The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

New American Bible readings
First reading (Exodus 24: 3–8)
A reading from the book of Exodus.
When Moses came to the people and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD, they all answered with one voice, "We will do everything that the LORD has told us." Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and, rising early the next day, he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelites to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls as peace offerings to the LORD, Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; the other half he splashed on the altar. Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people, who answered, "All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do." Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of his."

Second reading (Hebrews 9: 11–15)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
Brothers and sisters: When Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation, he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God. For this reason, he is the mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.

Gospel (Mark 14: 12–16 and 22–26)

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there." The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Second reading (Hebrews 9: 11–15)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews.
Brothers and sisters: Now, Christ appeared as the high priest with regard to the good things of these new times. He passed through a sanctuary more noble and perfect, not made by hands, that is, not created. He did not take with himself the blood of goats and bulls but his own blood, when he entered once and for all into this sanctuary after obtaining definitive redemption. If the sprinkling of people defiled by sin with the blood of goats and bulls or with the ashes of a heifer provides them with exterior cleanness and holiness, how much more will it be with the blood of Christ? He, moved by the eternal Spirit, offered himself as an unblemished victim to God and his blood cleanses us from dead works, so that we may serve the living God. So Christ is the mediator of a new covenant or testament. His death made atonement for the sins committed under the old testament and the promise is handed over to all who are called to the everlasting inheritance.


Gospel (Mark 14: 12–16 and 22–26)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark.

On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day when the Passover Lamb was killed, the disciples asked Jesus, "Where would you have us go to prepare the Passover meal for you?" So Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions, "Go into the city and there a man will come to you carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters and say to the owner, 'The Master says: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' Then he will show you a large room upstairs, already arranged and furnished. There you will prepare for us." The disciples departed. When they reached the city, they found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. He stated, "Take this, it is my body." Then he took a cup and after he had given thanks, he passed the cup to them and they all drank from it. He stated, "This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which is to be poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I will not taste the fruit of the vine again until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God." After singing psalms of praise, they went out to the Hill of Olives.

    How shall I make a return to the LORD for all the good he has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.

    Precious in the eyes of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones. I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have loosed my bonds.

    To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. My vows to the LORD I will pay in the presence of all his people.

    How can I repay the Lord for all goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

    It is painful to the Lord to see the death of his faithful. O Lord, I am your servant, truly your servant, your handmaid's son. You have freed me from my bonds.

    I will offer you a thanksgiving sacrifice; I will call on the name of the Lord. I will carry out my vows to the Lord, in the presence of his people.

  3. Praise, O Zion, Christ our glory; to the Shepherd let us sing, tell to all the world the story; laud with all our might the King. Bread of life and source of living! Lacking, still our praises ring. On this day of Christian feasting, with full voices we delight; instituting our salvation, in the sacred. Meal that night, Christ the ancient law fulfilling, fills all people with new sight. To our minds these signs disclosing, to our sense must unfold: Bread is broken, Blood outpouring; Christ the mystery, awe unfold! Flesh and Blood to sight revealing; this the story to be told. Undivided is his body, yet Christ gives himself to all. Word made flesh with us abiding, for without him we must fall. Christ the Paschal we are consuming, one in spirit is our call. When the sacred bread is broken, all receive the Christ as one, by his love Christ is transforming, though so many we are one; all the scattered are united, all the lonely welcomed home.     Moisés bajó del monte y contó al pueblo todas estas palabras de Yahvé y todas sus leyes. Contestaron de una sola voz: “Nosotros cumpliremos con todo lo que Yahvé ha dicho.” Y Moisés puso por escrito todas las palabras de Yahvé. Al despuntar el día, Moisés levantó un altar al pie del monte y, al lado del altar, doce piedras por las doce tribus de Israel. Luego mandó algunos jóvenes para que ofrecieran víctimas consumidas por el fuego y sacrificaran novillos como sacrificios de comunión. Moisés tomó la mitad de la sangre y la echó en vasijas; con la otra mitad roció el altar. Después tomó el libro de la Alianza y lo leyó en presencia del pueblo.     Segunda lectura (Hebreos 9: 11–15)
    Una lectura de la carta de San Pablo a los hebreos.
    Cristo, en cambio, vino como el sumo sacerdote que nos consigue los nuevos dones de Dios, y entró en un santuario más noble y más perfecto, no hecho por hombres, es decir, que no es algo creado. Y no fue la sangre de chivos o de novillos la que le abrió el santuario, sino su propia sangre, cuando consiguió de una vez por toda la liberación definitiva. Pues si la sangre de chivos y de toros y la ceniza de ternera, con la que se rocía a los que tienen alguna culpa, les dan tal vez una santidad y pureza externa, con mucha mayor razón la sangre de Cristo, que se ofreció a Dios por el Espíritu eterno como víctima sin mancha, purificará nuestra conciencia de las obras de muerte, para que sirvamos al Dios vivo. Por eso Cristo es el mediador de un nuevo testamento o alianza. Por su muerte fueron redimidas las faltas cometidas bajo el régimen de la primera alianza, y así la promesa se cumple en los que Dios llama para la herencia eterna.

    Evangelio (Marcos 14: 12–16 y 22–26)

    El primer día de la fiesta en que se comía el pan sin levadura y se sacrificaba el cordero de Pascua, los discípulos de Jesús le preguntaron: “¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a prepararte la cena de Pascua?” Entonces envió a dos de sus discípulos, diciéndoles: “Vayan a la ciudad. Allí encontrarán a un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua; síganle, y al amo de la casa donde entre le dicen: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿Cuál es la sala donde he de comer con mis discípulos la cena de Pascua?” Él les mostrará en el piso alto una habitación grande, dispuesta y arreglada. Preparen allí la cena para nosotros. Los discípulos salieron y fueron a la ciudad. Lo encontraron todo como Jesús les había dicho, y prepararon la cena de Pascua. Mientras cenaban, Jesús tomó en sus manos el pan, y habiendo dado gracias a Dios lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciendo: “Tomen, esto es mi cuerpo.” Luego tomó en sus manos una copa, y habiendo dado gracias a Dios se la pasó a ellos, y todos bebieron. Les dijo: “Esto es mi sangre, con la que se confirma el pacto, la cual es derramada en favor de muchos. Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta el día en que beba vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.” Después de cantar los salmos, se fueron al monte de los Olivos.

    • Ako ngayo'y maghahandog ng haing pasasalamat, ang handog kong panalangi'y sa iyo ko ilalagak. Kapag nagsasama-sama ang lahat ng iyong hirang, sa templo sa Jerusalem, ay doon ko ibibigay ang anumang pangako kong sa iyo ay binitiwan. Purihin si Yahweh!

    Pangalawang pagbabasa (Mga Hebreo 9: 11–15)

    Ngunit dumating na si Cristo, ang Pinakapunong Pari ng mabubuting bagay na narito na. At siya'y naglilingkod doon sa sambahang higit na dakila, walang katulad at hindi ginawa ng tao. Ang sambahang ito ay hindi sa sanlibutang ito. Minsan lamang pumasok si Cristo sa Dakong Kabanal-banalan, at iyo'y sapat na. Hindi dugo ng mga kambing at guya ang kanyang inihandog, kundi ang sarili niyang dugo, para mapatawad tayo sa ating mga kasalanan magpakailanman. Kung ang dugo ng mga kambing at toro, at ang abo ng dumalagang baka ang iwiniwisik sa mga taong itinuturing na marumi upang sila'y luminis ayon sa Kautusan, higit ang nagagawa ng dugo ni Cristo! Sa pamamagitan ng walang hanggang Espiritu, inialay niya sa Diyos ang kanyang sarili bilang handog na walang kapintasan. Ang kanyang dugo ang lumilinis sa ating puso't isipan sa mga gawaing walang kabuluhan upang tayo'y makapaglingkod sa Diyos na buhay. Kaya nga, si Cristo ang tagapamagitan ng bagong kasunduan. Sa pamamagitan ng kanyang kamatayan, ipinatawad ang paglabag ng mga tao noong sila'y nasa ilalim pa ng naunang kasunduan. Dahil dito, makakamtan ng mga tinawag ng Diyos ang walang hanggang pagpapala na kanyang ipinangako.

      Unang araw noon ng Pista ng Tinapay na Walang Pampaalsa, araw ng paghahain ng korderong pampaskwa. Tinanong si Jesus ng kanyang mga alagad, "Saan po ninyo nais na maghanda kami ng hapunang pampaskwa?" Inutusan niya ang dalawa sa kanyang mga alagad, "Pumunta kayo sa bayan at may masasalubong kayong isang lalaking may dalang banga ng tubig. Sundan ninyo siya sa bahay na kanyang papasukan at sabihin ninyo sa may-ari, 'Ipinapatanong po ng Guro kung mayroon kayong silid na maaaring magamit niya at ng kanyang mga alagad para sa hapunang pampaskwa.' At ituturo niya sa inyo ang isang malaking silid sa itaas na mayroon nang kagamitan. Doon kayo maghanda para sa atin." Nagpunta nga sa bayan ang mga alagad at natagpuan nila roon ang lahat, gaya ng sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila. At inihanda nila ang hapunang pampaskwa. Habang kumakain sila, si Jesus ay dumampot ng tinapay at nagpasalamat sa Diyos. Pagkatapos, kanyang pinaghati-hati ang tinapay at iniabot sa mga alagad. Sinabi niya, "Kunin ninyo ito; ito ang aking katawan." Dumampot din siya ng kopa at matapos magpasalamat sa Diyos ay iniabot din niya iyon sa mga alagad, at uminom silang lahat. Sinabi niya, "Ito ang aking dugo; pinapagtibay nito ang tipan ng Diyos. Ang aking dugo ay mabubuhos para sa marami.     Let us pray. O God, who in this wonderful sacrament have left us a memorial of your passion, grant us, we pray, so to revere the sacred mysteries of your body and blood that we may always experience in ourselves the fruit of your redemption. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Kemudian disuruhnyalah orang-orang muda dari bangsa Israel, maka mereka mempersembahkan korban bakaran dan menyembelih lembu-lembu jantan sebagai korban keselamatan kepada TUHAN. Sesudah itu Musa mengambil sebagian dari darah itu, lalu ditaruhnya ke dalam pasu, sebagian lagi dari darah itu disiramkannya pada mezbah itu.       Tetapi Kristus telah datang sebagai Imam Besar untuk hal-hal yang baik yang akan datang: Ia telah melintasi kemah yang lebih besar dan yang lebih sempurna, yang bukan dibuat oleh tangan manusia, — artinya yang tidak termasuk ciptaan ini, —dan Ia telah masuk satu kali untuk selama-lamanya ke dalam tempat yang kudus bukan dengan membawa darah domba jantan dan darah anak lembu, tetapi dengan membawa darah-Nya sendiri. Dan dengan itu Ia telah mendapat kelepasan yang kekal. Sebab, jika darah domba jantan dan darah lembu jantan dan percikan abu lembu muda menguduskan mereka yang najis, sehingga mereka disucikan secara lahiriah, betapa lebihnya darah Kristus, yang oleh Roh yang kekal telah mempersembahkan diri-Nya sendiri kepada Allah sebagai persembahan yang tak bercacat, akan menyucikan hati nurani kita dari perbuatan-perbuatan yang sia-sia, supaya kita dapat beribadah kepada Allah yang hidup. Karena itu Ia adalah Pengantara dari suatu perjanjian yang baru, supaya mereka yang telah terpanggil dapat menerima bagian kekal yang dijanjikan, sebab Ia telah mati untuk menebus pelanggaran-pelanggaran yang telah dilakukan selama perjanjian yang pertama.

      Pada hari pertama dari hari raya Roti Tidak Beragi, pada waktu orang menyembelih domba Paskah, murid-murid Yesus berkata kepada-Nya: "Ke tempat mana Engkau kehendaki kami pergi untuk mempersiapkan perjamuan Paskah bagi-Mu?" Lalu Ia menyuruh dua orang murid-Nya dengan pesan: "Pergilah ke kota; di sana kamu akan bertemu dengan seorang yang membawa kendi berisi air. Ikutilah dia dan katakanlah kepada pemilik rumah yang dimasukinya: Pesan Guru: di manakah ruangan yang disediakan bagi-Ku untuk makan Paskah bersama-sama dengan murid-murid-Ku? Lalu orang itu akan menunjukkan kamu sebuah ruangan atas yang besar, yang sudah lengkap dan tersedia. Di situlah kamu harus mempersiapkan perjamuan Paskah untuk kita!" Maka berangkatlah kedua murid itu dan setibanya di kota, didapati mereka semua seperti yang dikatakan Yesus kepada mereka. Lalu mereka mempersiapkan Paskah. Dan ketika Yesus dan murid-murid-Nya sedang makan, Yesus mengambil roti, mengucap berkat, memecah-mecahkannya lalu memberikannya kepada mereka dan berkata: "Ambillah, inilah tubuh-Ku." Sesudah itu Ia mengambil cawan, mengucap syukur lalu memberikannya kepada mereka, dan mereka semuanya minum dari cawan itu. Dan Ia berkata kepada mereka: "Inilah darah-Ku, darah perjanjian, yang ditumpahkan bagi banyak orang. Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya Aku tidak akan minum lagi hasil pokok anggur sampai pada hari Aku meminumnya, yaitu yang baru, dalam Kerajaan Allah." Sesudah mereka menyanyikan nyanyian pujian, pergilah mereka ke Bukit Zaitun.

    キリストは、すでに私たちのものとなった、すぐれた制度の大祭司として来られました。そして、人間やこの世の手を借りる必要のない、さらに偉大で完全な、天の幕屋に入られました。しかも、ただ一度、血を携えて至聖所に入り、それを「恵みの座」にふりかけました。それはやぎや子牛の血ではなく、ご自分の血でした。キリストは自らそうすることによって、私たちの永遠の救いとなる贖い(身代わりによって罪を赦し、救い出すこと)を成し遂げられたのです。古い制度のもとで、雄牛ややぎの血、あるいは若い雌牛の灰が、人々の体を罪からきよめることができるとすれば、ましてキリストの血は、どれほど確実に私たちの心と生活を変えることでしょう。キリストご自身のささげられた血は、古い規則に縛られる悩みから私たちを解放し、生ける神にお仕えしたい気持ちに駆り立てるのです。それは、一つの罪も欠点もない完全なお方が、聖霊の助けによってご自分を喜んで神にささげ、私たちの罪のために死んでくださったからです。キリストは、この新しい契約を携えて来られました。それで、神に招かれる人はみな、約束されたすばらしい祝福にいつまでもあずかることができるのです。なぜなら、古い制度のもとで犯した罪の刑罰から救い出すために、キリストは死んでくださったからです。

  9. Prima lettura (Esodo 24: 3–8)
    Una lettura dal libro dell’Esodo.
    Mosè andò a riferire al popolo tutte le parole del Signore e tutte le norme. Tutto il popolo rispose insieme e disse: “Tutti i comandi che ha dati il Signore, noi li eseguiremo!” Mosè scrisse tutte le parole del Signore, poi si alzò di buon mattino e costruì un altare ai piedi del monte, con dodici stele per le dodici tribù d'Israele. Incaricò alcuni giovani tra gli Israeliti di offrire olocausti e di sacrificare giovenchi come sacrifici di comunione, per il Signore. Mosè prese la metà del sangue e la mise in tanti catini e ne versò l'altra metà sull'altare. Quindi prese il libro dell'alleanza e lo lesse alla presenza del popolo. Dissero: “Quanto il Signore ha ordinato, noi lo faremo e lo eseguiremo!” Allora Mosè prese il sangue e ne asperse il popolo, dicendo: “Ecco il sangue dell'alleanza, che il Signore ha concluso con voi sulla base di tutte queste parole!”

    Seconda lettura (Ebrei 9: 11–15)
    Una lettura della lettera di San Paolo agli Ebrei.
    Cristo invece, venuto come sommo sacerdote di beni futuri, attraverso una Tenda più grande e più perfetta, non costruita da mano di uomo, cioè non appartenente a questa creazione, non con sangue di capri e di vitelli, ma con il proprio sangue entrò una volta per sempre nel santuario, procurandoci così una redenzione eterna. Infatti, se il sangue dei capri e dei vitelli e la cenere di una giovenca, sparsi su quelli che sono contaminati, li santificano, purificandoli nella carne, quanto più il sangue di Cristo, che con uno Spirito eterno offrì se stesso senza macchia a Dio, purificherà la nostra coscienza dalla opere morte, per servire il Dio vivente? Per questo egli è mediatore di una nuova alleanza, perché, essendo ormai intervenuta la sua morte per la rendenzione delle colpe commesse sotto la prima alleanza, coloro che sono stati chiamati ricevano l'eredità eterna che è stata promessa.

    Vangelo (Marco 14: 12–16 e 22–26)

    Il primo giorno degli Azzimi, quando si immolava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: “Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?” Allora mandò due dei suoi discepoli dicendo loro: “Andate in città e vi verrà incontro un uomo con una brocca d'acqua; seguitelo e là dove entrerà dite al padrone di casa: Il Maestro dice: Dov'è la mia stanza, perché io vi possa mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli? Egli vi mostrerà al piano superiore una grande sala con i tappeti, gia pronta; là preparate per noi.” I discepoli andarono e, entrati in città, trovarono come aveva detto loro e prepararono per la Pasqua. Mentre mangiavano prese il pane e, pronunziata la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede loro, dicendo: “Prendete, questo è il mio corpo.” Poi prese il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro e ne bevvero tutti. E disse: “Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue dell'alleanza versato per molti. In verità vi dico che io non berrò più del frutto della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio.” E dopo aver cantato l'inno, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.
