First reading (Acts 6: 1–7)
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

Beloved: Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it says in Scripture: Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame. Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall. They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The whole community agreed and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and Holy Spirit; Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenus and Nicolaus of Antioch who was a proselyte. The Word of God continue to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly and even many priests accepted the faith.

This means honor for you who believed, but for unbelievers, also the stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone and it is a stone to stumble over, a rock which lays people low. They stumble over it in rejecting the Word, but the plan of God is fulfilled in this. You are a chosen race, a community of priest-kings, a consecrated nation, a people God has made his own to proclaim his wonders. For he called you from your darkness to his own wonderful light.

For upright is the Lord's word and worthy of trust is his work. The Lord loves justice and righteousness; the earth is full of his kindness.
But the Lord's eyes are upon those who fear him, upon those who trust in his loving-kindness to deliver them from death and preserve them from famine.

En aquellos días, como el número de discípulos aumentaba, los helenistas comenzaron a murmurar contra los hebreos porque se desatendían a sus viudas en la distribución diaria de los alimentos. Entonces los Doce convocaron a todos los discípulos y les dijeron: “No es justo que descuidemos el ministerio de la Palabra de Dios para ocuparnos de servir las mesas. Es preferible, hermanos, que busquen entre ustedes a siete hombres de buena fama, llenos del Espíritu Santo y de sabiduría, y nosotros les encargaremos esta tarea. De esa manera, podremos dedicarnos a la oración y al ministerio de la Palabra.” La asamblea aprobó esta propuesta y eligieron a Esteban, hombre lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo, a Felipe y a Prócoro, a Nicanor y a Timón, a Pármenas y a Nicolás, prosélito de Antioquía. Los presentaron a los Apóstoles, y estos, después de orar, les impusieron las manos. Se han acercado al que es la piedra viva rechazada por los hombres, y que sin embargo es preciosa para Dios que la escogió. También ustedes, como piedras vivas, se han edificado y pasan a ser un Templo espiritual, una comunidad santa de sacerdotes que ofrecen sacrificios espirituales agradables a Dios por medio de Cristo Jesús. Dice la Escritura: Yo voy a colocar en Sión una piedra angular, escogida y preciosa: quien se afirme en ella no quedará defraudado. Ustedes, pues, que creen, recibirán honor. En cambio, para aquellos que no creen, él es la piedra rechazada por los constructores, que se ha convertido en la piedra angular; piedra en la que la gente tropieza y roca que hace caer. Cuando se niegan a creer en la palabra, están tropezando con aquello en lo que debían afirmarse. Pero ustedes son una raza elegida, un reino de sacerdotes, una nación consagrada, un pueblo que Dios hizo suyo para proclamar sus maravillas; pues él los ha llamado de las tinieblas a su luz admirable.

Pada masa itu, ketika jumlah murid makin bertambah, timbullah sungut-sungut di antara orang-orang Yahudi yang berbahasa Yunani terhadap orang-orang Ibrani, karena pembagian kepada janda-janda mereka diabaikan dalam pelayanan sehari-hari. Berhubung dengan itu kedua belas rasul itu memanggil semua murid berkumpul dan berkata: "Kami tidak merasa puas, karena kami melalaikan Firman Allah untuk melayani meja. Karena itu, saudara-saudara, pilihlah tujuh orang dari antaramu, yang terkenal baik, dan yang penuh Roh dan hikmat, supaya kami mengangkat mereka untuk tugas itu, dan supaya kami sendiri dapat memusatkan pikiran dalam doa dan pelayanan Firman." Usul itu diterima baik oleh seluruh jemaat, lalu mereka memilih Stefanus, seorang yang penuh iman dan Roh Kudus, dan Filipus, Prokhorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas dan Nikolaus, seorang penganut agama Yahudi dari Antiokhia. Mereka itu dihadapkan kepada rasul-rasul, lalu rasul-rasul itupun berdoa dan meletakkan tangan di atas mereka. Firman Allah makin tersebar, dan jumlah murid di Yerusalem makin bertambah banyak; juga sejumlah besar imam menyerahkan diri dan percaya.

Tanggapan adalah: Tuhan, biarkan rahmat Anda menempatkan pada kami, karena kami menempatkan kepercayaan kita di dalam kamu.
— Bersorak-sorailah, hai orang-orang benar, dalam TUHAN! Sebab memuji-muji itu layak bagi orang-orang jujur. Bersyukurlah kepada TUHAN dengan kecapi, bermazmurlah bagi-Nya dengan gambus sepuluh tali!

Dan apabila Aku telah pergi ke situ dan telah menyediakan tempat bagimu, Aku akan datang kembali dan membawa kamu ke tempat-Ku, supaya di tempat di mana Aku berada, kamupun berada. Dan ke mana Aku pergi, kamu tahu jalan ke situ." Kata Tomas kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, kami tidak tahu ke mana Engkau pergi; jadi bagaimana kami tahu jalan ke situ?" Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Akulah jalan dan kebenaran dan hidup. Tidak ada seorangpun yang datang kepada Bapa, kalau tidak melalui Aku. Sekiranya kamu mengenal Aku, pasti kamu juga mengenal Bapa-Ku. Sekarang ini kamu mengenal Dia dan kamu telah melihat Dia." Kata Filipus kepada-Nya: "Tuhan, tunjukkanlah Bapa itu kepada kami, itu sudah cukup bagi kami." Kata Yesus kepadanya: "Telah sekian lama Aku bersama-sama kamu, Filipus, namun engkau tidak mengenal Aku? Barangsiapa telah melihat Aku, ia telah melihat Bapa; bagaimana engkau berkata: Tunjukkanlah Bapa itu kepada kami. Tidak percayakah engkau, bahwa Aku di dalam Bapa dan Bapa di dalam Aku? Apa yang Aku katakan kepadamu, tidak Aku katakan dari diri-Ku sendiri, tetapi Bapa, yang diam di dalam Aku, Dialah yang melakukan pekerjaan-Nya. Percayalah kepada-Ku, bahwa Aku di dalam Bapa dan Bapa di dalam Aku; atau setidak-tidaknya, percayalah karena pekerjaan-pekerjaan itu sendiri. Aku berkata kepadamu: Sesungguhnya barangsiapa percaya kepada-Ku, ia akan melakukan juga pekerjaan-pekerjaan yang Aku lakukan, bahkan pekerjaan-pekerjaan yang lebih besar dari pada itu. 信者の数がどんどん増えるにつれて、内部から不満の声が出るようになりました。信者の中のギリシヤ語を話すユダヤ人たちが、ヘブル語を話すユダヤ人たちに苦情をぶつけたのです。原因は、彼らのうちの未亡人たちが、毎日の食料の配給で差別されていることでした。そこで十二人の使徒は、信者全員を召集し、こう提案しました。「私たち使徒が食料の配給の問題に時間をさくのは、よくありません。何よりも、神のことばを伝えることに専念すべきです。そこで、愛する皆さん。この仕事にふさわしい人、賢明で、聖霊に満たされた人に、いっさいを任せることにしましょう。さあ回りをよく見回して、この人と思う人を七人選んでください。そうすれば私たちは、祈りと説教と教育に打ち込むことができます。」全員がこの提案に賛成し、次の人たちを選びました。ステパノ〔聖霊に満たされた信仰深い人物〕、ピリポ、プロコロ、ニカノル、テモン、パルメナ、アンテオケのニコラオ〔ユダヤ教に改宗していた外国人で、クリスチャンになった人物〕。以上の七名が前に立ったので、使徒たちは彼らのために祈り、彼らに手を置いて祝福しました。こうして、神のことばはますます広まり、エルサレムでは、弟子の数が驚くほど増えていきました。ユダヤ教の祭司たちの中からも、信仰に入る者が数多く出ました。
第二読み物（ペテロの手紙一第2章：第4詩–第9詩）
この読み物はペテロの手紙一です。
主キリストに近づきなさい。主が土台石となり、神はその上に、神の家をお建てになるのです。人々は主を拒みましたが、神は主を最も重要な存在として選ばれたのです。あなたがたも、神の家を建て上げるための生ける土台石となりなさい。そして、聖なる祭司として、イエス・キリストを通して、神に喜ばれる供え物を神にささげなさい。聖書にこう書いてあります。「見よ。わたしは一つの石（キリスト）を（教会の）尊い土台石とするために選び、遣わした。彼に信頼する者は、決して失望しない。」キリストは、信じる者にとって何よりも尊い方ですが、キリストを拒む者にとっては、「つまずきの石、妨げの岩」となりました。「家を建てる者たちの捨てた石が、なくてはならない土台石となったとあるとおりです。彼らのつまずきの原因は、神のことばに耳を傾けず、従おうとしないことですが、そうなるように定められてもいたのです。しかし、あなたがたはそうではありません。あなたがたは神から選ばれた王なる祭司であり、きよい民として神のものとされた人たちです。それはすべて、どうして自分が暗闇から神の驚くべき光へと招き入れられたかを、人々に語り伝えるためなのです。
福音書（ヨハネ第14章：第1詩–第12詩）
この読み物はヨハネの福音書です。
「あなたがたは、どんなことがあっても、心配したりあわてたりしてはいけません。神を信じ、またわたしを信じなさい。父の住んでおられる所には、家がたくさんあります。もしなかったら、はっきり言っておいたでしょう。わたしは、あなたがたを迎える家を準備しに行くのです。すっかり準備ができたら迎えに来ます。わたしがいる所に、あなたがたもいられるようにするためです。これだけ言えば、わたしがどこへ行くか、どうしたらそこへ行けるか、もうわかったでしょう。」するとトマスが言いました。「いいえ、ちっともわかりません。先生がどこへおいでになるのか、まるで見当もつきません。ましてそこへ行く道など、どうしてわかりましょう。」イエスはトマスに言われました。「いいですか。わたしが道です。そして真理でもあり、いのちでもあります。わたしを通らなければ、だれ一人、父のところへは行けません。わたしがどういう者か知っているなら、わたしの父のこともわかったはずです。あなたがたは、今からはもう父を知っているし、すでに父を見ているのです。」今度はピリポが口をはさみました。「先生。あなたのお父様を見せてください。それだけで十分ですから。」「ピリポ。こんなに長くいっしょにいるのに、わたしがどういう者かまだわからないのですか。わたしを見た者は、父を見たのです。それなのにどうして父を見せてくださいなどと言うのですか。わたしが父のうちにおり、父がわたしのうちにおられることを信じないのですか。わたしは自分の考えを話しているのではありません。わたしのうちに住んでおられる父の命じられるままに話しているのです。父は、わたしを通して働きをなさいます。わたしが父のうちにおり、父がわたしのうちにおられる、ただこのことを信じなさい。もし信じられないなら、わたしが行った力ある奇跡を思い出してごらんなさい。そうしたら信じられるでしょう。よく言っておきます。わたしを信じる者は、わたしと同じわざを行うばかりか、それよりもさらに大きなわざを行うのです。わたしが父のもとに行くからです。」
