20th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Readings for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Date: August 14, 2016

First Reading (Jeremiah 38: 4–6 and 8–10)

A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.
The officials told King Zedekiah, "This man should be put to death, because he is weakening the will of the fighting men and the people left the city. In fact he is not out to save the people but to do harm." King Zedekiah stated, "His life is in your hands for the king has no power against you." So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Malchiah the king's son, in the Guards' Court. They lowered him by means of ropes, There was no water in the cistern but only mud and Jeremiah sank into the mud. Ebedmelech went and spoke to him, "My lord king! These men have acted wickedly in all they did to Jeremiah the prophet. They threw him into the cistern where he will die." So the king ordered Ebedmelech the Ethiopian: "Take three men with you from here and draw Jeremiah the prophet out from the cistern before he dies."

Second Reading (Hebrews 12: 1–4)

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
What a cloud of innumerable witnesses surround us! So let us be rid of every encumbrance, and especially of sin, to persevere in running the race marked out before us. Let us look to Jesus the founder of our faith, who will bring it to completion. For the sake of the joy reserved for him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and then sat at the right of the throne of God. Think of Jesus who suffered so many contradictions from evil people, and you will not be discouraged or grow weary. Have you already shed your blood in the struggle against sin?

Gospel (Luke 12: 49–53)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Jesus stated this to his disciples: "I have come to bring fire upon the earth and how I wish it were already kindled; but I have a baptism to undergo and what anguish I feel until it is over! Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on, in one house five will be decided; three against two, and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."


Daytime Readings for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

First Reading (Revelation 11:19a; 12: 1–6, and 10ab)
A reading from the book of Revelation.
Then the sanctuary of God in the heavens was opened, and the Ark of the Covenant of God could be seen inside the sanctuary. A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain, looking to her time of delivery. Then another sign appeared: a huge, red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and wearing seven crowns on its heads. It had just swept along a third of the stars of heaven with its tail, throwing them down to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour the child as soon as it was born. She gave birth to a male child, the one who is to rule all the nations with an iron scepter; then her child was seized and taken up to God and to his throne while the woman fled to the desert where God had prepared a place for her; there she would be looked after for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Then I heard a loud voice from heaven: Now has salvation come, with the power and the kingdom of our God, and the rule of his anointed.

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 15: 20–27a)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead and he comes before all those who have fallen asleep. A human being brought death; a human being also brings resurrection of the dead. All die for being Adam's, and in Christ all will receive life. However, each one in his own time: first Christ, then Christ's people, when he visits them. Then the end will come, when Christ delivers the kingdom to God the Father, after having destroyed every rule, authority and power. For he must reign and put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed will be death. As Scripture says: God has subjected everything under his feet.

Gospel (Luke 1: 39–56)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Mary then sets out for a town in the Hills of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with holy spirit, and giving a loud cry, she cried out, "You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!" And Mary stated: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name. From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promise our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever." Mary remained with Elizabeth for approximately three months and then returned home.

    With resolve I waited for the Lord; he listened and heard me beg.

    Out of the horrid pit he drew me, out of deadly quicksand. He settled my feet upon a rock and made my steps steady.

    He put a new song in my mouth, and song of praise to our God. Many will see and be awed and put their trust in the Lord.

    Though I am afflicted and poor, yet the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my savior — O Lord, do not delay!

    Una lectura de libro del profeta Jeremías.
    Y aquellos jefes dijeron al rey: “Este hombre debe morir, porque sus discursos desalientan a los combatientes que quedan en esta ciudad y aun a todo el pueblo. Es evidente que este hombre no busca nuestro bien, sino que trata de perdernos.” Sedecías respondió: “Ahí lo tienen, pues el rey nada puede contra ustedes.” Entonces se apoderaron de Jeremías y lo echaron al pozo de Melquías, hijo del rey, situado en el patio de la guardia, bajándolo con cuerdas. En el pozo no había agua, sino puro fango, y Jeremías se hundió en el fango. El etíope Abdemalec salió del palacio y fue al encuentro del rey, que estaba sentado a la Puerta de Benjamín y le habló en estos términos: “¡Oh, mi señor!, esos hombres han procedido muy mal con el profeta Jeremías. Lo han echado en el pozo, donde va a morir.” Entonces el rey ordenó al etíope: “Toma tres hombres y saca a Jeremías del pozo antes de que muera.”

Depongamos, pues, toda carga inútil, y en especial las amarras del pecado, para correr hasta el final la prueba que nos espera, fijos los ojos en Jesús, que organiza esta carrera de la fe y la premia al final. Él escogió la cruz en vez de la felicidad que se le ofrecía; no tuvo miedo a la humillación, y ahora está sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios. Piensen en Jesús, que sufrió tantas contradicciones de parte de gente mala, y no les faltarán las fuerzas ni el ánimo. Ustedes se enfrentan con el mal, pero todavía no han tenido que resistir hasta la sangre.

    Evangelio (Lucas 12: 49–53)

    “Yo he venido a traer fuego sobre la tierra, ¡y cómo desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo!     Kaya sinabi ng mga pinuno, “Mahal na hari, dapat ipapatay ang taong ito. Sa kasasalita niya ay natatakot tuloy ang mga kawal pati ang mga mamamayan. Hindi nakakatulong sa bayan ang taong iyan; nais pa niyang mapahamak tayong lahat.” Kaya sinabi ni Haring Zedekias, “Kung gayon, gawin ninyo sa kanya ang nais ninyo; hindi ko kayo mapipigil.” Dinakip nila si Jeremias at inihulog sa balon ni Malquias, ang anak ng hari, na nasa himpilan ng mga bantay. Hindi tubig kundi putik ang laman ng balon, kaya lumubog siya sa putik. Pinuntahan ni Ebed-melec ang hari at sinabi, “Mahal na hari, masama ang ginawa ng mga pinuno; inihulog nila sa balon si Jeremias. Maaaring mamatay siya sa gutom sapagkat wala nang pagkain sa lunsod.” Inutusan ng hari si Ebed-melec na magsama ng tatlong lalaki at pagtulung-tulungan nilang iahon sa balon si Jeremias bago ito mamatay.

    Pangalawang pagbabasa (Mga Hebreo 12: 1–4)
    Ang pagbabasa sa sulat ni San Pablo sa mga Hebreo.
    Kaya nga, dahil napapaligiran tayo ng napakaraming saksi, tanggalin natin ang anumang balakid at ang kasalanang kumakapit sa atin. Buong tiyaga tayong tumakbo sa takbuhing nasa ating harapan. Ituon natin ang ating paningin kay Jesus. Sa kanya nakasalalay ang ating pananampalataya mula simula hanggang katapusan. Dahil sa kagalakang naghihintay sa kanya, hindi niya inalintana ang kahihiyan ng pagkamatay sa krus, at siya ngayo'y nakaupo sa kanan ng trono ng Diyos. Isip-isipin ninyo kung gaano ang tiniis niyang pag-uusig sa kamay ng mga makasalanan, upang hindi kayo manlupaypay o panghinaan ng loob. Hindi pa humahantong sa pagdanak ng dugo ang pakikipaglaban ninyo sa kasalanan.

    このように、数えきれないほどの多くの証人たちが、競技場の観覧席で私たちを見つめているのです。だから、うしろへ引き戻そうとする力や、まとわりつく罪をふり捨てて、神の用意された競走を忍耐をもって走り抜こうではありませんか。あなたがたの信仰の指導者であり教師であるイエスから、目を離さないようにしなさい。イエスは後にある喜びを知って、恥辱をものともせず十字架にかかられました。そして今は、神の王座の右に座しておられるのです。罪人たちの恐ろしい反抗を忍ばれたイエスのことを、いつも思っていなさい。あなたがたが気力を失い、弱り果てることがないためです。あなたがたは罪や誘惑と戦っています。けれどもまだ、血を流すほどのきびしい戦いを経験したことはありません。

    わたしは、この地上に火を投げ込むために来ました。ああ、この仕事がもうすでに終わっていたらよかったのですが。しかし、わたしには受けるべきバプテスマ(洗礼)が待っています。それが成し遂げられるまで、どんなに苦しむことでしょう。このわたしが、地上に平和を与えるために来たと思っているとしたら、そうではありません。それどころか、争いと分裂を引き起こすために来たのです。今から後、家庭内に分裂が生じるでしょう。五人家族であれば、三人対二人というように、わたしに賛成するか反対するかで分かれて争うことになります。わたしのことで、息子は父に逆らうでしょう。母と娘は一致しなくなり、しゅうとめも嫁に退けられるでしょう。
