2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Date: January 15, 2012

First Reading (1 Samuel 3: 3-10 and 19)
A reading from the first book of Samuel.
The lamp of God was still lighted and Samuel also lay in the house of the Lord near the ark of God. Then the Lord called, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel answered, "I am here!" and ran to Eli stating, "I am here, did you not call me?" But Eli stated, "I did not call, go back to sleep." So he went and lay down. Then the Lord called again, "Samuel!" and Samuel stood up and went to Eli stating, "You called me; I am here." But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep." Samuel did not yet know that the Lord and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. But the Lord called Samuel for the third time and, as he went again to Eli stating, "I am here for you have called me," Eli realized that it was the Lord calling the boy. So he stated to Samuel, "Go, lie down, and if he calls you again, answer: "Speak, Lord, your servant listens." Then the Lord came and stood there calling as he did before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, Lord, for your servant listens." Samuel grew; the Lord was with him and made all his words become true.

Second Reading (1 Corinthians 6: 13-15 and 17-20)
A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: Food is for the stomach, as the stomach is for food, and God will destroy them both. Yet the body is not for sex, but for the Lord; and the Lord is for the body. And God who raised the Lord, will also raise us with his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? And you would make that part of his body become part of a prostitute? Never! On the contrary, anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Avoid unlawful sex entirely. Any other sin a person commits is outside the body but those who commit sexual immorality sin against their own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, given by God? You belong no longer to yourselves. Remember at what price you have been bought and make your body serve the glory of God.

Gospel (John 1: 35-42)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
On the following day John was standing there with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and stated, "There is the Lamb of God." On hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. He turned and saw them following, and he stated to them, "What are you looking for?" They answered, "Rabbi (which means Master), where are you staying?" Jesus stated, "Come and see." So they went and saw where he stayed and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard what John had stated and followed Jesus. Early the next morning he found his brother Simon had stated to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means the Christ), and he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and stated, "You are Simon, son of John, but you shall be called Cephas" (which means Rock).

Let us pray. Almighty ever-living God, who govern all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times; through our Lord Jesus Christ, you Son, who lives reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. 15. Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 40) (Verses 2, 4a, and 7-10)
The response is: Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

With resolve I waited for the Lord; he listened and heard me beg. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

Sacrifice and oblation you did not desire; this you had me understand. Burnt offering and sin offering you do not require. Then I stated, "Here I come!"

"As the scroll says of me; to do your will is my delight, O God, for your law is within my heart."

In the great assembly I have proclaimed your saving help. My lips, O Lord, I did not seal — you know that very well.

Speaker: For those specially called to be his servants in the priesthood or the religious life and who have followed him may also persevere, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, listen to your servants.

  18. Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  19. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours, he humbled himself and was born of the Virgin; by the passion of the Cross he freed us from unending death, and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim. (After this, you sing the Sanctus.)

  20. Pour on us, O Lord, the Spirit of your love, and in your kindness make those you have nourished by this one heavenly Bread one in mind and heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  21. May almighty God bless you in his kindness and pour out saving wisdom upon you. Amen.
May he nourish you always with the teaching of the faith and make you persevere in holy deeds. Amen.
May he turn your steps towards himself and show you the path of charity and peace. Amen.
And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you forever. Amen.
The Mass has ended, and you are sent. Therefore, go in peace of Christ and let him be your companion in life. Thanks be to God.

  22. Primera Lectura (1 Samuel 3: 3–10 y 19)
Elí le respondió: “Yo no te he llamado, vuelve a acostarte.” Y Samuel se fue a acostar. Yahvé lo llamó de nuevo: “¡Samuel! ¡Samuel!” Elí le respondió: “Yo no te he llamado, hijo mío, vuelve a acostarte.” Y Samuel volvió a acostarse.

  23. Bacaan Pertama (1 Samuel 3: 3–10 dan 19)
Pembacaan dari kitab pertama dari Samuel.
Lampu rumah Allah belum lagi padam. Lalu pergilah ia tidur. Dan TUHAN memanggil Samuel sekali lagi. Samuelpun bangunlah, lalu pergi mendapatkan Eli serta berkata: "Ya, bapa, bukankah bapa memanggil aku?" Tetapi Eli berkata: "Aku tidak memanggil, anakku; tidurlah kembali." Samuel belum mengenal TUHAN; firman TUHAN belum pernah dinyatakan kepadanya.
