First Reading (Isaiah 53: 10–11)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with grief. When he makes himself an offering for sin, he will have a long life and see his descendants. Through him the will of the Lord is done. For the anguish he suffered, he will see the light and obtain perfect knowledge. My just servant will justify the multitude; he will bear and take away their guilt.
Second Reading (Hebrews 4: 14–16)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
We have a great High Priest, Jesus, the Son of God, who has entered heaven. Let us, then, hold fast to the faith we profess. Our high priest is not indifferent to our weaknesses, for he was tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sinning. Let us, then, with confidence approach God, the giver of grace; we will obtain mercy and, through his favor, help in due time.
Gospel (Mark 10: 35–45)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and stated to him, "Master, we want you to grant us what we are going to ask of you." And he stated, "What do you want me to do for you?" They answered, "Grant us to sit one at your right and one at your left when you come in your glory." But Jesus stated to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized in the way I am baptized?" They answered, "We can." And Jesus told them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink, and you will be baptized in the way I am baptized. But to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to grant. It has been prepared for others." On hearing this, the other ten were angry with James and John; Jesus then called them to him and stated, "As you know, the so-called rulers of the nations act as tyrants and their great ones oppress them. But it shall not be so among you; whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you shall make himself slave of all. Think of the Son of Man who has not come to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many."

— Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
— See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine.
— Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you.

Quiso Yahvé destrozarlo con padecimientos, y él ofreció su vida como sacrificio por el pecado. Por esto verá a sus descendientes y tendrá larga vida, y el proyecto de Dios prosperará en sus manos. Después de las amarguras que haya padecido su alma, gozará del pleno conocimiento. El Justo, mi servidor, hará una multitud de justos, después de cargar con sus deudas.
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 33) (Versículos 4–5, 18–20 y 22)
La respuesta es: Señor, que tengas misericordia de nosotros, mientras confiamos en ti.
• Porque la palabra del Señor es recta y él obra siempre con lealtad; él ama la justicia y el derecho, y la tierra está llena de su amor.
• Los ojos del Señor están fijos sobre sus fieles, sobre los que esperan en su misericordia, para librar sus vidas de la muerte y sustentarlos en el tiempo de indigencia.
• Nuestra alma espera en el Señor; él es nuestra ayuda y nuestro escudo. Señor, que tu amor descienda sobre nosotros, conforme a la esperanza que tenemos en ti.
Segunda Lectura (Hebreos 4: 14–16)
Una lectura de la carta de San Pablo a los Hebreos.
Tenemos, pues, un sumo sacerdote excepcional, que ha entrado en el mismo cielo, Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. Esto es suficiente para que nos mantengamos firmes en la fe que profesamos. Nuestro sumo sacerdote no se queda indiferente ante nuestras debilidades, pues ha sido probado en todo igual que nosotros, a excepción del pecado. Por lo tanto, acerquémonos con plena confianza a la sede de la gracia, a fin de obtener misericordia y hallar la gracia del auxilio oportuno.
Evangelio (Marcos 10: 35–45)
Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según San Marcos.
Santiago y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, se acercaron a Jesús y le dijeron: “Maestro, queremos que nos concedas lo que te vamos a pedir.” Él les dijo: “¿Qué quieren de mí?” Respondieron: “Concédenos que nos sentemos uno a tu derecha y otro a tu izquierda cuando estés en tu gloria.” Jesús les dijo: “Ustedes no saben lo que piden. ¿Pueden beber la copa que yo estoy bebiendo o ser bautizados como yo soy bautizado?” Ellos contestaron: “Sí, podemos.” Jesús les dijo: “Pues bien, la copa que voy a beber yo, la beberán también ustedes, y serán bautizados con él mismo bautismo que voy a recibir yo; pero el sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me corresponde a mí para concederlo; eso ha sido preparado para otros.” Cuando los otros diez oyeron esto, se enojaron con Santiago y Juan. Jesús los llamó y les dijo: “Como ustedes saben, los que se consideran jefes de las naciones actúan como dictadores, y los que ocupan cargos abusan de su autoridad. Pero no será así entre ustedes. Por el contrario, él que quiera ser el más importante entre ustedes, debe hacerse el servidor de todos, él que quiera ser el primero, se hará esclavo de todos. Sepan que el Hijo del Hombre no ha venido para ser servido, sino para servir y dar su vida como rescate por una muchedumbre.”
