32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: November 6, 2011

First Reading (Wisdom 6: 12-16)
A reading from the book of Wisdom.
Wisdom is luminous and never tarnished; she willingly lets herself be seen by those who love her, and known by those who look for her. She hastens to meet those who long for her. Seek her in the morning and you will not be disappointed; you will find her sitting at your door. To meditate on Wisdom is understanding fully grown; whoever is on the watch for her will be free of anxiety. She goes in search of those who are worthy of her, graciously meets them on the way and is present in their every thought.

Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians.
Brothers and sisters, we want you not to be mistaken about those who are already asleep, lest you grieve as do those who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose; it will be the same for those who have died in Jesus. God will bring them together with Jesus and for his sake. By the same word of the Lord we assert this: those of us who are to be alive at the Lord's coming will not go ahead of those who are already asleep. When the command by the archangel's voice is given, the Lord himself will come down from heaven, while the divine trumpet call is sounding. Then those who have died in the Lord will rise first; as for us who are still alive, we will be brought along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord is the celestial world. And we will be with the Lord forever. So, then comfort one another with these words.

Gospel (Matthew 25: 1-13)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Jesus stated this to his disciples: "This story throws light on what will happen in the kingdom of heaven. Ten bridesmaids went out with their lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were careless while the others were sensible. The careless bridesmaids took their lamps as they were and did not bring extra oil. But those who were sensible, brought with their lamps flasks of oil. As the bridegroom delayed, they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight, a cry rang out: 'The bridegroom is here, come out and meet him!' All the maidens woke up at once and trimmed their lamps. Then the careless ones stated to the sensible ones: 'Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out.' The sensible ones answered: 'There may not be enough for both you and us. You had better go to those who sell and buy for yourselves.' They were out buying oil when the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the wedding feast, and the doors were shut. Later the rest of the bridesmaids arrived and called out: 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he answered: 'Truly, I do not know you.' So, stay awake, for you do not know the day nor the hour."

  1. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 63) (Verses 2-8)
The response is: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

O God, you are my God, it is you I seek; for you my body longs and my soul thirsts, as a dry and weary land without water.

Thus I have gazed upon you in the sanctuary, to see your power and your glory. Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

I will bless you as long as I live, lift up my hands and call on your name. As with the richest food my soul will feast; my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.

When I remember you on my bed I think of you all through the night, for you have been my help; I sing in the shadow of your wings.

  4. This is the Opening Prayer for the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Let us pray. Almighty Father, strong is your justice and great is your mercy. Protect us in the burdens and challenges of life. Shield our minds from the distortion of pride and enfold our desire with the beauty of truth. Help us to become more aware of your loving design so that we may more willingly give our lives in service to all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  6. Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. In you we live, move, and have your being. Each day you show us a Father's love; your Holy Spirit, dwelling within us, gives us on earth the hope of unending joy. Your gift of the Spirit, who raised Jesus from the dead, is the foretaste and promise of the paschal feast of heaven. With thankful praise, in company with the angels, we glorify the wonders of your power. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)

  7. Lord, we thank you for the nourishment you give us through your holy gift. Pour out your Spirit upon us and in the strength of this food from heaven, keep us single-minded in your service. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

  8. In the presence of the lord we have reflected on his words about the wisdom of awareness. What are we? Are we careless and foolish, or are we sensible and wise? Probably a combination of the two. We are foolish and careless when we sin. We are sensible and wise when we are aware and attempt to live a bit like Jesus and to put his words into practice. Therefore, may Almighty God keep you vigilant, sensible, and wise, blessing you: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The mass has ended, you are sent. So let us go in peace, of the Lord, and may he keep you always faithful, sensible, and aware. Thanks be to God.
