First reading (Exodus 16: 2–4 and 12–15)
A reading from the book of Exodus.
The whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, "Would that we had died at the LORD's hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine!" Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. "I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread, so that you may know that I, the LORD, am your God." In the evening quail came up and covered the camp. In the morning a dew lay all about the camp, and when the dew evaporated, there on the surface of the desert were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground. On seeing it, the Israelites asked one another, "What is this?" for they did not know what it was. But Moses told them, "This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat."
Second reading (Ephesians 4: 17 and 20–24)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; that is not how you learned Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, that you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth.

So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." So they said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat." So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." In the desert, the whole Israelite community groaned against Moses and Aaron and stated to them, "If only we had died by the sand of the Lord in Egypt when we sat down to caldrons of meat and ate all the bread we wanted, whereas you have brought us to this desert to let the whole assembly die of starvation!" The Lord then stated to Moses, "Now I am going to rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to gather what is needed for that day. In this way, I will test them to save if they will follow my Teaching or not. I have heard the complaints of Israel. Speak to them and say: Between the two evenings you will eat meat, and in the morning you will have bread to your heart's content; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God!" In the evening, quails came up and covered the camp. In the morning, dew had fallen around the camp. When the dew lifted, there was on the surface of the desert a thin crust like hoarfrost. The people of Israel upon seeing it starting asking each other, "What is that?" for they did not know what it was. Moses told them, "It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat."
Second reading (Ephesians 4: 17 and 20–24)

Brothers and sisters: I say to you, then, and with insistence, I advise you in the Lord: do not imitate the pagans who live an aimless kind of life. But it is not for this that you have followed Christ. For I suppose that you have heard of him and received his teaching which is seen in Jesus himself. You must give up your former way of living, the old self, whose deceitful desires bring self-destruction. Renew yourselves spiritually, from inside and put on the new self, or self-according to God, which is created in true righteousness and holiness.
Gospel (John 6: 24–35)

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they embarked on boats and went to Capernaum searching for Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Master, when did you come here?" Jesus answered, "Truly, I say to you, you look for me, not because you have seen through the signs, but because you ate bread and were satisfied. Work then, not for perishable food, but for the lasting food which grants you eternal life. The Son of Man will give it to you, for he is the one the Father has marked." Then the Jews asked Jesus, "What should we do? What are the works that God anticipates us to do?" Jesus answered them, "The work God anticipates is this: that you believe in the One whom God has sent." They then stated, "Demonstrate us miraculous signs, that we may see and believe you. What sign do you perform? Well, our ancestors ate manna in the desert; as the Scripture states: They were given bread from heaven to eat." Jesus then replied to them, "Truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. The bread God gives is the One who comes from heaven and gives life to the world." the Jews replied to Jesus, "Give us this bread consistently." Jesus explained to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall never be hungry, and whoever believes in me shall never be thirsty."

What we have heard and know, and what our fathers have declared to us, we will declare to the generation to come the glorious deeds of the LORD and his strength and the wonders that he wrought.
He commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven; he rained manna upon them for food and gave them heavenly bread.
Man ate the bread of angels, food he sent them in abundance. And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountains his right hand had won.

Toda la comunidad de los israelitas empezó a murmurar contra Moisés y Aarón en el desierto. Les decían: “¡Ojalá Yahvé nos hubiera hecho morir en Egipto! Allí nos sentábamos junto a las ollas de carne y comíamos pan en abundancia. Ustedes, en cambio, nos han traído a este desierto en que todo ese gentío morirá de hambre.” Pero Yahvé dijo a Moisés: “Ahora les hago llover pan del cielo; salga el pueblo y recoja lo que necesita para cada día. Yo lo voy a probar, a ver si guarda mi ley o no... He oído las quejas de mi pueblo. Diles: por la tarde comerán carne y por la mañana se saciarán de pan; así sabrán que yo soy Yahvé, el Dios de ustedes.” Aquella misma tarde llegaron codornices, que cubrieron el campamento. Y, por la mañana, en torno al campamento, había una capa de rocío. Al evaporarse el rocío, apareció sobre el suelo del desierto una cosa menuda, como granos, parecida a la escarcha. Cuando los israelitas vieron esto, se dijeron unos a otros: “Maná”, o sea: “¿Qué es esto?” Pues no sabían lo que era. Y Moisés les dijo: “Este es el pan que Yahvé les da para comer."
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 78) (Versículos 3–4, 23–25 y 54)
La respuesta es: El Señor les dio el pan del cielo.
• Lo que hemos oído y aprendido, lo que nos contaron nuestros padres, no queremos ocultarlo a nuestros hijos, lo narraremos a la próxima generación: son las glorias del Señor y su poder, las maravillas que él realizó.
• Entonces mandó a las nubes en lo alto y abrió las compuertas del cielo: hizo llover sobre ellos el maná, les dio como alimento un trigo celestial.
• Todos comieron en pan de ángeles, les dio comida hasta saciarlos. Los llevó hasta su Tierra santa, hasta la Montaña que adquirió con su mano.
Segunda lectura (Efesios 4: 17 y 20–24)

Les digo y les recomiendo en nombre del Señor: no procedan como los paganos, que se dejan llevar por la frivolidad de sus pensamientos. Pero no es eso lo que ustedes aprendieron de Cristo, si es que de veras oyeron predicar de él y fueron enseñados según la verdad que reside en Jesús. De él aprendieron que es preciso renunciar a la vida que llevaban, despojándose del hombre viejo, que se va corrompiendo por la seducción de la concupiscencia, para renovarse en lo más íntimo de su espíritu y revestirse del hombre nuevo, creado a imagen de Dios en la justicia y en la verdadera santidad.

Cuando la multitud se dio cuenta de que Jesús y sus discípulos no estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y fueron a Cafarnaúm en busca de Jesús. Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla, le preguntaron: “Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste?” Jesús les respondió: “Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan, no porque vieron signos, sino porque han comido pan hasta saciarse. Trabajen, no por el alimento perecedero, sino por el que permanece hasta la Vida eterna, el que les dará el Hijo del hombre; porque es él a quien Dios, el Padre, marcó con su sello.” Ellos le preguntaron: “¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras de Dios?” Jesús les respondió: “La obra de Dios es que ustedes crean en aquel que él ha enviado.” Y volvieron a preguntarle: “¿Qué signos haces para que veamos y creamos en ti? ¿Qué obra realizas? Sebab kamu membawa kami keluar ke padang gurun ini untuk membunuh seluruh jemaah ini dengan kelaparan." Lalu berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Musa: "Sesungguhnya Aku akan menurunkan dari langit hujan roti bagimu; maka bangsa itu akan keluar dan memungut tiap-tiap hari sebanyak yang perlu untuk sehari, supaya mereka Kucoba, apakah mereka hidup menurut hukum-Ku atau tidak. "Aku telah mendengar sungut-sungut orang Israel; katakanlah kepada mereka: Pada waktu senja kamu akan makan daging dan pada waktu pagi kamu akan kenyang makan roti; maka kamu akan mengetahui, bahwa Akulah TUHAN, Allahmu." Pada waktu petang datanglah berduyun-duyun burung puyuh yang menutupi perkemahan itu; dan pada waktu pagi terletaklah embun sekeliling perkemahan itu. Ketika embun itu telah menguap, tampaklah pada permukaan padang gurun sesuatu yang halus, sesuatu yang seperti sisik, halus seperti embun beku di bumi. Ketika orang Israel melihatnya, berkatalah mereka seorang kepada yang lain: "Apakah ini?" Sebab mereka tidak tahu apa itu. Tetapi Musa berkata kepada mereka: "Inilah roti yang diberikan TUHAN kepadamu menjadi makananmu."

Kamu telah belajar mengenal Kristus. Karena kamu telah mendengar tentang Dia dan menerima pengajaran di dalam Dia menurut kebenaran yang nyata dalam Yesus, yaitu bahwa kamu, berhubung dengan kehidupan kamu yang dahulu, harus menanggalkan manusia lama, yang menemui kebinasaannya oleh nafsunya yang menyesatkan, supaya kamu dibaharui di dalam roh dan pikiranmu, dan mengenakan manusia baru, yang telah diciptakan menurut kehendak Allah di dalam kebenaran dan kekudusan yang sesungguhnya.

Bekerjalah, bukan untuk makanan yang akan dapat binasa, melainkan untuk makanan yang bertahan sampai kepada hidup yang kekal, yang akan diberikan Anak Manusia kepadamu; sebab Dialah yang disahkan oleh Bapa, Allah, dengan meterai-Nya." Lalu kata mereka kepada-Nya: "Apakah yang harus kami perbuat, supaya kami mengerjakan pekerjaan yang dikehendaki Allah?" Jawab Yesus kepada mereka: "Inilah pekerjaan yang dikehendaki Allah, yaitu hendaklah kamu percaya kepada Dia yang telah diutus Allah." Maka kata mereka kepada-Nya: "Tanda apakah yang Engkau perbuat, supaya dapat kami melihatnya dan percaya kepada-Mu? Pekerjaan apakah yang Engkau lakukan? Nenek moyang kami telah makan manna di padang gurun, seperti ada tertulis: Mereka diberi-Nya makan roti dari sorga." Maka kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Aku berkata kepadamu, sesungguhnya bukan Musa yang memberikan kamu roti dari sorga, melainkan Bapa-Ku yang memberikan kamu roti yang benar dari sorga. Karena roti yang dari Allah ialah roti yang turun dari sorga dan yang memberi hidup kepada dunia." Maka kata mereka kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, berikanlah kami roti itu senantiasa." Kata Yesus kepada mereka: "Akulah roti hidup; barangsiapa datang kepada-Ku, ia tidak akan lapar lagi, dan barangsiapa percaya kepada-Ku, ia tidak akan haus lagi."

そこで私は、主にあって、このことを言わせていただきます。もうこれから先、救われていない人のようにむなしい生き方をしてはなりません。しかし、キリストが教えてくださった生き方は、全く違います。もしあなたがたが、ほんとうにキリストの声を聞き、キリストについて真理を学んでいるなら、古い邪悪な性質を捨て去りなさい。古い性質とは、以前のあなたがたのように肉欲に惑わされ、滅んでいくような生き方です。あなたがたの態度や考えを一新しなければなりません。あなたがたは、神にかたどって造られた新しい人になるように、新しい性質を身にまといなさい。

Nel deserto tutta la comunità degli Israeliti mormorò contro Mosè e contro Aronne. Gli Israeliti dissero loro: “Fossimo morti per mano del Signore nel paese d'Egitto, quando eravamo seduti presso la pentola della carne, mangiando pane a sazietà! Invece ci avete fatti uscire in questo deserto per far morire di fame tutta questa moltitudine.” Allora il Signore disse a Mosè: “Ecco, io sto per far piovere pane dal cielo per voi: il popolo uscirà a raccoglierne ogni giorno la razione di un giorno, perché io lo metta alla prova, per vedere se cammina secondo la mia legge o no. Ho inteso la mormorazione degli Israeliti. Parla loro così: Al tramonto mangerete carne e alla mattina vi sazierete di pane; saprete che io sono il Signore vostro Dio.” Ora alla sera le quaglie salirono e coprirono l'accampamento; al mattino vi era uno strato di rugiada intorno all'accampamento. Poi lo strato di rugiada svanì ed ecco sulla superficie del deserto vi era una cosa minuta e granulosa, minuta come è la brina sulla terra. Gli Israeliti la videro e si dissero l'un l'altro: “Man hu: che cos'è?”, perché non sapevano che cosa fosse. Mosè disse loro: “E' il pane che il Signore vi ha dato in cibo.”
Seconda lettura (Efesini 4: 17 e 20–24)
Una lettura della lettera di San Paolo agli Efesini.
Vi dico dunque e vi scongiuro nel Signore: non comportatevi più come i pagani nella vanità della loro mente, Ma voi non così avete imparato a conoscere Cristo, se proprio gli avete dato ascolto e in lui siete stati istruiti, secondo la verità che è in Gesù, per la quale dovete deporre l'uomo vecchio con la condotta di prima, l'uomo che si corrompe dietro le passioni ingannatrici e dovete rinnovarvi nello spirito della vostra mente e rivestire l'uomo nuovo, creato secondo Dio nella giustizia e nella santità vera.

Quando dunque la folla vide che Gesù non era più là e nemmeno i suoi discepoli, salì sulle barche e si diresse alla volta di Cafarnao alla ricerca di Gesù. Trovatolo di là dal mare, gli dissero: “Rabbì, quando sei venuto qua?” Gesù rispose: “In verità, in verità vi dico, voi mi cercate non perché avete visto dei segni, ma perché avete mangiato di quei pani e vi siete saziati. Procuratevi non il cibo che perisce, ma quello che dura per la vita eterna, e che il Figlio dell'uomo vi darà. Perché su di lui il Padre, Dio, ha messo il suo sigillo.” Gli dissero allora: “Che cosa dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?” Gesù rispose: “Questa è l'opera di Dio: credere in colui che egli ha mandato.” Allora gli dissero: “Quale segno dunque tu fai perché vediamo e possiamo crederti? Quale opera compi? I nostri padri hanno mangiato la manna nel deserto, come sta scritto: Diede loro da mangiare un pane dal cielo.” Rispose loro Gesù: “In verità, in verità vi dico: non Mosè vi ha dato il pane dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il pane dal cielo, quello vero; il pane di Dio è colui che discende dal cielo e dà la vita al mondo.” Allora gli dissero: “Signore, dacci sempre questo pane.” Gesù rispose: “Io sono il pane della vita; chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà più sete.”
