Elijah went a day's journey into the desert, until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death saying: "This is enough, O LORD! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers." He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.
Second reading (Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven," and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

He got up, ate, drank, and on the strength of that food, Elijah traveled for forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.
Second reading (Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Do not sadden the Holy Spirit of God which you were marked with. It will be your distinctive mark on the day of salvation. Do away with all quarreling, rage, anger, insults, and every kind of malice: be good and understanding, mutually forgiving one another as God forgave you in Christ. As most beloved children of God, strive to imitate him. Follow the ways of love, the example of Christ who loved you. He gave himself up for us and became the offering and sacrificial victim whose fragrance rises to God.

The Jews discussed with themselves because Jesus stated, "I am the bread which comes from heaven." And they stated, "This man is the son of Joseph, is he not? We know his father and mother, but how can he say that he has come down from heaven?" Jesus answered them, "Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to me unless he is drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise him up on the last day. It has been written in the Prophets: They shall be taught by God. So whoever listens and learns from the Father comes to me. For no one has seen the Father except the One who comes from God; he has seen the Father. Truly, I say to you, whoever believes, has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Though your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, they died. But here you have the bread which comes from heaven so that you may eat it and not die. I am the living bread which has come from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.
Glorify the LORD with me. Let us together extol his name. I sought the LORD, he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Look to him that you may be radiant with joy. And your faces may not blush with shame. When the afflicted man called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him.
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him.

Segunda lectura (Efesios 4:30 – 5:2)

No entristezcan al Espíritu Santo de Dios, que los ha marcado con un sello para el día de la redención. No profieran palabras inconvenientes; al contrario, que sus palabras sean siempre buenas, para que resulten edificantes cuando sea necesario y hagan bien a aquellos que las escuchan. Eviten la amargura, los arrebatos, la ira, los gritos, los insultos y toda clase de maldad. Por el contrario, sean mutuamente buenos y compasivos, perdonándose los unos a los otros como Dios los ha perdonado en Cristo. Traten de imitar a Dios, como hijos suyos muy queridos. Practiquen el amor, a ejemplo de Cristo, que nos amó y se entregó por nosotros, como ofrenda y sacrificio agradable a Dios.

• Sa lahat ng pagkakataon si Yahweh ay aking pupurihin; pagpupuri ko sa kanya'y hindi ko papatigilin. Aking pupurihin kanyang mga gawa, kayong naaapi, makinig, matuwa!
• Ang kadakilaan niya ay ihayag, at ang ngalan niya'y purihin ng lahat! Ang aking dalangi'y dininig ng Diyos, inalis niya sa akin ang lahat kong takot.

Sa halip, maging mabait kayo at maawain; magpatawad kayo sa isa't isa tulad ng pagpapatawad sa inyo ng Diyos dahil kay Cristo. Dahil kayo'y mga anak na minamahal ng Diyos, tularan ninyo siya. Tetapi ia sendiri masuk ke padang gurun sehari perjalanan jauhnya, lalu duduk di bawah sebuah pohon yang rindang. Kemudian ia ingin mati, katanya: "Cukuplah itu! Sekarang, ya TUHAN, ambillah nyawaku, sebab aku ini tidak lebih baik dari pada nenek moyangku." Sesudah itu ia berbaring dan tidur di bawah pohon yang rindang itu. Tetapi tiba-tiba seorang malaikat menyentuh dia serta berkata kepadanya: "Bangunlah, makanlah!" Ketika ia melihat sekitarnya, maka pada sebelah kepalanya ada roti bakar, dan sebuah kendi berisi air. Lalu ia makan dan minum, kemudian berbaring pula. Tetapi malaikat TUHAN datang untuk kedua kalinya dan menyentuh dia serta berkata: "Bangunlah, makanlah! Sebab kalau tidak, perjalananmu nanti terlalu jauh bagimu." Mazmur (Mazmur 34) (Ayat 2–9)
Tanggapan adalah: Kecaplah dan lihatlah, betapa baiknya Tuhan!
• Aku hendak memuji TUHAN pada segala waktu; puji-pujian kepada-Nya tetap di dalam mulutku. Karena TUHAN jiwaku bermegah; biarlah orang-orang yang rendah hati mendengarnya dan bersukacita.
• Muliakanlah TUHAN bersama-sama dengan aku, marilah kita bersama-sama memasyhurkan nama-Nya! Aku telah mencari TUHAN, lalu Ia menjawab aku, dan melepaskan aku dari segala kegentaranku.
• Tujukanlah pandanganmu kepada-Nya, maka mukamu akan berseri-seri, dan tidak akan malu tersipu-sipu. Orang yang tertindas ini berseru, dan TUHAN mendengar; Ia menyelamatkan dia dari segala kesesakannya.
• Malaikat TUHAN berkemah di sekeliling orang-orang yang takut akan Dia, lalu meluputkan mereka. Kecaplah dan lihatlah, betapa baiknya TUHAN itu! Berbahagialah orang yang berlindung pada-Nya!
Bacaan Kedua (Efesus 4:30 – 5:2)

Janganlah kamu mendukakan Roh Kudus Allah, yang telah memeteraikan kamu menjelang hari penyelamatan. Segala kepahitan, kegeraman, kemarahan, pertikaian dan fitnah hendaklah dibuang dari antara kamu, demikian pula segala kejahatan. Tetapi hendaklah kamu ramah seorang terhadap yang lain, penuh kasih mesra dan saling mengampuni, sebagaimana Allah di dalam Kristus telah mengampuni kamu. Sebab itu jadilah penurut-penurut Allah, seperti anak-anak yang kekasih dan hiduplah di dalam kasih, sebagaimana Kristus Yesus juga telah mengasihi kamu dan telah menyerahkan diri-Nya untuk kita sebagai persembahan dan korban yang harum bagi Allah.

Ada tertulis dalam kitab nabi-nabi: Dan mereka semua akan diajar oleh Allah. Dan setiap orang, yang telah mendengar dan menerima pengajaran dari Bapa, datang kepada-Ku. Hal itu tidak berarti, bahwa ada orang yang telah melihat Bapa. Hanya Dia yang datang dari Allah, Dialah yang telah melihat Bapa. Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya barangsiapa percaya, ia mempunyai hidup yang kekal. Akulah roti hidup. Nenek moyangmu telah makan manna di padang gurun dan mereka telah mati. Inilah roti yang turun dari surga: Barangsiapa makan dari padanya, ia tidak akan mati. Akulah roti hidup yang telah turun dari surga. Jikalau seorang makan dari roti ini, ia akan hidup selama-lamanya, dan roti yang Kuberikan itu ialah daging-Ku, yang akan Kuberikan untuk hidup dunia."

一人で荒野へ入って行きました。彼は一日中歩き続けてくたくたになり、えにしだの木の下に座り込むと、死を願って主に祈りました。「主よ、もうたくさんです。私のいのちを取ってください。いずれ死ぬのですから。」そのまま木の下で横になって眠り込むと、御使いが来て彼にさわり、起きて食事をするように言いました。見ると、石で焼いたパンと水の入ったつぼがあります。エリヤはパンを食べ、水を飲んでから、また横になりました。すると、再び御使いが現れて彼にさわり、「起きて、もっと食べなさい。先はまだまだ長いのだから」と言いました。そこでエリヤは起きて食べ、水を飲みました。この食事で元気を取り戻したエリヤは、四十日四十夜、旅を続けて神の山ホレブ（シナイ山）に着きました。
第二読み物（エペソ人第4章：第30詩–第5章：第2詩）
この読み物はエペソ人への手紙です。
聖霊を悲しませるような生き方をしてはいけません。この聖霊は、罪からの救いが完成する日のために、救いの確かな証印を押してくださる方であることを忘れてはなりません。無慈悲、憤り、怒りなどを捨てなさい。とげのあることばやえこひいきをなくしなさい。むしろ、互いに親切にし、心のやさしい人になりなさい。そして、神がキリストにあってあなた方を赦してくださったように、互いに赦し合いなさい。子供が、かわいがってくれる父親を見ならうように、何をするにも神を模範としなさい。思いやりに満ちあふれた者となりなさい。キリストの愛は、あなた方の罪を取り除くために、ご自身をいけにえとして神にささげるほど深かったのです。このキリストの愛の香ばしいかおりを、神はお喜びになったのです。

ユダヤ人たちはイエスが、「わたしは天から下って来たパンです」とはっきり言われたので、ぶつぶつ文句を言い始めました。「たかがヨセフの息子イエスではないか。父親も母親もよく知っている。なのに『わたしは天から下って来た』などと、とんでもないことを言って」と、彼らはつぶやきました。そこで、イエスはお答えになりました。「わたしの言ったことで文句を言い合うのはやめなさい。わたしをお遣わしになった父が引き寄せてくださらない限り、だれもわたしのところへは来られません。わたしのところに来る者を一人残らず、わたしは終わりの日に復活させるのです。聖書には、『彼らはみな神によって教えられる』と書いてあります。父の語ることばを聞き、父から真理を学んだ人たちは、わたしのところへ来ます。実際に父を見た者は一人もいません。ただわたしだけが、この目で父を見たのです。よく言っておきます。わたしを信じている人はだれでも、すでに永遠のいのちを得ているのです。わたしがいのちのパンなのです。あなた方の先祖は、荒野で、空から降って来たパンを食べましたが、結局はみな死んでしまいました。けれども、天から下って来たパンは違います。それを食べる人は永遠のいのちをいただくのです。わたしが、その天から下って来たいのちのパンなのです。このパンを食べる人はだれでも永遠に生きます。このパンは、人類の救いのためにささげるわたしの体なのです。」

彼自身は荒れ野に入り、更に一日の道のりを歩き続けた。彼は一本のえにしだの木の下に来て座り、自分の命が絶えるのを願って言った。「主よ、もう十分です。わたしの命を取ってください。わたしは先祖にまさる者ではありません。」彼はえにしだの木の下で横になって眠ってしまった。御使いが彼に触れて言った。「起きて食べよ。」見ると、枕もとに焼き石で焼いたパン菓子と水の入った瓶があったので、エリヤはそのパン菓子を食べ、水を飲んで、また横になった。主の御使いはもう一度戻って来てエリヤに触れ、「起きて食べよ。この旅は長く、あなたには耐え難いからだ」と言った。エリヤは起きて食べ、飲んだ。その食べ物に力づけられた彼は、四十日四十夜歩き続け、ついに神の山ホレブに着いた。
第二読み物（エフェソの信徒第4章：第30詩–第5章：第2詩）
この読み物はエフェソの信徒への手紙です。
神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけません。あなた方は、聖霊により、贖いの日に対して保証されているのです。無慈悲、憤り、怒り、わめき、そしりなどすべてを、一切の悪意と一緒に捨てなさい。互いに親切にし、憐れみの心で接し、神がキリストによってあなた方を赦してくださったように、赦し合いなさい。あなた方は神に愛されている子供ですから、神に倣う者となりなさい。キリストがわたしたちを愛して、御自分を香りのよい供え物、つまり、いけにえとしてわたしたちのために神に献げてくださったように、あなた方も愛によって歩みなさい。

ユダヤ人たちは、イエスが「わたしは天から降って来たパンである」と言われたので、イエスのことでつぶやき始め、こう言った。「これはヨセフの息子のイエスではないか。我々はその父も母も知っている。どうして今、『わたしは天から降って来た』などと言うのか。」イエスは答えて言われた。「つぶやき合うのはやめなさい。わたしをお遣わしになった父が引き寄せてくださらなければ、だれもわたしのもとへ来ることはできない。わたしはその人を終わりの日に復活させる。預言者の書に、『彼らは皆、神によって教えられる』と書いてある。父から聞いて学んだ者は皆、わたしのもとに来る。父を見た者は一人もいない。神のもとから来た者だけが父を見たのである。はっきり言っておく。信じる者は永遠の命を得ている。わたしは命のパンである。あなたたちの先祖は荒れ野でマンナを食べたが、死んでしまった。しかし、これは、天から降って来たパンであり、これを食べる者は死なない。わたしは、天から降って来た生きたパンである。このパンを食べるならば、その人は永遠に生きる。わたしが与えるパンとは、世を生かすためのわたしの肉のことである。」
Prima lettura (1 Re 19: 4–8)

Egli si inoltrò nel deserto una giornata di cammino e andò a sedersi sotto un ginepro. Desideroso di morire, disse: “Ora basta, Signore! Prendi la mia vita, perché io non sono migliore dei miei padri.” Si coricò e si addormentò sotto il ginepro. Allora, ecco un angelo lo toccò e gli disse: “Alzati e mangia!” Egli guardò e vide vicino alla sua testa una focaccia cotta su pietre roventi e un orcio d'acqua. Mangiò e bevve, quindi tornò a coricarsi. Venne di nuovo l'angelo del Signore, lo toccò e gli disse: “Su mangia, perché è troppo lungo per te il cammino.” Si alzò, mangiò e bevve. Con la forza datagli da quel cibo, camminò per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti fino al monte di Dio, l'Oreb.
Seconda lettura (Efesini 4:30 – 5:2)
Una lettura della lettera di San Paolo agli Efesini.
E non vogliate rattristare lo Spirito Santo di Dio, col quale foste segnati per il giorno della redenzione. Scompaia da voi ogni asprezza, sdegno, ira, clamore e maldicenza con ogni sorta di malignità. Siate invece benevoli gli uni verso gli altri, misericordiosi, perdonandovi a vicenda come Dio ha perdonato a voi in Cristo. Fatevi dunque imitatori di Dio, quali figli carissimi, e camminate nella carità, nel modo che anche Cristo vi ha amato e ha dato se stesso per noi, offrendosi a Dio in sacrificio di soave odore.
Vangelo (Giovanni 6: 41–51)

Intanto i Giudei mormoravano di lui perché aveva detto: “Io sono il pane disceso dal cielo.” E dicevano: “Costui non è forse Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe? Di lui conosciamo il padre e la madre. Come può dunque dire: Sono disceso dal cielo?” Gesù rispose: “Non mormorate tra di voi. Nessuno può venire a me, se non lo attira il Padre che mi ha mandato; e io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno. Sta scritto nei profeti: E tutti saranno ammaestrati da Dio. Chiunque ha udito il Padre e ha imparato da lui, viene a me. Non che alcuno abbia visto il Padre, ma solo colui che viene da Dio ha visto il Padre. In verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede ha la vita eterna. Io sono il pane della vita. I vostri padri hanno mangiato la manna nel deserto e sono morti; questo è il pane che discende dal cielo, perché chi ne mangia non muoia. Io sono il pane vivo, disceso dal cielo. Se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno e il pane che io darò è la mia carne per la vita del mondo.”
