yang mengatakan kepada kamu, bahwa kamu dapat melarikan diri dari murka yang akan datang? Jadi hasilkanlah buah yang sesuai dengan pertobatan. Dan janganlah mengira, bahwa kamu dapat berkata dalam hatimu: Abraham adalah bapa kami! Karena aku berkata kepadamu: Allah dapat menjadikan anak-anak bagi Abraham dari batu-batu ini! Kapak sudah tersedia pada akar pohon dan setiap pohon yang tidak menghasilkan buah yang baik, pasti ditebang dan dibuang ke dalam api. Aku membaptis kamu dengan air sebagai tanda pertobatan, tetapi Ia yang datang kemudian dari padaku lebih berkuasa dari padaku dan aku tidak layak melepaskan kasut-Nya. Ia akan membaptiskan kamu dengan Roh Kudus dan dengan api. Alat penampi sudah ditangan-Nya. Ia akan membersihkan tempat pengirikan-Nya dan mengumpulkan gandum-Nya ke dalam lumbung, tetapi debu jerami itu akan dibakar-Nya dalam api yang tidak terpadamkan."

ダビデ王の家系は切り倒されますが、その切り株から新芽が生え、そこから一本の若枝が出て、その上に主の霊が宿ります。それは知恵の霊、悟りの霊、助言と力の霊、知識の霊、そして主を恐れる霊です。この方は主に従うことを喜びとし、外見や捏造された証拠、うわさによってさばかず、貧しい人やさげすまれている人の味方になります。反対に、このような人にひどい仕打ちをする悪者どもには容赦しません。公平と真実を身にまとっているからです。その日には、狼と子羊がいっしょに休み、ひょうと子やぎは大の仲良しになります。子牛や丸々と太った家畜がライオンの間にいても心配はなく、小さい子どもがその群れを追って行きます。牛は熊の間に入り込んで草を食べ、その子らはじゃれ合い、ライオンは牛のように草を食べます。幼子が毒蛇の間をはい回ってもかまれず、子どもは平気でまむしの巣に手を入れます。主の聖なる山のどこででも、傷つけたり危害を加えたりするものは一つもありません。水が海を満たすように、主を知る知識が地にあふれるからです。その日、エッサイの家から出てダビデ王朝を開いたお方は、全世界の人々の救いの旗となって翻ります。この方のいる地は栄光のとどまる所となるので、国々の民がこの方のもとへ集まります。
第二読み物（ローマ人第15章：第4詩–第9詩）
この読み物はローマ人への手紙です。
ずっと昔に書かれたこのことばは、私たちに忍耐を教え、励ますためのものです。また、神が死と罪の力とを打ち破ってくださる時を、私たちが待ち望むためのものです。どうか、強い忍耐力と励ましを与える神が、あなたがたが一つ思いとなって暮らしていけるよう、助けてくださいますように。一人一人がキリストの模範にならって互いに接することができますように。そうして初めて、私たちはみな、主イエス・キリストの父なる神をほめたたえ、声を合わせて賛美できるのです。そういうわけですから、キリストがあなたがたを受け入れてくださったように、あなたがたも互いにあたたかく受け入れ合いなさい。そうすれば、神がほめたたえられるのです。イエス・キリストが来られたのは、神がご自分の約束に対して誠実な方であることを示すため、また、ユダヤ人を助けるためであったことを思い出してください。それはまた、外国人も救われて、自分たちに対する神のあわれみのゆえに神をほめたたえるためでもあったことを、思い出してください。次のように書かれているとおりです。
福音書（マタイ第3章：第1詩–第12詩）
この読み物はマタイによる福音書です。
ヨセフの一家がナザレに住んでいたころ、バプテスマのヨハネがユダヤの荒野で教えを宣べ始めて、言いました。「悔い改めて、神に立ち返れ。神の国が近づいたからだ。」このバプテスマのヨハネの働きについては、その数百年前、すでに預言者イザヤが語っています。「荒野から叫ぶ声が聞こえる。『主のための道を準備せよ。主が通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。』」ヨハネはらくだの毛で織った服に皮の帯をしめ、いなごとはちみつを常食にしていました。このヨハネの教えを聞こうと、エルサレムやヨルダン川流域だけでなく、ユダヤの全土から、人々が荒野に押しかけました。神にそむく生活を送っていたことを全面的に認め、それを言い表した人たちに、ヨハネはヨルダン川でバプテスマ（洗礼）を授けました。ところが、パリサイ派（特に律法を守ることに熱心なユダヤ教の一派）やサドカイ派（神殿を支配していた祭司階級。ユダヤ教の主流派）の人々が大ぜい、バプテスマを受けに来たのを見て、ヨハネは彼らをきびしく責めました。「まむしの子たち！だれがおまえたちに、もうすぐ来る神のさばきから逃れられると言ったのか。バプテスマを受ける前に、悔い改めにふさわしいことをしなさい。『私はユダヤ人だから、アブラハムの子孫だから大丈夫』などと思ってはいけない。そんなことは何の役にも立たない。神はこんな石ころからでも、今すぐアブラハムの子孫をお造りになれるのだ。今にでも、神はさばきの斧をふり上げ、実のならない木を切り倒そうと待ちかまえておられる。そんな木はすぐにも切り倒され、燃やされるのだ。私は今、罪を悔い改める者たちに水でバプテスマを授けている。しかし、まもなく私など比べものにもならない、はるかに偉大な方がおいでになる。その方のしもべとなる価値さえ、私にはない。その方は、聖霊と火でバプテスマをお授けになり、刈り入れの時が来たら、麦ともみがらをふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、もみがらは永久に消えない火で焼き捨ててしまわれる。」

エッサイの株からひとつの芽が萌えいでその根からひとつの若枝が育ちその上に主の霊がとどまる。知恵と識別の霊思慮と勇気の霊主を知り、畏れ敬う霊。彼は主を畏れ敬う霊に満たされる。目に見えるところによって裁きを行わず耳にするところによって弁護することはない。弱い人のために正当な裁きを行いこの地の貧しい人を公平に弁護する。その口の鞭をもって地を打ち唇の勢いをもって逆らう者を死に至らせる。正義をその腰の帯とし真実をその身に帯びる。狼は小羊と共に宿り豹は子山羊と共に伏す。子牛は若獅子と共に育ち小さい子供がそれらを導く。牛も熊も共に草をはみその子らは共に伏し獅子も牛もひとしく干し草を食らう。乳飲み子は毒蛇の穴に戯れ幼子は蝮の巣に手を入れる。わたしの聖なる山においては何ものも害を加えず、滅ぼすこともない。水が海を覆っているように大地は主を知る知識で満たされる。その日が来ればエッサイの根はすべての民の旗印として立てられ国々はそれを求めて集う。そのとどまるところは栄光に輝く。
第二読み物（ローマ人第15章：第4詩–第9詩）
この読み物はローマ人への手紙です。
かつて書かれた事柄は、すべてわたしたちを教え導くためのものです。それでわたしたちは、聖書から忍耐と慰めを学んで希望を持ち続けることができるのです。忍耐と慰めの源である神が、あなたがたに、キリスト・イエスに倣って互いに同じ思いを抱かせ、心を合わせ声をそろえて、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの神であり、父である方をたたえさせてくださいますように。だから、神の栄光のためにキリストがあなたがたを受け入れてくださったように、あなたがたも互いに相手を受け入れなさい。わたしは言う。キリストは神の真実を現すために、割礼ある者たちに仕える者となられたのです。それは、先祖たちに対する約束を確証されるためであり、異邦人が神をその憐れみのゆえにたたえるようになるためです。「そのため、わたしは異邦人の中であなたをたたえ、あなたの名をほめ歌おう」と書いてあるとおりです。

そのころ、洗礼者ヨハネが現れて、ユダヤの荒れ野で宣べ伝え、「悔い改めよ。天の国は近づいた」と言った。これは預言者イザヤによってこう言われている人である。「荒れ野で叫ぶ者の声がする。『主の道を整え、その道筋をまっすぐにせよ。』」ヨハネは、らくだの毛衣を着、腰に革の帯を締め、いなごと野蜜を食べ物としていた。そこで、エルサレムとユダヤ全土から、また、ヨルダン川沿いの地方一帯から、人々がヨハネのもとに来て、罪を告白し、ヨルダン川で彼から洗礼を受けた。ヨハネは、ファリサイ派やサドカイ派の人々が大勢、洗礼を受けに来たのを見て、こう言った。「蝮の子らよ、差し迫った神の怒りを免れると、だれが教えたのか。悔い改めにふさわしい実を結べ。『我々の父はアブラハムだ』などと思ってもみるな。言っておくが、神はこんな石からでも、アブラハムの子たちを造り出すことがおできになる。斧は既に木の根元に置かれている。良い実を結ばない木はみな、切り倒されて火に投げ込まれる。わたしは、悔い改めに導くために、あなたたちに水で洗礼を授けているが、わたしの後から来る方は、わたしよりも優れておられる。わたしは、その履物をお脱がせする値打ちもない。その方は、聖霊と火であなたたちに洗礼をお授けになる。そして、手に箕を持って、脱穀場を隅々まできれいにし、麦を集めて倉に入れ、殻を消えることのない火で焼き払われる。」
最近色々な場所で、マーケティングに関係する言葉を聞くことがあります。職場では、「本当に顧客のニーズはあるの？」と叫ぶ上司がいたり、「この商品のポジショニングですが…」とプロジェクターを使って説明を始める取引先がいたり、また外部のセミナーに行くと、「マスからワン・ツー・ワンへ」「CRMの時代だ」と騒がしい。プライベートでも、テレビを付ければ「新しいライフスタイルを提案する…」と始まる。そして、あなたが、この本を手に取っている本屋では、マーケティング関連本のコーナーがあり、数多くのマーケティング本が並んでいる。
