Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. “My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.”
Second reading (1 Peter 1: 17–21)

Beloved: If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb. He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you, who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

Peter stood up with the Eleven and, with a loud voice, addressed them, "Fellow Jews and all foreigners now staying in Jerusalem, listen to what I have to say. Fellow Israelites, listen to what I am going to tell about Jesus of Nazareth. God accredited him and through him did powerful deeds and wonders and signs in your midst, as you well know. You delivered him to sinners to be crucified and killed, and in this way the purpose of God from all times was fulfilled. But God raised him to life and released him from the pain of death, because it was impossible for him to be held in the power of death. David spoke of him when he stated: I saw the Lord before me at all times; he is by my side, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; my body too will live in hope. Because you will not forsake me in the abode of the dead, nor allow your Holy One to experience corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life, and your presence will fill me with joy.Friends, I do not need to prove that the patriarch David died and was buried; his tomb is with us to this day. But he knew that God had sworn to him that one of his descendants would sit upon the throne and, as he was a prophet, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah. So he stated that he would not be left in the region of the dead, nor would his body experience corruption. This Messiah is Jesus and we are all witnesses that God raised him to life. He has been exalted at God's right side and the Father has entrusted the Holy Spirit to him; this Spirit he has just poured upon us as you now see and hear.
Second reading (1 Peter 1: 17–21)

Brothers and sisters: You call upon a Father who makes no distinction between persons but judges according to each one's deeds; take seriously, then, these years which you spend in a strange land. Remember that you were freed from the useless way of life of your ancestors, not with gold and silver but with the precious blood of the Lamb without spot of blemish. God, who has known Christ before the world began, revealed him to you in the last days. Through him, you have faith in God who raised him from the dead and glorified him in order that you might put all your faith and hope in God.

Some friends of our group went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had stated, but they did not see him." He stated to them, "How dull you are, how slow of understanding! You fail to believe the message of the prophets. It is written that the Christ should suffer all this and then enter his glory?" Then starting with Moses and going through the prophets, he explained to them everything in the Scriptures concerning himself. As they drew near the village they were heading for, Jesus made as if to go farther. But they prevailed upon him, "Stay with us, for night comes quickly. The day is now almost over." So he went in to stay with them. When they were at table, he took the bread, stated a blessing, broke it and gave each a piece. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but he vanished out of sight. And they stated to each other, "Were not our hearts filled with ardent yearning when he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures?" They immediately set out and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together. They were greeted by these words: "Yes, it is true, the Lord is risen! He has appeared to Simon!" Then the two told what had happened on the road and how Jesus made himself known when he broke bread with them.

Segunda lectura (1 Pedro 1: 17–21)
Una lectura de la primera carta de San Pedro.
El Padre que invocan no hace diferencias entre personas, sino que juzga a cada uno según sus obras; tomen, pues, en serio estos años en que viven fuera de la patria. No olviden que han sido rescatados de la vida vacía que aprendieron de sus padres; pero no con un rescate material de oro o plata, sino con la sangre preciosa de Cristo, el Cordero sin mancha ni defecto. Dios pensaba en él desde antes de la creación del mundo, pero no fue revelado sino a ustedes al final de los tiempos. Gracias a él han creído en Dios que lo resucitó de entre los muertos y lo glorificó, precisamente con el fin de que pusieran su fe y su esperanza en Dios.

Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús en persona se les acercó y se puso a caminar con ellos, pero algo impedía que sus ojos lo reconocieran. Él les dijo: “¿De qué van discutiendo por el camino?” Se detuvieron, y parecían muy desanimados. Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le contestó: “¿Cómo? ¿Eres tú el único peregrino en Jerusalén que no está enterado de lo que ha pasado aquí estos días?” “¿Qué pasó?”, les preguntó. Le contestaron: “¡Todo el asunto de Jesús Nazareno!” Era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, reconocido por Dios y por todo el pueblo. Pero nuestros sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes renegaron de él, lo hicieron condenar a muerte y clavar en la cruz. Nosotros pensábamos que él sería el que debía libertar a Israel. Sea lo que sea, ya van dos días desde que sucedieron estas cosas. En realidad, algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han inquietado, pues fueron muy de mañana al sepulcro y, al no hallar su cuerpo, volvieron hablando de una aparición de ángeles que decían que estaba vivo. Algunos de los nuestros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo tal como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a él no lo vieron.” Entonces él les dijo: “¡Qué poco entienden ustedes y qué lentos son sus corazones para creer todo lo que anunciaron los profetas! ¿No tenía que ser así y que el Mesías padeciera para entrar en su gloria?” Y les interpretó lo que se decía de él en todas las Escrituras, comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo por los profetas. Al llegar cerca del pueblo al que iban, hizo como que quisiera seguir adelante, pero ellos le insistieron diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, ya está cayendo la tarde y se termina el día.” Entró, pues, para quedarse con ellos. Y mientras estaba en la mesa con ellos, tomó el pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. En ese momento se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él desapareció. Entonces se dijeron el uno al otro: “¿No sentíamos arder nuestro corazón cuando nos hablaba en el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras?” De inmediato se levantaron y volvieron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once y a los de su grupo. Walang kinikilingan ang Diyos. Hinahatulan niya ang mga tao ayon sa mga ginawa nila. At dahil tinatawag ninyo siyang Ama, mamuhay kayong may takot sa kanya habang kayo'y nasa mundong ito. Alam ninyo kung ano ang ipinantubos sa inyo sa walang kabuluhang pamumuhay na inyong minana sa inyong mga magulang. Tinubos kayo hindi sa pamamagitan ng mga bagay na nasisira, tulad ng ginto o pilak, kundi sa pamamagitan ng mahalagang dugo ni Cristo. Siya'y tulad ng korderong walang dungis at kapintasan. Itinalaga siya ng Diyos bago pa nilikha ang daigdig, at alang-alang sa inyo ay ipinahayag sa mga huling araw na ito. Dahil kay Cristo, sumasampalataya kayo sa Diyos na sa kanya'y muling bumuhay at nagparangal, kaya't ang inyong pananampalataya at pag-asa ay nasa Diyos.

Sumagot sila, “Tungkol kay Jesus na taga-Nazaret, isang propetang makapangyarihan sa salita at gawa maging sa harap ng Diyos at ng mga tao. Isinakdal siya ng aming mga punong pari at mga pinuno ng bayan upang mahatulang mamatay, at siya'y ipinako sa krus. Siya pa naman ang inaasahan naming magpapalaya sa Israel. Hindi lamang iyan. Ikatlong araw na ngayon mula nang mangyari ito. Nabigla kami sa ibinalita ng ilan sa mga babaing kasamahan namin. Maagang-maaga raw silang nagpunta sa libingan at hindi nila natagpuan ang kanyang bangkay. Nagbalik sila at ang sabi'y nakakita raw sila ng isang pangitain, mga anghel na nagsabing si Jesus ay buháy. Pumunta rin sa libingan ang ilan sa mga kasama namin at ganoon nga ang natagpuan nila, ngunit hindi nila nakita si Jesus.” Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, “Kay hahangal ninyo! Kay kukupad ninyong maniwala sa lahat ng sinasabi ng mga propeta! Hindi ba't kailangang ang Cristo ay magtiis ng lahat ng ito bago siya pumasok sa kanyang kaluwalhatian?” At ipinaliwanag sa kanila ni Jesus ang lahat ng sinasabi sa Kasulatan tungkol sa kanya, simula sa mga aklat ni Moises hanggang sa mga sinulat ng mga propeta. Malapit na sila sa nayong kanilang pupuntahan at si Jesus ay parang magpapatuloy pa sa paglakad, ngunit siya'y pinigil nila. “Tumuloy ka muna rito sa amin. Palubog na ang araw at dumidilim na,” sabi nila. Kaya't sumama nga siya sa kanila. Nang siya'y kasalo na nila sa pagkain, dumampot siya ng tinapay at nagpasalamat sa Diyos; pagkatapos, pinagpira-piraso iyon at ibinigay sa kanila. Noon nabuksan ang kanilang mga mata at nakilala nila si Jesus, subalit siya'y biglang nawala sa kanilang paningin. Nasabi nila sa isa't isa, “Kaya pala nag-aalab ang ating puso habang tayo'y kinakausap niya sa daan at ipinapaliwanag sa atin ang mga Kasulatan!” Agad silang tumayo at nagbalik sa Jerusalem. Naratnan nilang nagkakatipon doon ang labing-isa at ang ibang kasamahan nila. Sinabi ng mga ito sa dalawa, “Totoo nga palang muling nabuhay ang Panginoon! Nagpakita siya kay Simon!” At isinalaysay naman ng dalawa ang nangyari sa daan at kung paano nila nakilala si Jesus nang paghati-hatiin nito ang tinapay.

Maka bangkitlah Petrus berdiri dengan kesebelas rasul itu, dan dengan suara nyaring ia berkata kepada mereka: Hai orang-orang Israel, dengarlah perkataan ini: Yang aku maksudkan, ialah Yesus dari Nazaret, seorang yang telah ditentukan Allah dan yang dinyatakan kepadamu dengan kekuatan-kekuatan dan mujizat-mujizat dan tanda-tanda yang dilakukan oleh Allah dengan perantaraan Dia di tengah-tengah kamu, seperti yang kamu tahu. Dia yang diserahkan Allah menurut maksud dan rencana-Nya, telah kamu salibkan dan kamu bunuh oleh tangan bangsa-bangsa durhaka. Tetapi Allah membangkitkan Dia dengan melepaskan Dia dari sengsara maut, karena tidak mungkin Ia tetap berada dalam kuasa maut itu. Sebab Daud berkata tentang Dia: Aku senantiasa memandang kepada Tuhan, karena Ia berdiri di sebelah kananku, aku tidak goyah. Sebab itu hatiku bersukacita dan jiwaku bersorak-sorak, bahkan tubuhku akan diam dengan tenteram, sebab Engkau tidak menyerahkan aku kepada dunia orang mati, dan tidak membiarkan Orang Kudus-Mu melihat kebinasaan. Engkau memberitahukan kepadaku jalan kehidupan; Engkau akan melimpahi aku dengan sukacita di hadapan-Mu. Saudara-saudara, aku boleh berkata-kata dengan terus terang kepadamu tentang Daud, bapa bangsa kita. Ia telah mati dan dikubur, dan kuburannya masih ada pada kita sampai hari ini. Tetapi ia adalah seorang nabi dan ia tahu, bahwa Allah telah berjanji kepadanya dengan mengangkat sumpah, bahwa Ia akan mendudukkan seorang dari keturunan Daud sendiri di atas takhtanya. Karena itu ia telah melihat ke depan dan telah berbicara tentang kebangkitan Mesias, ketika ia mengatakan, bahwa Dia tidak ditinggalkan di dalam dunia orang mati, dan bahwa daging-Nya tidak mengalami kebinasaan. — Jagalah aku, ya Allah, sebab pada-Mu aku berlindung. Aku berkata kepada TUHAN: "Engkaulah Tuhanku, tidak ada yang baik bagiku selain Engkau!" Ya TUHAN, Engkaulah bagian warisanku dan pialaku, Engkau sendirilah yang meneguhkan bagian yang diundikan kepadaku.

Bacaan kedua (1 Petrus 1: 17–21)

Dan jika kamu menyebut-Nya Bapa, yaitu Dia yang tanpa memandang muka menghakimi semua orang menurut perbuatannya, maka hendaklah kamu hidup dalam ketakutan selama kamu menumpang di dunia ini. Sebab kamu tahu, bahwa kamu telah ditebus dari cara hidupmu yang sia-sia yang kamu warisi dari nenek moyangmu itu bukan dengan barang yang fana, bukan pula dengan perak atau emas, melainkan dengan darah yang mahal, yaitu darah Kristus yang sama seperti darah anak domba yang tak bernoda dan tak bercacat. Ia telah dipilih sebelum dunia dijadikan, tetapi karena kamu baru menyatakan diri-Nya pada zaman akhir. Oleh Dialah kamu percaya kepada Allah, yang telah membangkitkan Dia dari antara orang mati dan yang telah memuliakan-Nya, sehingga imanmu dan pengharapanmu tertuju kepada Allah.

Pada hari itu juga dua orang dari murid-murid Yesus pergi ke sebuah kampung bernama Emaus, yang terletak kira-kira tujuh mil jauhnya dari Yerusalem, dan mereka bercakap-cakap tentang segala sesuatu yang telah terjadi. Ketika mereka sedang bercakap-cakap dan bertukar pikiran, datanglah Yesus sendiri mendekati mereka, lalu berjalan bersama-sama dengan mereka. Tetapi ada sesuatu yang menghalangi mata mereka, sehingga mereka tidak dapat mengenal Dia. Yesus berkata kepada mereka: "Apakah yang kamu percakapkan sementara kamu berjalan?" Maka berhentilah mereka dengan muka muram. Seorang dari mereka, namanya Kleopas, menjawab-Nya: "Adakah Engkau satu-satunya orang asing di Yerusalem, yang tidak tahu apa yang terjadi di situ pada hari-hari belakangan ini?" Kata-Nya kepada mereka: "Apakah itu?" Jawab mereka: "Apa yang terjadi dengan Yesus orang Nazaret. Dia adalah seorang nabi, yang berkuasa dalam pekerjaan dan perkataan di hadapan Allah dan di depan seluruh bangsa kami. Tetapi imam-imam kepala dan pemimpin-pemimpin kami telah menyerahkan Dia untuk dihukum mati dan mereka telah menyalibkan-Nya. Padahal kami dahulu mengharapkan, bahwa Dialah yang datang untuk membebaskan bangsa Israel. Tetapi sementara itu telah lewat tiga hari, sejak semuanya itu terjadi. Tetapi beberapa perempuan dari kalangan kami telah mengejutkan kami: Pagi-pagi buta mereka telah pergi ke kubur, dan tidak menemukan mayat-Nya. Lalu mereka datang dengan berita, bahwa telah kelihatan kepada mereka malaikat-malaikat, yang mengatakan, bahwa Ia hidup. Dan beberapa teman kami telah pergi ke kubur itu dan mendapati, bahwa memang benar yang dikatakan perempuan-perempuan itu, tetapi Dia tidak mereka lihat." Lalu Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Hai kamu orang bodoh, betapa lambannya hatimu, sehingga kamu tidak percaya segala sesuatu, yang telah dikatakan para nabi! Bukankah Mesias harus menderita semuanya itu untuk masuk ke dalam kemuliaan-Nya?" Lalu Ia menjelaskan kepada mereka apa yang tertulis tentang Dia dalam seluruh Kitab Suci, mulai dari kitab-kitab Musa dan segala kitab nabi-nabi. Mereka mendekati kampung yang mereka tuju, lalu Ia berbuat seolah-olah hendak meneruskan perjalanan-Nya. Tetapi mereka sangat mendesak-Nya, katanya: "Tinggallah bersama-sama dengan kami, sebab hari telah menjelang malam dan matahari hampir terbenam." Lalu masuklah Ia untuk tinggal bersama-sama dengan mereka. Waktu Ia duduk makan dengan mereka, Ia mengambil roti, mengucap berkat, lalu memecah-mecahkannya dan memberikannya kepada mereka. Ketika itu terbukalah mata mereka dan merekapun mengenal Dia, tetapi Ia lenyap dari tengah-tengah mereka. Kata mereka seorang kepada yang lain: "Bukankah hati kita berkobar-kobar, ketika Ia berbicara dengan kita di tengah jalan dan ketika Ia menerangkan Kitab Suci kepada kita?" Lalu bangunlah mereka dan terus kembali ke Yerusalem. Di situ mereka mendapati kesebelas murid itu. Mereka sedang berkumpul bersama-sama dengan teman-teman mereka. Kata mereka itu: "Sesungguhnya Tuhan telah bangkit dan telah menampakkan diri kepada Simon." Lalu kedua orang itupun menceriterakan apa yang terjadi di tengah jalan dan bagaimana mereka mengenal Dia pada waktu Ia memecah-mecahkan roti.

するとペテロが、十一人の使徒と共につかつかと進み出て、声を張り上げ、人々に語りかけました。「よそから来られた方も、エルサレムに住んでおられる皆さんも、どうぞお聞きください。ああ、皆さん。これから申し上げることを聞いてください。よくご存じのように、ナザレのイエスは、あなたがたの前で、力ある奇跡を行われました。神様はそれによって、だれにもはっきりわかるように、イエス様の身元を保証なさったのです。神様はあらかじめ計画したとおり、この方を、あなたがたの手でローマ政府に引き渡し、十字架で処刑することをお許しになりました。そうした上で、この方を死の苦しみから解放し、復活させたのです。この方が、ずっと死んだままでいることなど、ありえないことだからです。ダビデ王は、イエス様のことをこう言っています。『主はいつも私と共におられる。主が私を助け、神の大きな力が私を支える。だから、心は喜びにあふれ、私の舌は主を褒めたたえる。たとい死んでも、私には望みがある。あなたは、私の魂を地獄に放置せず、あなたの聖なる息子の体を、朽ち果てさせることもない。私を生き返らせ、あなたの前で、すばらしい喜びにあふれさせる。』愛する皆さん。考えてください。ダビデはここで、自分のことを語っているわけではありません。そうでしょう。ダビデは死んで葬られ、その墓は今でも、ちゃんと残っているではありませんか。しかし、彼は預言者でしたから、自分の子孫の一人がメシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）となり、ダビデの王座につくと神が誓われたことを知っていたのです。それで、遠い将来を望み見ながら、メシヤの復活を預言しました。メシヤの魂は地獄に放置されず、その体が朽ち果てることもない、と語ったのです。そのとおり、神様はイエスを復活させました。私たちはみな、そのことの証人です。いまイエス様は、天で最も栄誉ある神の右の座についておられます。そして、約束どおり、父なる神は聖霊を送ってくださいました。その結果、たった今、あなたがたが見聞きしたことが起こったのです。

あなたがたが祈りをささげる天の父なる神は、人の行いをすべて、正しく公平にさばかれます。ですから天に行くその日まで、主を恐れ、慎み深く生活しなさい。神は、あなたがたの先祖が天国への道を外れ、むなしい努力を重ねてきた生き方からあなたがたを救い出すために、身の代金を払ってくださいました。それは、金や銀のような朽ちる物ではなく、一点の罪もしみもない神の小羊、キリストの尊い血によって支払われたのです。神はこのために、世の始まる前から、キリストを選んでおられました。そしてこの終わりの時代に、あなたがたへの祝福として、キリストを遣わされたのです。ですから、キリストを死から復活させ、栄光をお与えになった神を信じましょう。あなたがたの信仰と希望とは神にかかっているのです。

この同じ日曜日のことです。二人の弟子が、エルサレムから十一キロほど離れたエマオという村へ急いでいました。二人が道々話し合っていたのは、イエスの死のことでした。そこへ突然、当のイエスが近づき、彼らと連れ立って歩き始めました。しかし二人には、イエスだとはわかりません。神がそうなさったのです。イエスが尋ねました。「何やら熱心にお話しのようですね。いったい何がそんなに問題なのですか。」すると二人は、急に顔をくもらせ、思わず足を止めました。クレオパというほうの弟子があきれたように、「エルサレムにいながら、先週起こった、あの恐ろしい出来事を知らないとは。そんな人は、あなたぐらいのものでしょう」と言いました。「どんなことでしょうか？」「ナザレ出身のイエス様のことをご存じないのですか。この方は、信じられないような奇跡を幾つもなさった預言者で、すばらしい教師でもあったのです。神からも人からも重んじられていたのですが、祭司長やほかの宗教的指導者たちは、理不尽にもこの方をつかまえて、ローマ政府に引き渡し、十字架につけてしまったのです。私たちは、この方こそ栄光に輝くメシヤで、イスラエルを救うために来られたに違いないと考えていたのですが。ところが、話はそれで終わらないのです。弟子仲間の女たちが、なんとも奇妙なことを言いだしたのです。処刑があった日から、今日で三日目になりますが、今朝がた早く、その女たちが墓へ行ったところ、イエス様のお体は影も形もなかったというではありませんか。しかもその場に天使が現れて、イエス様は生きておられると語ったとか……。その話を聞いて、仲間のある者たちが墓へ駆けつけて確認したのですが、彼らも口をそろえて、墓は空っぽだったと証言しているのです。」「ああ、どうしてそんなに、心が鈍いのですか。預言者たちが聖書に書いていることを信じられないのですか。キリストは栄光の時を迎える前に、必ずこのような苦しみを受けるはずだと、預言者たちははっきり語ったではありませんか。」それからイエスは、創世記から始めて、聖書（旧約）全体にわたって次々と預言者のことばを引用しては、救い主についての教えを説き明かされました。そうこうするうち、エマオに近づきましたが、イエスはまだ旅を続ける様子です。二人は、じきに暗くなるから、今晩はここでいっしょに泊まってくださいと熱心に頼みました。それでイエスもいっしょに家に入りました。食卓に着くと、イエスはパンを取り、神に祝福を祈り求め、ちぎって二人に渡しました。その瞬間、二人の目が開かれ、その人がイエスだとわかりました。と同時に、イエスの姿はかき消すように見えなくなりました。二人はあっけにとられながらも、「そう言えば、あの方が歩きながら語りかけてくださった時も、聖書のことばを説明してくださった時も、不思議なほど私たちの心が燃えていたではないか」と語り合いました。そして、すぐエルサレムへ取って返しました。戻ってみると、十一人の弟子たちやほかの弟子たちが迎え、「主は、ほんとうに復活された。ペテロがお会いしたのだからまちがいない」と話していました。そこで二人も、エマオへ行く途中イエスと出会ったことや、パンをちぎられた時にはっきりイエスだとわかったことなどを話しました。
