First reading (Joshua 24: 1–2a, 15–17, and 18b)
A reading from the book of Joshua.
Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders, their judges, and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people: "If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." But the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."
Second reading (Ephesians 5: 21–32)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: Watch carefully how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
Gospel (John 6: 60–69)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." The people answered, "May God not permit that we ever abandon the Lord to serve other Gods! For it was he who brought us and our ancestors out of Egypt, the house of slavery. It was he who did those great wonders that we have seen; he protected us on the way and through all the land where we passed. Therefore, we shall also serve the Lord, for he is our God!"
Second reading (Ephesians 5: 21–32)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters: Let all kinds of submission to one another become obedience to Christ. So wives to their husbands: as to the Lord. The husband is the head of his wife, as Christ is the head of the Church, his body, of whom he is also the Savior. And as the Church submits to Christ, so let a wife submit in everything to her husband. As for you, husbands love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her. He washed her and made her holy by baptism in the Word. As he wanted a radiant Church without stain or wrinkle or any blemish, but holy and blameless, he himself had to prepare and present her to himself. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies, he who love his wife loves himself. And no one has ever hated his body; he feeds and takes care of it. That is just what Christ does for the Church, because we are a part of his body. The Scripture states: Because of this, a man shall leave his father and mother to be united with his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a very great mystery, and I refer to Christ and the Church.
Gospel (John 6: 60–69)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
After hearing what Jesus and stated before about the bread of life, plenty of Jesus' followers complained, "This language is very difficult; who can accept it?" Jesus was aware that his disciples were discussing and murmuring about this, so he states to them, "Does this offend you? Then how will react when you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh cannot help. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. But among you there are some who do not believe." From the beginning, Jesus knew who would betray him. So he added, "As I have told you, nobody can come to me unless it is granted by the Father." After this, many disciples withdrew and no longer followed him. Jesus asked the Twelve, "Will you also go away?" Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We now believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
Responsorial psalm (Psalm 34) (Verses 2–3 and 16–21)

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.
The LORD has eyes for the just, and ears for their cry. The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
Many are the troubles of the just one, but out of them all the LORD delivers him; he watches over all his bones; not one of them shall be broken.

The eyes of the Lord are fixed on the righteous; his ears are inclined to their cries. But his face is set against the wicked to destroy their memory from the earth.
The Lord hears the cry of the righteous and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the distraught.
Many are the troubles of the just, but the Lord delivers them from all. He keeps all their bones intact, and none of them will be broken.

Josué reunió pues en Siquem a todas las tribus de Israel. Convocó a los ancianos de Israel, a los jefes, a los jueces y a los escribas, y éstos se presentaron ante Dios. Josué dijo entonces a todo el pueblo: “Esto es lo que Yahvé, el Dios de Israel, les manda decir: Sus padres vivían más allá del Río, y servían a otros dioses: Pero si no quieren servir a Yahvé, elijan ahora a quién servirán: o bien a los dioses a los que sus padres sirvieron más allá del Río, o bien a los dioses de los amorreos en el país donde viven. Lo que es yo y mi familia serviremos a Yahvé.” El pueblo respondió: “Por ningún motivo abandonaremos a Yahvé para servir a otros dioses, porque Yahvé, nuestro Dios, fue quien nos hizo subir con nuestros padres desde Egipto, la casa de esclavitud, y nos protegió a lo largo del camino por dónde íbamos, y en medio de todos los pueblos por donde pasábamos. Serviremos pues a Yahvé, ¡él es nuestro Dios!”
Salmo responsorial (Salmo 34) (Versículos 2–3 y 16–21)
La respuesta es: Gusten y vean qué bueno es el Señor.
• Bendeciré al Señor en todo tiempo, su alabanza estará siempre en mis labios. Mi alma se gloría en el Señor; que lo oigan los humildes y se alegren.
• Los ojos del Señor miran al justo y sus oídos escuchan su clamor; pero el Señor rechaza a los que hacen el mal para borrar su recuerdo de la tierra.
• Cuando ellos claman, el Señor los escucha y los libra de todas sus angustias. El Señor está cerca del que sufre y salva a los que están abatidos.
• El justo padece muchos males, pero el Señor lo libra de ellos. El cuida todos sus huesos, no se quebrará ni uno solo.
Segunda lectura (Efesios 5: 21–32)
Una lectura de la carta de San Pablo a los Efesios.
Hermanos y hermanas: Sométanse los unos a los otros, por consideración a Cristo. Las mujeres deben respetar a su marido como al Señor, porque el varón es la cabeza de la mujer, como Cristo es la Cabeza y el Salvador de la Iglesia, que es su Cuerpo. Así como la Iglesia está sometida a Cristo, de la misma manera las mujeres deben respetar en todo a su marido. Maridos, amen a su esposa, como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó por ella, para santificarla. Él la purificó con el bautismo del agua y la palabra, porque quiso para sí una Iglesia resplandeciente, sin mancha ni arruga y sin ningún defecto, sino santa e inmaculada. Del mismo modo, los maridos deben amar a su mujer como a su propio cuerpo. El que ama a su esposa se ama a sí mismo. Nadie menosprecia a su propio cuerpo, sino que lo alimenta y lo cuida. Así hace Cristo por la Iglesia, por nosotros, que somos los miembros de su Cuerpo. Por eso, el hombre dejará a su padre y a su madre para unirse a su mujer, y los dos serán una sola carne. Este es un gran misterio: y yo digo que se refiere a Cristo y a la Iglesia.
Evangelio (Juan 6: 60–69)
Una lectura del Evangelio Santo según San Juan.
Después de oírlo, muchos de sus discípulos decían: “¡Es duro este lenguaje! ¿Quién puede escucharlo?” Jesús, sabiendo lo que sus discípulos murmuraban, les dijo: “¿Esto los escandaliza? ¿Qué pasará entonces, cuando vean al Hijo del hombre subir donde estaba antes? El Espíritu es el que da Vida, la carne de nada sirve. Las palabras que les dije son Espíritu y Vida. Pero hay entre ustedes algunos que no creen.” En efecto, Jesús sabía desde el primer momento quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era él que lo iba a entregar. Y agregó: “Por eso les he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre no se lo concede.” Desde ese momento, muchos de sus discípulos se alejaron de él y dejaron de acompañarlo. Jesús preguntó entonces a los Doce: “¿También ustedes quieren irse?” Simón Pedro le respondió: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de Vida eterna. Nosotros hemos creído y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios.”

Tinipon ni Josue sa Shekem ang lahat ng lipi ng Israel. Pinapunta niya roon ang matatandang namumuno, mga tagapangasiwa, ang mga hukom at ang mga opisyal ng Israel, at sila'y humarap sa Diyos. Sinabi niya, “Ito ang ipinapasabi sa inyo ni Yahweh, ang Diyos ng Israel: At kung ayaw ninyong maglingkod kay Yahweh, pumili kayo ngayon kung sino ang inyong paglilingkuran: ang mga diyos na pinaglingkuran ng inyong mga ninuno sa Mesopotamia, o ang mga diyos ng mga Amoreo, na sinasamba dito sa lupaing inyong tinitirhan. Ngunit para sa akin at sa aking sambahayan, kay Yahweh kami maglilingkod.” Sumagot ang bayan, “Hindi namin magagawang talikuran si Yahweh at maglingkod sa ibang diyos! Si Yahweh, na ating Diyos, ang siyang humango sa atin sa pagkaalipin sa Egipto. Pasakop kayo sa isa't isa bilang tanda ng inyong paggalang kay Cristo. Mga babae, pasakop kayo sa sarili ninyong asawa tulad ng pagpapasakop ninyo sa Panginoon. Sapagkat ang lalaki ang ulo ng kanyang asawa, tulad ni Cristo na siyang ulo ng iglesya, na kanyang katawan, at siya ang Tagapagligtas nito. Kung paanong nasasakop ni Cristo ang iglesya, gayundin naman, ang mga babae ay dapat pasakop nang lubusan sa kanilang sariling asawa. Mga lalaki, mahalin ninyo ang inyong asawa na gaya ng pagmamahal ni Cristo sa iglesya. Inihandog niya ang kanyang buhay para sa iglesya upang ialay ito sa Diyos, matapos linisin sa pamamagitan ng paghuhugas sa tubig at sa salita. Ginawa niya ito upang ang iglesya ay maiharap niya sa kanyang sarili na nasa kagandahan nito, walang anumang dungis ni kulubot man, banal at walang anumang kapintasan. Gayundin naman, dapat mahalin ng mga lalaki ang kanilang asawa tulad ng sarili nilang katawan. Ang lalaking nagmamahal sa kanyang asawa ay nagmamahal sa kanyang sarili. Walang taong namumuhi sa sarili niyang katawan. Sa halip, ito'y kanyang pinapakain at inaalagaan, tulad ng ginagawa ni Cristo sa iglesya. Tayo nga'y mga bahagi ng kanyang katawan. Gaya ng sinasabi sa kasulatan, “Dahil dito, iiwan ng lalaki ang kanyang ama't ina at magsasama sila ng kanyang asawa; at silang dalawa ay magiging isa.” Mayroon ditong malalim na hiwaga, at sinasabi ko na ito'y tumutukoy sa kaugnayan ni Cristo sa iglesya.

Tinanong ni Jesus ang Labindalawa, “At kayo, gusto rin ba ninyong umalis?” Sumagot si Simon Pedro, “Panginoon, kanino pa po kami pupunta? Nasa inyo ang mga salitang nagbibigay ng buhay na walang hanggan. Naniniwala kami at natitiyak namin na kayo nga ang Banal na mula sa Diyos.”

Kemudian Yosua mengumpulkan semua suku orang Israel di Sikhem. Dipanggilnya para tua-tua orang Israel, para kepalanya, para hakimnya dan para pengatur pasukannya, lalu mereka berdiri di hadapan Allah. Berkatalah Yosua kepada seluruh bangsa itu: "Beginilah firman TUHAN, Allah Israel: Tetapi jika kamu anggap tidak baik untuk beribadah kepada TUHAN, pilihlah pada hari ini kepada siapa kamu akan beribadah; Allah yang kepadanya nenek moyangmu beribadah di seberang sungai Efrat, atau Allah orang Amori yang negerinya kamu diami ini. Tetapi aku dan seisi rumahku, kami akan beribadah kepada TUHAN!" Lalu bangsa itu menjawab: "Jauhlah dari pada kami meninggalkan TUHAN untuk beribadah kepada Allah lain! Sebab TUHAN, Allah kita, Dialah yang telah menuntun kita dan nenek moyang kita dari tanah Mesir, dari rumah perbudakan, dan yang telah melakukan tanda-tanda mujizat yang besar ini di depan mata kita sendiri, dan yang telah melindungi kita sepanjang jalan yang kita tempuh, dan di antara semua bangsa yang kita lalui, penduduk negeri ini, dari depan kita. Kamipun akan beribadah kepada TUHAN, sebab Dialah Allah kita."

Rendahkanlah dirimu seorang kepada yang lain di dalam takut akan Kristus. Hai isteri, tunduklah kepada suamimu seperti kepada Tuhan, karena suami adalah kepala isteri sama seperti Kristus adalah kepala jemaat. Dialah yang menyelamatkan tubuh. Karena itu sebagaimana jemaat tunduk kepada Kristus, demikian jugalah isteri kepada suami dalam segala sesuatu. Hai suami, kasihilah isterimu sebagaimana Kristus telah mengasihi jemaat dan telah menyerahkan diri-Nya baginya untuk menguduskannya, sesudah Ia menyucikannya dengan memandikannya dengan air dan firman, supaya dengan demikian Ia menempatkan jemaat di hadapan diri-Nya dengan cemerlang tanpa cacat atau kerut atau yang serupa itu, tetapi supaya jemaat kudus dan tidak bercela. Demikian juga suami harus mengasihi isterinya sama seperti tubuhnya sendiri: Siapa yang mengasihi isterinya mengasihi dirinya sendiri. Sebab tidak pernah orang membenci tubuhnya sendiri, tetapi mengasuhnya dan merawatinya, sama seperti Kristus terhadap jemaat, karena kita adalah anggota tubuh-Nya. Sebab itu laki-laki akan meninggalkan ayahnya dan ibunya dan bersatu dengan isterinya, sehingga keduanya itu menjadi satu daging. Rahasia ini besar, tetapi yang aku maksudkan ialah hubungan Kristus dan jemaat.
Bacaan Injil (Yohanes 6: 60–69)

Sesudah mendengar semuanya itu banyak dari murid-murid Yesus yang berkata: "Perkataan ini keras, siapakah yang sanggup mendengarkannya?" Yesus yang di dalam hati-Nya tahu, bahwa murid-murid-Nya bersungut-sungut tentang hal itu, berkata kepada mereka: "Adakah perkataan itu menggoncangkan imanmu? Dan bagaimanakah, jikalau kamu melihat Anak Manusia naik ke tempat di mana Ia sebelumnya berada? Rohlah yang memberi hidup, daging sama sekali tidak berguna. Perkataan-perkataan yang Kukatakan kepadamu adalah roh dan hidup. Tetapi di antaramu ada yang tidak percaya." Sebab Yesus tahu dari semula, siapa yang tidak percaya dan siapa yang akan menyerahkan Dia. Lalu Ia berkata: "Sebab itu telah Kukatakan kepadamu: Tidak ada seorangpun dapat datang kepada-Ku, kalau Bapa tidak mengaruniakannya kepadanya." Mulai dari waktu itu banyak murid-murid-Nya mengundurkan diri dan tidak lagi mengikut Dia. Maka kata Yesus kepada kedua belas murid-Nya: "Apakah kamu tidak mau pergi juga?" Jawab Simon Petrus kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, kepada siapakah kami akan pergi? Perkataan-Mu adalah perkataan hidup yang kekal; dan kami telah percaya dan tahu, bahwa Engkau adalah Yang Kudus dari Allah."

次にヨシュアはイスラエル人全員を、指導者である長老、裁判官、長たちとともに、シェケムに召集しました。全部族が神の前に立った時、ヨシュアは次のように告げました。もし主に従いたくなければ、たった今、だれに従うかを決めなさい。ユーフラテス川の向こうで先祖が拝んでいた神々であろうが、この地に住むエモリ人の神々であろうが、好きに選ぶがいい。しかし、私と私の家族とは、あくまでも主に仕える。」すると、民は言いました。「私たちが主を捨てて、ほかの神々を拝むなどありえないことです。私たちの神、主は、エジプトで奴隷だった先祖を救い出してくださったお方ではありませんか。そして、荒野を旅する間にも、私たちの目の前で数々のくすしいわざを見せてくださったお方です。また、敵地を進む私たちを、いつも守ってくださいました。私たちは主に従う道を選びます。私たちにとって、神様は主おひとりだけですから。」
第二読み物（エペソ人第5章：第21詩–第32詩）
この読み物はエペソ人への手紙です。
互いに従順になって、キリストをたたえなさい。妻は、主に従うように夫に従いなさい。なぜなら、キリストの体である教会がキリストにゆだねられているように、妻は夫にゆだねられているからです。そういうわけですから、妻は、教会がキリストに従うように、どんなことでも喜んで夫に従わなければなりません。また夫は、教会のためにいのちを捨てるほどの愛を示されたキリストにならって、妻を愛しなさい。キリストがそうなさったのは、バプテスマ（洗礼）と神のことばで教会を洗いきよめ、きよく、汚れのないものとするためでした。こうして、一点のしみも、しわも、何の傷もない、きよく完全な栄光の教会として迎え入れようとされたのです。これこそ、夫が妻に対してとるべき態度です。つまり、夫は妻を、自分の体の一部のように愛さなければなりません。二人は一体なのですから、夫が妻を愛する時、自分自身を愛しているのです。自分の体を憎む者はいません。愛し、いたわります。それは、キリストが自分の体である教会をそうされたのと同じです。私たちは、その体の各部分なのです。夫と妻が一体であることは、聖書もはっきり証言しています。「人は結婚する時、父母のもとを離れなければならない。それは、完全に結びついて、二人が一心同体となるためである。」これには深い理解が必要ですが、私たちがキリストの体の各部分であることを説明するには適切な例です。

これには、弟子たちでさえ思わず、「なんとむずかしい話だ。さっぱりわからない」ともらすほどでした。それに気づいたイエスは、彼らに言われました。「こんなことでつまずくのですか。そんなことでは、メシヤ（救い主）のわたしが天に帰るのを見たら、いったいどう思うことでしょう。いいですか。ただ聖霊だけが永遠のいのちを与えてくださいます。肉体的にこの世に生まれただけでは、永遠のいのちはいただけません。今わたしがあなたがたに話したのは、まさにこのことで、どうしたら、ほんとうの霊のいのちをいただけるかということなのです。だが残念なことに、あなたがたの中には、わたしを信じない者がいます。」イエスは初めから、信じない者はだれか、裏切る者はだれかを知っておられたのです。イエスは先をお続けになりました「『父が引き寄せてくださらない限り、だれもわたしのところへは来られません』と言ったのは、そういう意味なのです。」この時から、多くの弟子たちがイエスから離れ、もはや行動を共にしなくなりました。そこでイエスは、十二人の弟子たちに、「まさか、あなたがたは行ってしまわないでしょうね」とお尋ねになりました。シモン・ペテロが即座に答えました。「何をおっしゃるんです、先生。あなたをさしおいて、ほかの人のところへ行くわけがないじゃありませんか。永遠のいのちを与えることばを握っているのは、あなただけなんですから。私たちはそのことばを信じていますし、あなたが神のきよい御子だということも知っています。」

ヨシュアは、イスラエルの全部族をシケムに集め、イスラエルの長老、長、裁判人、役人を呼び寄せた。彼らが神の御前に進み出ると、ヨシュアは民全員に告げた。もし主に仕えたくないというならば、川の向こう側にいたあなたたちの先祖が仕えていた神々でも、あるいは今、あなたたちが住んでいる土地のアモリ人の神々でも、仕えたいと思うものを、今日、自分で選びなさい。ただし、わたしとわたしの家は主に仕えます。」民は答えた。「主を捨てて、ほかの神々に仕えることなど、するはずがありません。私たちの神、主は、私たちと私たちの先祖を、奴隷にされていたエジプトの国から導き上り、私たちの目の前で数々の大きな奇跡を行い、私たちの行く先々で、また私たちが通って来た全ての民の中で、私たちを守ってくださった方です。私たちも主に仕えます。この方こそ、私たちの神です。」
第二読み物（エフェソの信徒第5章：第21詩–第32詩）
この読み物はエフェソの信徒への手紙です。
キリストに対する畏れをもって、互いに仕え合いなさい。妻たちよ、主に仕えるように、自分の夫に仕えなさい。キリストが教会の頭であり、自らその体の救い主であるように、夫は妻の頭だからです。また、教会がキリストに仕えるように、妻もすべての面で夫に仕えるべきです。夫たちよ、キリストが教会を愛し、教会のために御自分をお与えになったように、妻を愛しなさい。キリストがそうなさったのは、言葉を伴う水の洗いによって、教会を清めて聖なるものとし、しみやしわやそのたぐいのものは何一つない、聖なる、汚れのない、栄光に輝く教会を御自分の前に立たせるためでした。そのように夫も、自分の体のように妻を愛さなくてはなりません。妻を愛する人は、自分自身を愛しているのです。わが身を憎んだ者は一人もおらず、かえって、キリストが教会になさったように、わが身を養い、いたわるものです。わたしたちは、キリストの体の一部なのです。「それゆえ、人は父と母を離れてその妻と結ばれ、二人は一体となる。」この神秘は偉大です。わたしは、キリストと教会について述べているのです。
福音書（ヨハネ第6章：第60詩–第69詩）
この読み物はヨハネによる福音書です。
ところで、弟子たちの多くの者はこれを聞いて言った。「実にひどい話だ。だれが、こんな話を聞いていられようか。」イエスは、弟子たちがこのことについてつぶやいているのに気づいて言われた。「あなたがたはこのことにつまずくのか。それでは、人の子がもといた所に上るのを見るならば……。命を与えるのは“霊”である。肉は何の役にも立たない。わたしがあなたがたに話した言葉は霊であり、命である。しかし、あなたがたのうちには信じない者たちもいる。」イエスは最初から、信じない者たちがだれであるか、また、御自分を裏切る者がだれであるかを知っておられたのである。そして、言われた。「こういうわけで、わたしはあなたがたに、『父からお許しがなければ、だれもわたしのもとに来ることはできない』と言ったのだ。」このために、弟子たちの多くが離れ去り、もはやイエスと共に歩まなくなった。そこで、イエスは十二人に、「あなたがたも離れて行きたいか」と言われた。シモン・ペトロが答えた。「主よ、わたしたちはだれのところへ行きましょうか。あなたは永遠の命の言葉を持っておられます。あなたこそ神の聖者であると、わたしたちは信じ、また知っています。」
Prima lettura (Giosuè 24: 1–2A, 15–17, e 18B)

Giosuè radunò tutte le tribù d'Israele in Sichem e convocò gli anziani d'Israele, i capi, i giudici e gli scribi del popolo, che si presentarono davanti a Dio. Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: Se vi dispiace di servire il Signore, scegliete oggi chi volete servire: se gli dei che i vostri padri servirono oltre il fiume oppure gli dei degli Amorrei, nel paese dei quali abitate. Quanto a me e alla mia casa, vogliamo servire il Signore. Allora il popolo rispose e disse: “Lungi da noi l'abbandonare il Signore per servire altri dei! Poiché il Signore nostro Dio ha fatto uscire noi e i padri nostri dal paese d'Egitto, dalla condizione servile, ha compiuto quei grandi miracoli dinanzi agli occhi nostri e ci ha protetti per tutto il viaggio che abbiamo fatto e in mezzo a tutti i popoli fra i quali siamo passati. Perciò anche noi vogliamo servire il Signore, perché Egli è il nostro Dio.”
Seconda lettura (Efesini 5: 21–32)
Una lettura della lettera di San Paolo agli Efesini.
Siate sottomessi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo. Le mogli siano sottomesse ai mariti come al Signore; il marito infatti è capo della moglie, come anche Cristo è capo della Chiesa, lui che è il salvatore del suo corpo. E come la Chiesa sta sottomessa a Cristo, così anche le mogli siano soggette ai loro mariti in tutto. E voi, mariti, amate le vostre mogli, come Cristo ha amato la Chiesa e ha dato se stesso per lei, per renderla santa, purificandola per mezzo del lavacro dell'acqua accompagnato dalla parola, al fine di farsi comparire davanti la sua Chiesa tutta gloriosa, senza macchia né ruga o alcunchè di simile, ma santa e immacolata. Così anche i mariti hanno il dovere di amare le mogli come il proprio corpo, perché chi ama la propria moglie ama se stesso. Nessuno mai infatti ha preso in odio la propria carne; al contrario la nutre e la cura, come fa Cristo con la Chiesa, poiché siamo membra del suo corpo. Per questo l'uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà alla sua donna e i due formeranno una carne sola. Questo mistero è grande; lo dico in riferimento a Cristo e alla Chiesa!
Vangelo (Giovanni 6: 60–69)
Una lettura del Santo Vangelo secondo San Giovanni.
Molti dei suoi discepoli, dopo aver ascoltato, dissero: “Questo linguaggio è duro; chi può intenderlo?” Gesù, conoscendo dentro di sé che i suoi discepoli proprio di questo mormoravano, disse loro: “Questo vi scandalizza? E se vedeste il Figlio dell'uomo salire là dov'era prima? E' lo Spirito che dà la vita, la carne non giova a nulla; le parole che vi ho dette sono spirito e vita. Ma vi sono alcuni tra voi che non credono.” Gesù infatti sapeva fin da principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito. E continuò: “Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me, se non gli è concesso dal Padre mio.” Da allora molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui. Disse allora Gesù ai Dodici: “Forse anche voi volete andarvene?” Gli rispose Simon Pietro: “Signore, da chi andremo? Tu hai parole di vita eterna; noi abbiamo creduto e conosciuto che tu sei il Santo di Dio.”
