Readings for the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
First Reading (Isaiah 49: 1–6)
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Listen to me, O islands, pay attention, peoples from distant lands. The Lord called me from my mother's womb; he pronounced my name before I was born. He made my mouth like a sharpened sword. He hid me in the shadow of his hand. He made me into a polished arrow set apart in his quiver. He stated to me, "You are Israel, my servant, through you I will be known." "I have labored in vain," I thought, and spent my strength for nothing. Yet what is due me was in the hand of the Lord, and my reward was with my God. I am important in the sight of the Lord, and my God is my strength. And now the Lord has spoken, he who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, to gather Israel to him. He stated, "It is not enough that you should be my servant, to restore the tribes of Jacob, to bring back the remnant of Israel. I will make you the light of the nations, that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth."
Second Reading (Acts 13: 22–26)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Paul stated in front of the assembly: "After that time, God removed him and raised up David as king, to whom he bore witness saying: I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all I want him to do. It is from the descendants of David that God has now raised up the promised savior of Israel, Jesus. Before he appeared, John proclaimed a baptism of repentance for all the people of Israel. As John was ending his life's work, he stated: 'I am not what you think I am, for after me another one is coming whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.' Brothers, children and descendants of Abraham, and you also who fear God, it is to you that this message of salvation has been sent."
Gospel (Luke 1: 57–66 and 80)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
When the time came for Elizabeth, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the merciful Lord had done a wonderful thing for her and they rejoiced with her. When on the eighth day they came to attend the circumcision of the child, they wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother stated, "Not so; he shall be called John." They stated to her, "No one in your family has that name"; and they asked the father by means of signs for the name he wanted to give. Zechariah asked for a writing tablet and wrote on it, "His name is John," and they were very surprised. Immediately, Zechariah could speak again and his first words were in praise of God. A holy fear came on all in their neighborhood, and throughout the Hills of Judea the people talk about these events. All who heard of it pondered in their minds and wondered, "What will this child be?" For they understood that the hand of the Lord was with him. As the child grew up, he was seen to be strong in the Spirit; he lived in the desert till the day when he appeared openly in Israel.
Readings for the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading (Jeremiah 20: 10–13)

I hear many people whispering, "Terror is all around! Denounce him! Yes, denounce him!" All my friends watch me to see if I will slip: "Perhaps he can be deceived," they say; "then we can get the bettero f him and have our revenge." But Yahweh, a mighty warrior, is with me. My persecutors will stumble and not prevail; that failure will be their shame and their disgrace will never be forgotten. Yahweh, God of hosts, you test the just and probe the heart and mind. Let me see your revenge on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to Yahweh! Praise Yahweh and say: he has rescued the poor from the clutches of the wicked!
Second Reading (Romans 5: 12–15)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.
Now, sin entered the world through one man and through sin, death, and later on death spread to all humankind, because all sinned. As long as there was no law, they could not speak of disobedience, but sin was already in the world. This is why from Adam to Moses death reigned among them, although their sin was not disobedience as in Adam's case—this was not the true Adam, but foretold the other who was to come. Such has been the fall, but God's gift goes far beyond. Multitudes die because of the fault of one man, but how much more does the grace of God spread when the gift he granted reaches the multitudes, from this unique man Jesus Christ.
Gospel (Matthew 10: 26–33)

Jesus sends out the twelve by saying: "There is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be made known What I am telling you in the dark, you must speak in the light. What you hear in private, proclaim from the housetops. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but have no power to kill the soul. Rather be afraid of him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. For only a few cents you can buy two sparrows, yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father's consent. As for you, every hair of your head has been counted. So do not be afraid: you are worth much more than many sparrows. Whoever acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. Whoever rejects me before others I will reject before my Father in heaven."

• I am held in contempt for your sake, and shame has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s sons. Zeal for your house consumes me as fire and those who insult you insult me as well.
• But I pray to you, O lord, at a time most favorable to you. In your great love, O God, answer me with your unfailing help. In your mercy, O Lord, give me a good answer; in your great compassion, turn to me.
• Let the lowly witness this and be glad. You who seek God, may your hearts be revived. For the Lord hears the needy and does not despise those in captivity. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and whatever moves in them.

Yo oía a mis adversarios que decían contra mí: “¿Cuándo, por fin, lo denunciarán?” Ahora me observan los que antes me saludaban, esperando que yo tropiece para desquitarse de mí. Pero Yahvé está conmigo, él, mi poderoso defensor; los que me persiguen no me vencerán. Caerán ellos y tendrán la vergüenza de su fracaso, y su humillación no se olvidará jamás. Yahvé, Señor, tus ojos están pendientes del hombre justo. Tú conoces las conciencias y los corazones, haz que vea cuando te desquites de ellos, porque a ti he confiado mi defensa. ¡Canten y alaben a Yahvé, que salvó al desamparado de las manos de los malvados!
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 69) (Versículos 8–10, 14, 17, and 33–35)
La respuesta es: Señor, por tu gran amor, respóndeme.
• Por ti he soportado afrentas y la vergüenza cubrió mi rostro; me convertí en un extraño para mis hermanos, fui un extranjero para los hijos de mi madre: porque el celo de tu Casa me devora, y caen sobre mí los ultrajes de los que te agravian.

Segunda lectura (Romanos 5: 12–15)

Por lo tanto, por un solo hombre entró el pecado en el mundo, y por el pecado la muerte, y así la muerte pasó a todos los hombres, porque todos pecaron. En efecto, el pecado ya estaba en el mundo, antes de la Ley, pero cuando no hay Ley, el pecado no se tiene en cuenta. Sin embargo, la muerte reinó desde Adán hasta Moisés, incluso en aquellos que no habían pecado, cometiendo una transgresión semejante a la de Adán, que es figura del que debía venir. Pero no hay proporción entre el don y la falta. Porque si la falta de uno solo provocó la muerte de todos, la gracia de Dios y el don conferido pro la gracia de un solo hombre, Jesucristo, fueron derramados mucho más abundantemente sobre todos.
Evangelio (Mateo 10: 26–33)

Jesús les dijo a los Doce: “Pero no les tengan miedo. Nada hay oculto que no llegue a ser descubierto, ni nada secreto que no llegue a saberse. Lo que yo les digo en la oscuridad, repítanlo ustedes a la luz, y lo que les digo en privado, proclámenlo desde las azoteas. No teman a los que sólo pueden matar el cuerpo, pero no el alma; teman más bien al que puede destruir alma y cuerpo en el infierno. ¿Acaso un par de pajaritos no se venden por unos centavos? Pero ni uno de ellos cae en tierra sin que lo permita vuestro Padre. En cuanto a ustedes, hasta sus cabellos están todos contados. ¿No valen ustedes más que muchos pajaritos? Por lo tanto no tengan miedo. Al que se ponga de mi parte ante los hombres, yo me pondré de su parte ante mi Padre de los Cielos. Y al que me niegue ante los hombres, yo también lo negaré ante mi Padre que está en los Cielos.”

Escúchenme, islas lejanas, pongan atención, pueblos. Yahvé me llamó desde el vientre de mi madre, conoció mi nombre desde antes que naciera. Hizo de mi boca una espada cortante y me guardó debajo de su mano. Hizo de mí una flecha puntiaguda que tenía escondida entre las otras. Él me dijo: “Tú eres mi servidor, Israel, y por ti me daré a conocer.” Mientras que yo pensaba: “He trabajado en balde, en vano he gastado mis fuerzas, para nada.” Yahvé, sin embargo, protegía mis derechos, mi Dios guardaba mi salario, pues soy importante para Yahvé, y mi Dios se hizo mi fuerza. Y ahora ha hablado Yahvé, que me formó desde el seno materno para que fuera su servidor, para que le traiga a Jacob y le junte a Israel: “No vale la pena que seas mi servidor únicamente para restablecer a las tribus de Jacob, o traer sus sobrevivientes a su patria. Tú serás, además, una luz para las naciones, para que mi salvación llegue hasta el último extremo de la tierra.”

La respuesta es: Te adoro, porque me has creado maravillosamente.
• Señor, tú me sondeas y me conoces . Tú sabes si me siento o me levanto; de lejos percibes lo que pienso, te das cuenta si camino o si descanso, y todos mis pasos te son familiares.
• Tú creaste mis entrañas, me plasmaste en el seno de mi madre: te doy gracias porque fui formado de manera tan admirable. ¡Qué maravillosas son tus obras!
• Tú conocías hasta el fondo de mi alma y nada de mi ser se te ocultaba, cuando yo era formado en lo secreto, cuando era tejido en lo profundo de la tierra.
Segunda lectura (Hechos de los Apóstoles 13: 22–26)

Y cuando Dios desechó a Saúl, les suscitó como rey a David, de quien dio este testimonio: He encontrado en David, el hijo de Jesé, a un hombre conforme a mi corazón que cumplirá siempre mi voluntad. De la descendencia de David, como lo había prometido, Dios hizo surgir para Israel un Salvador, que es Jesús. Como preparación a su venida, Juan había predicado un bautismo de penitencia a todo el pueblo de Israel. Y al final de su carrera, Juan decía: “Yo no soy el que ustedes creen, pero sepan que después de mí viene aquel a quien yo no soy digno de desatar las sandalias.” Hermanos, este mensaje de salvación está dirigido a ustedes: los descendientes de Abraham y los que temen a Dios.
Evangelio (Lucas 1: 57–66 y 80)

Cuando llegó el tiempo en que Isabel debía ser madre, dio a luz un hijo. Al enterarse sus vecinos y parientes de la gran misericordia con que Dios la había tratado, se alegraban con ella. A los ocho días, se reunieron para circuncidar al niño, y querían llamarlo Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre dijo: “No, debe llamarse Juan.” Ellos le decían: “No hay nadie en tu familia que lleve ese nombre.” Entonces preguntaron por señas al padre qué nombre quería que le pusieran. Este pidió una pizarra y escribió: “Su nombre es Juan.” Todos quedaron admirados. Y en ese mismo momento, Zacarías recuperó el habla y comenzó a alabar a Dios. Este acontecimiento produjo una gran impresión entre la gente de los alrededores, y se lo comentaba en toda la región montañosa de Judea. Todos los que se enteraron guardaban este recuerdo en su corazón y se decían: “¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?” Porque la mano del Señor estaba con él. El niño iba creciendo y se fortalecía en su espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que se manifestó a Israel.
