First reading (Sirach 15: 15–20)
A reading from the book of Sirach.
If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live; he has set before you fire and water to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing. The eyes of God are on those who fear him; he understands man’s every deed. No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin.
Second reading (1 Corinthians 2: 6–10)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
Gospel (Matthew 5: 17–37)

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna. “It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife -- unless the marriage is unlawful --causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,' and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”

If you wish, you can keep the commandments and it is in your power to remain faithful. He has set fire and water before you; you stretch out your hand to whichever you prefer. Life and death are set before man: whichever a man prefers will be given him. How magnificent is the wisdom of the Lord! He is powerful and all-seeing. His eyes are on those who fear him. He knows all the works of man. He has commanded no one to be godless and has given no one permission to sin.
Second reading (1 Corinthians 2: 6–10)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: We do speak of wisdom to the mature in faith, although it is not a wisdom of his world or of its rulers, who, by the way, come to nothing. We teach the mystery and secret plan of divine wisdom, which God destined from the beginning to bring us to Glory. No ruler of this world ever knew this; otherwise, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. But as Scripture states: Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it dawned on the mind what God has prepared for those who love him. God has revealed it to us, through his Spirit, because the Spirit probes everything, even the depth of God.
Gospel (Matthew 5: 17–37)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus continued to teach the crowd while his disciples gathered around him. Jesus stated: "Do not think that I have come to remove the Law and the Prophets. I have not come to remove but to fulfill them. I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smallest letter or stroke of the Law will change until all is fulfilled. So then, whoever breaks the least important of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them and teaches other to do the same will be great in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, then, that if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was stated to our people in the past: Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council; whoever humiliates a brother or sister deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell. So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Do not forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise, he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was stated: Do not commit adultery. But I tell you this: anyone who looks at a woman to satisfy his lust has in fact already committed adultery with her in his heart. So, if your right eye causes you to sin, pull it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell. It was also stated: anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. But what I tell you is this: If a man divorces his wife except in the case of an unlawful union, he causes her to commit adultery. And the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. You have also heard that people were told in the past: Do not break your oath; an oath sworn to the Lord must be kept. But I tell you this: do not take oaths. Do not swear by the heavens, for they are God's throne, nor by the earth, because it is his footstool, nor be Jerusalem because it is the city of the great king. Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. Say yes when you mean yes and say no when you mean no. Anything else you say comes from the devil."

Si quieres, puedes observar los mandamientos y cumplir fielmente lo que le agrada. Él puso ante ti el fuego y el agua: hacia lo que quieras, extenderás tu mano. Ante los hombres están la vida y la muerte: a cada uno se le dará lo que prefiera. Porque grande es la sabiduría del Señor, él es fuerte y poderoso, y ve todas las cosas. Sus ojos están fijos en aquellos que lo temen y él conoce todas las obras del hombre. A nadie le ordenó ser impío ni dio a nadie autorización para pecar.
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 119) (Versículos 1–2, 4–5, 17–18, y 33–34)
La respuesta es: Felices los que siguen la ley del Señor.
• Felices los que van por un camino intachable, los que siguen la ley del Señor. Felices los que cumplen sus prescripciones y lo buscan de todo corazón.
• Tú promulgaste tus mandamientos para que se cumplieran íntegramente. ¡Ojalá yo me mantenga firme en la observancia de tus preceptos!

Segunda lectura (1 Corintios 2: 6–10)
Una lectura de la primera carta de San Pablo a los Corintios.
Es verdad que anunciamos una sabiduría entre aquellos que son personas espiritualmente maduras, pero no la sabiduría de este mundo ni la que ostentan los dominadores de este mundo, condenados a la destrucción. Lo que anunciamos es una sabiduría de Dios, misteriosa y secreta, que él preparó para nuestra gloria antes que existiera el mundo; aquella que ninguno de los dominadores de este mundo alcanzó a conocer, porque si la hubieran conocido no habrían crucificado al Señor de la gloria. Nosotros anunciamos, como dice la Escritura, lo que nadie vio ni oyó y ni siquiera pudo pensar, aquello que Dios preparó para los que lo aman. Dios nos reveló todo esto por medio del Espíritu, porque el Espíritu lo penetra todo, hasta lo más íntimo de Dios.

Jesús continuaba enseñando a la multitud, “No crean que haya venido a suprimir la Ley o los Profetas. He venido, no para deshacer, sino para traer lo definitivo. En verdad les digo: mientras dure el cielo y la tierra, no pasará una letra o una coma de la Ley hasta que todo se realice. Por tanto, el que ignore el último de esos mandamientos y enseñe a los demás a hacer lo mismo, será el más pequeño en el Reino de los Cielos. En cambio el que los cumpla y los enseñe, será grande en el Reino de los Cielos. Yo se lo digo: si no se proponen algo más perfecto que lo de los fariseos, o de los maestros de la Ley, ustedes no pueden entrar en el Reino de los Cielos. Ustedes han escuchado lo que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No matarás; el homicida tendrá que enfrentarse a un juicio.” Pero yo les digo: Si uno se enoja con su hermano, es cosa que merece juicio. El que ha insultado a su hermano, merece ser llevado ante el Tribunal Supremo; si lo ha tratado de renegado de la fe, merece ser arrojado al fuego del infierno. Por eso, si tú estás para presentar tu ofrenda en el altar, y te acuerdas de que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti, deja allí mismo tu ofrenda ante el altar, y vete antes a hacer las paces con tu hermano; después vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda. Trata de llegar a un acuerdo con tu adversario mientras van todavía de camino al juicio. ¿O prefieres que te entregue al juez, y el juez a los guardias, que te encerrarán en la cárcel? En verdad te digo: no saldrás de allí hasta que hayas pagado hasta el último centavo. Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “No cometerás adulterio.” Pero yo les digo: Quien mira a una mujer con malos deseos, ya cometió adulterio con ella en su corazón. Por eso, si tu ojo derecho te está haciendo caer, sácatelo y tíralo lejos; porque más te conviene perder una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno. Y si tu mano derecha te lleva al pecado, córtala y aléjala de ti; porque es mejor que pierdas una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno. Los ojos del Señor ven con agrado a quienes lo temen; el Señor conoce todas las obras del hombre. A nadie le ha mandado ser impío y a nadie le ha dado permiso de pecar.

Hermanos: Es cierto que a los adultos en la fe les predicamos la sabiduría, pero no la sabiduría de este mundo ni la de aquellos que dominan al mundo, los cuales van a quedar aniquilados. Por el contrario, predicamos una sabiduría divina, misteriosa, que ha permanecido oculta y que fue prevista por Dios desde antes de los siglos, para conducirnos a la gloria. Ninguno de los que dominan este mundo la conoció, porque, de haberla conocido, nunca hubieran crucificado al Señor de la gloria. Pero lo que nosotros predicamos es, como dice la Escritura, que lo que Dios ha preparado para los que lo aman, ni el ojo lo ha visto, ni el oído lo ha escuchado, ni la mente del hombre pudo siquiera haberlo imaginado. A nosotros, en cambio, Dios nos lo ha revelado por el Espíritu que conoce perfectamente todo, hasta lo más profundo de Dios.

Les aseguro que si su justicia no es mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, ciertamente no entrarán ustedes en el Reino de los cielos. Han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No matarás y el que mate será llevado ante el tribunal. Pero yo les digo: Todo el que se enoje con su hermano, será llevado también ante el tribunal; el que insulte a su hermano, será llevado ante el tribunal supremo, y el que lo desprecie, será llevado al fuego del lugar de castigo. Por lo tanto, si cuando vas a poner tu ofrenda sobre el altar, te acuerdas allí mismo de que tu hermano tiene alguna queja contra ti, deja tu ofrenda junto al altar y ve primero a reconciliarte con tu hermano, y vuelve luego a presentar tu ofrenda. Arréglate pronto con tu adversario, mientras vas con él por el camino; no sea que te entregue al juez, el juez al policía y te metan a la cárcel. Kung gusto mo, masusunod mo ang utos ng Panginoon, ikaw ang magpapasya kung magiging tapat ka sa kanya o hindi. Naglagay siya sa harapan mo ng tubig at ng apoy, kunin mo ang iyong magustuhan. Makakapili ka ng alinman sa dalawa: buhay o kamatayan, ang iyong mapili ang siya mong patutunguhan. Dakila ang Karunungan at kapangyarihan ng Panginoon; nakikita niya ang lahat ng bagay. Nalalaman niya ang lahat ng ginagawa ng bawat tao, at kinakalinga niya ang mga may takot sa kanya. Kailanma'y wala siyang inutusang magpakasama, o pinahintulutang magkasala.
Pangalawang pagbabasa (1 Corinto 2: 6–10)

Gayunpaman, sa mga taong matatag na sa buhay espirituwal ay nangangaral kami ng salita ng karunungan, hindi karunungan ng mundong ito, o ng mga tagapamahala sa mundong ito na ang kapangyarihan ay lilipas. Subalit ang ipinapahayag namin ay ang lihim na karunungan ng Diyos na hindi nahayag noong una, na itinalaga na niya para sa ating ikaluluwalhati bago pa likhain ang sanlibutan. Walang isa man sa mga tagapamahala sa daigdig na ito ang nakaunawa sa karunungang iyon, sapagkat kung naunawaan nila iyon, hindi sana nila ipinako sa krus ang Panginoon ng kaluwalhatian. Subalit tulad ng nasusulat, “Hindi pa nakikita ng mata, o naririnig ng tainga, ni hindi pa sumasagi sa isip ng tao ang mga inihanda ng Diyos para sa mga umiibig sa kanya.” Ngunit ito'y inihayag na ng Diyos sa atin sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu. Sinasaliksik ng Espiritu ang lahat ng bagay, maging ang mga pinakamalalim na bagay na may kinalaman sa Diyos.

Asal sungguh mau engkau dapat menepati hukum, dan berlaku setiapun dapat kaupilih. Api dan air telah ditaruh oleh Tuhan di hadapanmu, kepada apa yang kaukehendaki dapat kauulurkan tanganmu. Hidup dan mati terletak di depan manusia, apa yang dipilih akan diberikan kepadanya. Sungguh besarlah kebijaksanaan Tuhan, Ia adalah kuat dalam kekuasaan-Nya dan melihat segala-galanya. Mata Tuhan tertuju kepada orang yang takut kepada-Nya, dan segenap pekerjaan manusia Ia kenal. Tuhan tidak menyuruh orang menjadi fasik, dan tidak memberi izin kepada siapapun untuk berdosa.
Mazmur (Mazmur 119) (Ayat 1–2, 4–5, 17–18, dan 33–34)
Tanggapan adalah: Berbahagialah orang-orang yang hidup menurut Taurat TUHAN.

Sungguhpun demikian kami memberitakan hikmat di kalangan mereka yang telah matang, yaitu hikmat yang bukan dari dunia ini, dan yang bukan dari penguasa-penguasa dunia ini, yaitu penguasa-penguasa yang akan ditiadakan. Tetapi yang kami beritakan ialah hikmat Allah yang tersembunyi dan rahasia, yang sebelum dunia dijadikan, telah disediakan Allah bagi kemuliaan kita. Tidak ada dari penguasa dunia ini yang mengenalnya, sebab kalau sekiranya mereka mengenalnya, mereka tidak menyalibkan Tuhan yang mulia. Tetapi seperti ada tertulis: "Apa yang tidak pernah dilihat oleh mata, dan tidak pernah didengar oleh telinga, dan yang tidak pernah timbul di dalam hati manusia: semua yang disediakan Allah untuk mereka yang mengasihi Dia." Karena kepada kita Allah telah menyatakannya oleh Roh, sebab Roh menyelidiki segala sesuatu, bahkan hal-hal yang tersembunyi dalam diri Allah.

しかし、わたしたちは、信仰に成熟した人たちの間では知恵を語ります。それはこの世の知恵ではなく、また、この世の滅びゆく支配者たちの知恵でもありません。わたしたちが語るのは、隠されていた、神秘としての神の知恵であり、神がわたしたちに栄光を与えるために、世界の始まる前から定めておられたものです。この世の支配者たちはだれ一人、この知恵を理解しませんでした。もし理解していたら、栄光の主を十字架につけはしなかったでしょう。しかし、このことは、「目が見もせず、耳が聞きもせず、人の心に思い浮かびもしなかったことを、神は御自分を愛する者たちに準備された」と書いてあるとおりです。わたしたちには、神が“霊”によってそのことを明らかに示してくださいました。“霊”は一切のことを、神の深みさえも究めます。

Se vuoi, osserverai i comandamenti; l'essere fedele dipenderà dal tuo buonvolere. Egli ti ha posto davanti il fuoco e l'acqua; là dove vuoi stenderai la tua mano. Davanti agli uomini stanno la vita e la morte; a ognuno sarà dato ciò che a lui piacerà. Grande infatti è la sapienza del Signore, egli è onnipotente e vede tutto. I suoi occhi su coloro che lo temono, egli conosce ogni azione degli uomini. Egli non ha comandato a nessuno di essere empio e non ha dato a nessuno il permesso di peccare.
Seconda lettura (1 Corinzi 2: 6–10)
Una lettura dalla prima lettera di San Paolo ai Corinzi.
Tra i perfetti parliamo, sì, di sapienza, ma di una sapienza che non è di questo mondo, né dei dominatori di questo mondo che vengono ridotti al nulla; parliamo di una sapienza divina, misteriosa, che è rimasta nascosta, e che Dio ha preordinato prima dei secoli per la nostra gloria. Nessuno dei dominatori di questo mondo ha potuto conoscerla; se l'avessero conosciuta, non avrebbero crocifisso il Signore della gloria. Sta scritto infatti: Quelle cose che occhio non vide, né orecchio udì, né mai entrarono in cuore di uomo, queste ha preparato Dio per coloro che lo amano. Ma a noi Dio le ha rivelate per mezzo dello Spirito; lo Spirito infatti scruta ogni cosa, anche le profondità di Dio.

Poiché io vi dico: se la vostra giustizia non supererà quella degli scribi e dei farisei, non entrerete nel regno dei cieli. Avete inteso che fu detto agli antichi: Non uccidere; chi avrà ucciso sarà sottoposto a giudizio. Ma io vi dico: chiunque si adira con il proprio fratello, sarà sottoposto a giudizio. Chi poi dice al fratello: stupido, sarà sottoposto al sinedrio; e chi gli dice: pazzo, sarà sottoposto al fuoco della Geenna. Se dunque presenti la tua offerta sull'altare e lì ti ricordi che tuo fratello ha qualche cosa contro di te, lascia lì il tuo dono davanti all'altare e và prima a riconciliarti con il tuo fratello e poi torna ad offrire il tuo dono. Mettiti presto d'accordo con il tuo avversario mentre sei per via con lui, perché l'avversario non ti consegni al giudice e il giudice alla guardia e tu venga gettato in prigione. In verità ti dico: non uscirai di là finché tu non abbia pagato fino all'ultimo spicciolo! Avete inteso che fu detto: Non commettere adulterio; ma io vi dico: chiunque guarda una donna per desiderarla, ha gia commesso adulterio con lei nel suo cuore. Se il tuo occhio destro ti è occasione di scandalo, cavalo e gettalo via da te: conviene che perisca uno dei tuoi membri, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo venga gettato nella Geenna. E se la tua mano destra ti è occasione di scandalo, tagliala e gettala via da te: conviene che perisca uno dei tuoi membri, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo vada a finire nella Geenna. Fu pure detto: Chi ripudia la propria moglie, le dia l'atto di ripudio; ma io vi dico: chiunque ripudia sua moglie, eccetto il caso di concubinato, la espone all'adulterio e chiunque sposa una ripudiata, commette adulterio. Avete anche inteso che fu detto agli antichi: Non spergiurare, ma adempi con il Signore i tuoi giuramenti; ma io vi dico: non giurate affatto: né per il cielo, perché è il trono di Dio; né per la terra, perché è lo sgabello per i suoi piedi; né per Gerusalemme, perché è la città del gran re.
