First reading (Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
See, my servant shall prosper, he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him so marred was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man so shall he startle many nations, because of him kings shall stand speechless; for those who have not been told shall see, those who have not heard shall ponder it. Who would believe what we have heard? To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him, like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him, nor appearance that would attract us to him. He was spurned and avoided by people, a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom people hide their faces, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all. Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth. Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away, and who would have thought any more of his destiny? When he was cut off from the land of the living, and smitten for the sin of his people, a grave was assigned him among the wicked and a burial place with evildoers, though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood. But the LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him. Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear. Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; and he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses.

Second reading (Hebrews 4: 14–16; 5: 7–9)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
Brothers and sisters: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. In the days when Christ was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

Jesus is Arrested
Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them, “Whom are you looking for?” They answered him, “Jesus the Nazorean.” He said to them, “I AM.” Judas his betrayer was also with them. When he said to them, “I AM,” they turned away and fell to the ground. So he again asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus the Nazorean.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill what he had said, “I have not lost any of those you gave me.” Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?” So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him, and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.
Peter’s First Denial
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus. But Peter stood at the gate outside. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in. Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, “You are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made, because it was cold, and were warming themselves. Peter was also standing there keeping warm.
The Inquiry Before Annas
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine. Jesus answered him, “I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing. Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. They know what I said.” When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s Further Denials
Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?” Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed.
Jesus Before Pilate
Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover. So Pilate came out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man?” They answered and said to him, “If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” At this, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” The Jews answered him, “We do not have the right to execute anyone,” in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die. So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?” Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this, I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
Barabbas Chosen Over Jesus
When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this one but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
Jesus is Scourged
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak, and they came to him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly. Once more Pilate went out and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, “Behold, the man!” When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him. I find no guilt in him.” The Jews answered, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”
Pilate Asks Further Questions of Jesus
Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid, and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” Jesus did not answer him. So Pilate said to him, “Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out, “If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”
Jesus Again Presented to the People
When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out and seated him on the judge’s bench in the place called Stone Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha. It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your king!” They cried out, “Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
Jesus Sent to be Crucified
So they took Jesus, and, carrying the cross himself, he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews.” Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews’.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
Jesus is Crucified
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier. They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down. So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be,” in order that the passage of Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. This is what the soldiers did. Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Jesus Dies on the Cross
After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
The Blood and Water
Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may come to believe. For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled: Not a bone of it will be broken. And again another passage says: They will look upon him whom they have pierced.
The Burial of Jesus
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body. Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.

He does not look like one," so will nations be astounded, kings will stand speechless, for they will see something never told, they will witness something never heard of. Who could believe what we have heard, and to whom has the Lord revealed his feat? Like a root out of dry ground, like a sapling he grew up before us, with nothing attractive in his appearance, no beauty, no majesty. He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows familiar with grief, a man from whom people conceal their face, spurned and considered of no account. Yet ours were the sorrows he bore, ours were the sufferings he endured, although we considered him as one punished by God, stricken and brought low. Destroyed because of our sins, he was crushed for our wickedness. Through his punishment we are made whole; by his wounds we are healed. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with grief, when he makes himself an offering for sin, he will have a long life and see his descendants. Through him the will of the Lord is done. For the anguish he suffered, he will see the light and obtain perfect knowledge. My just servant will justify the multitude; he will bear and take away their guilt. Therefore, I will give him his portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong. For he surrendered himself to death and was even counted among the wicked, bearing the sins of the multitude and interceding for sinners.

We have a great High Priest, Jesus, who is the Son of God, who has entered heaven. Let us, then, hold fast to the faith we profess. Our high priest is not indifferent to our weaknesses, for he was tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sinning. Let us, then, with confidence approach God, the giver of grace; we will obtain mercy and, through his favor, help in due time. Christ, in the days of his mortal life, offered his sacrifice with tears and cries. He prayed to him who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his humble submission. Although he was the Son of God, he learned through suffering what obedience was, and once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for those who obey him.

Jesus is Arrested

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place since Jesus had often met there with his disciples. He led soldiers of the Roman battalion and guards from the chief priests and Pharisees, who went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus knew all that was going to happen to him; he stepped forward and asked, "Who are you looking for?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene." Jesus replied, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, stood there with them. When Jesus replied, "I am he," they moved back and fell to the ground. Therefore, Jesus asked for a second time, "Who are you looking for?" and they answered, "Jesus the Nazarene." Jesus replied, "I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these others go." So what Jesus had stated came true: "I have not lost one of those you gave me." Simon Peter possessed a sword. He drew it and struck Malchus, the High Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. However, Jesus stated to Peter, "Put the sword back in its scabbard; shall I not drink the cup on which the Father had given me?" The guards and the soldiers, with their commander, seized Jesus and bound him. They took Jesus first to Annas. Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the High Priest that year; and it was Caiaphas who had told the Jews: "It is better that one man should die for the people."

Jesus replied to him, "If I have spoken incorrectly, then point it out. But if I have spoken correctly, why then do you have to strike me?" Then Annas sent Jesus, bound, to Caiaphas, the High Priest.
Peter's Further Denials
Now Simon Peter stood there warming himself. They stated to him, "Surely, you also are one of his disciples." Peter denied it. "I am not." One of the High Priest's servants, a kinsman of the one those whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Did I not see you with him in the garden?" Again Peter denied it, and at once the cock crowed.
Jesus Before Pilate
Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the court of the Roman governor. It was now morning. The Jews did not enter lest they were made unclean (by coming into the house of the pagan) and be unable to eat the Passover meal. So Pilate went out and asked, "What charge do you bring against this man?" They answered, "If he were not a criminal, we would not be handing him over to you." Pilate replied, "Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law." But they replied, "We ourselves are not allowed to put anyone to death." It was clear from this what kind of death Jesus was to die, according to what Jesus himself had foretold.
Pilate Questions About Jesus
Pilate then entered the court again, called Jesus and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "Does this word come from your own accord, or did you hear it from others?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus replied, "My kingship does not belong to this world. If I were a king like those of this world, my guards would have fought to save me from being handed over to the Jews. But my kingship is not from here." Pilate asked him, "So are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "Just as you say, I am a king. For this I was born and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth hears my voice." Pilate asked, "What is truth?"

Pilate then went out to the Jews again and said, "I find no crime in this man. Now, according to the custom, I must release a prisoner of yours at the Passover. With your agreement I will release for you the King of the Jews." But they insisted and cried out, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
Jesus is Scourged
Then Pilate had Jesus taken away and scourged. The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown and placed it on Jesus' head. They additionally threw a cloak of royal purple around his shoulders. They began coming to him and saluting him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and they slapped him on the face. Pilate then went outside yet another time and created another attempt to free Jesus. "Look, I am bringing him out and I want you to know that I find to crime in him." Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. As Jesus exits, Pilate pointed to him saying, "Here is the man!" When the guards and the chief priests saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate replied, "Take him yourselves and have him crucified, for I find no case against him." The Jews then replied, "We have a Law, and according to that law, this man ought to die because he made himself Son of God."

The chief priests said to Pilate, "Do not write: 'The King of the Jews'; but: 'This man claimed to be the King of the Jews.'" Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each of them. But as the tunic was woven in one piece from top to bottom, they said, "Let us not tear it, but let's cast lots for it to determine who will get it." This fulfilled the words of the Scripture: They divided my clothing among them; they cast lots for my garment. This is what the soldiers did.

The Burial of Jesus

As the tomb was very near, they buried Jesus there because they had no time left before the Jewish Preparation Day.

    Ahora llega para mi servidor la hora del éxito; será exaltado, y puesto en lo más alto. Así como muchos quedaron espantados al verlo, pues estaba tan desfigurado, que ya no parecía un ser humano así también todas las naciones se asombrarán, y los reyes quedarán sin palabras al ver lo sucedido, pues verán lo que no se les había contado y descubrirán cosas que nunca se habían oído. ¿Quién podrá creer la noticia que recibimos? Y la obra mayor de Yahvé, ¿a quién se la reveló? Este ha crecido ante Dios como un retoño, como raíz en tierra seca. No tenía brillo ni belleza para que nos fijáramos en él, y su apariencia no era como para cautivarnos. Despreciado por los hombres y marginado, hombre de dolores y familiarizado con el sufrimiento, semejante a aquellos a los que se les vuelve la cara, no contaba para nada y no hemos hecho caso de él. Sin embargo, eran nuestras dolencias las que él llevaba, eran nuestros dolores los que le pesaban. Nosotros lo creíamos azotado por Dios, castigado y humillado, y eran nuestras faltas por las que era destruido nuestros pecados, por los que era aplastado. Él soportó el castigo que nos trae la paz y por sus llagas hemos sido sanados. Todos andábamos como ovejas errantes, cada cual seguía su propio camino, y Yahvé descargó sobre él la culpa de todos nosotros. Fue maltratado y él se humilló y no dijo nada, fue llevado cual cordero al matadero, como una oveja que permanece muda cuando la esquilan. Fue detenido, enjuiciado y eliminado ¿y quién ha pensado en su suerte? Pues ha sido arrancado del mundo de los vivos y herido de muerte por los crímenes de su pueblo. Fue sepultado junto a los malhechores y su tumba quedó junto a los ricos, a pesar de que nunca cometió una violencia ni nunca salió una mentira de su boca. Quiso Yahvé destrozarlo con padecimientos, y él ofreció su vida como sacrificio por el pecado. Por esto verá a sus descendientes y tendrá larga vida, y el proyecto de Dios prosperará en sus manos. Después de las amarguras que haya padecido su alma, gozará del pleno conocimiento. El Justo, mi servidor, hará una multitud de justos, después de cargar con sus deudas. Por eso, le daré en herencia muchedumbres y lo contaré entre los grandes, porque se ha negado a sí mismo hasta la muerte y ha sido contado entre los pecadores, cuando llevaba sobre sí los pecados de muchos e intercedía por los pecadores.

    Tenemos, pues, un sumo sacerdote excepcional, que ha entrado en el mismo cielo, Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. Esto es suficiente para que nos mantengamos firmes en la fe que profesamos. Nuestro sumo sacerdote no se queda indiferente ante nuestras debilidades, pues ha sido probado en todo igual que nosotros, a excepción del pecado. Por lo tanto, acerquémonos con plena confianza a la sede de la gracia, a fin de obtener misericordia y hallar la gracia del auxilio oportuno.

    Una lectura de la Pasión de nuestro Señor Jesucristo según San Juan.

    Parte 1 – El Arresto de Jesús
    Después de haber dicho esto, Jesús fue con sus discípulos al otro lado del torrente Cedrón. Había en ese lugar una huerta y allí entró con ellos. Judas, el traidor, también conocía el lugar porque Jesús y sus discípulos se reunían allí con frecuencia. Entonces Judas, al frente de un destacamento de soldados y de los guardias designados por los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos, llegó allí con faroles, antorchas y armas. Jesús, sabiendo todo lo que le iba a suceder, se adelantó y les preguntó: “¿A quién buscan?” A Jesús, el Nazareno. Él les dijo: “Soy yo.” Judas el que lo entregaba estaba con ellos. Cuando Jesús les dijo: “Soy yo”, ellos retrocedieron y cayeron en tierra. Les preguntó nuevamente: “¿A quién buscan?” Le dijeron: “A Jesús, el Nazareno.” Jesús repitió: “Ya les dije que soy yo. Si es a mí a quien buscan, dejan que estos se vayan.” Así debía cumplirse la palabra que él había dicho: “No he perdido a ninguno de los que me confiaste.” Entonces Simón Pedro, que llevaba una espada, la sacó e hirió al servidor del Sumo Sacerdote, cortándole la oreja derecha. El servidor se llamaba Malco. Jesús dijo a Simón Pedro: “Envaina tu espada. ¿Acaso no beberé el cáliz que me ha dado el Padre?” El destacamento de soldados, con el tribuno y los guardias judíos, se apoderaron de Jesús y lo ataron. Lo llevaron primero ante Anás, porque era suegro de Caifás, Sumo Sacerdote aquel año. Caifás era el que había aconsejado a los judíos: “Es preferible que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo.”

  3. Parte 2 – Primera Negación de Pedro
    Entre tanto, Simón Pedro, acompañado de otro discípulo, seguía a Jesús. Este discípulo, que era conocido del Sumo Sacerdote, entró con Jesús en el patio del Pontífice, mientras Pedro permanecía afuera, en la puerta. El otro discípulo, el que era conocido del Sumo Sacerdote, salió, habló a la portera e hizo entrar a Pedro. La portera dijo entonces a Pedro: “¿No eres tú también uno de los discípulos de ese hombre?” Él le respondió: “No lo soy.” Los servidores y los guardias se calentaban junto al fuego, que habían encendido porque hacía frío. Pedro también estaba con ellos, junto al fuego.

  4. Parte 3 – La Inquisición afrente de Anás
    El Sumo Sacerdote interrogó a Jesús acerca de sus discípulos y de su enseñanza. Jesús le respondió: “He hablado abiertamente al mundo; siempre enseñé en la sinagoga y en el Templo, donde se reúnen todos los judíos, y no he dicho nada en secreto. ¿Por qué me interrogas a mí? Pregunta a los que me han oído qué les enseñé. Ellos saben bien lo que he dicho.” Apenas Jesús dijo esto, uno de los guardias allí presentes le dio una bofetada, diciéndole: “¿Así respondes al Sumo Sacerdote?” Jesús le respondió: “Si he hablado mal, muestra en qué ha sido; pero se he hablado bien, ¿por qué me pegas? Entonces Anás lo envió atado ante el Sumo Sacerdote Caifás.

    Simón Pedro permanecía junto al fuego. Los que estaban con él le dijeron: “¿No eres tú también uno de sus discípulos?” Él lo negó y dijo: “No lo soy.” Uno de los servidores del Sumo Sacerdote, pariente de aquel al que Pedro había cortado la oreja, insistió: “¿Acaso no te vi con él en la huerta?” Pedro volvió a negarlo, y enseguida cantó el gallo.

  6. Parte 5 – Jesús se entregó a Pilato
    Desde la casa de Caifás llevaron a Jesús al pretorio. Era de madrugada. Pero ellos no entraron en el pretorio, para no contaminarse y poder así participar en la comida de Pascua. Pilato salió adonde estaban ellos y les preguntó: “¿Qué acusación traen contra este hombre?” Ellos respondieron: “Si no fuera un malhechor, no te lo hubiéramos entregado.” Pilato les dijo: “Tómenlo y júzguenlo ustedes mismos, según la ley que tienen.” Los judíos le dijeron: “A nosotros no nos está permitido dar muerte a nadie.” Así debía cumplirse lo que había dicho Jesús cuando indicó cómo iba a morir.

  7. Parte 6 – Pilato hace preguntas a Jesús
    Pilato volvió a entrar en el pretorio, llamó a Jesús y le preguntó: “¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?” Jesús le respondió: “¿Dices esto por ti mismo u otros te lo han dicho de mí?” Pilato explicó: “¿Acaso yo soy judío? Tus compatriotas y los sumos sacerdotes te han puesto en mis manos. ¿Qué es lo que has hecho?” Jesús respondió: “Mi realeza no es de este mundo. Si mi realeza fuera de este mundo, los que están a mi servicio habrían combatido para que yo no fuera entregado a los judíos. Pero mi realeza no es de aquí.” Pilato le dijo: “¿Entonces tú eres rey?” Jesús respondió: “Tú lo dices: yo soy rey. Para esto he nacido y he venido al mundo: para dar testimonio de la verdad. El que es de la verdad, escucha mi voz.” Pilato le preguntó: “¿Qué es la verdad?”

    Al decir esto, salió nuevamente a donde estaban los judíos y les dijo: “Yo no encuentro en él ningún motivo para condenarlo. Y ya que ustedes tienen la costumbre de que ponga en libertad a alguien, en ocasión de la Pascua, ¿quieren que suelte al rey de los judíos?” Ellos comenzaron a gritar, diciendo: “¡A él no, a Barrabás!” Barrabás era un revolucionario.

    Pilato se alarmó más todavía. Volvió a entrar en el pretorio y preguntó a Jesús: “¿De dónde eres tú?” Pero Jesús no lo respondió nada. Pilato le dijo: “¿No quieres hablarme? ¿No sabes que tengo autoridad para soltarte y también para crucificarte?” Jesús le respondió: “Tú no tendrías sobre mí ninguna autoridad, si no la hubieras recibido de lo alto. Por eso, el que me ha entregado a ti ha cometido un pecado más grave.”

  12. Parte 11 – Jesús sentenciado para estar crucificado
    Desde ese momento, Pilato trataba de ponerlo en libertad. Pero los judíos gritaban: “Si lo sueltas, no eres amigo del César, porque el que se hace rey se opone al César.” Al oír esto, Pilato sacó afuera a Jesús y lo hizo sentar sobre un estrado, en el lugar llamado “el Empedrado”, en hebreo, “Gábata.” Era el día de la Preparación de la Pascua, alrededor del mediodía. Pilato dijo a los judíos: “Aquí tienen a su rey.” Ellos vociferaban: “¡Que muera! ¡Que muera! ¡Crucifícalo!” Pilato les dijo: “¿Voy a crucificar a su rey?” Los sumos sacerdotes respondieron: “No tenemos otro rey que el César.” Entonces Pilato se lo entregó para que lo crucifiquen, y ellos se lo llevaron.

  13. Parte 12 – La crucifixión y la muerte de Jesús
    Jesús, cargando sobre sí la cruz, salió de la ciudad para dirigirse al lugar llamado “del Cráneo”, en hebreo “Gólgota.” Allí lo crucificaron; y con él a otros dos, uno a cada lado y Jesús en el medio. Pilato redactó una inscripción que decía: "Jesús el Nazareno, rey de los judíos", y la hizo poner sobre la cruz. Muchos judíos leyeron esta inscripción, porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado quedaba cerca de la ciudad y la inscripción estaba en hebreo, latín y griego. Los sumos sacerdotes de los judíos dijeron a Pilato: “No escribas: ‘El rey de los judíos’, sino: ‘Este ha dicho: Yo soy el rey de los judíos’”. Pilato respondió: “Lo escrito, escrito está.” Después que los soldados crucificaron a Jesús, tomaron sus vestiduras y las dividieron en cuatro partes, una para cada uno. Tomaron también la túnica, y como no tenía costura, porque estaba hecha de una sola pieza de arriba abajo, se dijeron entre sí: “No la rompamos. Vamos a sortearla, para ver a quién le toca.” Así se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Se repartieron mis vestiduras y sortearon mi túnica. Esto fue lo que hicieron los soldados. Junto a la cruz de Jesús, estaba su madre y la hermana de su madre, María, mujer de Cleofás, y María Magdalena. Al ver a la madre y cerca de ella al discípulo a quien él amaba, Jesús le dijo: “Mujer, aquí tienes a tu hijo.” Luego dijo al discípulo: “Aquí tienes a tu madre.” Y desde aquel momento, el discípulo la recibió en su casa. Después, sabiendo que ya todo estaba cumplido, y para que la Escritura se cumpliera hasta el final, Jesús dijo: “Tengo sed.” Había allí un recipiente lleno de vinagre; empaparon en él una esponja, la ataron a una rama de hisopo y se la acercaron a la boca. Después de beber el vinagre, dijo Jesús: “Todo se ha cumplido.” E inclinando la cabeza, entregó su espíritu.

  14. Parte 13 – La sangre y el agua
    Era el día de la Preparación de la Pascua. Los judíos pidieron a Pilato que hiciera quebrar las piernas de los crucificados y mandara retirar sus cuerpos, para que no quedaran en la cruz durante el sábado, porque ese sábado era muy solemne. Los soldados fueron y quebraron las piernas a los dos que habían sido crucificados con Jesús. Cuando llegaron a él, al ver que ya estaba muerto, no le quebraron las piernas, sino que uno de los soldados le atravesó el costado con la lanza, y en seguida brotó sangre y agua. El que vio esto lo atestigua: su testimonio es verdadero y él sabe que dice la verdad, para que también ustedes crean. Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera la Escritura que dice: "No le quebrarán ninguno de sus huesos". Y otro pasaje de la Escritura, dice: "Verán al que ellos mismos traspasaron".

  15. Parte 14 – Jesús está sepultado
    Después de esto, José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús pero secretamente, por temor a los judíos. Pidió autorización a Pilato para retirar el cuerpo de Jesús. Pilato se la concedió, y él fue a retirarlo. Fue también Nicodemo, el mismo que anteriormente había ido a verlo de noche, y trajo una mezcla de mirra y áloe, que pesaba unos treinta kilos. Tomaron entonces el cuerpo de Jesús y lo envolvieron con vendas, agregándole la mezcla de perfumes, según la costumbre de sepultar que tienen los judíos. En el lugar donde lo crucificaron había una huerta y en ella, una tumba nueva, en la que todavía nadie había sido sepultado. Como era para los judíos el día de la Preparación y el sepulcro estaba cerca, pusieron allí a Jesús.

    Ang tugon ay: Sa iyong kamay, ipinagkakatiwala ko ang aking buhay.
    Lumalapit ako sa iyo, Yahweh, upang ingatan; huwag mo sana akong ilagay sa kahihiyan.
    • Ikaw ay isang Diyos na makatuwiran, iligtas mo ako, ito'ng aking kahilingan. Sa iyong kamay, ipinagkakatiwala ko ang aking buhay.     1. Ikalawang pagbabasa (Hebreo 4: 14–16 at 5: 7–9)
      Ang pagbabasa sa sulat ni San Pablo sa mga Hebreo.
      Kaya nga, magpakatatag tayo sa ating pananampalataya, dahil mayroon tayong Dakilang Pinakapunong Pari na pumasok na sa kalangitan, doon mismo sa harap ng Diyos. Siya'y walang iba kundi si Jesus na Anak ng Diyos.
