First Reading (Isaiah 50: 5–9a)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
The Lord God has opened my ear. I have not rebelled, nor have I withdrawn. I offered my back to those who strike me, my cheeks to those who pulled my beard; neither did I shield my face from blows, spittle and disgrace. I have not despaired, for the Lord God comes to my help. So, like a flint I set my face, knowing that I will not be disgraced. He who avenges me is near. Who then will accuse me? Let us confront each other. Who is now my accuser? Let him approach. If the Lord God is my help, who will condemn me?
Second Reading (James 2: 14–18)
A reading from the letter of Saint James.
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, to profess faith without showing works? Such faith has no power to save you. If a brother or sister is in need of clothes or food and one of you states, "May things go well for you; be warm and satisfied," without attending to their material needs, what good is that? So it is for faith without deeds: it is totally dead. Say to whoever challenges you, "You have faith and I have good deeds; show me your faith apart from actions and I, for my part, will show you my faith in the way I act."
Gospel (Mark 8: 27–35)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
Jesus set out with his disciples for the villages around Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" And they told him, "Some say you are John the Baptist; others say you are Elijah or one of the prophets." Then Jesus asked them, "But you, who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Messiah." And he ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus then began to teach them that the Son of Man had to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law. He would be killed and after three days rise again. Jesus stated all this quite openly, so that Peter took him aside and began to protest strongly. But Jesus turning around, and looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter saying, "Get behind me Satan! You are thinking not as God does, but as people do." Then Jesus called the people and his disciples and stated, "If you want to follow me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it; and if you lose your life for me sake and for the sake of the Gospel, you will save it."
Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 116) (Verses 1–9)

I am pleased that the Lord has heard my voice in supplication, that he has not been deaf to me, the day I called on him.
When the cords of death entangled me, the snares of the grave laid hold of me, when affliction got the better of me, I called upon the name of the Lord: O Lord, save my life!
Gracious and righteous is the Lord; full of compassion is our God. The Lord protects the simple: have saved me when I was humbled.
For he has freed my soul from death, my eyes from weeping, and my feet from stumbling; I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

El Señor Yahvé me ha abierto los oídos y yo no me resistí ni me eché atrás. He ofrecido mi espalda a los que me golpeaban, mis mejillas a quienes me tiraban la barba, y no oculté mi rostro ante las injurias y los escupos. El Señor Yahvé está de mi parte, y por eso no me molestan las ofensas; por eso, puse mi cara dura como piedra. Y yo sé que no quedaré frustrado, aquí viene mi juez, ¿quieren meterme pleito? Presentémonos juntos, y si hay algún demandante, ¡que se acerque! Si el Señor Yahvé está de mi parte, ¿quién podrá condenarme?
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 116) (Versículos 1–9)
La respuesta es: Caminaré en la presencia del Señor, en la tierra de los vivientes.
• Amo al Señor, porque él escucha el clamor de mi súplica, porque inclina su oído hacia mí, cuando yo lo invoco.
• Los lazos de la muerte me envolvieron, me alcanzaron las redes del Abismo, caí en la angustia y la tristeza; entonces invoqué al Señor: “¡Por favor, sálvame la vida!”
• El Señor es justo y bondadoso, nuestro Dios es compasivo; el Señor protege a los sencillos: yo estaba en la miseria y me salvó.
• Alma mía, recobra la calma, porque el Señor ha sido bueno contigo. Él libró mi vida de la muerte, mis ojos de las lágrimas y mis pies de la caída. Yo caminaré en la presencia del Señor, en la tierra de los vivientes.
Segunda Lectura (Santiago 2: 14–18)

Hermanos, si uno dice que tiene fe, pero no viene con obras, ¿de qué le sirve? ¿Acaso lo salvará esa fe? Si un hermano o una hermana no tienen con qué vestirse ni qué comer, y ustedes les dicen: “Que les vaya bien, caliéntense y aliméntense,” sin darles lo necesario para el cuerpo, ¿de qué les sirve eso? Lo mismo ocurre con la fe: si no produce obras, es que está muerta. Y sería fácil decirle a uno: “Tú tienes fe, pero yo tengo obras. Muéstrame tu fe sin obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe a través de las obras.”
Evangelio (Marcos 8: 27–35)
Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según San Marcos.
Jesús salió con sus discípulos hacia los poblados de Cesárea de Filipo, y en el camino les preguntó: “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?” Ellos le respondieron: “Algunos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, Elías; y otros, alguno de los profetas.” Entonces Jesús les preguntó, “Pero ustedes, ¿quién dicen ustedes que soy yo?” Pedro le respondió, “Tú eres el Mesías.” Jesús les ordenó terminantemente que no dijeran nada acerca de él. Y comenzó a enseñarles que el Hijo del hombre debía sufrir mucho y ser rechazado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas; que debía ser condenado a muerte y resucitar después de tres días; y les hablaba de esto con toda claridad. Pedro, llevándolo aparte, comenzó a reprenderlo. Pero Jesús, dándose vuelta y mirando a sus discípulos, lo reprendió, diciendo: “¡Retírate, ve detrás de mí, Satanás! Porque tus pensamientos no son los de Dios, sino los de los hombres.” Entonces Jesús, llamando a la multitud, junto con sus discípulos, les dijo: “Él que quiera venir detrás de mí, que renuncie a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz y me siga. Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y él que pierda su vida por mí y por la Buena Noticia, la salvará.

Binigyan ako ng Panginoong Yahweh ng pang-unawa, hindi ako naghimagsik o tumalikod sa kanya. Hindi ako gumanti nang bugbugin nila ako, hindi ako kumibo nang insultuhin nila ako. Pinabayaan ko silang bunutin ang aking balbas at luraan ang aking mukha. Hindi ko pinansin ang mga pag-insultong ginawa nila sa akin, sapagkat ang Panginoong Yahweh ang tumutulong sa akin. Handa akong magtiis, sapagkat aking nalalaman na ako'y hindi mapapahiya. Ang Diyos ay malapit, at siya ang magpapatunay na wala akong sala. May mangangahas bang ako'y usigin? Magharap kami sa hukuman, at ilahad ang kanyang paratang. Ang Panginoong Yahweh mismo ang magtatanggol sa akin.
Awit (Awit 116) (Bersikulo 1–9)
Ang tugon ay: Sa presensya ni Yahweh doon ako mananahan, doon ako mananahan sa daigdig nitong buhay.
• Minamahal ko si Yahweh, pagkat ako'y dinirinig, dinirinig niya ako, sa dalangin ko at hibik; ako'y kanyang dinirinig tuwing ako'y tumatawag, kaya nga't habang buhay ko'y sa iyo lagi tatawag.
• Noong ako'y mahuhulog sa bingit ng kamatayan, nadarama ko ang tindi ng takot ko sa libingan; lipos ako ng pangamba at masidhing katakutan. Sa ganoong kalagayan, si Yahweh ang tinawag ko, at ako ay nagsumamo na iligtas niya ako.
• Si Yahweh'y napakabuti, mahal niya ang katuwiran, Diyos siyang mahabagin, sa awa ay mayaman. Si Yahweh ang nag-iingat sa wala nang sumaklolo; noong ako ay manganib, iniligtas niya ako.
• Manalig ka, O puso ko, kay Yahweh ka magtiwala, pagkat siya ay mabuti't hindi siya nagpapabaya. Ako'y kanyang iniligtas sa kuko ng kamatayan, tinubos sa pagkatalo, at luha ko'y pinahiran. Sa presensya ni Yahweh doon ako mananahan, doon ako mananahan sa daigdig nitong buhay.
Pangalawang pagbabasa (Santiago 2: 14–18)

Mga kapatid, ano ang mapapala ng isang tao kung sabihin man niyang siya'y may pananampalataya, ngunit hindi naman niya ito pinapatunayan sa gawa? Maililigtas ba siya ng ganoong uri ng pananampalataya? Halimbawa, may isang kapatid na walang maisuot at walang makain. Kung sasabihin ninyo sa kanya, "Patnubayan ka nawa ng Diyos; magbihis ka't magpakabusog," ngunit hindi naman ninyo siya binibigyan ng kanyang kailangan, may mabuti bang naidudulot sa kanya iyon? Gayundin naman, patay ang pananampalatayang walang kalakip na gawa. Ngunit may nagsasabi, "May pananampalataya ka at may gawa naman ako." Ipakita mo sa akin ang iyong pananampalatayang walang kasamang gawa, at ipapakita ko naman sa iyo ang aking pananampalataya sa pamamagitan ng aking mga gawa.

Sumagot sila, "Ang sabi po ng ilan, kayo daw po si Juan na Tagapagbautismo; sabi naman ng iba, si Elias daw kayo; may nagsasabi ring isa raw kayo sa mga propeta." "Ngunit para sa inyo, ano ang masasabi ninyo tungkol sa akin?" tanong niya. Sumagot si Pedro, "Kayo po ang Cristo." "Huwag ninyong sasabihin kaninuman kung sino ako," mahigpit na utos niya sa kanila. ula noon, ipinaalam na ni Jesus sa mga alagad ang mangyayari sa kanya. Sinabi niya, "Ang Anak ng Tao ay dapat magdanas ng matinding hirap. Siya'y itatakwil ng mga pinuno ng bayan, ng mga punong pari at ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. Siya'y ipapapatay ngunit muling mabubuhay sa ikatlong araw." Hayagang sinabi niya ito sa kanila at dahil dito'y dinala siya ni Pedro sa isang tabi at sinimulang pagalitan. Ngunit tumalikod si Jesus, tumingin sa mga alagad, at sinabi kay Pedro, "Umalis ka sa harap ko, Satanas! Ang iniisip mo'y hindi galing sa Diyos kundi sa tao." Pinalapit ni Jesus ang mga tao at ang kanyang mga alagad, at sinabi sa kanila, "Ang sinumang nagnanais sumunod sa akin ay kinakailangang itakwil niya ang kanyang sarili, pasanin ang kanyang krus, at sumunod sa akin. Ang sinumang nagnanais na magligtas ng kanyang buhay ay mawawalan nito; ngunit ang mawalan ng kanyang buhay alang-alang sa akin at sa Magandang Balita ay magkakamit nito.
