The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Date: August 14, 2011

First Reading (Revelation 11:19a; 12: 1-6a, and 10ab)
A reading from the book of Revelation.
Then the sanctuary of God in the heavens was opened, and the Ark of the Covenant of God could be seen inside the sanctuary. A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain, looking to her time of delivery. Then another sign appeared: a huge, red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and wearing seven crowns on its heads. It had just swept along a third of the stars of heaven with its tail, throwing them down to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour the child as soon as it was born. She gave birth to a male child, the one who is to rule all the nations with an iron scepter; then her child was seized and taken up to God and to his throne while the woman fled to the desert where God had prepared a place for her. Then I heard a loud voice from heaven: Now has salvation come, with the power and the kingdom of our God, and the rule of his anointed.

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 15: 20-27a)
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead and he comes before all those who have fallen asleep. A human being brought death; a human being also brings resurrection of the dead. All die for being Adam's, and in Christ all will receive life. However, each one in his own time: first Christ, then Christ's people, when he visits them. Then the end will come, when Christ delivers the kingdom to God the Father, after having destroyed every rule, authority and power. For he must reign and put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed will be death. As Scripture says: God has subjected everything under his feet.

Gospel (Luke 1: 39-56)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.
Mary then sets out for a town in the Hills of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with holy spirit, and giving a loud cry, she cried out, "You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!" And Mary stated: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name. From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promise our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever." Mary remained with Elizabeth for approximately three months and then returned home.

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 45) (Verse 10b, 11-12, 16)
The response is: The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.

At your right hand, in gold of Ophir, stands the queen.

Listen, O daughter, pay attention; forget your father's house and your nation.

Your beauty will charm the King, for he is your lord.

Amid cheers and general rejoicing, they enter the palace of the king.

  2. First comment! I would like to congratulate Sean on his first two days of school. You have finally met all of your teachers and companions. In addition, congratulations to Wit who have befriended more students from the outside world. Well done! Maintain a good performance in your work, and may the Lord bless you forever more!

  3. Congratulations to Sean for making the first two days of school. That was only the beginning, and the saga is about to begin. To accomplish this, you must be successful and be aware of what you have done to accomplish your works. Do not be absent on any classes or be tardy to class, because I have heard that you were tardy to your Chemistry A class. Be careful not to let it occur again. Good luck in your saga of the tenth grade!

  4. Congratulations to Sean in the tenth grade, and in the first two days of high school. The grading system has changed and the report appearance has changed as well. Now, instead of one overall grade, the grading system is displayed on the concepts you have learned before. To consistently go for that no C grade, you must be proficient and consistent in your works. Perseverance is essential and must partake in this saga as well. Good luck Sean! Be always successful and go for those A*s!

  5. I remember last year on this day where we had to recite the Hail Mary to earn points. Ah, that was the past. Now the present. Congratulations to Sean on his first two days of school! Challenges are present to this day, and for the time-being, you may rest for a while, but there are times where you have to step up your game. Good luck Sean, and go for those high grades, because these grades will definitely appear on your transcript.

  6. Ah, it has been a while that I have never commented on this blog. However, I still would like to congratulate Sean on his first two days of school. Apparently, the things that I want to say has already been stated (and I really do not want to state such anaphoras), therefore I will conclude my message by simply stating, "May the Lord bless you in the challenges to come!"

  7. What a great way to conclude the first two days of school. Congratulations to Sean who has made it with only a few flaws. Pretty much everyone else has already stated the facts and advice, so I will conclude this message by simply stating, "Good luck Sean, and may the Lord bless you and keep you!"

  11. This is the Opening Prayer for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Let us pray. All-powerful and ever-living God, you raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother of you Son, body and soul to the glory of heaven. May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share her glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, you Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

  13. Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Today the virgin Mother of God was taken up to heaven to be the beginning and pattern of the Church in its perfection, and a sign of hope and comfort for your people in their pilgrim way. You would not allow decay to touch her body, for she had given birth to your Son, the Lord of all life, in the glory of the incarnation. In our joy we sing to your glory with all the choirs of angels. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)
