New American Bible readings
First reading (Exodus 17: 3–7)
A reading from the book of Exodus.
In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!” The LORD answered Moses, “Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.” This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel. The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD in our midst or not?”
Second reading (Romans 5: 1–2 and 5–8)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brothers and sisters: Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
Gospel (John 4: 5–42)

Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” — For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans. — Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go call your husband and come back.” The woman answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.” Jesus answered her, “You are right in saying, ‘I do not have a husband.’ For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one speaking with you.” At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, “What are you looking for?” or “Why are you talking with her?” The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, “Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Christ?” They went out of the town and came to him. Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, ‘In four months the harvest will be here’? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. The reaper is already receiving payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. For here the saying is verified that ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work.” Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me everything I have done.” When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”

Brothers and sisters: By faith, we have received true righteousness, and we are at peace with God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through him, we obtain this favor in which we remain and we even boast to expect the Glory of God. Hope does not disappoint us because the Holy Spirit has been given to us, pouring into our hearts the love of God. Consider, moreover, the time that Christ died for us: when we were still sinners and unable to do anything. Few would accept to die for an upright person, perhaps someone would dare to die. But see how God manifested his love for us: while we were still sinners, Christ has died for us.

At this point the disciples returned and were surprised that Jesus was speaking with a woman; however, no one stated, "What do you want?" or: "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar and ran to the town. There she stated to the people, "Come and see a man who told me everything I did! Could he not be the Christ?" So they left the town and went to meet him. In the meantime, the disciples urged Jesus, "Master, eat." But he stated to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." And the disciples wondered, "Has anyone brought him food?" Jesus stated to them, "My food is to do the will of the One who sent me and to carry out his work. You say that in four more months it will be the harvest; now, I say to you, look up and see the fields white and ready for harvesting. People who reap the harvest are paid for their work and the fruit is gathered for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. Indeed the saying holds true: 'One sow and another reaps.' I sent you to reap where you did not work or suffer: others have worked and you are now sharing in their labors." In that town, many Samaritans believed in him when they heard the woman who declared, "He told me everything I did." So, when they came to him, they asked him to stay with them and Jesus stayed there for two days. After that many more believed because of his own words and they stated to the woman, "We no longer believe because of what you told us; for we have heard for ourselves and we know that this is the Savior of the world."
The response is: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
ReplyDeleteCome, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice: “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works.”

Allí el pueblo, atormentado por la sed, murmuró contra Moisés: “¿Por qué nos has hecho salir de Egipto? ¿Para que ahora muramos de sed con nuestros hijos y nuestros animales?” Entonces Moisés llamó al Señor y le dijo: “¿Qué puedo hacer con este pueblo? Por poco me apedrean.” El Señor respondió a Moisés: “Preséntate al pueblo, lleva contigo algunos jefes de Israel, lleva también en tu mano el bastón con que golpeaste el río Nilo. Yo estaré allá delante de ti, sobre la roca. Golpearás la roca y de ella saldrá agua, y el pueblo tendrá para beber.” Moisés lo hizo así, en presencia de los jefes de Israel. Aquel lugar se llamó Masá (o sea, tentación) y Meribá (o sea, quejas), a causa de las quejas de los israelitas que allí tentaron al Señor, diciendo: “¿Está el Señor en medio de nosotros o no?”
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 95) (Versículos 1–2 y 6–9)
La respuesta es: Si hoy no oyes su voz, no endurezcas tu corazón.
• ¡Vengan, cantemos con júbilo al Señor, aclamemos a la Roca que nos salva! ¡Lleguemos hasta él dándole gracias, aclamemos con música al Señor!
• ¡Entren, inclinémonos para adorarlo! ¡Doblemos la rodilla ante el Señor que nos creó! Porque él es nuestro Dios, y nosotros, el pueblo que él apacienta, las ovejas conducidas por su mano.

Justificados, entonces, por la fe, estamos en paz con Dios, por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Por él hemos alcanzado, mediante la fe, la gracia en la que estamos afianzados, y por él nos gloriamos en la esperanza de la gloria de Dios. Y la esperanza no quedará defraudada, porque el amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo, que nos ha sido dado. En efecto, cuando todavía éramos débiles, Cristo, en el tiempo señalado, murió por los pecadores. Difícilmente se encuentra alguien que dé su vida por un hombre justo; tal vez alguno sea capaz de morir por un bienhechor. Pero la prueba de que Dios nos ama es que Cristo murió por nosotros cuando todavía éramos pecadores.

Porque en esto se cumple el proverbio: “Uno siembra y otro cosecha.” Yo los envié a cosechar adonde ustedes no han trabajado; otros han trabajado, y ustedes recogen el fruto de sus esfuerzos.” Muchos samaritanos de esta ciudad habían creído en él por la palabra de la mujer, que atestiguaba: “Me ha dicho todo lo que hice.” Por eso, cuando los samaritanos se acercaron a Jesús, le rogaban que se quedara con ellos, y él permaneció allí dos días. Ngunit talagang uhaw na uhaw na ang mga Israelita, kaya sinumbatan nila si Moises, “Inilabas mo ba kami sa Egipto para patayin sa uhaw pati mga anak namin at mga alagang hayop?” Kaya, humingi ng tulong si Moises sa Panginoon, “Ano ang gagawin ko sa mga taong ito? Gusto na nila akong batuhin?” Sumagot ang Panginoon, “Magsama ka ng ilang pinuno ng Israel at mauna kayo sa mga Israelita. Dalhin mo ang iyong tungkod na inihampas mo sa Ilog Nilo at lumakad na kayo. Hihintayin ko kayo sa ibabaw ng malaking bato sa Sinai. Hampasin mo ito at bubukal ang tubig na maiinom ng mga tao.” Iyon nga ang ginawa ni Moises; at ito'y nasaksihan ng mga kasama niyang pinuno ng Israel. Ang lugar na iyon ay pinangalanan niyang “Masah” at “Meriba” sapagkat nagtalu-talo doon ang mga Israelita at sinubok nila ang Panginoon. Ang pinagtalunan nila ay kung pinapatnubayan nga sila ng Panginoon o hindi.
Pangalawang pagbabasa (Roma 5: 1–2 at 5–8)

Sapagkat napawalang-sala na tayo sa pamamagitan ng ating pananampalataya, mayroon na tayong mapayapang ugnayan sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ng ating Panginoong Jesu-Cristo. Sa pamamagitan ng pagsampalataya kay Jesu-Cristo, tinamasa natin ang kagandahang-loob ng Diyos, at tayo'y nagagalak dahil sa pag-asang tayo'y makakabahagi sa kanyang kaluwalhatian. At hindi tayo binibigo ng pag-asang ito sapagkat ang pag-ibig ng Diyos ay ibinuhos na sa ating mga puso sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu Santo na ipinagkaloob sa atin. Sapagkat noong tayo'y mahihina pa, namatay si Cristo sa takdang panahon para sa mga makasalanan. Mahirap mangyaring ialay ninuman ang kanyang buhay alang-alang sa isang taong matuwid, kahit na maaaring may mangahas na gumawa nito alang-alang sa isang taong mabuti. Ngunit pinatunayan ng Diyos ang kanyang pag-ibig sa atin nang mamatay si Cristo para sa atin noong tayo'y makasalanan pa.

May isang Samaritanang dumating upang umigib, at sinabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Maaari bang makiinom?” Wala noon ang kanyang mga alagad dahil sila'y bumibili ng pagkain sa bayan. Sinabi sa kanya ng babae, “Ikaw ay Judio at Samaritana naman ako. Bakit ka humihingi sa akin ng inumin?” Sinabi niya iyon sapagkat hindi nakikihalubilo ang mga Judio sa mga Samaritano. Sumagot si Jesus, “Kung alam mo lamang ang kaloob ng Diyos, at kung sino itong humihingi sa iyo ng inumin, ikaw ang hihingi sa kanya at bibigyan ka niya ng tubig na nagbibigay-buhay.” Nagsalita ang babae, “Ginoo, malalim ang balong ito at wala ka namang pansalok. Saan ka kukuha ng tubig na nagbibigay-buhay? Ang balong ito ay pamana pa sa amin ng aming ninunong si Jacob. Dito siya uminom, gayundin ang kanyang mga anak at mga hayop. Higit ka pa ba sa kanya?” Sumagot si Jesus, “Ang bawat uminom ng tubig na ito'y muling mauuhaw, ngunit ang sinumang uminom ng tubig na ibibigay ko sa kanya ay hindi na muling mauuhaw kailanman. Ang tubig na ibibigay ko ay magiging batis sa loob niya, at patuloy na bubukal at magbibigay sa kanya ng buhay na walang hanggan.” Sinabi ng babae, “Ginoo, bigyan po ninyo ako ng tubig na iyan upang hindi na ako mauhaw, ni pumarito pa upang sumalok muli.” “Umuwi ka at isama mo rito ang iyong asawa,” wika ni Jesus. “Wala akong asawa,” sagot ng babae. Sinabi ni Jesus, “Tama ang sinabi mong wala kang asawa, sapagkat lima na ang iyong naging asawa, at ang kinakasama mo ngayon ay hindi mo asawa. Totoo nga ang sinabi mo.” Sinabi ng babae, “Ginoo, palagay ko ay isa kang propeta. Dito sa bundok na ito sumamba sa Diyos ang aming mga ninuno, ngunit sinasabi ninyong mga Judio na sa Jerusalem lamang dapat sambahin ang Diyos.” Sinabi naman ni Jesus, “Maniwala ka sa akin, darating ang panahon na sasambahin ninyo ang Ama hindi na sa bundok na ito o sa Jerusalem. Hindi ninyo kilala ang inyong sinasamba, ngunit kilala namin ang aming sinasamba, sapagkat ang kaligtasan ay nagmumula sa mga Judio. Subalit dumarating na ang panahon at ngayon na nga, na ang mga tunay na sumasamba sa Ama ay sasamba sa kanya sa espiritu at sa katotohanan. Sapagkat ganyan ang uri ng pagsambang ninanais ng Ama. Ang Diyos ay Espiritu at ang mga sumasamba sa kanya ay dapat siyang sambahin sa espiritu at sa katotohanan.” Sinabi ng babae, “Nalalaman ko pong darating ang Mesiyas, ang tinatawag na Cristo. Pagdating niya, siya ang magpapahayag sa amin ng lahat ng bagay.” “Akong kausap mo ngayon ang iyong tinutukoy,” sabi ni Jesus.
Dumating ang kanyang mga alagad nang sandaling iyon, at nagtaka sila nang makita nilang nakikipag-usap si Jesus sa isang Samaritana. Ngunit isa man sa kanila'y walang nagtanong sa babae, “Ano ang kailangan ninyo?” Wala ring nagtanong kay Jesus, “Bakit ninyo siya kinakausap?” Iniwan ng babae ang kanyang banga, bumalik sa bayan at sinabi sa mga tagaroon, “Halikayo! Tingnan ninyo ang taong nagsabi sa akin ng lahat ng ginawa ko. Siya na kaya ang Cristo?” Kaya't lumabas ng bayan ang mga tao at nagpunta kay Jesus. Sinasabi ko naman sa inyo, masdan ninyo ang mga bukid, hinog na ang trigo at handa nang anihin. Ang umaani ay tumatanggap ng kabayaran at nagtitipon ng bunga para sa buhay na walang hanggan. Kaya't magkasamang magagalak ang nagtatanim at ang umaani. Dito nagkakatotoo ang kasabihang, ‘Iba ang nagtatanim at iba naman ang umaani.’ Isinugo ko kayo upang anihin ang hindi ninyo itinanim. Iba ang naghirap dito at kayo naman ang umani ng kanilang pinaghirapan.” Maraming Samaritano sa bayang iyon ang naniwala kay Jesus dahil sa patotoo ng babae, “Sinabi niya sa akin ang lahat ng aking ginawa.” Kaya't pumunta sila kay Jesus at nakiusap na tumigil muna siya roon, at tumigil nga siya roon sa loob ng dalawang araw. At marami pang sumampalataya nang mapakinggan siya. Pagkatapos, sinabi nila sa babae, “Naniniwala kami ngayon, hindi na dahil sa sinabi mo kundi dahil sa narinig namin siya. Alam na naming siya nga ang Tagapagligtas ng sangkatauhan.”

Hauslah bangsa itu akan air di sana; bersungut-sungutlah bangsa itu kepada Musa dan berkata: "Mengapa pula engkau memimpin kami keluar dari Mesir, untuk membunuh kami, anak-anak kami dan ternak kami dengan kehausan?" Lalu berseru-serulah Musa kepada TUHAN, katanya: "Apakah yang akan kulakukan kepada bangsa ini? Sebentar lagi mereka akan melempari aku dengan batu!" Berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Musa: "Berjalanlah di depan bangsa itu dan bawalah beserta engkau beberapa orang dari antara para tua-tua Israel; bawalah juga di tanganmu tongkatmu yang kaupakai memukul sungai Nil dan pergilah. Maka Aku akan berdiri di sana di depanmu di atas gunung batu di Horeb; haruslah kaupukul gunung batu itu dan dari dalamnya akan keluar air, sehingga bangsa itu dapat minum." Demikianlah diperbuat Musa di depan mata tua-tua Israel. Dinamailah tempat itu Masa dan Meriba, oleh karena orang Israel telah bertengkar dan oleh karena mereka telah mencobai TUHAN dengan mengatakan: "Adakah TUHAN di tengah-tengah kita atau tidak?"
Bacaan kedua (Roma 5: 1–2 dan 5–8)
Pembacaan dari surat Paulus kepada jemaat di Roma.
Sebab itu, kita yang dibenarkan karena iman, kita hidup dalam damai sejahtera dengan Allah oleh karena Tuhan kita, Yesus Kristus. Oleh Dia kita juga beroleh jalan masuk oleh iman kepada kasih karunia ini. Di dalam kasih karunia ini kita berdiri dan kita bermegah dalam pengharapan akan menerima kemuliaan Allah. Dan pengharapan tidak mengecewakan, karena kasih Allah telah dicurahkan di dalam hati kita oleh Roh Kudus yang telah dikaruniakan kepada kita. Karena waktu kita masih lemah, Kristus telah mati untuk kita orang-orang durhaka pada waktu yang ditentukan oleh Allah. Sebab tidak mudah seorang mau mati untuk orang yang benar — tetapi mungkin untuk orang yang baik ada orang yang berani mati. Akan tetapi Allah menunjukkan kasih-Nya kepada kita, oleh karena Kristus telah mati untuk kita, ketika kita masih berdosa.

Maka sampailah Ia ke sebuah kota di Samaria, yang bernama Sikhar dekat tanah yang diberikan Yakub dahulu kepada anaknya, Yusuf. Di situ terdapat sumur Yakub. Yesus sangat letih oleh perjalanan, karena itu Ia duduk di pinggir sumur itu. Hari kira-kira pukul dua belas. Maka datanglah seorang perempuan Samaria hendak menimba air. Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Berilah Aku minum." Sebab murid-murid-Nya telah pergi ke kota membeli makanan. Maka kata perempuan Samaria itu kepada-Nya: "Masakan Engkau, seorang Yahudi, minta minum kepadaku, seorang Samaria?" (Sebab orang Yahudi tidak bergaul dengan orang Samaria.) Jawab Yesus kepadanya: "Jikalau engkau tahu tentang karunia Allah dan siapakah Dia yang berkata kepadamu: Berilah Aku minum! niscaya engkau telah meminta kepada-Nya dan Ia telah memberikan kepadamu air hidup." Kata perempuan itu kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, Engkau tidak punya timba dan sumur ini amat dalam; dari manakah Engkau memperoleh air hidup itu? Adakah Engkau lebih besar dari pada bapa kami Yakub, yang memberikan sumur ini kepada kami dan yang telah minum sendiri dari dalamnya, ia serta anak-anaknya dan ternaknya?" Jawab Yesus kepadanya: "Barangsiapa minum air ini, ia akan haus lagi, tetapi barangsiapa minum air yang akan Kuberikan kepadanya, ia tidak akan haus untuk selama-lamanya. Sebaliknya air yang akan Kuberikan kepadanya, akan menjadi mata air di dalam dirinya, yang terus-menerus memancar sampai kepada hidup yang kekal." Kata perempuan itu kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, berikanlah aku air itu, supaya aku tidak haus dan tidak usah datang lagi ke sini untuk menimba air." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Pergilah, panggillah suamimu dan datang ke sini." Kata perempuan itu: "Aku tidak mempunyai suami." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Tepat katamu, bahwa engkau tidak mempunyai suami, sebab engkau sudah mempunyai lima suami dan yang ada sekarang padamu, bukanlah suamimu. Dalam hal ini engkau berkata benar." Kata perempuan itu kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, nyata sekarang padaku, bahwa Engkau seorang nabi. Nenek moyang kami menyembah di atas gunung ini, tetapi kamu katakan, bahwa Yerusalemlah tempat orang menyembah." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Percayalah kepada-Ku, hai perempuan, saatnya akan tiba, bahwa kamu akan menyembah Bapa bukan di gunung ini dan bukan juga di Yerusalem. Kamu menyembah apa yang tidak kamu kenal, kami menyembah apa yang kami kenal, sebab keselamatan datang dari bangsa Yahudi. Tetapi saatnya akan datang dan sudah tiba sekarang, bahwa penyembah-penyembah benar akan menyembah Bapa dalam roh dan kebenaran; sebab Bapa menghendaki penyembah-penyembah demikian. Allah itu Roh dan barangsiapa menyembah Dia, harus menyembah-Nya dalam roh dan kebenaran." Jawab perempuan itu kepada-Nya: "Aku tahu, bahwa Mesias akan datang, yang disebut juga Kristus; apabila Ia datang, Ia akan memberitakan segala sesuatu kepada kami." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Akulah Dia, yang sedang berkata-kata dengan engkau."
Pada waktu itu datanglah murid-murid-Nya dan mereka heran, bahwa Ia sedang bercakap-cakap dengan seorang perempuan. Tetapi tidak seorang pun yang berkata: "Apa yang Engkau kehendaki? Atau: Apa yang Engkau percakapkan dengan dia?" Maka perempuan itu meninggalkan tempayannya di situ lalu pergi ke kota dan berkata kepada orang-orang yang di situ: "Mari, lihat! Di sana ada seorang yang mengatakan kepadaku segala sesuatu yang telah kuperbuat. Mungkinkah Dia Kristus itu?" Maka mereka pun pergi ke luar kota lalu datang kepada Yesus. Sementara itu murid-murid-Nya mengajak Dia, katanya: "Rabi, makanlah." Akan tetapi Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Pada-Ku ada makanan yang tidak kamu kenal." Maka murid-murid itu berkata seorang kepada yang lain: "Adakah orang yang telah membawa sesuatu kepada-Nya untuk dimakan?" Kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Makanan-Ku ialah melakukan kehendak Dia yang mengutus Aku dan menyelesaikan pekerjaan-Nya. Bukankah kamu mengatakan: Empat bulan lagi tibalah musim menuai? Tetapi Aku berkata kepadamu: Lihatlah sekelilingmu dan pandanglah ladang-ladang yang sudah menguning dan matang untuk dituai. Sekarang juga penuai telah menerima upahnya dan ia mengumpulkan buah untuk hidup yang kekal, sehingga penabur dan penuai sama-sama bersukacita. Sebab dalam hal ini benarlah peribahasa: Yang seorang menabur dan yang lain menuai. Aku mengutus kamu untuk menuai apa yang tidak kamu usahakan; orang-orang lain berusaha dan kamu datang memetik hasil usaha mereka." Dan banyak orang Samaria dari kota itu telah menjadi percaya kepada-Nya karena perkataan perempuan itu, yang bersaksi: "Ia mengatakan kepadaku segala sesuatu yang telah kuperbuat." Ketika orang-orang Samaria itu sampai kepada Yesus, mereka meminta kepada-Nya, supaya Ia tinggal pada mereka; dan Ia pun tinggal di situ dua hari lamanya. Dan lebih banyak lagi orang yang menjadi percaya karena perkataan-Nya, dan mereka berkata kepada perempuan itu: "Kami percaya, tetapi bukan lagi karena apa yang kaukatakan, sebab kami sendiri telah mendengar Dia dan kami tahu, bahwa Dialah benar-benar Juruselamat dunia."

しかし、民は喉が渇いてしかたないので、モーセに向かって不平を述べた。「なぜ、我々をエジプトから導き上ったのか。わたしも子供たちも、家畜までも渇きで殺すためなのか。」モーセは主に、「わたしはこの民をどうすればよいのですか。彼らは今にも、わたしを石で打ち殺そうとしています」と叫ぶと、主はモーセに言われた。「イスラエルの長老数名を伴い、民の前を進め。また、ナイル川を打った杖を持って行くがよい。見よ、わたしはホレブの岩の上であなたの前に立つ。あなたはその岩を打て。そこから水が出て、民は飲むことができる。」モーセは、イスラエルの長老たちの目の前でそのとおりにした。彼は、その場所をマサ（試し）とメリバ（争い）と名付けた。イスラエルの人々が、「果たして、主は我々の間におられるのかどうか」と言って、モーセと争い、主を試したからである。

このように、わたしたちは信仰によって義とされたのだから、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって神との間に平和を得ており、このキリストのお陰で、今の恵みに信仰によって導き入れられ、神の栄光にあずかる希望を誇りにしています。希望はわたしたちを欺くことがありません。わたしたちに与えられた聖霊によって、神の愛がわたしたちの心に注がれているからです。実にキリストは、わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、定められた時に、不信心な者のために死んでくださった。正しい人のために死ぬ者はほとんどいません。善い人のために命を惜しまない者ならいるかもしれません。しかし、わたしたちがまだ罪人であったとき、キリストがわたしたちのために死んでくださったことにより、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されました。

この読み物はローマ人への手紙です。
ですから、信仰によって神の目に正しい者とされた私たちは、主イエス・キリストによって、神との間に平和を得ています。信仰のゆえに、キリストは私たちを、いま立っている、この最高の特権ある立場に導いてくださいました。そして私たちは、私たちに対する神の計画がすべて実現するのを、喜びをもって待ち望んでいるのです。この希望は失望に終わることはありません。それは、神が聖霊を与えてくださり、その聖霊が私たちの心に神の愛を満たしてくださっているからです。私たちが逃れる道もなく、行き詰まっていた時、キリストはおいでになり、何のとりえもない、私たち罪人のために死んでくださいました。たとえ私たちが良い人間であったとしても、だれかが自分のために死んでくれるなどとは考えてもみなかったでしょう。しかし、私たちがまだ罪人であった時、神はキリストを遣わしてくださいました。そのキリストが私たちのために死なれたことにより、神は私たちに大きな愛を示してくださったのです。

サマリヤのスカルという村にさしかかったのは、ちょうど正午ごろでした。そこに、昔ヤコブが息子ヨセフに与えた土地があり、ヤコブの井戸がありました。日がかんかんに照りつける長い道のりを歩いて来られたイエスは疲れて、井戸のそばに腰をおろしました。まもなくサマリヤ人の女が一人、水を汲みに来ました。イエスは、「すみませんが、水を一杯下さい」と声をおかけになりました。そのとき弟子たちは、村に食べ物を買いに行っており、ほかにはだれもいませんでした。女はびっくりして言いました。「まあ、あなたはユダヤ人ではありませんか。サマリヤ人の私に、どうして水をくれなどと頼むのですか。」当時、ユダヤ人はサマリヤ人を見下し、口をきこうとさえしなかったのです。「もし、神があなたにどんなにすばらしい贈り物を用意しておられるか、また、わたしがだれなのかを知っていれば、あなたのほうから、いのちの水を下さいと願ったでしょう。」「そんなこと言っても、あなたは水を汲むおけも綱も持っていないのですよ。この井戸はとても深いのです。そのいのちの水を、いったいどこから汲むのですか。あなたは、私たちの先祖ヤコブ様よりも偉いと言うのですか。ヤコブ様はこの井戸を私たちにくれました。ヤコブ様も、その子孫も家畜もみんな、この井戸の水を喜んで飲んだのです。これより良い水をくれると言うのですか。」イエスは言われました。「この水を飲んでも、すぐにまた、のどが渇きます。けれども、わたしがあげる水を飲めば、絶対に渇くことはありません。わたしがあげる水は、それを飲む人のうちで永久にかれない泉となり、いつまでもその人を永遠のいのちで潤すのです。」「先生。そのような水があるなら、私に下さい。そうすればのども渇かないし、毎日こんな遠くまで歩いて、水汲みに来なくてすむもの。」「帰って、夫を連れて来なさい。」「……。私、結婚なんかしていません。」「そうですね。あなたは五回も結婚したけれど、今いっしょに暮らしている男は、確かに夫ではありません。」「先生。あなたは預言者でしょう。だったら教えてください。ユダヤ人は、礼拝の場所はエルサレムだけだと言いはるし、サマリヤ人は、私たちの先祖が礼拝したこのゲリジム山だと言っています。どうしてなのですか？」「いいですか。父なる神を礼拝する場所は、この山か、それともエルサレムかなどと、こだわる必要のない時が来ます。大切なのは、どこで礼拝するかではありません。どのように礼拝するかです。霊的な、真心からの礼拝をしているかどうかが問題なのです。神は霊なるお方ですから、正しい礼拝をするには、聖霊の助けが必要です。神はそのような礼拝をしてほしいのです。あなたがたサマリヤ人は、神のことはほとんど何も知らないで礼拝していますが、私たちユダヤ人はよく知っています。救いはユダヤ人を通してこの世に来るのですから。」「私は、キリストと呼ばれるメシヤがおいでになることだけは知っています。その方がおいでになれば、いっさいのことを説明してくださるのでしょう。」「わたしがそのメシヤです。」ちょうどその時、弟子たちが戻って来ました。驚いたことに、イエスが女と話しておられるではありませんか。しかし、どうしてなのか、何を話しているのか尋ねた者はいませんでした。女は水がめを井戸のそばに置いたまま村に帰り、会う人ごとに話しかけました。「ねえ、来て、会ってごらんよ。私のしてきたことを、何もかも言い当てた方がいらっしゃるの。あの方こそキリスト（救い主）に違いないよ。」この誘いに村人たちは、イエスに会おうと、ぞくぞくと押しかけました。そのころ、弟子たちはイエスに、「先生。どうぞお食事を」と勧めましたが、イエスは、「いや、けっこうです。わたしには、あなたがたの知らない食べ物があるのです」と言われました。弟子たちはけげんそうに、「だれかが食べ物を持って来たんだろうか」と口々に言いました。そこでイエスは説明なさいました。「いいですか、わたしの言う食べ物とは、わたしを遣わされた神のお心にかなうことをし、神の仕事をやり遂げることなのです。あなたがたは、『刈り入れはまだ四か月も先のこと、夏も終わりにならなければ始まらない』と思っているようですね。だが、回りをよく見なさい。人のたましいの畑は広々と一面に実り、刈り入れを待つばかりです。やがて、刈り入れをする人たちはたくさんの報酬をもらい、永遠のいのちに入るたましいを天の倉に納めます。その時、種をまいた者も、刈り入れをした者も共々に、大いに喜ぶのです。『一人が種をまき、ほかの人が刈り入れる』ということわざのとおりにです。あなたがたが自分で種まきをしなかった畑に、わたしはあなたがたを遣わしました。ほかの人々が苦労して育てたものを、あなたがたが刈り入れるのです。」スカルの村から押しかけたサマリヤ人の多くは、例の女が、「あの方は、私のしてきたことを何もかも言い当てた」と言うのを聞いて、イエスをメシヤと信じました。彼らは井戸のところに来てイエスにお会いすると、村に滞在してくださいと頼みました。そこでイエスは、二日間滞在しました。その間に、さらに多くの人がイエスのことばを聞いて信じました。人々は女に、「もう私たちは、あなたが話してくれたことを聞いたから信じているのではない。この方が言われることを、じかに聞いたからだ。この方こそ、ほんとうに世の救い主だ」と言いました。
